COMPLETE noob needs direction [iphone development]

Hello friends,
I'm interested in wanting to develop apps for the iphone. I am 100% new to software development in general. Seriously, totally virgin to this stuff. Aside from playing around with a couple little hacks and customizing some of the UI on my phone (with help, haha), I really have zero experience. I've downloaded the SDK, and it all seems very overwhelming, and I feel like any tutorial I check out seems to be geared towards people who have some working knowledge of programming. can anyone help to point me in the right direction to get started? Thank you all very much in advance.
-Jim

Ok, maybe I was a bit harsh by suggesting you have no chance. If what you want to do is have a fun hobby, then maybe it will work out. I don't think I was stroking my ego though.. Everyday I am shown how inexperienced and I am by better programmers, which is one reason why I think its so hard to break into the field and not something you can do well just because you have the will to.
I agree with some of the more measured responses. Get the books, read them and if you are a good learner (which I assume you are if you're considering jumping into all this head first) you will likely be able to pull it off just fine.
SO, I amend my initial response and will just say that you better have a ton of patience and stick to it, or, you will indeed get no where and waste your time.
Seriously, I'd get a "learn to program book" (any language) and decide if you think its totally boring or if you love it - if its somewhere in between, then find a new hobby and save yourself some time. And while you're at it you may as well get one of the Obj-C oriented books mentioned in the other posts since you plan to do Cocoa.
Good luck!

  • Noob question - just paid for iPhone Developer Program...so what now?

    Hi all
Sorry if this has been asked and answered a thousand times already but I coulnd't see anywhere to search the forum for previous threads.
I had an email earlier saying that I'm now eligable to sign up for the standard version of the iPhone Developer Program. I went ahead and paid my £59 and have a confirmation email saying everyting has been processed etc - looks like a complete transaction as far as I can tell.
I've not received any additional emails with any instructions of what I need to do next regarding getting my apps signed or how I submit them to the AppStore etc?
I've seen a few people mentioning iTunes Connect? but when I google that I get thousands of pages about people not being able to connect their iPods to iTunes
Can anyone point me in the right direction here?
    Thanks
    Wayne

I've logged in, is there something specific I should be looking for?
Interestingly (and this may be irrelevant) but I still see some text a little down the screen in the right-hand colum saying...
    iPhone Developer Program
The fastest path from code to customer. Apply now
    iPhone Devloper Program
    Already applied to the Program?
We are currently processing your enrollment application and will be contacting you soon.
Do you guys still see this? is this static text or dynamic based on specific login?

  • Hi, I upgraded my iphone 4 to iso 5 beta 6, but now it shows "No Service" at top left, and unable to complete your activation. Also tels that this device is not registered as part of the iphone developer programme. How could I fix this problem? Please..?

Hi, I upgraded my iphone 4 (4.3.3) to iso 5 beta 6, but now it shows "No Service" at top left, and unable to complete your activation. Also tells that "this device is not registered as part of the iphone developer programme." How could I fix this problem? Please help me...,

I had a similar occurrence with my just activated iPhone 4.
I had been using the phone for three days when an odd occurrence with voice mail caused me to call tech support. After some discussion they decided to push the activation to my phone (even though I had been using it for three days). When I went to power it back up again I repeatedly got the "no service" notification. I got tech support on a land line and we tried hard reboots and so on. No joy. They told me to take it in to the point of sale and either the SIM card or the phone needed (or both) needed replacing.
I tried one last hard reboot after dinner and the phone came up with service, but I took it in to the point of sale in the morning and they swapped the SIM card out and I went to a Genius Bar appointment to get the phone checked out. It is supposedly OK, but I am still having some problems when syncing it so I will have to visit the Genius Bar again tomorrow about that. At least I have not experienced the "no service" problem in the roughly 24 hours since the SIM card was replaced. (Fingers crossed)

  • How long does it take to be an "official iPhone Developer?"

I decided that I wanted to be a iPhone developer a couple of days after the March announcement. So I filled out the contact information, and of course got the reply that the beta program was full.
Fast forward to July 14th, when I got a email from the iPhone Dev folks that my application was being reviewed. It is now July 26th, and I still haven't got an answer back. Does it really take this long to even become a developer??? Can someone get turned down? If so, why? Do you have to tell Apple what you plan to develop?
I have never had to go through such hoops to become a developer for any other platform. You just pay your money and bang there your are, if you even need that. I'm not an official OS X developer because, I really don't need pre-released software.
Also, since all I want to do is just run my own apps on my own iPhone/touch, do you really have to get the official stamp of approval for Apple to get a 'signature"? Do you have to go through Apple to even distribute your apps, even if you may or may not sell them?
Finally, is there anyway to get a file to your iPhone application to read outside of adding it to your application's resources, or create a socket and read it in?
    Thanks,
    edji

I signed up to be an iPhone developer two days ago and today I have my app running on my iPhone. It takes less than a day to get signed up. BUT, you need to watch out for one thing. When I originally placed my order for the $99 SDK I seemed to have checked some tax related checkbox I shouldn't have. The order completed as expected. But 36 hours later I had no email showing the order and I wasn't accepted yet. So I logged into my account on the Apple online store and looked at my order history. Sure enough, my order had a big red flag (not literally) stating I needed to fax in some tax exemption form. What? So I called the 800 number on the bottom of the screen. Since I'm an individual this shouldn't have been required. The guy on the phone sent me over to the small business dept who took care of the issue and the next day I had all my emails showing I was in the program.
So if you sign up these days and it takes more than a day, check your order status.
    Enjoy,
    Rick

  • Request for iPhone developer forum

There has been a recent influx of new iPhone developers in the developer forums. They often don't identify their problem as being specific to the iPhone. You have to look at what they are talking about and see that it is all iPhone stuff. Apparently the iPhone SDK is significantly different enough that answers to basic questions for MacOS X development are not correct for the iPhone SDK.
If there were an iPhone SDK forum they might be more inclined to put iPhone-specific questions in there.

I completely agree with the previous sentiments for an iPhone developer forum. Why?
I am part of the problem. I have come into the Apple development process "solely" to work on the iPhone. I know nothing about Mac OS X. Because of that I was astounded that the iPhone documentation was not "iPhone" but rather Xcode documentation. Yes I understand that there is a great deal of overlap BUT from my point of view it looks as though Apple was extremely lazy in just dumping all of their code and documentation on the iPhone developer. They need about 5 editors to weed out what is and is not iPhone. Just my two cents.

  • Cs5 iphone development viability

This question is not intended to start any derogatory attack on any particular solution.  I have done plenty of googling to try and find the best solution for this.  However I wanted to start iPhone development and was looking for some good opinions on the best way to go with this.  I know to give the most precise answer the specific type of development is needed, I am just trying to get a more general answer for  a basic business or game development, nothing super high end either side, but any opinions are welcome.
Hopefully obviously I would like to use cs5 on windows to do this, however I really wanted some opinions with people with experience to know if I really need to bite the bullet and go an os-x/xcode approach or other option, if CS5 is a solid approach.  Further, and I can’t seem to find a solid declaration of Adobe’s direction with the CS5 packager.

I was on the same path that you just went through (and are going through now).  There are a number of routes you can follow (as far as I know)
-HTML 5/Javascript/Ajax integration (for example, sencha)
    -.Net style (example, monoTouch)
    -Adobe CS5 (Flash iPhone Packager)
-Airplay and the ilk (coding on windows)
    -and of course, xCode.
I think all the others except Adobe CS5 is quite ahead of the game in terms of featuresets and performance.
Unfortunately of course the decision would be to abandon the actionscript coding language (which I like...a lot).
anyway, my two cents worth as a developer.

  • IPhone Developer Banking/Tax Form issues:  W8BEN, GST506E and SWIFT CODE

    Hey guys,
I am new to this entire iphone development thing and having a hard time with this whole Banking/Tax Information process. I have a few questions I'd like to ask:
    1) I cannot for the life of me see a link anywhere on iTunes Connect to fill out an SS-4 or a W8BEN. Many have done so and even Apple's FAQ includes instructions and locations of these links for the forms. The FAQ also states that the W8BEN form must be done through Apple if being completed the first time and then mailed to update. I have looked all over but could not find it. I have heard rumours on other forums that W8BEN is no longer needed. Can this be confirmed?
Does anyone know if I am still required to fill the W8BEN form out?
    2) Regarding the GST506E form, I have filled out the Legal Name portion with my legal name (including middle name), which I use for most of my legal documents in Canada, however my paid contract has already been electronically signed with my name (without the middle name). Will this provide an issue to the entire process?
    3) Similar to the missing W8BEN form, I did not find a place to enter my SWIFT CODE when filling out the banking information. At the moment the Banking info is frozen in place for "24 hours", waiting for the tax forms to come in. Is this still necessary?
    4) Does Apple have a number I can reach them at with regards to these issues I am having? The only place I can turn to is [email protected], but these guys have not emailed me back in almost a week. I have also tried [email protected] and [email protected], no luck either.
I apologize for the long post, but this entire process is getting too frustrating and I am hoping someone here know the answers.
    Thanks for reading my post!
    Peter

Thanks a lot for your post! I've been worrying they did not receive my info since they did not reply in any way. We'll see once the next payments come. I think they at least should have emailed me confirmation that the message was received. The same way they work with technical requests.
Still. Does anyone know what to do about corespondent banks info?

  • Error when activating my iPhone Developer Program membership

Ive just paid 99 dollars for my iphone developer program, and recieved an email containing the activation code. As you probably know, youre supposed to click on this activation-code and it links you to another site. But instead of activation I recieve this error-message on this site:
"We are unable to activate your iPhone Developer Program membership because we are unable to successfully verify your identity. Please contact us and reference Enrollment ID# XXXXXXXXXX for further assistance."
There was no problem verifying my identity when I paid for it. How come thats an issue now?
Since people seem to have to wait for enormous periods of time to get even the simplest questions answered by Apple regarding the Dev Program, I thought I post this here to see if someone else have come across this, and what to do about it (except for waiting indefinitely).

Mine got activated after a few days with no need for further information from me so if you get that same message you probably don't need to worry.

  • Noob needs help: Macbook RAM/storage upgrade advice

Firstly, let me apologize in advance for my ignorance in this subject area!  I'm a complete noob!
    Here goes:
I have a MacBook 7,1 (MC516LL/A) with all original, factory components, and since I've upgraded to OS X 10.7.5, it's been running incredibly S...L...O...W... which is incredibly annoying to me:P
Out of the 250GB's of HD storage, I have about 91 free.  From my previous experience with mac notebooks, I know that I am going to need to get some more hard drive space, soon (my last iBook turned to complete crap, once I got down to 20 gigs of available memory).
I see that I can upgrade the RAM from two, 1GB sticks to two, 4GB sticks.  From the limited research I've done, I'm under the impression that only the boot-up speed will increase slightly (please correct me if any of this is wrong).
I've also been reading about Solid State Drives, found some reasonably priced ones on crucial.com, and they look/sound AWESOME!  Aaaaaand the reality is that I really have no idea what I truly need.  I'm a single mom and a college student, so I'm looking for an upgrade option in the $200-300 range, *and* I'm not into graphic design, web design, or anything that requires top of the line equipment.
My macbook is practically glued to my hands 24/7, so I just want it to run FASTER, and I need more storage.  I don't know if this info is pertinent or helps, but outside of studying (all done with ebooks and online websites), I like to download a lot of music, watch videos, upload family pictures, browse the interwebz, etc., etc.
What can I do to improve speed and expand storage capacity?
Any help is GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!

Hello! I own a mid-2010 MacBook (a.k.a MacBook 7,1) running OS X 10.8.2 Mountain Lion, which I use for school, and I had the exact same issues with my MacBook, before I upgraded it. I had almost filled up my MacBook's HDD and my computer's RAM was insufficient to perform any of my day-to-day tasks with ease. I upgraded the RAM from two sticks of 1GB (the factory-installed configuration) to one stick of 4GB, and I installed a 1TB HDD in place of the original 250GB HDD (my requirements were slightly different from what yours seem to be). Currently, my MacBook is a lot less laggy than it used to be (even with a HDD that's four times larger in terms of capacity installed), but it still takes a long time to start up and perform certain tasks. Therefore, from my experience, I would recommend that you do the following:
    1. Get two sticks of 2GB (2x2GB) of RAM, not one stick of 4GB (1x4GB). Even though the latter will probably be considerably cheaper than the former, I think it's worth the few extra dollars to get the former because it's much faster than the latter. You shouldn't go for anything more than 4GB of RAM in total, because it'll overload your MacBook. Trust me, that's not something you want to have to deal with!
    2. Get a 500GB or 512GB SSD, not a larger HDD. In hindsight, I don't think I even needed anything close to 1TB. I only purchased my huge HDD because it was on offer, and it was being sold (believe it or not) for less than a 500GB HDD. But if you're looking for speed, an HDD is not the way to go; they're much, much slower than SSDs, even though they're much cheaper.
You should see an exponential increase in the speed of your MacBook. You might want to try the following websites; they offer high-quality, affordable components and I've known people (including myself) who have used their products before.

    2. Crucial (of course) - http://www.crucial.com

    7. Kingston - http://www.kingston.com/us/

    Hi, jsgladden.
Here is an article I would recommend when experiencing issues activating a device.  The step referring to recovery mode usually resolves the issue.

To retrieve your data, you will need to restore from backup after processing these steps.  Here is the article that walks you through restoring from either your iCloud or iTunes backup.

  • IPhone Developer Program

    Hi all,
I would enjoy the iPhone developer program, but I would like to know if it's possible to register not with my real name and surname. I know that it's possible to enjoy it with a company name, but I don't have.
    please, let me know.
    thanks in advance

No, you need to register with your real name, since joining the program constitutes a legal agreement between you and Apple.
    Regards.

    Hi
i need to subscribe to iPhone Developer Program with two different company but with only one Apple id for example:
[email protected] is a developer that works and publich application for company A and company B.
Is it possible to buy with the same Apple id two enrollment?

Yes. Your Apple ID can be linked to more than one iPhone Developer account. If it is, then the website will prompt you to choose which one you want to sign in to when you enter your Apple ID and password.

I'm not sure if it's OK to post this here, but I'm searching for an iPhone Developer to partner with and create a new App whether it be a game or a tool. This is not a paid gig but it's something we can work on together and possible market and share the revenue. I have some great ideas to share.
About me: I'm an experienced Graphic Designer with 10 years of industry work under my belt. I've worked mostly in Web but also on small Flash games, broadcast TV shows and a lot of Web-based applications for very well known international clients like Coke, Bell and major Banks and Airlines. I own a small Web company and run a popular video game site too.
I'm looking for someone who's passionate about the iPhone's technology (and iPod Touch) who wants to work together on a small interactive application together.
If you're interested you can message me and I can show you my past work.
