Computer will not finish turning on/booting up?

Help--my mac desktop will not boot up??  It just turns on and goes to the spinning apple forever...It will not boot into the main screen?? Have unplugged and restarted without success..Only 2 years old..

The install option (there is no Archive & Install in 10.6) will give you new system files while preserving everything else. Then you must update from whatever version is on the DVD.

Try the Safe Boot first, but Permissions repair for this is a complete waste of time.

  • Computer will not finish booting

I was recently out of town for six weeks and when I returned, I started up my 1.25 ghz iMac with Leopard (the precise OS version I selected for this is a guess; I can't get onto the computer and check). It started fine but froze after I opened Mail. After attempting to reboot, it will no longer finish booting. I hear the start-up noise and then I see the grey screen with the Apple logo and the little spinning gear. However, soon thereafter the the computer completely cuts off. I've tried starting in safe mode (as far as I can tell, that entails holding down Shift after the noise and letting go when the logo and spinning gear appear) but nothing happens. I think I may have installed the latest update before I left on May 11th, but I cannot remember. Before this date, the computer was running fine.
    Any suggestions?

Was the computer unplugged during the time you were out of town? If so, the PRAM battery probably ran down. A dead PRAM battery can cause startup problems. Have you tried zapping the PRAM? Instructions are here:

  • Computer will not finish starting up...

Recently I was surfing various myspace profiles (not my fault! I normally avoid it like the plague but I was looking for a specific ad for a friend). Like everyone else's problems with MySpace, Safari crashed. This wouldn't have been a big deal, but more than just that happened. I waited a few minutes for it to possibly "unfreeze" but to no avail, so I tried to force-quit, which then started freezing up other programs. So the next logical step for me? I manually shut-off the computer by holding the power button. After waiting about 10 or so seconds I tried turning it back on... It seems to start loading but instead of the usually quick start-up the computer takes forever to just get to the first white screen with the Apple and the little swirly thing below.
I thought it had frozen after waiting about 5 minutes, so I tried turning it off and on again... nope, same result. So the next time I waited, and after aproximately 25 minutes the screen went blue. After about 4 or 5 minutes the window that shows the MacOSX loading process opened up, but after waiting for about 10 minutes nothing happened beyond that. So I tried the simple unplugging everything and waiting a while to plug it back in, and now even after waiting aproximately an hour, my mac won't even get to the blue screen.
So I'm getting a little paranoid... any help?
(Also, sorry I posted this a few hours ago in the Mac Mini forum, but this forum seems more frequently posted at, and I'm mostly sure the problem is a software issue not hardware.)

Try executing the Single User Mode when starting up:
    1. Press Command + S keys together while starting up, release only when you see a blank black screen with scroll of text flowing
    2. When all the text stops, you'll see a prompt at the end
    3. Type in the command:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
You can find this exact command just a few lines above the prompt
    4. Hit return and wait for the process to finish; This is in essence booting and repairing the disk using Disk Utilities without using the physical OS disc
    5. You'll see 1 of either 2 results outcome at the end: If it says this disk appears to be OK or something, OR something about Files Being Modified. The later simply says certain files have been repaired.
    6. If you run the command again, this time round the final report will be the disk is OK
    7. Type "reboot" to restart the Mac normally.
Hope this will help you boot up your mac, cheers

  • Booting the compute: It wants to start then the screen get a big red stop sign and will not finish booting

I turn on the computere.  It starts to boot I get the apple logo in the center of the screen.  Then I get a red stop sign in the middle of the screen.  The small wheel is still turing but the computer will not start.

Start your iMac with the original DVD that came with the computer then run disk utility on the hard drive to repair it, also repair your permissions.

    Hello,
My white McBook (2008 or 2009) recently stopped turning on.  When I hook up the Magsafe power adapter, the light shows green, but the computer will not turn on, or make a sound.  I've tried the re-boot option, but nothing works.  I first thought I needed a new battery because the lights at the back are all off, but shouldn't the computer turn on once the power adapter is hooked up and the light on the Magsafe adapter shows green?  I'm a computer doofus, so please be kind.  Please advise!  Thanks in advance.

There is no sound or attempt to boot
Sorry, your only alternative is to take it in for repair. While on your way stop at a office supply store and look into a UPS. if you don't want to go to the Apple Store you can use an AASP, you can locate one in your area by clicking AASP Locator.

Its been like this for awhile and I can not fix it

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitiion & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Permissions.
    Re-install if that doesn't work.

  • M-Audio Audiophile 2496 PCI card installed, now computer will not turn off

I installed Audiophile 2496 card + "live lite 4" software and now my computer will not turn off. It goes through the motions, but than just reboots. I have to hold the start button to kill it. I also have a Firmtek SATA PCI card and a USB 2.0 PCI card. Is there some way to solve this short of pulling the card?

    Hi-
Do you have the proper driver version installed?

  • After installing iTunes and iPod, my computer will not turn off

I am running Windows XP, and have just installed my new iPod nano and iTunes. Now my computer will not turn off. When I select "Turn off computer" in the start menu, the computer goes through the usual process of shutting down -- then it restarts automatically every time! Once it has started up again, it sends an Error report to windows -- but they are not coming forward with a solution for this problem. It appears as a problem created by an "Unknown device driver". I now have to turn my computer off by the wall. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Try running the Combo update first ... OS X Mountain Lion Update v10.8.4 (Combo), and once it is successfully downloaded, then try to download 10.8.5.
Sometimes the combo will correct any minor glitches in the system and also ensure all necessary updates to that point are included.
