Computer to Watch TV Confined to Bed

I'm confined to bed for at least six months. I've got my iBook G4 on the hospital table but it isn't powerful enough to watch most tv shows, i.e. Dancing with the Stars. In the evening Hubby connects the mac to our standard definition tv so we can watch (sort of) a show from Hulu. We're sure the cable 5 Mbp connection is good so we are discussing getting a new mac BUT from what I've read here that sweet little 13" isn't a good choice, nor the 15". It sounds like a 17" is required for HD because of the GPU (not sure what that is). BUT I don't want 17" "lap top". Should I be looking at a PC for video? and keep the iBook for our computer needs? (Not even sure there are small -- hospital-table size -- PC's good for video.)

Ok but do you want to watch from a laptop perched on your lap or perhaps on a bedside table? If you want to use your broadband to watch HULU TV on a bigger screen then yes, a 17" MacBook Pro would work but it is a bit overkill. Now if it is in your lap you're going to have to rest it on your thighs because it is a bit too big to watch TV full screen from your lap.
That being said - you'd need an internet connection, preferably a direct connection via ethernet to the MacBook Pro because WiFi - tho- good and possibly applicable, runs slower and you'd probably get screen freezes if you connected via WiFi (altho it is entirely plausible and the best advice for running a 17" MBP).
Now if this were me in your situation I would purchase a second iMac for the bedroom - of course you'd have to have it within arm's reach so you could open your browser and get to Hulu to watch your favorite programs but for the price of a 17" MBP you could probably purchase a 24" iMac cheaper either new or refurbished. BTW, Nothing wrong with refurbished, these are just machines that are returned to Apple for one reason or another and fully checked out and placed on sale at a reduced price. Its not as though the machine is returned to a third party company that uses questionable parts to fix a problem, Apple simply replaces the bad part with one of their own parts, thoroughly checks the machine, gives you a nice warranty and sells it at a nice lower price.
A 24" screen is HUGE and can be seen from across the room but you are dealing with watching television through a browser and not directly over the air through digital signal. And you are dependent on receiving that signal over the internet which can be good and bad (good with a direct connection, could be troublesome with WiFi and a bit more expense). Maybe that's your concern?
WiFi. Do you have WiFi in the house or do you know? I don't think standard iMacs come with a built-in Airport Express card (mine doesn't) and that means you'd have to buy a WiFi router i.e., Apple's separate product called Airport Express (AE). Your internet cable connects directly to the AE and broadcasts a signal about 300 feet - enough to take your MBP out to the barn and watch Hulu if you had one (:-)).
I hope this information is helpful. I'm shooting from the cuff here because I'm not thoroughly understanding your wants/needs and what you've got to work with.
One other thing: ever hear of EZTV? Google it and take a look. I'm not sure the forum will allow me to discuss it here.

There are many variables here that it is hard to pre-guess your aim and/or intentions.

I rented a movie on my iPad but cannot move it to my computer to watch on tv via Apple tv. How do I transfer the rented movie to my computer?

I just rented a movie from my iPad2 and tried to play it through my ATV2 with AirPlay and same problem.... This is absurd guys. Apple I know there are copyright hoops to jump through but come on!! The whole pitch behind AirPlay and AppleTV was to make it easy to watch my purchases on my TV no matter what device they were on. Now I've got to hold my iPad in front of my face to watch a movie for nearly 3 hours!! And when I go to the support site I have no option other than to send an email to billing, screw this. I've not bought a DVD since I purchased my ATV2 over a year ago but if you guys are gonna pull this crap then what incentive do I have to continue the use of something that may or may not work the way it was advertised.
By the way, this is the first time I've had this problem because I normally rent straight off the ATV or my computer, which by the way I was considering replacing my PC with an iPad but looks like you guys aren't ready for me to make that kind of a switch.
Don't tell us that a product will do XY and Z then put limits on Y sending to Z.

  • I have rented a movie on my apple TV, and would like to have it available on my computer to watch. How do i watch it on my computer without getting charged again?

I have rented a movie on my apple TV, and would like to have it available on my computer to watch. How do i watch it on my computer without getting charged again?

You can't if your rented it on your Apple TV - from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1657 :
If you download a rented movie on your computer: You can transfer it to a device such as your Apple TV (1st generation), iPhone, iPad, or iPod if it’s a standard-definition film (movies in HD can only be watched on your computer, iPad, iPhone 4 or later, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV). Once you move the movie from your computer to a device, the movie will disappear from your computer's iTunes library. You can move the movie between devices as many times as you wish during the rental period, but the movie can only exist on one device at a time.
If you download a rented movie on your iPhone 4 or later, iPad, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV: It is not transferable to any other device or computer.

  • Can I download TV shows to one computer and watch them on another?

I'm living in South Africa and my internet connection is really choppy. I don't want to waste the bandwidth by trying to download TV shows until they come through. Can I have my parents in the US download episodes for me and burn them to DVD and then watch them on my computer or will they refuse to play on a different computer? Please offer suggestions.

No, sorry, you can't. TV shows from the iTunes Store cannot be burned to a video DVD, and the content can only be played on a computer that can be authorized to the iTunes Store account through which the content was purchased, which can only be done in the US. These restrictions are all in place by demand of the content owners.
Wish we could help you with this, but we can't. Sorry.

  • Copy dvd on computer to watch from computer

Want to simply put dvd in mac and copy it to then find it later and watch again, i have copied it and try to double click to watch but it wont open, it just gives me imformation, why can't i copy and just open idvd and watch it....Slow learner!
i have toaster, and mactheripper(which crashes) and handbreak(also crashes)
    no idea...

Actually, removing the encryption would only be a violation in the USA and other countries who followed suit with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Removing encryption is not illegal in many countries. Pearls doesn't specify where she is located in the world.
Pearls, If you are having crashing problems with your computer, you may need to do some basic Mac OS maintenance. Here is an excellent page to start with which goes through many of the things you should do and give links to free programs to help you do it...
    http://www.macattorney.com/ts.html
Run your machine through the maintenance apps and see if you can get those two programs running properly.

  • How do i authorise my computer to watch downloaded movies?

    how?

For a computer running Mac OS X, move the cursor to the very top of the computer's screen, click on Store in the menu bar, and choose Authorize this Computer.
For a computer running Windows, press the Alt and S keys and choose Authorize this Computer, or click here, follow the instructions, click on Store in the menu bar, and choose Authorize this Computer.

  • Apple TV needs iTunes computer running to watch movies

Why do I need the iTunes app open on my computer to watch movies if sharing is enabled?

Looks like a bug in iTunes 11.  Set your iTunes server computer sleep preference to "never" and hope Apple release a fix for this

  • My iPhone won't let me watch my video

Today, I took a video of a little boy break dancing, and it is 42 seconds long. Then, at the end of the dance, I went back to my video to watch it, and a pop up showed up and said "This movie format is not supported." Is there something wrong with my phone? Because this has never happened before. I tried putting it on my computer to watch it, but that didnt work either. It wouldn't let me watch it on QuickTime or Windows Media Player. I also can watch all my other videos I've taken. Only the one I took today won't work. I have also tried restarting my phone, but that doesn't seem to work either.

It is covered in the basics section of the manual:

  • How do I use airplay to stream a DVD movie playing in my computer to display on my TV?

How do I use airplay to stream a DVD movie playing in my computer to display on my TV?
I have a 2nd generation Apple TV and computer is a 2011 Macbook Pro. Processor  2.8 GHz Intel Core i7. Memory  4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3. Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB. Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63). Storage: about 500GB free out of 750GB.
I have a DVD player within my computer. Trying to play a movie from my computer to display onto my TV using my Apple TV airplay. But the airplay icon is not showing or giving the option to play a movie onto my TV.
I've installed all software updates and still I'm not able to have this functionality.
I assume this functionality exists where I can play a DVD on my computer, but watch it on my TV using my Apple TV, correct?
Thanks for your help solving this puzzle.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, OS X 10.8 or better and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). You can see which Mac you have and which operating system you are using by selecting 'About this Mac' from the Apple menu in the top left corner of your Mac and selecting the 'More Info' button.
AirPlay Mirroring from a Mac also requires a fairly robust network.
You may find a third party product that you can use instead of AirPlay.

  • How can I watch a DVD movie on my Satellite A200-1HE with WXP?

    Hello,
I have purchased a Satellite A200-1HE notebook and have uninstalled Windows Vista. Now I have installed my own purchased copy of Windows XP and downloaded the drivers from Toshiba web site. But now I want to use the computer to watch DVD videos and/or write CD disks, for example, and I cannot find the software provided with the notebook (Intervideo, Disk Creator, etc.).
Do I have RIGHTS for that software? How can I download and install them FOR FREE, since I just don't want Vista, I want to use XP?
    Thank you
    Wagner R. Landgraf

    > How can I download and install them FOR FREE, since I just don't want Vista, I want to use XP?
This additional software was bundled only with the Toshiba image and cannot be downloaded for free! You must understand that there are different copyright restrictions and only original Toshiba software (drivers & Utilities) can be downloaded from the Toshiba page.

  • Issue playing movies downloaded from iTunes on TV when linked to computer via HDMI cable.

Recently I purchased the advance digital copy of "Star Trek Into Darkness" as it was it was released just in time for  moving some people into another state; we planned to watch it when we rested for the day.  After hooking my windows 7 laptop up to a Samsung flatscreen TV using an HDMI cable, iTunes refused to play the movie.  It would play when the computer was disconnected from the TV, and the same error would appear when reconnected.  The error stated that I had to be connected to an "HDCP compatible device."
Is this some way of iTunes forbidding me from watching movies downloaded from their service when connected to an exterior device?  My computer has no issues playing other content, such as netflix, when connected to a TV.
For me it's pointless to buy movies now from iTunes; I feel like I've wasted $20.  Why on earth would I want to sit in front of a computer to watch it when there's a TV five times the size available?

    Hello happylilvampyr,
Unfortunately, this is due to a lack of HDCP support provided by the TV in use. More information regarding HDCP can be found in the following article.
iTunes for Windows: Unable to view or play HD video content that requires HDCP
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3354
As an alternative, you can always download the movie in standard definition, which will allow for viewing on non-HDCP devices.
When you purchase an HD video on a supported device or computer, only HD video will be downloaded. To download the SD version, you need to download the video again from your Purchased page. Conversely, if you purchase an HD video on an unsupported device, the SD version will be downloaded. Then, you will need to download the HD version from your Purchased page.
