Compiling Kernel for 24 CPU threads

I've been looking around but can't find an answer to this yet.  How can I compile a x86_64 kernel for 24 CPUs?  By default in the x86_64 config is set to CONFIG_NR_CPUS=16.
Thanks in advance!

Use ABS to do it (see the wiki) or use a pre-made kernel from the AUR.  See kernel26-ck from my sig for example.  Just enable the menuconfig option and you can customize the entire thing if you wish.

  • [SOLVED] Problem compiling kernel for an Arch install on USB pendrive

    I've installed Arch linux to a USB pendrive and I'm building a kernel for my specific hardware (Acer Aspire One) so as there is no kernel26.img file needed.
    I've used gothicknight's custom kernel but it doesn't work for me as it doesn't recognise my USB stick (/dev/sdb).  Instead, it just recognises the SSD (/dev/sda).  I believe the standard Arch kernel uses a "hook" called "usb" in order to work from a USB stick - at least that's how I've got the current (default) Archlinux kernel working.
    I'm not that skilled at linux and am still quite new to kernel compilation (I've done it once or twice before and, yes, I've read the ArchWiki articles - both of them).  Can anyone tell me what I should do to get things working on a USB stick install?
    Kind regards

    Solved it.  I didn't need to recompile.  I just needed to add 'rootdelay=5' as a kernel boot parameter.

  • Kernel patch for more CPU families offers measurable speed increases

    I wanted to show folks a pretty nice patch that allows one more options when compiling a kernel for CPU families.  Complete list included at the bottom of this post.  I tested it using three different x86_64 machines running a generic x86-64 kernel and an otherwise identical kernel running with the optimized gcc options.
    Conclusion: There are small but real speed increases using a make endpoint to building with this patch.
    Details:
    1) Three test machines: Intel Xeon X3360, Intel i7-2620M, Intel Core i7-3660K.
    2) All ran the make benchmark (linked below) 35 times while booted into a 'generic' kernel. Then all ran the same make benchmark 35 times after booting into an optimized kernel. Below are the optimizations chosen for each machine.
    2a) X3360 = core2
    2b) i7-2620M = corei7-avx
    2c) i7-3660K = core-avx-i
    3) Analyzed resulting distributions for statistical significance via ANOVA plots that clearly show statistically significant albeit small differences.
    Discussion
    1) All the assumptions for ANOVA are met:
    *Data are normally distributed as show in the normal quantile plots.
    *The population variances are fairly equal (Levene and Barlett tests).
    2) The ANOVA plots clearly show significance.
    *Pair-wise analysis by Tukey-Kramer shows significance at the 0.05 level for all CPUs compared.
    Below are the differences in median values:
    core2       +87.5 ms
    corei7-avx  +79.7 ms
    core-avx-i  +257.2 ms

    I agree, your CPU, in practice, is really either idle or loaded.
    In my case (AMD 965, 4 freq steps) the processor is at lowest freq for about 90 - 95% of a time, and at highest for 5 - 10%. The 2 intermediate are used for about 0.1% of a time.
    My guess would be that intermediate ones are only used for smooth transition from lowest to highest. So they really are hardware dependent...

  • How could i get the kernel and user cpu usage for each process

    Hi all,
    In order to monitor the system CPU usage, I would like write a script to gather the kernel and user CPU usage for each process, like the prstat or top does. As always missing the shortlived kernel usage, prstat or top cann't get the precise CPU usage. I checked with the dtrace syscall, proc and fbt provider, but don't get which one is useful.
    Please provide your comments and suggestion.
    Thanks in adv

    As I've studied the "dtrace" for a while, and seems Sun gives a pretty high score on this new feature.....I do want to know whether there's some probe can work for it, like writing a "dtrace" version prstat.You can write a prstat without dtrace. Because that's just polling at specific intervals and reading some process structures from /proc. You could have dtrace fire a probe every 5 seconds and read the same thing, but it wouldn't really be using any features of dtrace. Trhying to write it "in dtrace" doesn't make much sense.
    What you could do that would be harder via other methods is to fire a probe at process exit that displayed the process information including total CPU time. They could print exactly when processes exited. Doing that without dtrace would be very difficult.

    if it's the arch way (TM), here's an example of a custom kernel with -mm patch.
    what I have in /boot:
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4.3M 2008-12-23 09:52 kernel26mm-fallback.img
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 668K 2008-12-23 09:52 kernel26mm.img

    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1.7M 2008-12-22 18:44 vmlinuz26mm
    now here's the /boot/grub/menu.lst related entry (you may add the fallback one):
    # (2) Arch Linux
    title  kernel26mm
    root   (hd0,0)
    kernel /vmlinuz26mm root=/dev/sda5 ro vga=773
    initrd /kernel26mm.img
    Should be traditional way.

  • Is it possible to compile NVIDIA for multiple kernels simultaneously?

    Hi all,
    First, the reference is http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVI … tom_kernel, as well as a small discussion I started at http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=20410.
    Basically, currently the nvidia-beta (and I'm sure the rest of the nvidia scripts) use `uname -r` to obtain the current kernel name, which is then used for the rest of the PKGBUILD. Its relatively trivial to alter that to the name of whichever kernel, meaning there's no problem compiling nvidia.ko for kernel26-ice from within kernel26 itself, and to alter the name of the package so that your nvidia-beta package does not need to be over-written (you then have two nvidia.ko, each for their own kernel.
    My question is, is it possible for a single PKGBUILD to compile nvidia.ko for all kernels currently installed (probably through looking at either /lib/modules or /usr/src)? This would mean only one maintainer is needed for nvidia-beta or nvidia-17xx or whichever series, and the same PKGBUILD could be used on any system, even those with multiple kernels.
    I'm not very familiar with the limitations of PKGBUILDs, or the rules governing what they may or may not do (for example, accessing and checking the machine itself outside the fakeroot?), so this may be nonsense, if so feel free to point it out. Another idea would be for a simple bash script to create as many PKGBUILDs as required, based on the most recent nvidia-beta PKGBUILD, simply sed-replacing uname -r with the appropriate kernel names and modifying the PKG name.

    Hi,
    it's not difficult to do but I DO NOT recommend to do it (see my notes below the code).
    PKGBUILD
    pkgname=nvidia-beta
    pkgver=185.18.04
    pkgrel=1
    pkgdesc="NVIDIA beta drivers for kernel26."
    arch=('i686' 'x86_64')
    [ "$CARCH" = "i686" ] && ARCH=x86 && NV=0
    [ "$CARCH" = "x86_64" ] && ARCH=x86_64 && NV=0

    depends=(kernel26 nvidia-utils-beta)

    [ "$CARCH" = "x86_64" ] && md5sums=('33967a6d452c562bb8af02b0734ebf22')
    build()
    # Read list of installed kernels
    KERNELS=`ls -1 /lib/modules`
    # Extract the nvidia drivers
    cd $startdir/src/
    sh NVIDIA-Linux-${ARCH}-${pkgver}-pkg${NV}.run --extract-only
    cd NVIDIA-Linux-${ARCH}-${pkgver}-pkg${NV}
    cd usr/src/nv
    ln -s Makefile.kbuild Makefile
    # Now build modules for each kernel
    for KERNEL in $KERNELS; do
    echo "Building for ${KERNEL}"
    # Compile the module
    make SYSSRC=/lib/modules/${KERNEL}/build module || return 1
    # Install kernel module
    mkdir -p $startdir/pkg/lib/modules/${KERNEL}/kernel/drivers/video/
    install -m644 nvidia.ko $startdir/pkg/lib/modules/${KERNEL}/kernel/drivers/video/ || return 1
    # Clean
    make clean || return 1
    done;
    nvidia.install
    # arg 1: the new package version
    post_install() {
    KERNELS=`ls -1 /lib/modules`
    for KERNEL in $KERNELS; do
    depmod -v $KERNEL > /dev/null 2>&1
    done;
    # arg 1: the new package version
    # arg 2: the old package version
    post_upgrade() {
    post_install $1
    rmmod nvidia || echo 'In order to use the new nvidia module, exit Xserver and unload it manually.'
    # arg 1: the old package version
    post_remove() {
    KERNELS=`ls -1 /lib/modules`
    for KERNEL in $KERNELS; do
    depmod -v $KERNEL > /dev/null 2>&1
    done;
    op=$1
    shift
    $op $*
    PS: I haven't test it because I don't use multiple kernels
    But be aware of possible problems. Some modifications may influence kernel functionalities, so once you compile a driver for kernel26-xyz on kernel26-zyx the module may not work on kernel26-xyz or may cause unexpected issues.
    You also should not (you possibly even won't be able to) build module for different release version (eg. build for 2.6.28 on 2.6.29) due changes in kernel headers.
    I'm also not sure if it is safe to generate module dependencies for another kernel then you are currently running.
    As you can see above, it is not problem to make such a PKGBUILD, but it also brings too many problems and it's too dangerous that it is better to stay at current model "module package for each kernel". So if you want to you may try to use this PKGBUILD, but I strictly warn everyone else that it may cause more harm then use so don't blame me if something goes wrong. You were warned .

  • Trouble with custom kernel for EeePC 1000H and bluetooth

    I believe I've got pretty much everything working on my 1000H except for bluetooth. I can't seem to get the hardware working. The module is loaded, and dmesg has references to bluetooth, but blueman does not list the adapter, and running "hcitool scan" from the command line returns "Device is not available: No such device".
    I've enabled every bluetooth-related item I can find in the kernel, so I don't see what I'm missing. I did import the config from the stock kernel, where bluetooth was working fine.

    Got it. I tried booting with MOD_AUTOLOAD set to yes, and it was working fine. Looks like I needed to specify some more modules in my list.

  • Question about ASE 15.7 kernel mode – process vs threaded

    Hi there,
    This question is related to upgrading Sybase ASE Server
    from version 15.5 to version 15.7 on Sun Solaris SPARC Operating System
    (Solaris 10). For the upgrade, I need to choose between threaded kernel and
    process kernel mode.
    1> Is the process kernel mode in ASE 15.7 identical to
    process kernel in ASE 15.5? Are there any changes to process kernel mode
    between version 15.5 and 15.7? With all the other configurations on the Solaris
    host being same (Number of CPUs, RAM, Storage, Sybase ASE Configuration
    parameter values like total memory, engines), will the performance on ASE 15.7
    in process kernel mode be same as on ASE 15.5?
    If there are differences in performance, what are they? What should I be monitoring on ASE 15.7 to see
    if there is performance issue on the ASE Server?
    2> For the threaded kernel mode, are there any performance
    overheads like more CPU usage? We are not planning to change the hardware
    configuration of the Solaris host during the upgrade.  What values should I be monitoring at the OS
    level OR Sybase ASE level to make sure that there are no performance issues? Is
    there any particular parameter that needs to be monitored closely when we
    change to threaded kernel mode?
    Are there any Sybase Configuration parameters that I need
    to tune for the New threaded kernel mode? If so, do you have any performance
    tuning tips (white papers, technical documents) for threaded kernel mode?
    3> What is SAP Sybase recommendation on which Kernel mode I
    should be using? I researched the SAP Knowledge Base articles for
    recommendations on which Kernel mode to use and I could not find a definitive answer.
    Thanks,
    Raj

    Actually with Solaris on SPARC, there is a very key consideration - you should be on ASE 15.7 sp50 or sp100 or higher AND have applied the kernel jumbo patch (Oracle BugID 16054425) from Solaris that fixes the issue in which they prohibited OS threads from issuing KAIO calls.   Then in ASE, you need to configure the 'solaris async i/o mode' parameter.
    The changes between threaded and process mode kernels should be transparent to your application.  Generally speaking, SAP recommends 'threaded' kernel mode - and specifically for SAP applications only certifies 'threaded' kernel mode.    For custom applications, you *could* use either - although, depending on how many engines you run and what chipset you are on, you might see better performance with one vs. the other - typically threaded kernel mode is better, although there are exceptions.
    Generally, the main difference is that in process kernel mode, each engine did disk and network IO polling.   Due to OS security restrictions, this often meant that a engine had to process the disk IO in which it submitted...or for networking, your SPID had to run on your network engine for any network IO.  In threaded mode, there is a single parent process with engine tasks (threads) and IO tasks (threads).   Consequently, for customers used to running in the 10's of engines, we suggest a starting point of reducing the number of engines by 2 to give the IO tasks CPU time.
    One reason why threaded mode is often better is due to OS scheduling.   With hardware threaded cores, most OS dispatch schedulers do a better job of spreading the threads across the cores before utilizing the threads when a process is multi-threaded with POSIX threads - then a multi-process/kernel threaded implementation.   At one customer, we proved that we consistently got the best performance with threaded kernel and the only way we could match it with process kernel was to use OS cpu affinity to bind the ASE engine processes to individual cores.
    However, one consideration is that older SPARC Niagara chips (T1-T4) were notoriously bad at network handling for some reason.   As a result, one of the recommendations for ASE on SPARC Niagara chips is to run the same number of network engines as the number of cores ASE is using.   One solution to that is in Solaris 11 (I think) where Solaris finally started being able to handle network interrupts better - I also think the T5/T6 are much better chips - but I have no customer experience data to go on there.

  • [SOLVED]Compiling kernel fails with segfault

    Hi guys,
    I'm out of answers.
    The situation :
    Compiling kernel randomly stops with : "segmentation fault" and never runs through.
    Reissuing make will make it continue until it will fail at some other point.
    Background:
    The system feels completely unstable to say the least, but nothing 100 % reproduceable ( vuze(java) crash, firefox/chromuim flash sites crash every 120 seconds, X crashes once a day , for instance when moving tvtime around, kernel oops daily, sometimes hard lockups, logs of yesterdays oops : http://pastie.org/private/imrqdzdbejdb3jxn4czuw )
    But only the kernel compile is 100 % reproduceable so this must be fixed asap.
    Specs:
    intel e8400,nvidia gtx260, 2 G ddr2,Gigabyte EP45-UD3R, "gigs of space", off. arch kernel 2.6.33-ARCH , x86_64,  "bigtime" cooling :
    cpu temps 50 C° max  during compiling
    What configs/packages are important ? I got paranoid and ditched my old makgepkg.conf and used a newer *.pacnew file , I used to have  :MAKEFLAGS="-j3" but not in this config :
    http://pastie.org/private/4ryshivi2hgyqenjlkicg
    local packages:
    local/gcc 4.5.0-1 (base-devel)
        The GNU Compiler Collection
    local/gcc-libs 4.5.0-1 (base)
        Runtime libraries shipped by GCC for C and C++ languages
    Anything else updated daily.
    The blowup:
    http://pastie.org/private/hoamev0sli7zapbr0xvpbq
    What I tried:
    fsck -f: it fixed two inodes, but still the same behavior
    badblocks -nvs : three hours of badblock testing, 0 hits
    memtest : two passed runs, no errors
    stress from AUR, 15 minutes :
    stress --cpu 8 --io 4 --vm 2 --vm-bytes 128M --timeout 15m
    stress: info: [26841] dispatching hogs: 8 cpu, 4 io, 2 vm, 0 hdd
    stress: info: [26841] successful run completed in 900s
    Max coretemp was 52 C° during stress.
    The usual footnote statement ^_^ :
    On w7 _everything_ runs stable.
    And not only stable , I'm able to OC this box to 4.5 GHz and game under w7 without a prop for hours, well this is what it was build for at some point.
    Conclusion:
    So I'd say hardware wise this box kicks ass and now software wise my Arch kicks me in the a**.
    I doubt there is a faulty hardware part, but what else could it be ?

    Update:
    Trying to compile another big package just to have another result, gcc itself now :
    - segfault after 4 m18 s
    - segfault after 5 m50 s
    Update²:
    I think I found a faulty BIOS setting in my non-OC profile concerning DRAM termination, which said "normal" where "auto" would be correct.
    My OC-profile has this setting correct and since I run this profile in Arch only it might explain that w7 did not fail.
    Still have to verify this but i makes perfect sense, only gcc seems to trigger this. Compiling gcc still running with over 10 minutes in the game now.
    After hitting 4.5 GHz with OC I must have reset the non OC-profile wrong.

  • A PKGBUILD that helps you compile kernel from local source tree

    I don't know if someone did this beofore. Hours ago I wrote a PKGBUILD file for compiling kernel,
    it is different than the one from abs. It allows you
    compile a kernel from a exiting kernel source tree and leave it clean.
    honor the Archway, this means you have a clean filesystem
    It is acutally because I'm currently playing with The Eudyptula Challenge.
    and I'm tied our compress/decompress a kernel tree all the time. If you are kernel developer, you
    may also find it useful.
    The PKGBUILD file worked on my machine, I will add headers and docs later.
    Oh, almost forgot: here is my PKGBUILD:
    #So we will have a clean src tree
    pkgbase=linux-test
    _kernel_bin=kernel_build
    #the variable you have to provide
    _builddir=kernel_build

  • Tomcat 4.1 Bean error (Unable to compile class for JSP)

    Help,
    I am using Tomcat 4.1 with with JDK1.3.1_01. I have a JSP page in which I try to use a Bean, but I get the following error from Tomcat.
    The JSP page is very simple. I am using package names in the import statement. Code below.
    I've put the class files under
    <TOMCAT>\webapps\projectname\WEB-INF\classes under the appropriate packages. What else is missing? I can not figure out what I am doing wrong.

    ***************** END TOMCAT ERROR MESSAGE *********************

    Hi
    I am running my Tomcat apps (on a Windows dev machine) in an alternate location (ie. not default webapps). The same crap comes to me every time. Unable to install etc. I have tried every trick in the book regarding classpath settings etc.
    When I use 'javap' to check the classpath from any location on my machine, its works and javap returns the signature of my class.
    When I use it though Tomcat (with the import set to include the filename), it get the error. I have heard rumors that using JDK 1.3 in stead of 1.4 helps, but I just want it to work with 1.4 :)
    So if any of you can help me on this, please.
    PS. On my linux server it works just fine, as does every other thing on that machine ;)

  • No Compiler found for generated JSP source

    I am trying to deploy a web application JSP with J2EE implementation server on windows XP. I used autodeply but i get the following error on my browser. I already tried to copy tools.jar from D:\j2sdk1.4.2_07\lib to D:\Sun\AppServer\lib and restarted the server but i'm still getting the following error.
    type Exception report
    message
    description The server encountered an internal error () that prevented it from fulfilling this request.
    exception
    org.apache.jasper.JasperException: Unable to compile class for JSP
    No Java compiler was found to compile the generated source for the JSP.
    This can usually be solved by copying manually $JAVA_HOME/lib/tools.jar from the JDK
    to the common/lib directory of the Tomcat server, followed by a Tomcat restart.
    If using an alternate Java compiler, please check its installation and access path.

    I checked my server.log file and it is looks like the following but it is suggesting the same thing reported in my browser window i.e tools.jar
