Composite mode transition

Hi,
When I use a transition (edge wipe in this case) between two clips with a different composite mode, something strange happens. I thought that the transition will mix the composite modes but it looks like it adds the composite modes.
Is there any change of solving this problem or do I have to find a workaround?

Can i edit my posts in this forum?
I looked again at the transition and I found that the transition only uses the composite mode of the first clip.

  • Composite mode (control click or right click) and how and when to use

    Hello,
I would like to learn how and when to utilize the composite mode (control click or right click on your timeline)and all of its functions. Do you have a recommendation as to who might be able to explain what each of the composite mode functions do? Editors keep referring to how great this feature in FCP is.
    Thanks,
    Jordan

Have a read through the manual first. It explains what Composite Mode does and the theoretical underpinnings. Book III- Chapter 18- Page 361 (in FCP 5.1) is a good place to start.
If you have questions, come back.
    Have fun.

looking around the web i cannont find any where that explains composite modes in detail!
any links please to some good web sites that explain a little about each one and how they are used please?
i understand screen, overlay, multiply etc but i would love to have a reference for each one of them!

  • Composite Mode with X?

    Hello,
the FCPX allow the Composite Mode function (like the FCP7 under Modify menu), to apply for example over two clip one on top of the other in the timeline (more or less like layers)?
If not ;-( is there any similar function or the same function with another name?
    Thank you.

I´m not yet a FCPX user so I can only imagine what you´re explaining, but tell me if it´s this:
1.Two clips, one on top of the other, with the cursor line over them too.
    2. One click on the "i" icon, with the clip on the top selected and we´ve access to the Composite Modes list?
    3. Choose from that list and apply a Composite Mode over both clips (the first over the other in the vertical alignment)  like a "subtract" or a "multiply" mode?

  • Linear Compositing Mode

I am learning to love the look of how linear color compositing mode combines my content.  While I'm loving the results, I'm one of those people who likes to know why I get a certain result.
It seems that there is a difference between compositing over a black solid or black video versus compositing over nothing. I find that cross and film dissolves to an empty portion of timline has different results than dissolving to a black layer. There are lots of great results that I get from using the sequence setting "Composite in Linear Color."
Could someone explain how transparency and various compositing methods works in linear color mode that makes it different from the flat look I acheived FCP and when using non linear mode?  Does anyone know of a whitepaper explaining the theory and math to help me understand what I'm seeing in the linear color world?

I've not seen any technical explanations put forth by Adobe on this, other than the following:
"...processing is done in a linear color space (i.e., gamma = 1.0) at 32 bits per channel (bpc), which results in more realistic results, finer gradations in color, and better results for midtones."

  • Affecting Parameters in Composite mode

I'm a new FC user so excuse my ignorance. I'm trying to affect the parameters of a video composite. With Avid I was able to affect each video layer and key frame between foreground and background, but in composite mode I can't seem to affect any of the parameters as you can with other video filters. Is there a type of "blending" filter that would work better?

Not sure what you're trying to accomplish, but try double clicking one of the video layers and making adjustments in the Viewer.
for instance if I was composting two identical video clips and using Composite Mode Add then I might launch my top video layer and adjust the Opacity in the Motion Tab

  • Multiple compositions/ bootstrapping/ transitions

    Hello!
So im trying to create an interactive quiz all on adobe edge. So there are multiple pages/animations and so far I have done one "path"/series of questions on one composition and its beginning to look like a nightmare. I know that after effects has different compositions and in the end you can import them in one bigger picture and have transitions between each comp.
I wanted to know if I bootstrapped different compositions in adobe edge could I play transitions inbetween each one and have it be smooth? Not like fade in/fade out transitions but possibly the two images separating and then the next composition is underneath it?
also when I preview my animation in chrome, parts don't work and just go back and forth while safari plays its smoothly? any suggestions anyone has about anything would be greatly appreciated!

    Alistair,
Yes, I could do that, but all the objects would still be in a single Edge project and Edge would still be running very slowly as a result. Specifically, once I have 3 minutes of time filled, Edge takes 5-10 seconds to perform an action such as duplicate or adding a keyframe. I've had my computer upgraded with a better processor and video card  with no improvement.
I should probably note that we are not using Edge for traditional web or animation design. We're creating an interactive course that walks a user through using software. Most of our courses are very short (1-3 minutes), but this one in particular is an overview and needs to be about 8-10 minutes.
So, what I'm trying to do is create 3 Edge compositions that I can string together (which I can do using a wrapper file and some html code) and have the user be able to move from the last Edge composition to the first while still appearing to be inside the larger course (which I have not figured out how to do).  Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

  • I have an Iphone 4.3.3 and do not have the face time application help. I read that it is supposed to be there. I try clicking on contacts that do have face time but i end up getting the email composition mode help.

I solved my problem myself thanks everyone

thanks huntress you should pick another waiting room for God one where there is less rain and snow. But on the other hand maybe God does not like this waiting room so he regularly skips it!!!! Thanks a lot for your reply.
After I posed the question I ended up solving the issue and sent a message to disregard but I appreciate your prompt reaction it is great.
I solved it by going to settings phone facetime on but had to turn off cellular data as well. Now I turned cel data back on and the feature still shows so that is great.
The second option does not seem to work for me because facetime does not light up on the keypad so I cannot activate it. I will try again or Do you know what i need to do there?
thanks so much for your help for the info and the website

  • Adding video transitions using Multicam in Premiere CC not working

Just tried to a video transition to a Multicam timeline between a camera switch and it does add the transition in the timeline but only plays back as a cut as if no transition was applied. Also, using the shortcut CTRL D doesn't add the transition but does it show up in the history that it applied a transition.
I used a Dissolve transition and it shows the video dissolving between the 2 video source in the transition Effects Control window, just doesn't work in the timeline when playing it back. Rendering the timeline doesn't work either,  still a cut transition.
Actually, just tried the CTRL D shortcut and it is now working.
Now the transition shows up when going to the Export menu and looking at the video in the Preview window and when exported the dissolve is there so the only problem is that the video transitions can't be seen when playing from the timeline.
Decided to close down Premiere, restart it and reload the project and now the transition works in the timeline.
Actually, here what happens. You can't see transitions when the Program monitor is in Multicam mode, you need to switch is back to Composite mode then the transition will preview when playing from the timeline. Now I just checked and you can scrub through the transition and see it when the Program monitor is in the Multicam mode.

  • Final Cut Problem - Duplicate frames when using add composite

I have a problem with Final cut hopefully someone will be able to help.
Clip A & Clip B on one layer and Clip C on another, being used as a transition between the two. Composite mode 'Add' being used on Clip C
When Clip C overlaps both clips in the timeline it causes duplicate frames in Clip B during the 'transition'. If I move it to just overlap Clip A the duplicate frames disappear.
    Any thoughts appreciated
    Thanks

    Hi -
No apologies necessary! I think it may be some of the terms you are using that are throwing me off. A couple more questions:
    prayforsnow wrote:
I exported my movie as a mov (HDV 720p) from imovie and imported into final cut.
I then split the clip with the razor tool into the edits I had previously made in imovie with the intention of adding my compositing clip as a transition between these clips.
OK, I follow that up to "adding my compositing clip as a transition between clips". The compositing clip is the film burn effect that you have built as a separate clip?
I needed to split the clips so that I could move them around the timeline and align them with the composition clip I had. If i don't the composition clip will play for too long over the other clips.
Meaning you needed to adjust your edits so that the film burn will fit correctly as a transition over the scenes below, not masking too much of the scene?
The screenshot I have provided does not show them apart. It just shows the clip split ready to be moved.
    OK
Upon adding my composition clip, frames from the end of the first clip are added to the start of the second creating a 'one cycle loop' regardless of whether these clips are joined (as shown in my screen shot) or moved apart.
Meaning if you separate the two clips, so that there is an actual gap between them, you still see frames from the first clip where there is only gap on the track below?
If i move the composition clip so that it only overlaps one of the clips ( so not really a transition anymore) the extra frames disappear. Move it back and they appear
Meaning if you place the film burn composite over a clip without a transition, it works as expected?
My only question is if, when you adjust the clips by separating them to get your desired spacing, is there really a gap between the first and second clip, or do you drag the end of the first clip to fill in the space created by the gap? That would cause the frames at the beginning of clip 2 to be repeated as they are being shown on the end of the previous (now extended) clip.
    Thanks

  • Custom transition

    Just a quick question,
I'm cutting a documentary and want to create a transition that includes the festival logo. How would I go about creating a transition with the logo?

Tricky part is how your logo is formatted. Provided it has an alpha channel you could try the following...let's say it's a 1 second transition.
    V1 - base video (outgoing)
V2 - logo with a 1 second duration placed at start point of your transition. (preferably a vector graphic w/alpha)
V3 - new video (incoming) placed at start point of your transition.
    -control-click on V3 (incoming video), select composite mode/travel matte-alpha.
-dbl click V2 (logo), select motion tab and use 'Basic Motion' keyframes to blow your logo up from 'zero' to 'beyond full frame' over the 1 second duration.
-cut V3 clip at end of 'transition duration' (at 1 second) and remove 'travel matte/alpha'
Try that and post back if it does/doesn't work.

  • Transition - affecting filters???

When I add a simple cross fade transition (or any other transition for that matter), the effects I've place on the incoming clip don't kick in until the transition is complete . . .I can't figure out why this is happening.
Here's what this portion of the project looks like:
    OUTGOING VIDEO
V2 - filters are a mask, a mask feather, crushed color (composite mode normal)
    V1 - glow filter
    INCOMING CLIP
V2 - Composite mode is set to "hard mix"
    V1 - Line art
(This combination gives me kind of a cartoon effect
When I apply a transition, the cartoon effect I've created doesn't kick in until the transition is complete (in other words, the video on the incoming clip of V1 and V2 appear unfiltered during the transition and then suddenly become visible after the transition is complete).
Any idea why this is happening?
    Thanks!

    Hey Bryce,
The thing is that playing around with keyframed opacity gives you more freedom and options than exporting and re-importing QT movies in order to use standard/default transitions. If you control click your keyframes you can "smooth" the transition and generally you have more control on how to fade out/in (you can add more keyframes and smooth them etc.).
Having said that, whatever you prefer, you know what you are doing.
    Best,
    G

  • Re: Can't get S-Video to Composite on my Satellite A200-1AE

I am trying to connect my laptop with my TV using an S-Video to Composite cable and i get no colour on my TV.
Only black and white. I am trying to find a setting in Nvidia Control Panel to switch from S-Video mode to Composite mode but i get only S-Video and Auto-detect.
Does anyone know something about it?

The port you used on TV. If I connect cable from laptop to S-Video port on TV then I enable S-Video port on my TV.
I have also tested notebook connection to TV using SCART adaptor and used channel on TV reserved for SCART port. The picture was there with colour.
I don't know which TV do you have but on my work everything Ok.
By the way: I have Satellite P200 and I have tested it with S=Video and HDMI. No problems at all.

  • Multi-layered compositions creating overly large compressed files

    Hi there community!
    FCP HD 4.5
I have a composition that involves 3 layers of video and 4 audio tracks. It is only short but when trying to compress a sample for the web I'm having difficulty getting the file size down to something reasonable, like between 3 - 5 MB as with my other clips. I've tried exporting the project in uncompressed format and then trying to compress from that single track file, but FCP treats it just the same as the original. The original has a few effects applied and I also modified the composition mode, so it is somewhat complex. I've been trying to compress to quicktime movie using the following:
    video:
    H.246
    size 400 x 300
    quality: medium
    frame rate: 15 fps
    encode: multi-pass - best
    audio:
    mpeg-4
Resulting file size is 17 MB for a 1 minute clip. Way too high.
These settings are ideal for my other stuff, but this clip is more complex. I'm a professional preparing video content for the web. What is the nack for squashing a complex project without losing too much quality?

You should be using Compressor (moreover, you should upgrade 4.5 to 5.1 before the offer runs out).
Prior to Compressor 2 (and if I want QT 6 compatible quicktimes), I use Sorenson Squeeze. At high quality, I generally get 640x480 resolution at 4MB for 30 seconds. Or I use Compressor and H.264 LAN.
Both do a far superior job to straight export from FCP.

  • A Mercury linear color delimma... bad transitions vs. bad animation

Am I missing something here? I'm writing this as sort of a PSA... if you aren't aware of all sides of this issue, I hope you read the second half because you may not realize it's affecting you, too.
When I enable CUDA or Maximum Render Quality, I basically can't use any one-sided transitions. They look wrong and "pop" at the ends.
Apparently, Adobe forgot to rewrite any of their transitions for a linear color space, so Mercury+CUDA basically "breaks" all the transitions that ship with CS5, causing them to render differently than they do in their originally intended gamma of 1.8. I've heard they've added a linear-compatible transition into CS5.5 called "Film dissolve", but there aren't any in CS5. This seems like a pretty huge oversight... I'm surprised they still haven't fixed it in a patch to the original CS5.
So why not just turn off Maximum Render Quality and CUDA during output?
    Well, there's another big problem.
If you do any kind of stills animation a la "the Ken Burns Effect" in Premiere, you'll quickly find Premiere leaves a "pixel shimmer" or "ripple" effect across the animation because it is using substandard methods to antialias motion. Looks like a cheap NLE from 2002.
So, you're left to choose... do you want bad one-sided dissolves or bad animation? Personally, I believe a good NLE should not leave identifiable footprints in the edit. If you happen to have have *both* in a Premiere CS5 timeline and it goes out on TV, I'll be able to "out" your NLE as Premiere because no matter which output setting you choose, one or the other problem will show up.
SOLUTION 1: Use AE. The simplest solution is probably to avoid Maximum Render quality and avoid keyframing any Motion parameters. Do it all in After Effects.
SOLUTION 2: Use CS4. It may be possible to edit your sequence with all the benefits of MPE and CUDA, and then send your timeline back to Premiere CS4 and have Premiere/Encoder CS4 render it at max quality. I haven't tested this yet, but I'm intrigued by this possibility. I'll try it soon and report back.
Hopefully I am missing something here. I'm an Avid/FCP/AE guy who is still relatively new to Premiere.
P.S. A second issue is lower thirds and alpha graphics. I bet you made all of yours in After Effects with a 1.8 gamma, didn't you? As far as I know, Premiere does not ship with any video effects that easily control the gamma curve of the alpha channel, so there's no quick fix for all of your currently rendered transparent graphics.

I know if I use the MPE in GPU mode transitions between two PIPs will get a funny black border aroud the PIP. CUDA can do some funny things when transitions and filters that do not have CUDA support are used with GPU enabled. I can only hope Adobe is getting ready to switch to Open CL or Open GL because there are a few glitches with Nvidia's CUDA technology. For Quality I almost think CS 4 was better but you don't get the same amount of realtime. I hope PP CS 6.0 is true broadcast quality instead of just realtime previews. Edius can do it with out the use of GPU acceleration.  I think CUDA is a step in the right direction but I also think it needs a bit more time to mature.
