Configuring maximum protection mode in dataguard with oracle 10g

Dear All,
I am facing a big problem in my configuration for oracle dataguard in maximum protection mode. as per oracle documentation i have done the following.
on the primary database i configured the floowing parameter.
LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_2='SERVICE=CDER LGWR SYNC AFFIRM
VALID_FOR=(ONLINE_LOGFILES,PRIMARY_ROLE)
DB_UNIQUE_NAME=CDER'
on the standby i configured the following parameters.
LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_2='SERVICE=REDC LGWR SYNC AFFIRM
VALID_FOR=(ONLINE_LOGFILES,PRIMARY_ROLE)
DB_UNIQUE_NAME=REDC'
i created standby redo logs on the standby database as per documentation.
I shut down the primary database and started it in mount stage and i executed the following commands.
SQL> ALTER DATABASE SET STANDBY DATABASE TO MAXIMIZE PROTECTION
after database was sucessfully alterd, i execute it the following command to open the database.
SQL > ALTER DATABASE OPEN;
what is happening is that i am recieving the Error end of communication channel and also after i look at the log file the following error is in place
Thu Jul 22 23:33:37 2010
Errors in file c:\oracle\product\10.2.0\admin\redc\bdump\redc_psp0_1088.trc:
ORA-16072: a minimum of one standby database destination is required
though when i reset the dataguard to maximize performance it work really successful and the database open;
please guys guide me through this

you got it

  • 9i Dataguard Problem in MAXIMUM PROTECTION mode

    Dear All
    Hi
    I have 9i Rel 2 (9.2.07) dataguard environment on Linux Redhat Advanced Server 3
    The Pretenction mode is Maximum Protection
    One day I noticed that my dataguard Database is about 100 log files before than the Primary:
    On priamry the current log sequence# was 7804
    But in standby the last log that was transfered and applied was 7716
    In primary I executed the following select:
    SQL> Select protection_mode , protection_level from v$database;
    the result was:
    protection_mode=MAXIMUM PROTECTION
    protection_level=SYNCHRONIZING
    What I want to know is:
    Why the primary database did not become shutdown when it is in MAXIMUM PROTECTION mode and why it has continued working when the log files could not transfer to standby database ????
    Thank you in advance for your reply

    Anybody any idea ??????

    if i open primary db in maximum availability mode its working fine ..
    the problme is only with maximum protection mode
    plz tell me what is wrong with my configuration

    hi thanx again,
    i read both the oracle links u suggest me in your previous post ,but i have not found any thing like,min 2 standby database require for maximum protection mode,
    in first link :-
    5.6.1.1 Maximum Protection Mode
    This protection mode ensures that no data loss will occur if the primary database fails. To provide this level of protection, the redo data needed to recover each transaction must be written to both the local online redo log and to the standby redo log on at least one standby database before the transaction commits_. To ensure data loss cannot occur, the primary database shuts down if a fault prevents it from writing its redo stream to at least one remote standby redo log. For multiple-instance RAC databases, Data Guard shuts down the primary database if it is unable to write the redo records to at least one properly configured database instance. The maximum protection mode requires that at least one standby instance has a standby redo log and the LGWR, SYNC, andAFFIRM attributes be used on the LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_n parameter for this destination.
    and second link:-
    Maximum protection This protection mode ensures that no data loss will occur if the primary database fails. To provide this level of protection, the redo data needed to recover each transaction must be written to both the local online redo log and to the standby redo log on at least one standby database before the transaction commits_. To ensure data loss cannot occur, the primary database shuts down if a fault prevents it from writing its redo stream to the standby redo log of at least one transactionally consistent standby database.
    Plz correct me if i m wrong
    thanx in advance

  • Multiplexing Redo Log and maximum protection mode.

    Assume that during writing into redo logs the instance crashes. As a result, members of active redo group are not synchronized, some of them had more data. How Oracle will handle this when instance starts? And there can be case when at startup time some members that had more redo before crash, are lost.
    Now assume that we have standby database with maximum protection mode. After LGWR has written to local redo logs and before writing to standby redo logs, primary instance crashes. In this case standby site lost last transaction.
    Is it correct? Thanks.

    Assume that during writing into redo logs the instance crashes. As a result, members of active redo group are not synchronized, some of them had more data. How Oracle will handle this when instance starts? And there can be case when at startup time some members that had more redo before crash, are lost.
    Members of a particular group are written concurrently by LGWR, all members of a log group will have same data.  If any member of a particular group is lost or not reachable, oracle will read from the available log member during instance recovery.

    To answer your second question,In this mode no transaction commits on primary unless the redo is also written on atleast one standby database, otherwise primary will go down.

  • Database shutdowns in Maximum Protection mode

    Hi,
    I am using oracle dataguard 11g(11.2.0.1.0) on OEL5. My dataguard is working fine in MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE mode. But when i try to put my database mode in MAXIMUM PROTECTION MODE my database gets shutdown.What could be the possible reason for this????
    Regards,

    Hello;
    Quote  "To ensure that data loss cannot occur, the primary database will shut down, rather than continue processing transactions, if it cannot write its redo stream to at least one synchronized standby database"
    Section - 1.4 Data Guard Protection Modes - Data Guard Concepts and Administration 11g Release 2 (11.2) E10700-02
    From section 5.1 of the same document ( Maximum Protection )
    "Oracle recommends that a minimum of two standby databases be used to
    protect a primary database that runs in maximum protection mode to prevent a single
    standby database failure from causing the primary database to shut down."

  • Symantec Antivirus with Oracle 10g

    Hi,
    I have successfully installed Oracle 10g personal database and developer suite in windows xp with 512 MB RAM and 2.66 Ghz processor.
    The problem is that when I start my PC, it takes 2 min. to boot completely and the Symantec antivirus can not be enabled for a longer time (more than 10 min.)
    Please tell me about the solution or any configuration settings.
    Thanks & regards

    Thanks Justin Thats right ...
    Problem elaboration is as follows
    We currently have an application which requires oracle 10g(10.2.0.3) client to connect to database from user desktops. As
    part of new application development the oracle 11g clients need to be installed on all the user deskotps.
    The complete application software along with oracle client 11g has to be roled out on these desktop as part of
    implementaion of new application besides the existing application(The application software is packaged along with oracle
    10g client).
    We would like to understand if there is any software provided by oracle using which we can switch between different oracle
    versions while accessing the respective applications simultaneously. Also are there any known bugs/issues in running
    oracle 10g client and oracle 11g client together on the same user desktops with different oracle homes?

  • What is the maximum number of characters in an Oracle 10G Instance Name

    All,
    Can I know what is the maximum number of characters in an oracle 10g instance name under AIX? Is it 7 characters or 8 characters?
    regards

    One should really make the difference between db_name and instance_name: if instance_name default value is db_name it can be different
    (even on a non RAC database).
    For example with Oracle 10.2.0.4 you can create a database named DB78 with instance_name=DB12345678:
    $ uname -a
    Linux lx01.localdomain 2.6.18-92.el5 #1 SMP Fri May 23 22:17:30 EDT 2008 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

    oracle    6412  5596  0 20:37 pts/1    00:00:00 grep smon
    $ export ORACLE_SID=DB12345678
    $ sqlplus / as sysdba

    NAME                                 TYPE        VALUE
    db_file_name_convert                 string
    db_name                              string      DB78
    db_unique_name                       string      DB78
    global_names                         boolean     FALSE

    lock_name_space                      string

    service_names                        string      DB78I would not recommend this practice: but it's interesting to know to avoid confusing between db_name and instance_name.

  • Sqlj runtime error with oracle 10G in Websphere6 or 5.1

    We are trying to migrate from oracle 9i to 10G and we are compiled all our sqlj code with codegen = -oracle option.(previously we used to use codegen=-jdbc which for some reason doesnot work).it compiles fine with out any erros.. But when we try to run then get this exception.

    Hope any one can give any pointers.

    I'm having same issue - but I'm having it when I try to invoke a method that contains a database Object type from a Tibco Business Works Process called a Java Method.
    How exactly do you do the codegen=iso configuration?
    I've tried:
    1. Project Properties / Compiler SQLJ and then select from Code Generation drop down iso.
    2. From Connections / Database / Navigate to package / right-click / Generate Java / Browse to my custom jpub.properties file where I have tried multiple entries such as (by themselves and in some combination.:
    - jpub.codegen=jdbc
    - jpub.codegen=iso
    - jpub.compatible=9i
    - jpub.compatible=8i
    - compatible=both8i
    - jpub.usertypes=oracle
    - jpub.compatible=customdatum
    - jpub.compatible=sqlj
    I've also played with changing from the default some of the Mapping Options in Connections / Database / Navigate to package / right-click / Generate Java / Mapping Options.
    This doc here, says that code should change (section 6 JPublisher Input Files - based on configuration of Input files)
    Oracle® Database
    JPublisher User's Guide
    10g Release 2 (10.2)
    B14188-01
    No matter what I do, the code that gets generate is the same.
    Also, the documentation talks about running things from the command line but how exactly do you do that? Do I need to be in specific directory? I tried the c:\ C:\jdev\system and c\jdev\ and c:jdev\bin and always get error message: 'jpub' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
    I've built a java client in JDeveloper to successfully call the same method and I don't see the error.

  • CCX7.0 Database Integration with Oracle 10g through ODBC

    Good Day…
    We are up to integrate CCX7.0 with Oracle 10g, CCX7.0 documents show the way to integrate the CCX7.0 with SQL server, but mention nothing about Oracle 10g, anyway...
    I tried to check the ODBC options, there were many options, I tried to select any Oracle related choice, just to find out Oracle should supply the driver for it. In the forums, people say it’s an Oracle Client, but what will this client do? Am I going to connect though it to the oracle database server or is it going to query the database to my CCX server? What am I going to use in this case, user DSN or system DSN?
    If there any tips or recommendations I will be grateful, as it is my first database integration.
    Thanks
    AT

    Hi Aaron
    Thanks Aaron for the information, and yes you are right, I am not a database person.
    I have here some questions, sorry if some of them sounds silly
    1)       Is there a certain Oracle Client version? or and Oracle Client will work for me?
    2)       Do you recommend system DSN on user DSN?
    3)       “…. available to any device on the system” as you said in your reply, what do you mean by "device" and "system"? Sorry, but this will help to clear the picture to me
    4)       What will this Oracle Client exactly do? Is it going to build an SQL table on my CCX server that query the information from the Oracle Server?
    5)       My customer has already implemented database integration with IPCC3.5, how can I check the current configuration of the Oracle Client, and what things else should I check before proceeding with the integration?
    The reason I want to understand this because there is a lot of database integration is requested from us, the CCX scripts can be used to query data from SQL tables, I read a lot about this –waiting for the implementation phase- the lucky me, the first integration I faces is with Oracle.
    Anyway, who said learning is easy.
    Thanks Aaron for your time, waiting your answers.

  • How to connect Forms 6i & Reports 6i with oracle 10g R2?

    Hey everybody,
    I need your help in connecting both Forms 6i & Reports 6i with Oracle 10g Release 2 db, MS Access(2003, 2007) and SQL database(Microsoft Visual Studio 2008). I am a newbie. I have installed all of them on my HP notebook, with Windows 7 Ultimate(32 bit OS) installed. I want to generate forms & reports by accessing data from above mentioned databases. Please provide me with the configuration steps.
    Thanks in advance...!

    Welcome to the forum ;-)
    Please be sure to review the following:
    http://blogs.oracle.com/shay/entry/10_commandments_for_the_otn_fo
    First, I think it would be a good idea if we can understand why you have chosen to use a nearly new operating system yet install Oracle products that are 10 years old (i.e. Forms/Reports 6i) on it. In general, this is not a good idea. Although running such an old version on Win7 can be made to work, the possibility of having problems is likely. If you are infact new to the product, using a configuration where you are likely to have problems may not be a good starting place. Also, you should be aware that Forms/Reports 6i was desupported several years ago. Documentation and other information is gradually being replaced by newer information, so resources for this old version are going away. The latest version of Forms/Reports is part of Fusion Middleware 11R2 (version 11.1.2.0) and requires WebLogic Server 10.3.5 (or 10.3.6) in order to be installed.
    Second, if you decide to stick with F/R 6i, are you planning to run the applications you create in a browser or as a client/server application? This information is important because how you connect to a database will slightly differ depending on which option you choose. Also, if you want to connect to non-Oracle data sources you can use ODBC for client/server or Oracle Transparent Gateway. However, if you plan to deploy the applications using a browser, Gateway is your only option for connecting to non-Oracle datasources. As for connecting to MS Access, I believe ODBC is your only option, so web deployment may not be an option.
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/gateways.102/b14270/ch1.htm
    There are many other references available. Try a Google search.
    As for connecting to an Oracle database, this is generally easy. For the Builder(s) and client/server runtime to connect, add the db information to the tnsnames.ora found in the Oracle Home (installation directory) \network\admin. If you are unfamiliar with what goes in the file you can copy the entries created for your database. The db will have a similar file found in a similar place in its installation directory (Oracle Home). For example, you might find something like this:
    ORCL =
    (DESCRIPTION =
        (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = YOURSERVER.COM)(PORT = 1521))
        (CONNECT_DATA =

  • IAS 65. with Oracle 10g

    Hi,
    Are there any known issues when running iAS 6.5 with Oracle 10g?
    Thanks!

    It has been more than a year since iAS6.5 has been EOLd. I do not think iAS 6.5 has been tested with Oracle 10g. But having said that, I don't think there should be any problems if you use the proper driver and do not use any new features introduced in 10g. There is also a possibility that this will not be a supported configuration if you see any issues.
    I would also like to mention that you should start planning your migration to Sun Java Application Server 8.x as soon as possible.
    Good Luck

    I want to use Golden Gate to connect MS SQL Server 2005 with Oracle 10g database. So, i have installed both databases on different pc's on windows platform. MS SQL Server 2005 on windows XP and Oracle 10g on windows 2003.
    I have configure Golden Gate step by step by following oracle guideline:
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/articles/datawarehouse/oracle-sqlserver-goldengate-460262.html
    When i run following command on target (oracle 10g):
    replicat paramfile dirprm/inload.prm
    I encounterd following error:

  • Tomcat 5.5 DBCP with Oracle 10g

    Hi,
    I am using Tomcat 5.5 for making connection pool with Oracle 10g. My configurations in tomcat server.xml file is
    <Resource name="jdbc/csms" auth="Container" type="javax.sql.DataSource"
    maxActive="10" maxIdle="1" maxWait="5000"
    removeAbandoned="true" removeAbandonedTimeout="60" logAbandoned="true"
    username="***********" password="**********" driverClassName="oracle.jdbc.OracleDriver"
    url="jdbc:oracle:thin:@*************:prtp"/>
    I am getting connections properly and process is also closing connections. I have 2 queries when I am not closing connections in my process.
    1. When I am not closing connections in my process, after maxActive size, why I am not getting extra connection from maxIdle (as I have defined it 1. I am expecting 1 extra connection from pool).
    2. When process is using all maxActive connections, can I create extra physical connections, by using datasource. In current configuration, I am not able to create extra connection. I am getting exception Pool Exhausted. Is my configuration correct.
    Thanks in advance for reply.

    once you get all the connections your pool defines that's it.
    Either reconfigure your pool or live with it.
