Compressor is breaking up video- Help!

I'm in a situation where we have serious deadlines... and the exported video from Compressor is unacceptable.
I am importing video AVCHD video, which is interlaced, into Final Cut from a Sony HDR-S11. Here are my settings:
Sequence Preset: Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) 1440x1080 30p 48Hz
Capture Present: HDV-Apple ProRes 422 (HQ)
I am also importing TIFF images which are 2-3mb in size and of varying size ratios. I am dissolving in between TIFFs, video etc. It's a straightforward documentary.
I have exported the whole thing into a self-contained QuickTime Movie using "Current Settings". This video looks fine.
My settings for Compressor are:
VIDEO:
H.264
Key Frames: Automatic
Frame Reordering: Checked
Data Rate: 464 kbits/sec, Optimized for: Streaming
Best Quality
720x405
AUDIO:
AAC
96Khz
Best
Filters:
Deinterlace (Algorithm Odd)
Watermark
Now... the compressed final product looks okay until I reach the section with TIFF's. It's as though sync is lost. The picture begins to break up, flicker and flash, until it "stabilizes" again. It doesn't happen with all the pics, but just a few of them.
Does anyone have any clue what I can do to fix this?? The killer for me is that it takes Compressor about 7 hours to export one 27 minute video. Ugh. That's a day of waiting to see if changing this or that will fix this. And since I'm stabbing in the dark, this could take days.... and I just don't have that.
Thanks for reading this far!

I'll give this a whirl (I'm under the impression that Frame Controls adds a lot more time to exports?)
Yes, which was why I recommended the Better setting rather than Best. You can find out how to speed up Compressor here:
http://www.digitalrebellion.com/blog/posts/usingcompressor_with_multiplecores.html
I'm trying to keep my bitrate low so that viewers can stream the video without it constantly buffering. I should probably be lower, but the quality suffers too much.
It's difficult to balance video quality and bitrate. I'd recommend 1000kbps minimum for that frame size. I would imagine the vast majority of your visitors would have a connection above 1Mbps.

  • 10.4.9 breaks FC video capture

Installing the 10.4.9 Update on my eMac 1.42ghz G4 system essentially broke Final Cut's video capture capabilities, showing the same failures with both my FC 4.5 HD and FC Express 2.0 versions of the program.
I have taken a number of steps to confirm that the problem source is the 10.4.9 update, including re-installing 10.4.0 from DVD and then running capture tests before and after re-installing the 10.4.9 software update.
Under 10.4.9 it was impossible to capture more than a few seconds of uninterrupted DV video, even though I was using equipment, software and procedures that had performed reliably many dozens of times previously. Watching the access LED's on my external hard drive illuminated the core of the problem (possibly an issue with storage buffering or Firewire).
When video capture is functioning correctly the system writes to the drive with frequent short bursts at a rate of several times a second. Running under 10.4.9 the video capture attempts have very long periods with no drive activity, followed by long continuous writes. While
those long writes are taking place the input video freezes and falls silent, both on the preview screen and in the resulting movie file on hard disk.
One odd note is that, in testing, I was able to get a few usable video captures by setting the device control to "non-controllable device" and using "Capture Now" mode. However, EVERY capture attempt with device control set to "Firewire" or "Firewire BASIC" would fail and, once the capture function breaks, it stays broken until the system is rebooted, regardless of subsequent device control adjustments or capture mode.
I currently have the system re-installed and re-updated to 10.4.7 and my Final Cut video capture is functioning normally. Based on considerable knowledge of computing and media systems, my own experiences with the 10.4.9 update, and other comments about 10.4.9 that I have read elsewhere,
this latest OSeX update seems to make changes to some critical, low level functions that have the potential of breaking a great deal of software and peripherals. My standing advice to clients and colleagues will be to stay away from 10.4.9 until such time as Apple addresses
    the apparent compatibility problems.

    ......

I'm afraid I can't help you other than to suggest you
post your Final Cut issues in the Final Cut forum
    area here:

I doubt the 10.4.9 broke anything.
I am a very knowledgable and experienced systems tech and have done extensive trouble testing trying to resolve this issue. Acknowledging that there are very large numbers of variables involved in any modern computer process, I have scientifically confirmed that, at least for this system / model / software combination, 10.4.9 is definitely the variable that is breaking my video capture capabilities.
Having stepped through the most of the OS updates under identical hardware, software and preference settings:
OSeX 10.3.x to 10.4.8 == capture functions normally
OSex updated to 10.4.9 == capture broken
Exactly which of the many variables in the 10.4.9 update is causing the breakage is up to Apple to determine; I don't have access the source code like I do with my GNU OSS & Linux systems.
Still, per your suggestion, I will cross post this issue to the Final Cut list. There is always the possibility that some hidden variable in the equation could be causing the conflicts between the software versions I need to rely on and 10.4.9, though I have already tested a number of hardware and preference configurations to eliminate the most probable suspects.

BTW I tried using doferent setings in compressor from CBR and VBR I even pushed up the setings to 8 or 9 BR and still no luck !
does anyone have any idea ?
    Thanks in advence ...

Let's focus attention on just the Sony. (What model and what resolution are you shooting?)
    For now, I'll assume you're shooting 1080i.
Take a representaive clip  into a new sequence. Add a title.
In your sequence, make sure field dominance is set to Upper.
Set render settings to Pro Res 422.
After rendering, export QT self contained.
Import into Compressor (I'm now referring to v3.5).
Select the 90 minute Best quality DVD preset.
Open frame controls and turn on (click the gear icon). Set Resize filter to Best.
Submit burn and check quality on TV.
    Good luck.

  • Download Video Helper For Safari

I'm looking for a similar download video helper that Firefox offers for free, for Safari. Any help is greatly appreciated.

There is the Free  iTube Grabber which can capture almost any audio and/or video stream (it says here) but only works with Intel Macs.
    http://itube-grabber.en.softonic.com/mac
There is also iTubeX which allows you to download videos (Flash, HTML5 and others), .mp3 and .swf files from almost every website as easily as possible:
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/27604/itubex
Lastly: How to download Flash videos and play them in Quicktime using Perian is explained here:
    http://perian.org/#watch
It's the video at the bottom of the page.
Last but not least (as some of the above may not work with Snow Leopard or Lion) there is the 'pwn trick':
For example, the full youtube site for your movie is:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bC2XIGMI ... e=youtu.be
As soon as the movie starts, pause it and add 'pwn' in front of the youtube part of the url so it looks like this:
    http://www.pwnyoutube.com/watch?v=bC2XI ... e=youtu.be
Hit Return and then follow the instructions.

  • Exporting to flash with embedded video HELP

I am working on a presentation that includes a video I shot and edited on FCP. I used compressor to resize and reformat to a mpeg4, which I thought would be a very universal format. However, while it does play nicely in my Keynote presentation, it refuses to export to flash. groan.
Can anyone suggest a video format that will play nicely in my keynote presentation and export to flash?
Note: If it matters or helps: I always post my presentations in flash for my non-mac co-workers. They are able to view them in explorer from the intranet. They can also download, place them on usb flash drives and give them to potential clients. Everything was fine until I started to add video (which of course everyone wants).
    Thank you very much
MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Welcome to the discussions, jimfospace.
Anytime you export to Flash, it will not include the video so, no, there's not a format that will play at all when exported to Flash.

  • FROM FCP X TO COMPRESSOR 4 HD FILE SETTINGS HELP!

    Hello everyone.
I just created my account out of dispair. I have been trying for over a week to find a solution but nothing... I need your expert help.
The situation is as follows: I have a 135 min hd project in fcpx, with many effects and transitions, and text.
    These are the details:
clips are 1440x1080, 25fps, DVCPRO HD 1080i50 compressor, 13,9 mbps data rate
I tried sending it to compressor as HD def: DVCPRO HD 1080i50, leaving everything as it was. The movie was created in about 6 hours and def is incredible, but it is a 118GB file!
I have to transfer the final movie onto DVD STUDIO PRO 4 to create menu an burn it onto a 2L 9 gb dvd.
I have tried sending my movie to compressor in the same format but reducing the bitrate to 6mbps, but quality is awful.
Other attempts at different compressions, such as H264 for DSP at lower bitrates resulted either in extremely poor quality or were interrupted because compressor estimated about 85 hours of work! Unthinkable.
Therefore my question is: can anyone suggest the best compressor settings to get a final movie that is still HD, becomes 1920x1080 res, but will also fit into a 2l dvd once imported in dvd studio pro?
Any suggestion will be very much appreciated!
    Thanks.

I apparently wasn't clear in my responses.
DVD is standard definition. It is not HD. It is, by industry standards – on this side of the pond  anyway – 720X480.
If you want HD, especially with a >2 hour video – you need to encode for Blu Ray,
DVD Studio Pro does not do Blu-Ray. It only does DVD which, again, is SD.
If you want Blu Ray, you will need a Blu Ray burner. If you want nice menus, you need either Adobe Encore or Roxio Toast.
That does not mean that your DVD need look "horrible". People make DVDs from HD material all the time and they look terrific when played from a good player out to a good HD TV. How are you judging your results? Not on a computer  I hope. You need to evaluate it on your TV screen. You may be seeing interlace artifacts on your computer
If it looks bad on your TV, take screen shots of your settings in the Inspector in the Encoder and Frames Control panes and post back.

  • FCP CRASHES WHEN I EXPORT TO COMPRESSOR... Please help.

    Hello everyone,
I'm trying to export my FCP sequence to compressor through FCP and not through a Self Contained Movie, because I hear it produces better results. I Export to compressor and Compressor loads the project and begins to compress... it gets through the audio, and I would guess 75% of the video and FCP crashes. I've tried to do this now 6 times with the same results.
My project is a Panasonic HD 720P and is about 32 minutes long. I don't know if that info will help, but does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks guys, and gals...

    hi,
i can only guess here as you have not provided any information about the crashing itself. Is it Unexpected Error, then a quit; is it a lock up without an error message?
    Things to look for:
    1. Check that the sequence is appropriate for the format you are editing... it is likely that it is as FCP auto checks it on first clip assemble. Check anyway.
    2. Check that the media you are compressing is COMPLETE.. check each scene in the sequence.. sounds like you may have a dodgy scene/media. This would seem likely if you are experiencing crashing always at the same place during compression.
    3. Check to see if you accidently put in any compression markers... take these ALL OUT if you dont need them
    4. Check compressor.. compress a small file of the same format (different scenes) to check compressor is functioning. This also may help you narrow down your dodgy media if there is any.
Hope this is of some help.
    Good Luck.

  • FCE - LOCATING TIMECODE BREAK - Why? Help please

    Hello!
I'm trying to capture a video from camera miniDV.
I select "CAPTURE NOW" but after few seconds (when a scene changes), appears this error :
    LOCATING TIMECODE BREAK

    Please help me...
    Thanks bye

Timecode breaks could be caused by:
    1. Actual timecode breaks on the tape.
    2. Dirty heads in the playback system.
    3. Bad Firewire cable.
    4. Capturing to a USB hard drive
    5. Capturing to an improperly formatted hard drive
    6. Capturing while an anti-virus program is running
If you're using Capture Now, try setting FCP's Device Control to Non-Controllable Device.

  • Breaks during video importing

When I try to import video from my Canon ZR40 over a firewire cable, every minute or few the screen the screen goes blue, it says camera playing for a second, and then it continues importing. When I try to re-import, it does this at different places. I have turned the energy saver to "never" and deselected "start a new clip at each scene break".

    Hi Dana
Hard to figure out the reason for Your problem:
    - drop outs from Your Camera
    - Bad FW-cable
    - Your computer is tied up with other programs like
    FileVault, ScreenSavers, EnergySavers <</div>
    I have turned FileVault OFF
    No ScreenSaver
    No EnergySaver
Next change FW-wire and see if it helps
Next - buy a cleaning tape to Your miniDV Camera and use it as stated.
Still problems then I only knows one way. To make a tape copy via another
miniDV Camera + a new tape (which I would "dummy record with nothing
anything from start to end) and get a 4 - 4 pin FW cable and copy on this
prepared tape. Just to fill the dropouts.
    This can work.
Also You can try to turn-off the import as individual clips - under prefs in
iMovie. Sometimes it helps an esp. when recorded in LP-mode (90 min)
    NOT RECOMMENDED.

  • Exporting video help...

o.k. here it is. I'm not a pro but I'm not new to fcp. I mostly film and edit church events, and they are mostly an hour to an hour and a half long. So I've never had a problem exporting the project to DVD Studio Pro. Their really simple edits (titles transitions and some background music that's it). I do an "export QT movie, name it, leave the settings as they are press save and vuala I import it to DVD Studio pro. (maybe it's wrong, but it's worked for me until now). This film that I'm trying to export is too big, It won't fit into a DVD for it's 4.8gb. the movie is not even 1:50min, but, anyways. I've tried several things exporting it by using QT conversion with QT format and mpeg2 format and when I try to importi it into DVD Studio pro it says incompatible format. I tried doing it through "using compressor" and using Mpeg2-120 fast encode and Mpeg2-120 high quality encode, but as the process begins it fails. HEEEEELP for I'm 5 days late with this movie for it took like 19hours tp export when using the QT exports......I am so behind on this pleeeeeeeease help. I'm using FCP 4.5 HD, Compressor 1.2.1 and DVD studio pro 3( all academic, if it means anything, besides not being able to upgrade)

You just need to set an appropriate bitrate for the duration of your video. You can do this in a number of places. With FCP4.5 and DVD SP3 I would go with the Export to QT Conversion method. Not sure why you had trouble the first time but try this...
Select your sequence in the browser in FCP. Select File - Export to QT Conversion. Select MPEG-2 from the format pulldown and hit Options. There's two tabs, the one on the right will give the bitrate options. I would select one-pass VBR, set the max bitrate to about 7.8Mbps and move the target bitrate slider around until you see that your file size is as big as it can get without going over for a DVD. It should show you the expected file size at the bottom. I'd keep it at or under about 4GB. Give it a name, export, then import this MPEG-2 and AIFF file into DVD SP, author and burn.

  • Compressor setting for 227min video to DVD9

I have a 227 min. video (no audio) captured from Super8 rolls shot in the late 60's. It's edited in FCE HD, PAL. I've tried to use bitrate calculators, but they all give a caluclated bitrate to use without VBR encoding. I'd like to get the best possible result with Compressor 2 and DVDSP 4 using Two pass VBR Best option, but I can't figure out what values I need for Average and maximum bitrate to make the output m2v file fit on a DVD9 disk. I've tried Average as low as 3.5 and Max 7.0, but the resulting enoced file was just above 10Gb and too big for a DVD9 disk. Should I drop the average bitrate below 3.5 ?
What effect would it have on the encoded filesize to also drop the Maximum bitrate ?
Any good suggestions on how I can achieve my goal will be much appreciated !!
    G5 Dual 2.5GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)
    G5 Dual 2.5GHz

Don't forget that with VBR you are aiming for an average bit rate. Some of it will be higher, some lower, but overall the encoder will aim to reach the average for the footage. This means that your bit rate calculator (which should be stating about 4.6MBPS in your case) is what you set the average to.
If you set the maximum to be 5.5MBPS then the encoder will allocate whatever bits it needs to allocate to the sections that can take a lower rate, accommodating the higher rate sections to achieve the average overall of 4.6MBPS.
If you set the upper to be 8MBPS, then the longer the sections that use this upper rate, the harder it will be to achieve the average, and subsequently the encoder will allocate lower than expected rates to the sections it can.
Using two pass will help significantly, but don't go expecting miracles if you make the maximum too high!
Oh - and do run a test on a section that you think will demand a higher bitrate overall. Choose a section of fast action, pans or zooms, etc, and encode that at different rates, then see what it looks like. Try using 4, 4.3 and 4.6 as your average settings, and 5, 5.5 and 6 as the max...

  • Can Compressor convert my NTSC video to PAL?

I am trying to convert my NTSC footage to PAL. I was given a tip that the key is in the compressing stage and then use Studio Pro and burn a PAL DVD. Is this correct?
Thanks so much!!!! it really helps!!!

i saw you on the other forum.., you got fobbed off to this one.., actually you can 'convert' to PAL in both DVD Pro and Compressor..,
if you can use either at all you already know it.., do you know where the settings are in compressor.., (is your compressor working??).., an you load settings and assign a sourse and a destination.., if you ca do those things you can already 'convert.'
what ever, assuming compressor is working on your puter, open compressor and save a project name (give the project a name.) now in the
hit 'add file' (the icon, top left)
go to the settings/destination window (the window that covers the bottom left of your screen)
click the triangle that says 'apple'
click the triangle that says 'DVD best quality 120 minutes (if thats how long you want it.., as long as your movie is under this time your OK)'
drag that setting to the long strip in the window above (top right), check the sourse so you know where the file is going.
look in the inspector window and click the icon, second from the right, this is your encoding settings.
click, video format; change the setting to PAL.., check the frame rate has changed to 25fps
back at the window, top right, you will see 'submit.'.., hit that and it will send the job to the render window.., watch the magic
the same can be done from the inspector in DVD pro.
if this was too confusing, sorry, .., there must be some tuts somewhere.., try 'larry jordons' web site, or maybe 'peachpit.com'..??
