CASE requires all THEN clauses to have same datatype class. And in your case first THEN returns a number while second a string. Wrap it into char and:
with t as (
           select  to_date('06/05/2013 09:56:00 AM','dd/mm/yyyy hh:mi:ss am') i,
                   to_date('07/05/2013 09:48:00 AM','dd/mm/yyyy hh:mi:ss am') o

select
      case
      when (floor(((o-i)*24*60*60)/3600)) > 9 then
      to_char(floor(((o-i)*24*60*60)/3600))
      else
      to_char(floor(((o-i)*24*60*60)/3600))
      End

But it is very inefficient way. It is not exactly clear what you are doing, but it looks like you want to get number of hours between dates. If so:

    Hi rhiesnand,
    right now you add 2 new rows to your array.
    The solution is to concatenate both row parts to one bigger 1D array before adding that array as new row to your 2D array!
    Like this:

  • Concatenate NUMBER and VARCHAR issue

    I'm trying to concatenate an integer and a string. However, the number that i'm trying to concatenate is the a number returned from the rank function and it's within the context of a CASE statement. I realize that sounds a bit confusing, so here's a psuedo example of what I'm trying to do:
    WITH temp_table AS
    SELECT 1 AS col1 FROM DUAL UNION ALL
    SELECT 2 FROM DUAL UNION ALL
    SELECT 3 FROM DUAL UNION ALL
    SELECT 3 FROM DUAL
    SELECT CASE WHEN COUNT(*) OVER (PARTITION BY col1) > 1
                THEN
                      RANK() OVER (ORDER BY col1) || 't'
                ELSE
                      RANK() OVER (ORDER BY col1)
           END AS test
    FROM   temp_table;
    Desired result set:
    TEST
    1
    2
    3t
    3tWhen I do the above, I get a "inconsistent datatypes: expected CHAR got NUMBER" exception. I tried converting the "RANK() OVER (ORDER BY col1) " to a string via the TO_CHAR function and CAST function, but neither worked. I did figure out how to successfully achieve my desired result by creating a subquery, converting the test column to a char, and than appending the 't' character to it in the outer SELECT; i was wondering if it was possible to do what I have requested in one query (without a subquery).

    Solomon Yakobson wrote:
    Right, but all you need is convert RANK to char which will be a bit more efficient:I thought on this but it i didnt appear that aesthetic to me.
    However why stop on hte half way?
    WITH temp_table AS
    SELECT 1 AS col1 FROM DUAL UNION ALL
    SELECT 2 FROM DUAL UNION ALL
    SELECT 3 FROM DUAL UNION ALL
    SELECT 3 FROM DUAL
    SELECT CASE WHEN COUNT(*) OVER (PARTITION BY col1) > 1
                THEN
                      to_char(RANK() OVER (ORDER BY col1)) || 't'
                ELSE
                      to_char(RANK() OVER (ORDER BY col1))
           END AS test
    FROM   temp_table;@OP it is about implicit type conversion, which should be avoided if possible.

    HI,
    In attachment file you will find the data before the saving operation in data file.
    We see in the file after the result. We have forgot all data after the decimal point, so we forgot a part of infortion that are very important in my application.
    Thanks in advance for your help

    not able to convert string attribute to number and date attribute. While using string to date conversion it shows result as failure.As I am reading from a text file. please help me out

    Hi,
    You need to provide an example value that's failing and the date formats in the reference data you're using. It's more than likely you don't have the correct format in your ref data.

  • String to number and Number to String Problem!

    Hi All,
    In my report i ahve to display the Date.
    From DB i am getting 4 digit string( 2008). Using that i have to display as 08 - 09
    In that i used RIGHT function. it is diplayed as 08 - 9.
    when i take 2 character from right '08' is coming. Then i converted to number and added 1 to the year
    But it become 9 instead of 09.
    How to solve it.
    Thanks in advance.
    Saravanakumar.

    Hi,
    Shweta's answer is valid when you retrieve a date field from the database, as you have specified that you are getting a four digit string, you should use this formula.
    if length(totext(tonumber(right('2008',2))+1)) = 4
    then
    right('2008',2)'-0'left(totext(tonumber(right('2008',2))+1),1)
    else
    right('2008',2)'-'left(totext(tonumber(right('2008',2))+1),2)
    hope this helps!!!
    Thanks

  • How to convert a String Variable to a Number and retain decimal place

    Hello!
    Here is my problem!
    I am receiving information from a source that I cannot control.  It is sending me Numbers in to form of strings.
    Ex: 12,200.49
    I have tried usingval() but only get " 12 " because it stops when it see a comma or period.
    I have also tried using Replace() to remove the comma and period, but then my number grows, because the last two digits are now part of the number and no longer behind a decimal point.
    Here is some example code
    <cfset Price = "12,200.49">
    <cfoutput>
    #val(Price)#
    <cfset Price = '#Replace(Price,",","","ALL")#'>
    <BR />
    #val(Price)#
    <cfset Price = '#Replace(Price,".","","ALL")#'>
    <BR />
    #val(Price)#
    <cfset Price = #NumberFormat(Price, "_____.__")#>
    <BR />
    FINISHED WITH #Price#
    </cfoutput>
    The output of the above code is this:
    12
    12200
    1220049
    FINISHED WITH 1220049.00
    So, you can see that 12,200.49 is now 1,220,049.00 because the two digits where added.
    What I would like to finish with is a String "12,200.49" that is now a Number like this $12,200.49
    Please help!!!

    HI
    try this
    <cfoutput>
        <cfset t="12,200.49">
        <cfset Price = Replace(t,",","","ALL")>
    #DollarFormat(Price )#
    </cfoutput>

  • Retreiving number and characters from string

    Hello fellow developers,
    Lets say i have the following string ER686 and want to split the string into a number and characterpart resulting in a String "ER" and an int "686". What is the best approach to accomplish this?
    Thank you for any help offered.

    The format is that there's a sequence of strings 2 or
    3 and a squence of numbers 3 or 4You might use a Pattern matcher, using a regular expression like the following :"(\\D{2,3})(\\d{3,4})"This expressions represents "two or three non-digit characters followed by 3 or 4 digits". The parenthesis are here to allow getting the two elements (groups) separately.
    Use the find() method of the matcher, then retrieve the two groups with group(1) and group(2).
    Eventually, parse the latter if required.

  • Compare and extract number from string

    Hi, all
    If I want to compare a requirement number and extract a number form a continuous data, . for example,
    the string like this ( ******** 123 ******
                                   *********456 ******
                                   *********789*******)
    and I have requiremnts that I need to extract the number is nearest greater 450, so in the above example, I need to pick 456.
    How can I result it?
    thanks

    Just extract all numbers into an array, then find the element with the smallest absolute difference. See attached (LabVIEW 7.0).
    EDIT: Sorry, If by "Nearest greater" you mean the next higher number, you can use something like in my example II. (Also LabVIEW 7.0).
    If you don't recognize an node, just right-click on it and select help.
    You still need to add proper execption handling, e.g.:
    What if no element is greater?
    What if there are multiple solutions?
    What if the string does not contain any numbers?

  • How to cast a parameter from ${bindings.myParam} which is Number to String

    I have a button which sets a param in request so I do sth like this in event on uix page:
    <set property="param_id" target="${requestScope}" value="${bindings.myParam.attributeValue} "/>
    but that myParam is Number (not String). And I have java.lang cast exception.
    What should I do to cast it?

    I'm sure there is a simpler way but i guess this works:
    <bean:define id="num" name="bindings" property="myParam.attributeValue" type="Number"/>
    <set property="param_id" target="${requestScope}" value="<%num.tostring()%>"/>This is not tested! One other thing to check is JSTL FMT formatNumber but i don't remember the syntax.

  • How does DIADEM import TDMS files? How gets every channel his number and groupindex? How can I determine which channel has which groupindex and number?

    I store different channels in a TDMS file.
    I like to have a time channel at the first position with group index 1 and number 1.
    When I read the TDMS file with DIADEM the time channel (Float64) is on a differernt position, and the channels are not sorted alphabetically.
    Here are my questions:
    How does DIADEM import TDMS files?
    How gets every channel his number and groupindex?
    How can I determine which channel has which groupindex and number?
    Best regards
    Joerg

    Hi Jörg,
    i suppose that you´re programme whose create the *.tdms file is writing on false position. Try to create datas with timechannel on first indes in diadem, then save it and then open it again. you see that all is correct. So please tell me what programm in what version do you use and please attache it here.
    Did you use the library for creating *.tdms files like in the link ?
    http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/6471
    Here you find the gtdms_8.x.zip - when you extract it and opened the *.llb you find vi´s for all functions e.g. writing 2d array of strings to *.tdms file
    when you open the subvi´s then you see how created and writing datas/structure to *.tdms files. Because *.tdms is binary you can´t see structure with open it in editor.
    When you don´t have Labview you can use the 30 days test of current version 8.5 under following link
    german version download link
    https://lumen.ni.com/nicif/d/lveval/content.xhtml
    english version download link

    Hope it helps

  • Run Report with Pass Number and Varchar Lexical Parameter values

    Dear Sir/Madam
    Due to an urgent change required to a report I would most appreciate it if you can please advise me if it is possible to get this report working by either passing in multiple lexical parameters or one signle lexical parameter when calling the SRW.RUN_REPORT command with the following methods:
    Firstly: When calling report with a run_no and spr_cd passed in through one lexical:
    cmd_line: REPORT=D:\DEV\REMITTANCE.rdf BACKGROUND=YES BATCH=NO DESFORMAT=PDF DESTYPE=FILE DESNAME=D:\DEV\REMITTANCE.pdf
    CP_L_PARAM=RUN_NO=TO_NUMBER(28) AND SPR_CD=SUPP1
    Both with a TO_NUMBER and without, whereby I attempt to do a SUBSTR within the query of the called report to derive the RUN_NO Oracle Reports fails to accept the SUBSTR.
    Secondly: I am now trying to call the with passing two lexical parameters into the report as follows:
    cmd_line: REPORT=D:\DEV\REMITTANCE.rdf BACKGROUND=YES BATCH=NO DESFORMAT=PDF DESTYPE=FILE DESNAME=D:\DEV\REMITTANCE.pdf
    CP_L_RUN_NO=||TO_CHAR(lv_run_no)|| CP_L_SPR_CD=||lv_spr_cd;
    NOTE: The above is an output of the actual command line and not what is passed into the command line, thus the quotes are missing. Please also note that the report is running fine with the only a hard coded RUN_NO value PASSED without the SPR_CD.
    Unfortunately this is also causing issues as the RUN_NO is a number and as you know you can only pass in strings.
    Your urgent help is required on this matter please as our client is expecting a solution this afternoon.
    Hope to hear form you soon.
    Kind regards
    Andrew Mason

    Dont Worry I've worked it out...

  • How can I create a random number and letter in a text field...

    Hi All,
    I am using application express. I want to get a random number and letter for a text field but not sure how to do this. Say I have a licence form and I want to get the licence number automatically when user wants to create a new licence and it needs to be unique. The format I am looking for is - HQ2631 something like this.
    I am thinking I have to create a trigger but not sure how to go about this....
    advanced thanks,
    Tajuddin

    Something to play with:
    Your method can generate 26 * 26 * 10000 different licence_ids
    Generating one million ids takes 20 seconds but produces between 70000 and 80000 duplicates and is rapidly getting worse (if that is something over 7%, doubling the ids generated that grows to something under 30%)
    Just see if you can live with that.
    select sum(collisions) all_duplicates,count(*) distinct_duplicates,max(collisions) max_multiple
      from (select licence_id,count(*) - 1 collisions
              from (select DBMS_RANDOM.STRING('',2) || trunc(DBMS_RANDOM.VALUE(1000,9999)) licence_id
                      from dual
                     connect by level <= :to_generate
             group by licence_id
             having count(*) > 1
           )Regards
