Computer Power

Hello, I decided I could post this here because I use my computer for nothing except running logic.
Trying to decide if I should purchase a new Mac Pro or a new Macbook Pro.
I use logic for film scoring and sometimes use up to 50 tracks in sequencing with East/West patches running through Kontakt. Can I assume that the new Macbook Pro could handle my work load without any problems?

that kinda ***** that you received no responses. i'm in a similar quandary myself.
I have 2 three year old macbook pros (the 17" bought used and has a few bugs I haven't been able to resolve) and a much older desktop (dual G4 with the mirrored doors that roars like a jet when it's "idling" and gave up trying to make it quieter for studio use). I want to move to all virtual instruments and toss/store the midi gear and samplers because I need to be more mobile (but not so mobile that it necessitates a laptop for music). my macbook pro's, while still very functional with the midi setup and regular computing end up choking if I try to run similar tracks through the virtual instruments or start packing on acoustic guitar and vocals. so i'm looking at either the new i7 imac or macbook pro, but have read of people having the fans start spinning when they start working, which is what happens also with my laptops (hence the coolers running under them-so that's a fix for an i7 laptop). so i'm thinking maybe a new or recent mac pro... but i'm not sure how loud those things get either. if i had an isolation booth, this wouldn't matter as much, but i'm now helping my dad look after my mom, so this isn't possible. Perhaps noise will always be an issue... maybe i need an iso for a mac pro
too many things to consider and too many choices available:
1-iMac 27" i7
2-Macbook Pro 17" i7
3-recent MacPro
anyway, thought i'd post and wondering if you found any answers elsewhere or have you purchased something already and if so, are you happy with your choice.

  • PCI-GPIB does not like returning from computer power-save mode. I need to restart the application. Uggh! Customer not happy.

It seems volatile memory is lost on the PCI GPIB Card. When the system returns from power-save, I cannot get to my GPIB instruments. I have to close the application and restart it. I've tried unregistering and reregistering the gpib globals and resetting the device interfaces (reissuing the ibdev command) without luck. I am using Visual Basic 6, but I also get the Measurement and Automation Explorer to fail in the same way, so I don't think it is my development environment.

Can you change your power save settings? What operating system
    are you running?
Also, some BIOS's have options for power save. For example, recent
IBM's can be set to maintain power to all peripherals, or only to main
memory. Of course, you would want it to maintain power.
I suspect the GPIB board and its driver are completely unable to
handle power save operation. It probably was never considered while
    it was being designed.

  • Help with using itunes with 4s library after i upgraded to iPhone 5 and computer power supply went

long story hopefully an easy fix....
on wensday my power supply went and had to ship computer across country to Puget Computer Systems as we weren't sure if it was power supply or mobo...luckily it was power supply.
i daily backed up iphone 4s with itunes (10.7) as i do all music manually, playlists, etc. have like 3,000 plus songs, videos, audiobooks, mail aaccts and about 48 apps.
so next day (sept 19th) apple comes out with iOS 6 which i update my 4s to with no problem. I wanted a day to play with it to learn my way around.
next day i wait in line for 8 hours overnite and was #2 in line at apple store for my ATT 32gb white iPhone 5. while at apple store I get my icloud backup which gets all paid music, apps, etc since itunes version 10.3 (i always did both backups so as not to lose my contacts more than anything.
I have other paid stuff that is in library on computer along with audiobooks and about 2700 more songs.
my icloud backup put the playlists on iPhone but not most of the music for them as lots were ripped from my cd's.as i double them up making a copy on iPhone and a copy on itunes.
So I have been using iPhone 5 with no problems just don't have all of itunes library on it. My computer is coming back this week how do I plug in iPhone 5 via USB (which will be seen as new phone even though it has same name) and use my existing iTunes 10.7 library which the backups in iTunes still has iOS 5.1.1 on it?
There must be an easy way of doing it as i don't want to wipe off iphone 5 again as i don't see any purpose my library is all organized perfectly. I know my way around windows 7 pro 64 bit pretty well just don't know what itunes is going to say once it sees "joe's iPhone" again and installs the usb drivers and icon for it. what will it ask in regards to library and how do i use it with previous iOS on it?
Thank you very much for the help as I am going to need it.
yes i broke the cardinal rule of cross posting and apoligize  for it just amazed i couldn't find answer via google nor any apple store genius knew it either.

    Hi All,
    Any help?
No one has any answers here amoungst all this apple knowledge?
    Thank you

  • [Resolved] Minimal WM environments and modern computing power

Hi, I'm not trying to start any flamewars with this thread.  With that out of the way, I'll continue.
I have wondered quite often why there are always some (or more than some in this community!) people in every linux community that prefer to run a very minimalist setup.  I will find no shortage of people who have i5/i7's with 8GB of Ram and gods know what else in their hardware.  However, these same people insist on running a WM that would be just as happy on a 386Mhz with 128MB of ram and using a coloured Hercules, or Trident, video card.*  Why do that to your super-fast-with-gobs-of-ram-and-cpu-power-computer ?  What is the rationale behind doing so?
I subscribe to the philosophy that unspent/cached ram is wasted resources/ram. I've seen others say the same thing and that question is never really answered or rebutted (no, I'm not asking for a rebuttal, just pointing out my observations).  And this begets the next question about other computer habits a lot of people have, such as trying to squeeze out as much power as their system can use but they still use a blank wallpaper and wonder how else they can "optimize" their setup.  I don't get it.
As I'm Canadian, I'll issue a blanket apology in advance to any people I've offended and/or people whos goldfish is in emotional torment due to this thread.
*To anyone too young to remember these things, feel free to look them up on Wikipedia, or the like, and see how the old guard used to do computing.  You'll be fascinated or horrified; guaranteed either one of those emotional states will show up when you start the reading frenzy on Wikipedia.

First off, let me just say that as an American I find the entire idea of Canada vulgar, blasphemous and inconsiderate of my feelings.
Second, to answer your question:  I'm actually getting a new Thinkpad next week with the works:  i7 quad-core, high-def monitor with dedicated Nvidia graphics card, mSata 40-gig SSD along with a 750-gig HDD--the only thing in it that's "standard" is the 4 gigs of RAM.  And still, I'll be using Awesome with it (though I'll probably try out KDE with it just for curiosity's sake, just like dhave said in his post above).  Most of the reasons here have been covered, but I'll  chime in anyway:
    - Have you ever noticed that with certain apps (e.g. music players, backup programs, bittorrent clients) you actually spend more time monitoring them than interacting with them?  It's nice to have all those windows neatly arranged and available at a single key-press, rather than needing to jerk my wrist around every two seconds just to see something.
    - Most minimal WMs offer users finer control over their working environment and, since they aren't updated too frequently, usually provide a stable environment that only needs to be configured once in a great while.
    - Newer, more powerful hardware + bloated software = wasted money, really.  If the only advantage that GNOME or KDE have to offer is making the things I do throughout the day look fancy, then I feel like I've been cheated in a way.  Spending $1200 USD on a new laptop which, in a couple of years, won't run KDE any better than my current one does now doesn't seem like a sound investment.  Running a light-weight environment on that same hardware will guarantee that it runs faster than what I have now, and will stay that way for years.  Really, the definition of "software bloat," in a practical sense, is essentially "Software which over time requires greater resource expenditure to accomplish the same basic tasks of its predecessor,"  which fits both of the big DEs.  I should also point out that I use several KDE apps and enjoy doing so; it's Plasma and KWin that eat up more than their share of resources and bog my system down.
    - Frankly, the more control you wish to exercise over your own setup, the less practical the big DEs seem.  If I wish to control package management, network utilities, system monitoring, disc burning, and music playing from a terminal--while using a graphical file manager, bittorrent client, feed reader and web browser of my choice, as well and things like GIMP occasionally--then all a DE really ends up providing that I can't get elsewhere is a window decorator and a panel.  Of course, in some cases the DE's equivalents of the utilities I mentioned end up getting installed anyway, so they just eat up hard drive space without getting used (we're privileged enough to largely avoid this problem in Arch--thanks, devs!).
Really, it's a matter of personal taste; I largely agree with your view on RAM, although I don't like using anything that simply eats it up for no good reason.  I like to reserve RAM for things like web browsing, /tmp and preloading app files.

  • Computer Power Failure

During the last month or so my computer would unexpectedly lose power. The computer would just shut off as if unplugged. I checked all power cords for loose connections, these were fine. The latest software update done on my computer was the iTunes 7.5/QT Player 7.3 update - this was causing my computer to crash when syncing my iPod, so I wonder if this software update was part of the power failure problems. A few days ago, the power failure became unbearable - power would drop repeatedly, many times immediately following startup. After backing up my hard drive, I updating my OS to the 10.4.11 update - manually downloaded from the Apple website, not through Software Update.
Since the 10.4.11 update three days ago I have had no problems with power failure. This morning my computer has last power twice now. What could be potential sources of this problem? Is there a way to fix this?

  • Computer power down/crashing

    Hi,
Can you please help?  My computer has started 'crashing' intermittently in recent weeks.  I have managed to save all my data to an external drive but need to get this working as I rely on it daily for work.
All the lights are on eg. mains, power, battery (fully charged) and hard dics (this light is blue and flickering).
It happens when I'm using my documents only or on the internet. It might work for a couple of hours max but today only seconds to 10 minutes.
I have reformmatted, and reloaded the start up disc and Microsoft Enterprise 2007.
Any suggestions as to what is wrong and how I can mend it would be gratefully recieved, thanks, Annakizzy

    Hello again,
If my battery is not holding it's charge I presume it's time to replace it.  Could this also be the cause of the power down/crashing?
    Thanks,
    Anna

  • Computer power issues ! turns on then off turns on then off ! Help Please !

When I attempt to turn on my computer the power light comes on and I hear the fans running but after a second or 2 the light goes off and the fans stop running, after a count of 2 the light comes on the fans start up again and the same thing happens again, on off on off I don’t have to touch the button the only way I get it to stop is pull the plug from the wall. I thought maybe it was a power supply issue so I replaced this with a new one but I got the same results. Does anyone have an ideas????

    Dear Customer,
Welcome to the HP Consumer Support forum.
In order to isolate the issue, please try and perform few basic steps as follows:
    1. Open the hood and ensure the 4 or 6-wire power supply cable is seated into the connector on the system board
    2. Check if a device is causing the problem by removing ALL attached devices (such as hard, diskette, or optical drives, and expansion cards).
    3. Power on the system.
    4. If the system enters the POST, then power off and replace one device at a time and repeat this procedure until failure occurs.
    5. Replace the device that is causing the failure.
    6. Continue adding devices one at a time to ensure all devices are functioning properly.
    7. Locate the header and jumper labeled CLR_CMOS
    8. Remove the jumper from pins 2 and 3.
    9. Place the jumper on pins 1 or 2.
    10. Put the jumper back on pins 2 or 3
    11. Replace the access panel
    12. Reconnect all the disconnected devices one by one and then power on the unit and check if the issue persists.
In case issue persists please get back to us and we would be glad to assist you.
Hope this helps, for any further queries reply to the post and feel free to join us again.

Im running a 2005 Dell XPS

I get a BSOD (Blue Screen of DEATH) every once in awhile.  Mostly at startup.
The code seems to be something with hard drives.

I also have a Nvidia 9800GT card with 1024MB RAM with 2 six power ran to it also.
I have looked on the outside of my case but cant see what my PSU power is.
I know I could open it up but was wondering if there was any software kinda like CPU-Z that could read what is inside my computer ?
Maybe something that could add up all that is inside and see how much is being used ?
I will be building a new i7 soon but for now this is what I have.

    Glenn:
On most motherboards I've owned there is a Hardware/Health area of the BIOS where voltage problems are indicated. The power supply is one of the most neglected pieces of hardware on a computer.
There was a time when Dell used power supplies on their computers that had the positive and negative leads that connect to the motherboard reversed. Of course the motherboard was designed to accept this reverse setup.  This pissed a lot of people off, because a standard replacement power supply would blow out the board. I don't know when Dell discontinued this practice, but you should check your Dell model before replacing the power supply.
I recommend you find your power supply model# and then use one of the online power supply wattage calculators to see if your power supply is supplying enough wattage. I believe newegg.com has one of these calculators.

  • Creative Cloud and Computer Power Mgmt.

On a week old Windows 8 base laptop computer my Sleep and Hibernate stopped working. I went through the common steps of disabling mice, media shares, etc. The laptop still would not automatically go to sleep at the times specified in the Power Plan settings. I would have to manually put it to sleep. No solution. So I reenabled all the devices and settings I disabled during trouble shooting.
THEN I quit the Creative Cloud service running in the Notification tray and immediately Sleep and Hibernation worked.
I tested this several times with CC running and not running. 100% results with CC service being the problem.

  • Google maps uses to much computer power

    Hi,
First I want to say that dont understand much about computers.
So my problem is everytime I open the new google maps (using the latest chrome) in couple of minutes my computer becomes really how and I start hearing the fans going. I am using iStatsPro to look at some parameters and GPU goes up to 90 degrees celcius.
I want to ask if this is normal?
I study civil engineering and my hoppy is photography so I use photoshop, autocad, sketchup and at the same time have mails, itunes, skype and evernote open for exapme and I dont really the fans when I am using this programs and in my opinion they require much more power than google maps. (gave you this info just so that you know what I usually run)
I play games from time to time like Guild Wars 2 and then I can hear the fans but this is normal
My computer is the latest MacBook Pro 15" (the more powerful one).
Sorry for my language and hope that I have given you guys enough informations.

Chrome appears to be about the worst choice for Browsers in your situation. It has know problems including memory leaks.
I suggest you switch to Firefox or Safari, and you will have much less trouble.

  • [Athlon64] Computer power cycling randomly upon shut down.

Ok, for some reason my machine has started cycling power for a second in a cycle when I power down sometimes.
If I select Turn Off computer from Windows XP, the computer shuts down.
Then, I see the power light blink....the diagnostic lights of the motherboard, all four blink, the fan clicks and spins for a second.
This happens repeatedly. I tried unplugging the computer, then plugging it back in. As soon as I plug it back in, the process starts. The fan spins up, power light blinks on then off...diagnostic lights (all 4) go on, the network plug goes on. Now, this just happens automatically. I do not have to press the power on switch.
It's started happening with some regularity. I usually leave my computer running for days, so perhaps that's why I haven't experienced this problem more often.
Any ideas on what could be happening?

From what you are saying it doesn't sound like it is running well now.
I would do a reset and see if it will post. Then run Memtest86 at the correct RAM timings top see what you get. Otherwise the only other thing I can assume is the PSU went or maybe one of the componants somewhere in the box which will require more extensive troubleshooting. You are going to have to start somewhere.
Oh if you have overcooked the machine set it back to defaults.

  • Lenovo Ideapad flex 15d computer power issues

My Ideapad Flex recently developed two issues.
Problem 1: When the computer goes to sleep (via start menu, closing the lid, or being inactive) the hardware turns off completely. In Windows 8.1's event viewer there are two errors that state that power failed unexpectedly.
This has occured with the power adapter connected, and without. It also occured for Ubuntu 14.04.
Problem 2: The computer (when powered down) only occasionally responds to the power button, and fails to boot when it does. I have found a temporary workaround - resetting the BIOS - however that only works one time per reset.

I just purchased a flex 15D a noticed that upon start up, there's lighting behind the keyboard, and (being new to PC laptops) it took me two nights to figure out that the only way to turn it on is Fn+space.

  • Sharing computing power between macpro and macbook pro

Hey all... someone mentioned to me that I can connect my latptop and desktop together so that I can "combine" processsing power. I use various music creation software, logicpro and protools and would like to use the laptop to offload/run the plugins and the desktop to run the audio programs. Can this be done? If so, how? I will also post this to the Logic forum. Thanks.

macpro and macbook pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

i must be humorously challenged... LOL... I am using my Macs for processing audio via Protools and Logic. What I wanted to do was to offload some memory intensive programs to the laptop, stuff like Altiverb, Soundtoys and NI software instruments. I generally have no issues running the Logic plugs but add BFD, NI Absynth, Soundtoys Echoboy/Filter Freak and Altiverb, plus Sample Tank etc... and I can melt down the MacPro even with 4G Ram... not so much running Logic but for sure with ProToolsLE.

  • What is "DirectoryService"? and why is it taking up all my computing power?

My powerbook has been running this process called DirectoryService and it has been taking up 70-90% of my CPU (that's what my istat nano widget tells me anyway). I've restarted but when the computer comes back on the process is still running. I can only assume this is why everything on my computer is acting very sluggish and my fan won't stop running. When I Spotlight "DirectoryService" two folders come up, and they are both filled with files called DirectoryService.error.log.(some number) or DirectoryService.server.log.(some number) Any hints on what this is and how to make it stop killing my computer? Thanks
Additional info - looking at my activity monitor, it lists no process called directoryservice.. the stats are as follows, though. User ~25%, system~75%, nice=0%, idle =0%. The only application open is Safari.

Open a Terminal window and type top, without the stars. See if it shows up there.
Running a network of any kind that its trying to connect to?

  • TS1587 My friend has a G4 that will NOT turn on at all.  The monitor power button will light up, but monitor won't turn on; the the computer power button lights up when pressed but won't stay on and nothing else happens.  He said it USED to at least turn

Anyway, not sure if my question was sent, so here it goes:  My friend's G4 won't power on....the power button lights up briefly when pressed, but nothing happens....and, cannot even get the montior to power on...does the same thing.   He said it used to at least turn on, but now it's doing this.   Help!!??  What should we do??

If you are able to use a multi-meter, you can test to see if the power supply is culprit. Use the Power Mac G4: Power Supply Voltage Test  (Sawtooth G4) document to aide you in the proceedure.
If not the Sawtooth, Power Mac G4 (Gigabit Ethernet): Power Supply Voltage Test.
If a Quicksilver, use the pinout of the QS PSU connector here:
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/tips/MDDps_mods/MDD_PSMods.html#update
    and a testing description here:
    http://www.jcsenterprises.com/Japamacs_Page/Blog/D275729F-09DA-4FBB-96B3-BEEEB2C 04619.html
The test description is for a MDD, but the basics are the same.
If a MDD,follow my instructions in the linked articl above.
One should also try a PMU reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1939
One should also  replace the 1/2 AA PRAM battery.
Also, check that the 20, 22, 24 pin connector is properly fitted to the motherboard, and that the wires are properly inserted in the connector. There is also a 10 wire ribbon, which goes from the motherboard to the power button board. Make sure that the ribbon is firmly connected at both ends, and that there is no apparent damage to the ribbon.
If the power supply tests good in a MDD, the power switch board could be suspect.
