Configuring D20 with 2 SSD drives in Raid 0, only a single drive shows up

I had this machine for several years configured with a single 128gb SSD and I decided to put in a pair of Samsung 256GB SSD drives that I had around and I planned on configuring them as Raid 0.  I have plugged them into the blue sata ports on the motherboard and no matter what combination I use it only ever sees one of the drives.  The other device doesn't show up in the Marvell raid utility or in the Bios.  I have updated the bios to the latest and still am not having any luck.  Any feedback is appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Matt

I saw this issue also come across my email this week.  We're looking into it here.  It would be helpful to know what specific SSDs you're trying to user (i.e. the model numbers of the samsung 256GB drives) as well as what level FW your Marvell controller is at.  You should see the firmware listed as the system boots and loads the Marvell OPROM during POST.
We've seen situations in the past where you plug two drives in the system, but it only recognizes one (but you can plug each drive in individually and it will be recognized correctly).  Generally this had to do with information in the ID string for the drive.  Either the drive wasn't programmed with unique IDs, or the Marvell FW isn't reading the string correctly and is missing the unique part of the string.  The controller uses that string to uniquely identify each drive.
I'll update this later once we make some progress on it.

Have a LaCie external 2big RAID drive; two 1T drives in RAID 0 configuration (striped).  Drive works perfectly as one big 2T external disk but Mac Installer (Lion - App Store download & Snow Leopard DVD) refuse to install OS X Lion or OS X Snow Leopard on RAID drive.
Previous RAID - two 500g's in RAID 0 had SnowLeopard/Lion installed and worked just fine as bootable drive.
    Help!

Keep in mind a RAID 1 only protects you from hardware failure of one of the drives. It does not protect you if the hardware raid/chip set decides to take a vacation. Also, if FCP corrupts a file, it is written as corrupt to both drives.
I'm a big fan of separate but equal. Two drives. One goes to the site, the other remains at the hotel. At night, you back up the site disk to the the hotel disk. If something happens to the computer and the disk at the site the next day, you at least have the material back at the hotel.
eggs. baskets. that sort of thing.
    good luck.

On my iPad, I'm trying to open a PDF from Safari with iBooks, but when I choose "Open with ..." in Safari, only Pages and Dropbox show as options.  I'm running iOS 7.1.2 and iBooks 3.2.  I have rebooted the iPad and that did not help, and reinstalled iBooks, which also changed nothing.  Thanks for any ideas!

Yup, it was uploaded to our school Wiki as a PDF, and Pages did open it.  I was then able to move it to iBooks, but I'd rather avoid the extra steps.

  • PP Crashing when opening collected project from a RAID system on a single drive system

    Hello,
I have a very serious problem with Premiere Pro. I've created a project in Premiere Pro CC on a Windows 7 system, utilizing a RAID system.
Today I collected the project from that machine to an external HDD in order to transfer the project to my computer, running Premiere Pro CC 2014 on Windows 8.1 - no RAID configuration, just a single HDD. After converting the project to CC 2014, Premiere Pro crashes and has to close.
I believe there's a bug/problem/issue with transferring RAID projects to non-RAID machines in general, since a collaborator of mine had the exact same problem with the exact same project file (and a bunch of other project files that essentially were previous versions of the project file I have a problem with).
Is there any explanation to this? And probably any fix?
    Thanks!

What could be in my project that makes it unable to open?

  • Making two hard drives work or appear as a single drive

I have a G5 with two 500 GB internal drives. One I use to backup the first, however, now my drives are full and I would like to buy 1 TB external to back up the two internal drives but is there anyway to setup the second internal drive to work with the first like a single 1 TB drive instead of two 500GB drives? I'm not sure how I would use the second drive otherwise. I don't want to have to drag files to it every time I want to save something on it. How should I set it up? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for your help. I will have to research it a bit. I'm not 100% sure what a rAID is or how it works and with regard to the second comment on using the 500 GB as super duper backup...you may have misunderstood or maybe I wasn't clear. I won't have a 500 GB to use as any backup. I want my two internal 500 GB drives to be viewed as a single 1TB drive that can be backed up to a 1TB external drive. I just don't understand how to make my 2 500GB drives into one drive. I prefer not to split it up into application on one of the drives and user info on the other because I won't get the max space out of both. I have tons of photos, music, and video on my machine and little in the way of programs. Will a RAID make the two 500GB drives into a single drive?

  • D20 with Win7(Finnish) + Marvell Raid Utility: Cannot log in as administrator

This is not really just "Lenovo problem", but more like Marvell-issue. But hoping that someone here would have encountered this similar problem.
    using: 2x 500GT (Ide-)HD as RAID1, Win7 professional (Finnish version).
Marvell Raid Utility (MRU) uses win7's user database to check out which user has the right to adjust raid-stuff. The MRU is a web-browser -based. My problem is, that I cannot log into MRU with admiministrator rights.
    Tried so far:
    - My "user name" has all the rights it should
    - Checked out that my name is listed in the administrator group
    - Made a new user named: Administrator with admin rights
    - Cannot launch MRU with "Run as administrator" (it is just a link-icon to a "web-page" : localhost://, etc)
    - Tried to use different browsers as "run as administrator" (exploder, firefox, chrome)
    - Tried to run diff.browsers as normally
    - Tried to log into the mru with different usernames (with administrator rights)
    - Tried to install MRU using "run as administrator" hoping that the rights would "transfer" to the installed program
MRU always logs me in as "Guest". It shows that there is two physical discs and a virtual disk has been created. But I can't to anything with the two disks, cannot format them, cannot make anything - windows doesn't even understand the disks - it finds them allright (with: Devices -> diskdrives(?) -> marvell raid VD 0 SCSI Disk Device : Drives (Refresh) // Type: Unknown, State/Status: Unformatted, Type: Not usable, size: 476860MB...)
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

you can access the marvell BIOS at POST by pressing ctrl+M.   this will allow you to set up RAID manually.

  • How do I use WD Raptor for OS/Apps drive and RAID 0 for Home/Data drive

So far I have configured my machine with a WD Raptor 74GB as the startup disk, and created a RAID 0 with the Seagate 250 GB drive (shipped with the machine) and a 250GB partion of a WDC 320GB drive. All drives were zeroed and I used the install disks to load Tiger on the Raptor. I backed up to a LaCie D2 1TB external hard drive with LaCie's Silverkeeeper.
I would like to use the WD Raptor as startup/apps/scratch disk and the RAID 0 for the user folders and other data. I would then like to create a RAID 1 with the RAID 0 and a 500GB partion of the LaCie 1TB external.
I have learned however that what I would like and what I can have are not always compatible.
    My questions:
Is the Silverkeeper backup sufficent, or should I have cloned my previous system?
What folders should accompany the application folder on the Raptor? So far I have only put the app folder there and nothing works. I suspect things like 'application support' should be there as well.
Is there a way to keep my home folder on the RAID 0 without using Terminal or spending too much time as the root user? I tried copying my home folder onto to the RAID 0 and putting an alias in the user account I had to create while installing the OS on the Raptor. This kind of works but is not a particularly elegant solution.
I would appreciate any advice on how to proceed or if the proposed configuration is even achievable.

Photoshop files of 1GB+ can eat up memory and scratch. And the more drives for scratch, the better.
Some of the limitations are with the bus, bandwidth, and 'swapping' code in and out of different cores that is inefficient.
Compilers can do some, but from the time new hardware (8 cores) to seeing improvements to compiler, and out to software (applications) and OS, can take a year or more but provide in the neighborhood sometimes of 40%. In which time, newer designs will change the equation. Caching and VM will improve with Leopard, but beyond that...?
So... back to "read world" IF you are in the habit of working with 1-2GB images, then a pair of Raptors for boot is helpful, AND 8GB and more of RAM, AND 4-8 drives for scratch. (Think of those Sonnet Port Multiplier controllers and Fusion 500 style case for 5 drives on one port).
If you work with files smaller than 500MB range, your needs are cut way down.
150GB Raptor boot drive. Small. subtract 25% for minimum free space, 140GB formatted, kind of tight for some. But it handles 60% well.
The outer 30% of 465GB (RE2) is also fast and good performance. I partition large boot drives to keep the OS and apps contained in the outer 1/3.
Mac Pro Memory Usage and Performance
If your work flow means doing more than one thing at a time on your Mac Pro, then you will see significant gains if you spend extra to get the 8-core version. Our Photoshop CS3 actions were completed 39% faster on the 8-core when we had 3 other apps busy crunching. This advantage emerges in spite of the memory bus limitations of the 8-core Mac Pro.

  • Windows 8.1 user with multiple external drives. Lightroom CC 2015 freezes on import. Need to have Lightroom recognize only a single drive.

I see that Adobe still hasn't fixed this issue where Lightroom freezes up during import when a system has multiple external drives attached. Disappointing.
A friend suggested that I configure Lightroom to only recognize the single external drive where I save my RAW files. I haven't been able to find out where in Lightroom's settings to do this.
Currently the only folders I have in Lightroom are my local C disk and my external drive with the RAW files, (K), where I do all my editing.
Can anyone offer advice on how I can either do what my friend suggested or find another way of dealing with/solving this issue? Currently Lightroom is almost unusable for me since I cannot add new files on my K drive to develop.
    Thanks.

I save edited images from Photoshop into a new folder on the same hard drive my catalog is on, then attempt to import, or to right-click on the edited image and choose Open in Lightroom. Lightroom hangs in either situation.

  • When I try to update my youtube app, I'm asked to sign in with my Apple ID. The only problem is, it shows my sons Email instead of mine! When I go to settings my email is still there. How can I change the email when it asks me to put MY password in?

When I try to update my youtube app, I'm asked to sign in with my apple password but the email it shows is my sons! In my settings it still shows my email. Nowhere in my settings on my Ipod or if I sign in to Apple with my computer does it show his email. Can anyone help???

    - Apps are locked to the account that purchased them. Thus it appears that yor sone purchased the app.
    - To update apps you have to sign into the account that purchased the apps. If you have apps that need updating purchased from more than one account you have to update them one at a time until the remaining apps were purchased from one account.

  • How do you move just your movies and tv shows to an external hard drive and have iTunes recognize that that is where that media is (keeping music on the internal hard drive itself and putting only movies and tv shows on an external hard drive)?

I'm not sure about how to get iTunes to recognize that my music is in one location (on my MacBook's internal hard drive) and my movies and tv shows are in another (on an external hard drive I purchased).  I know how to make iTunes recognize that all of my iTunes files are on an external hard drive, but not only some of them.  Please help me out.  Thanks.

While you can do that, it is not a feature of iTunes.  Put your movies on the external drive, then add them to iTunes by dragging the files to iTunes while holding the option (alt) key down so it leaves the files where they are located.  There are other ways to move them if they are already added but they can be more involved and tricky.  If it's just one or two try:  http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=relocateselected

  • Two Drive Raid 0 vs.  Two Drives for Media

I understand that for scratch disks you want the fastest and largest drive, so raid 0 would probably be great for a scratch disc.
How about two media disks at 7200rpm rather than raid 0 of the same two drives?  Two things to consider reliability and speed.   The idea is to duplicate the footage to both drives and import both as separate bins into premiere and on the timeline go back and forth between the two drive to not stress a single drive.  Is this a good possibility or better to put them into raid 0.
    Lets look at these possibilities:
    1.     2 sata drives in raid 0 (for media, including audio/music and  animations/motion graphics)
    2.     2 sata drives in raid 0,  and a 3rd drive for audio and motion graphics.
    3.     2 sata drives for media (no raid), a  3rd for audio and motion graphics

The idea is to duplicate the footage to both drives and import both as separate bins into premiere and on the timeline go back and forth between the two drive to not stress a single drive.  Is this a good possibility or better to put them into raid 0.
Using disks individually is half the performance at double the headache (of managing the media spread over two drive letters), with one possible benefit of a lesser chance of a full data loss. I'd vouch for RAID0 as long as there is a copy of the source files somewhere else.

  • K8tNEOFSR SINGLE DRIVE AND NO STUPID RAID?!!!!

Hi, I have 1 sata wd 160 gb drive on my pc (k8t neo FSR+ am 64+3000+1gig Kingston+RADEON9800PRO ) connected to the VIA VT8237 serial ata ( not promise, I don’t have that)  everything works fine, the problem is that I cant disable RAID,. I want to use only one single drive as fast as I can.
but the RAID bios always appears on the screen when booting slowing things downn
( pressing F10 doesn’t help because I don’t have other drive) then windows starts loading.
How can I disable raid and keep one single sata drive functioning ? pata ( cd drive) and sata is enabled on bios                                                                                   One of the readme files mentions that there are 2 type of  sata bios, one with raid and the other without  it  (6420NXXX.ROM)  how can I install the new sata bios? Anybody knows  a solution?
    Thanks
    Sorry for the lousy English

    Hi
The screen you are seeing appears to be the VIA SATA drives screen, aslong as SATA are connected and enabled you will see this. It is setting up your satas,
CH_0 is the drive on SATA1, CH_1 is the SATA2 connector. Ignore the raid, it is a controller for the sata drive.
    cheers

  • Raid 0 vs Single Drive

I have a Lumix GH4 and I'm starting to edit in 4k.  I need a new thunderbolt drive and was wondering if Raid 0 is faster than a single drive.  A LaCie 6T Big2 Raid vs LaCie D2 single drive. Both are the same price.

I'm VERY shy in any prediction and any 'number values' according that magic idol 'speed' ..
No, I don't link to my 4k-4x Multicam-on-a-Mini-stunt again , but in my humble opinion and observation, plain 'numbers' don't mirror the performances of FCPX! What I said before: any not-too-stuffed usb3 drive is more than fast enough to deliver a 4k-native-stream. The question is: is FCPX to display that stream? With all the bells&wistles related to it, waveforms, thumbnails, perhaps applied effects etc etc etc.
And, don't get tired to repeat that: What if the project contains multiple video-streams, compos (green screen, pip, ...), compounds, Multicam?
Then, the transfer-rate from one metal-box to the other is just one (weak) criteria.
I've read somewhere (sorry no link at hand), you'll notice a dramatic decline of performance, if a drive is close-to-full  - which makes sense, when you visualize how data is handled on a spinning platter... (2015, and we rely on technique from turntables...). Or, imagine some 'super-fast' Pegasus - and just 2 tiny booms have to dance across the spinning driks, collecting bits for say 6 streams of video..
    (pic source: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6677545.stm )
And I've read somewhere (should be fcp.co), that FCPX and Compressor do handle videos differently on task of 'conversion' ..
And there are many folks, who keep their Macs very busy, by indexing HDDs, loading updates, sharing to clouds, listening to streamed musuc etc etc etc.. then, more Ram = more better!
    ... summary:
drive-speed is a topic; but by far not the only one to create a 'snappy' FCPX experience!

  • MacPro RAID Card - working with SSDs in 2nd optical bay?

I am planning to get a MP wit the Apple RAID card in order to configure 4 internal HDs as a RAID5. Does anyone have experience whether this setup would be compatible with one (or two) additional SSDs (boot drive) which will be connected via the 2nd optical bay.
Does this work at all - I understand the RAID card changes from SATA to SAS ports. I am not interested to include the SSDs in the RAID setup but would like to know whether this would work at all or whether I should better plan without the RAID card.
    Thanks
