Kernel patch for more CPU families offers measurable speed increases

I wanted to show folks a pretty nice patch that allows one more options when compiling a kernel for CPU families.  Complete list included at the bottom of this post.  I tested it using three different x86_64 machines running a generic x86-64 kernel and an otherwise identical kernel running with the optimized gcc options.
Conclusion: There are small but real speed increases using a make endpoint to building with this patch.
Details:
1) Three test machines: Intel Xeon X3360, Intel i7-2620M, Intel Core i7-3660K.
2) All ran the make benchmark (linked below) 35 times while booted into a 'generic' kernel. Then all ran the same make benchmark 35 times after booting into an optimized kernel. Below are the optimizations chosen for each machine.
2a) X3360 = core2
2b) i7-2620M = corei7-avx
2c) i7-3660K = core-avx-i
3) Analyzed resulting distributions for statistical significance via ANOVA plots that clearly show statistically significant albeit small differences.
Discussion
1) All the assumptions for ANOVA are met:
*Data are normally distributed as show in the normal quantile plots.
*The population variances are fairly equal (Levene and Barlett tests).
2) The ANOVA plots clearly show significance.
*Pair-wise analysis by Tukey-Kramer shows significance at the 0.05 level for all CPUs compared.
Below are the differences in median values:
core2       +87.5 ms
corei7-avx  +79.7 ms
core-avx-i  +257.2 ms

I agree, your CPU, in practice, is really either idle or loaded.
In my case (AMD 965, 4 freq steps) the processor is at lowest freq for about 90 - 95% of a time, and at highest for 5 - 10%. The 2 intermediate are used for about 0.1% of a time.
My guess would be that intermediate ones are only used for smooth transition from lowest to highest. So they really are hardware dependent...

  • Last kernel patch for Solaris 10 x86 screwed up my kernel

    Hi,
The last kernel patch for Solaris 10 x86 (sorry I cant remember the patch id, but the revision is 30), available from Sun Update Manager screwed up my system.
The system is still booting but in maintenance mode: smf can't start because of repository corrupted. Given instructions to restore the repository does not work because / filesystem is mounted read-only...
As I am not a solaris expert, I will reinstall it from CD. I hope I won't loose the filesystem.

  • ABAP and Kernel Patches for Upgrade and Conversion in 4.6C

    Hi,
We are in a process of upgrade and unicode conversion for the source release 4.6C (Kernel  46D_EXT Patch 2225).
"Combined Upgrade&Unicode Conversion Guide"  for "SAP Basis 4.6C u2192 SAP NetWeaver 7.0 application Server ABAP Unicode Including Enhancement Package 1 Support Package 01 - 06" , In Software Requirements step,  it says
"3. Import 4.6D Kernel patch 2326 from SAP Service Marketplace according to SAP Note 19466"
We wanted to know whether "IT IS ABSOLUTELY NECCESSARY TO GO FOR THE KERNEL PATCH 2326".  We dont have "EBCIDIC code pages" in our MDMP system.
We need to know  becauase we are also doing OS migration from AIX to Sun and this step will add to our production downtime.
Please advice what are the other causes we should go for the kernel 2326.
    Regards

    Hello Mr. Nils Buerckel,
    Thanks for the reply.
We wanted to be very sure whether we should used Kernel 46D Kernel patch 2326 (As it is specifically mentioned in the SAP CU&UC guide and in SAP Note 867193, It is mentioned that  "This patch contains enhancements that are required to execute the "INDX Analysis" scan)
    OR
Can we go for the latest kernel patch avaialable at market place? And Will the latest kernel patch also contains the "enhancements that are required to execute the "INDX Analysis" ?
    Please reply
    Thanks

  • Kernel patch for battery life

Using powertop I found out that the kernel was preventing my laptop from going idle and reading this page found out about a patch for it.
    http://www.lesswatts.org/projects/powertop/known.php
However, that patch is out of date as I just got 2.6.24.3 today. Is there a recent patch for this as it is very annoying to only get three hours where I get five in vista.

Simple - the patching failed. Apparently you have patches that are conflicting here, and one file in concern is $startdir/src/linux-2.6.24*/sound/usb/usx2y/usx2yhwdeppcm.c but I can't tell what other files are involved since you didn't paste the relevant lines before this.

  • Kernel patch for Unix (Solaris)

    Hello!
I have to patch, after successful installation, the SAP Solution Manager.
I know this operation is automatically can be executed with JSPM.
But in order to replace disp-work, R3Trans and TP I have to do this manually.
For this issue I have to stop all relevant processes, e.g. SAPOSCOL, DB-relevant-processes (Oracle)
In Windows area I would just stop all the processes.
<b>How this can be done in Unix area, should  the processes be killed?</b>
    Thank you very much!
    regards
    Thom

    Hi
You can patch java components and kernel using JSPAM. But ABAP part can only be done using SPAM. To start you have to stop SAP ( bot JAVA and ABAP ) ,
stop SAP will take care of this , it should stop database and SAPOSCOL by itself. If saposcol didnt stop , use command
saposcol -k to stop the saposcollector. If it didnt stop you can kill it ( last option ) by
    kill -9 <process id >
stop sap will stop database and its related process. If tns listner is still running , stop it by using
    lsnrctl stop
    Thanks

  • Forced to "upgrade" for more $$$ and now my FIOS speed is crippled.

On Wednesday of this week, I was happily using my FIOS 20/5 service with no problems when I realized my annual agreement for the TV/Internet package was about to expire so I proactively called Verizon to renew for another year of service.
The agent told me that Verizon no longer offers 20/5 and 25/25 is now the least expensive option that I can choose, resulting in approximately $15 extra per month on my bill. I implored the agent to continue my service at 20/5 for the same price but she was firm with the fact that it was no longer available. Needless to say I was frustrated with the result but realized that I was not going to get anywhere so I accepted the new, more expensive package.
I was told the upgrade would happen sometime over night and that the new package would be in place by Thursday morning. On a hunch (and also because previous package upgrades have been bumpy) I went to www.speedtest.net and got a result of 19.58 down and 4.40 up - exactly what I would expect with a little bit of overhead for network operations.
So Thursday morning arrives and I decide to check the speed to verify everything is in place and the first result comes back as 9.95 down and 12.25 up. Hmmm, obviously something changed because the upload speed is now more than double what I had with the previous package but curiously, the download speed is only HALF of what I got with the previous package (the one that's no longer offered). So I call Verizon to begin the quest for an answer.
First level tech support is of no help. He goes through the standard list rebooting of the router (no change) rebooting the ONT (no change) sending new signals to the router and ONT (no change) and finally escalates the ticket to the next level and tells me that I'll get a call back within 8 hours. Frustrated with this outcome, I try a different avenue for support (the original sales agent) and end up back with first line tech support who informs me that the first tech support guys was wrong and I will get a call back within 24 hours!!! Great, just great.
Finally get a call back today from 2nd level support and after punching keys for a few minutes, this guy insists everything is correct on the Verizon systems and there must be something wrong with my equipment. I explain to him that I was having no problem getting 20/5 service and NOTHING has changed on my end so how could my equipment be responsible for the speed loss? His only response it to reiterate that everything is correct on his side and all he can do is send out a tech to my house to run test and prove to me that I'm getting the speeds that have been allocated.
Great, now I've wasted all this time AND I have to waste MORE time on Monday waiting for a tech to arrive (who will almost certainly arrive in the last 30 minutes of the 4-hour window). This is almost the exact same scenario that happened the last time I was upgraded to a faster package. I don't recall exactly how it got resolved but I do remember a tech coming to my house only to find that (shockingly) my router wasn't receiving the speeds is was supposed to be getting and that, indeed, the problem was somewhere in the spaghetti and duct-tape of the Verizon FIOS network.
Multiple tests throughout this period (both at speedtest.net and speedtest.verizon.net) continue to average around 8 down and 11 up on my connection.
Anyway - I'm sure this will drag on and on and I will continue to be a dissatisfied Verizon customer. I just wonder why Verizon can't get it right when it comes to customer service. More over, I wonder why I keep giving them my money.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Jayh. understand your frustration! Why dont you private message me your info so we can take a look into it for you. Thanks Brett

  • Can my old iMac be upgraded for more memory and higher processor speed?

I admit it - I'm not a computer geek.  I don't know much about how they work but am proficient in using them.  I have an older model iMac.  The specs are:
    Hardware Overview:
      Model Name: iMac
      Model Identifier: iMac6,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz
      Number Of Processors: 1
      Total Number Of Cores: 2
      L2 Cache: 4 MB
      Memory: 1 GB
      Bus Speed: 667 MHz
      Boot ROM Version: IM61.0093.B07
      SMC Version (system): 1.10f2
    System Version: Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549)
I get the SBBOD all of the time no matter what.  I've tried all of the suggestions to resolve that issue but they don't work.  Even when only one program is open at a time it does it.  The speed of getting anything accomplished has been dramatically reduced over time.  All of my software is up to date.  All I need to know is, if I take my iMac to an Apple store, can they upgrade the RAM or whatever is needed to make the SBBOD go away and make things work faster?  Sorry for sounding like a dummy here but I'm really not interested in how it works, just that it does work.
Thanks for any help you can give!

I did the etrecheck as suggested and here is what it came up with.  Does anything look suspect?

  • Kernel patch updation for solaris 10 x86

I have Solaris 10 06/06 installed on x86 machine which is using svm and clustered with another node. The kernel revision is 118855-19 from the uname -a output. I am looking for the kernel patch updation and I heard 118855-36 is the latest one. Shall I go ahead with this patch and what r the dependency patches for this.
If anyone done this please guide me..

Patch 118855-36 is the latest kernel patch for Solaris 10 on x86 and its dependencies are:
    113000-01 117435-02 118344-14 119043-09 119255-14 121264-01 122035-01 123840-01 (or greater)
Whether you should go ahead and install the patch is up to you, if possible try it out on a test box first. For better advice on this matter, I would suggest posting in the Solaris 10 forum as this forum is for the Sun Update Connection, Patch Manager & PatchPro toolsets.

  • Latest kernel patch

What is the latest kernel patch for 720_ext_rel for a SAP system on ERP 6.0 EHP3(SPS2) on a SAP NETWEAVER 7.0

Hi, Isaias is right, 720 is not supported, 721 is the official replacement of 720 kernel.
1716826 - Usage of the downward compatible kernel 721 (EXT)
Where can the 721 kernel be used?
There are two use cases for the 721 (EXT) downward compatible kernel:
For all systems with NetWeaver Releases 7.00, 7.01 (7.0 Enhancement Package 1), 7.10 and 7.11 (7.1 Enhancement Package 1) that still run with a kernel 700, 701, 710 or 711 which was delivered originally. These kernel versions are out of maintenance maintenance since August 31st, 2012. You may install the kernel 721 (EXT) on these systems as an alternative to the 720 (EXT) downward compatible kernel.
For all systems running the kernel 720 (EXT) which are:
Systems originally delivered with the 720 (EXT) kernel such as:
    SAP EhP2 for SAP NetWeaver 7.0 ("7.02"
    SAP EhP3 for SAP NetWeaver 7.0 ("7.03"
    SAP NetWeaver 7.2 ("7.20"
    SAP NetWeaver 7.3 ("7.30"
    SAP EhP1 forNetWeaver 7.3 ("7.31"
Systems where the original kernel 700/701/710/711 was already upgraded to the 720 (EXT) version. In these systems you can upgrade the kernel from 720 (EXT) to 721 (EXT) version.
What are the benefits of the kernel 721 (EXT)?
The SAP kernel 721 (EXT) offers several enhancements as compared to the SAP kernel 720. These enhancements may be used in different application scenarios. Please refer to the note 1728283 for more details. The SAP kernel 720 will be replaced by kernel 721 as the standard kernel for NW 7.00-7.31 based SAP systems by end of Q1 2015. A new innovation kernel will be introduced at that time.

  • SAP ECC 6.0  Kernel Upgrade for 32 bit Win2003 Server

    Dear All,
We are in the process of updating kernel patch (Unicode) in our Solution Manager system which is running on - 32 bit Xeon processor - Win2003 server.
When we download kernel patch from SAP Market place, there lists kernel patch only for IA32-32-bit (Windows Server on IA32 32bit), but not for x86-32 bit.
But in the case of 64 bit, we can find both for xeon and itanium processor ( ie., Windows Server on IA64 64bit,   Windows Server on x64 64bit )
I quite confused to select the correct kernel patch for our 32 bit Xeon processor.

  • NSP ABAP 700 - which kernel patch to use?

    Hi,
I have my NSP ABAP 700 from SDN installed on my home laptop.
I'd like to patch the kernel, however I'm not sure which kernel patch I can use from the Markeplace.
I have Windows XP with MAXDB on an intel architecture.
Is it the one called "Windows Server on IA32 32bit"?
A few years ago it was called somthing like x86 32 bit.
    Is it the same?
Anyone has experience with patching kernel for NSP ABAP?
I did kernel patch for WAS 6.20 ABAP and I had to also patch the Database in the end. Is it the same for 7.00?
    Thanks in advance,
    Peter

Has the kernel patch for the 200 lines script been implemented in the newly released Arch kernel 2.6.37 or will it we need to use this script until 2.6.38?
