Configuring Oracle ASM 11gR2 to use ASMM

Hello,
Kernel hugepages under Oracle Linux is incompatible with Oracle AMM. The Oracle ASM instance under 11g uses AMM by default. So in order to configure Oracle ASM to use ASMM, what are the recommended settings please?
I reviewed http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E18283_01/server.112/e16102/asminst.htm#CHDBBIBF which outlines some information about various pool size parameters required for ASMM, depending on the size of the datafiles that will used.
But what about typical ASMM parametes like sga_target and pga_aggregate_target, or are these not used in an ASM instance?
How have you configred ASMM for Oracle ASM 11gR2?
Thanks!

The minimum MEMORY_TARGET requirment for Oracle ASM is 256 MB. which we have set in ASM.
But what about typical ASMM parametes like sga_target and pga_aggregate_target, or are these not used in an ASM instance? yes ,they will be used ,below snap from aix 6.1 OS

  • How to Install Oracle ASM 11gR2 In Oracle Linux 6.5

    Hi
I want to install oracle ASM in oracle linux 6.5 .
Can any one helps me to find a paper with above subject?
    Thanks

Theses steps only if You want to use ISCSI. This is fine to get the howto:
If You ar running in VM Ware Boxes:
Add the following to the *.vmx file for the virtual machine:
    disk.EnableUUID = "TRUE"
Restart the vm machine and the /dev/disk/by-id/scsi**** should be visible.
That's a nasty one - without this ISCSI just doesn't work
    chkconfig iscsi on
    iscsiadm -m discovery -t st -p 192.168.146.100
    iscsiadm -m node -T iqn.1991-05.com.microsoft:iscsi-asm-target   -p 192.168.146.100 -l
192.168.146.100 <=== IP Number of ISCSI Host
iqn.1991-05.com.microsoft:iscsi-asm-target <== Name of ISCSI Server, you get this as output from discovery command
Now, you must make sure that the devices belong to oracle.
Take a look at this link:
    http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/linux/udev-scsi-rules-configuration-in-oracle-linux-5-and-6.php#make_scsi_devices_trusted
Add the following to the "/etc/scsi_id.config" file to configure SCSI devices as trusted. Create the file if it doesn't already exist.
    options=-g
    /sbin/scsi_id -g -u -s /block/sdc <== for all ISCSI devives
    vi /etc/udev/rules.d/99-oracle-asmdevices.rules

    Reload:
    /sbin/udevcontrol reload_rules
    /sbin/start_udev
Now you have your devices read, belonging to oracle:
    ls -al /dev/asm*
Next go to oracle download click on list all and get:
Oracle Grid Infrastructure 11g Release 2 (11.2.0.1.0) for Linux x86-64
After extracting this you are ready to go.
When starting the install process you get an option to "change path", here select /dev.
In my test systems I use to set "external" for dataprotection.

  • Configuring Oracle 9i AS to use Java 1.4

    Hi All,
Please help me in configuring Oracle 9i Application Server Release 2 to use Java 1.4 Version instead of 1.3 version.

    Hi,
    Existing settings
I checked in catalina.bat the entry was
echo Using JAVA_HOME:       %JAVA_HOME%When I checked in environment variables for JAVA_HOME the value was
C:\j2sdk1.4.2_08Also there is an environment variable
    JRE_HOME with value C:\j2sdk1.4.2_08\jrePlease suggest.

  • Configuring oracle management server 9i using create new repository option

    hi ,
i am trying to install oracle management server using the the option "create new repository "on a system on which oracle database is already installed .after installing oracle management server "configuration assistant appears .the second option is to select a database repository .
first of all can i select the database that was prevouisly installed on my system
or do i need to create a new database before installing oracle management server. but as i did not install any database for oracle management server before i am trying to select the database that was previuosly installed on the system but i gave me a tns error that it could not resolve the service name .after that i noticed that the oms listerner was up and registered . i am trying to stop this listener and start the database listerner so that it may not give me this error.can some one help me out configuring oracle management server on a system creating a new repository

I suggest you to create a different database for the OMS repository. This database can be used for other tools that may require a repository, such as recovery manager.
On the connectivity issue, I suggest you to verify your listener is up and running and it doesn't need to have the instance registered, as of course, it is a new instance. Make sure it is started. For additional troubleshooting on the connectivity issue, you may post the specific tns-12XXX error message displayed.

  • Configuring Oracle Application Server to use a user friendly url

    Hi All,
I am having trouble configuring the apache httpd.conf file within an applicaton server to be able to use user-friendly urls for the infrastructure identity management tools server. I also need this for security reasons as well as hardware reasons - loadbalancing.
At the moment I have a standard setup, whereby the sso application server is using port 7777. I would like the user not to enter the port, but to enter just a standard url, like http://login.<company>.com.au, so that if the user needs to modify oid using the oiddas web application, they can enter something like http://login.<company>.com.au/oiddas/ rather than http://<machine host name>:7777/oiddas/. This would also be used by portal for sso logins.
From the standard installation, Apache was configured as follows:
    Port 7777
    Listen 7777
    ServerName <machine host name>
    DocumentRoot <root document folder>
Now reading the documentation from the Oracle Application Server Installation notes for the Http Server, they document how to do this (in the loadbalancer section - this will eventually be used in the hardware setup):
    Port 80
    Listen 7777
    Listen 80
    # Virtual Hosts
    # This section is mandatory for URLs that are generated by
    # the PL/SQL packages of the Oracle Portal and various other components
    # These entries dictate that the server should listen on port
    # 7777, but will assert that it is using port 80, so that
    # self-referential URLs generated specify www.oracle.com:80
    # This will create URLs that are valid for the browser since
    # the browser does not directly see the host server.oracle.com.
    NameVirtualHost <machine ip>:7777
    <VirtualHost <nameofmachine>:7777>
    ServerName login.<company>.com.au
    Port 80
    </VirtualHost>
    # Since the previous virtual host entry will cause all links
    # generated by the Oracle Portal to use port 80, the server.company.com
    # server needs to listen on 80 as well since the Parallel Page
    # Engine will make connection requests to Port 80 to request the
    # portlets.
    NameVirtualHost <machine ip>:80
    <VirtualHost <nameofmachine>:80>
    ServerName login.<company>.com.au
    Port 80
    <VirtualHost>
Note that I used slightly different names for the url's rather than the oracle names www.oracle.com and server.oracle.com
Now after applying this, I noticed not only could I not go to the oiddas from the original machine name, but also couldnt go there from the new machine name.
Also I was not even able to go to the standard index page whereby you can go to the enterprise manager for the application server, from either names.
The following urls provide me with "The Page Cannot Be Displayed" error message:
    http://login.<company>.com.au:7777/
    http://<nameofmachine>:7777/
The following urls provide me with "Page Under Construction" error message:
    http://login.<company>.com.au/
    http://<nameofmachine>/
Could someone please tell me why this is the case, considering I am using the installation procedures Oracle has published within the Oracle Http Server Admistrators Guide (http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B14099_19/web.1012/b14007/netconf.htm#sthref379).
    Cheers
    Rodney

    Hi Rondey,
Ik think that I can see your probleem.
Just change the following line at your httpd.conf, then restart the component.
First of all if the port is installed with nr. 7777. then the listen process will be on port 7778
the second thing is just try to do the following steps
    ((Port 80 to Port 7777)))
    Listen 7778
    %%%% In loadbalancer section %%%%%%
    just add the following lines
    Listen 80
    Listen 8103
    Listen 8102
    NameVirtualHost *
    NameVirtualHost *:8103 or 80
If you want to use this ports (8103 or 8102) for other site (url), then
    <VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName <machine ip> or (host name)
    Hear from U,
    Regards,
    Hamdy

  • Oracle ASM on top of ZFS volumes

What kind of overhead is involved if we configure Oracle ASM on top of ZFS volumes? Has anyone performed benchmarks using this scheme?

I've not done it personally with DNFS but I have created a multitude of clusters with NetApp on their NFS file system without ever having an issue other than saving a lot of money.

  • Oracle ASM installation and raw device options

I am looking to install Oracle ASM on Linux Red Hat AS 4 (ia64) using Oracle 10.2.0.3.
A general question I have regarding prerequisites for ASM using raw devices. It appears there are 2 options for dealing with RAW devices.
    1. Use the ASM library driver
    or
    2. simply bind the devices to raw devices (and then install a new $OH with an ASM instance)
Is there a recommendation from Oracle, industry best practices, expert opinions on which way to go?
If I understand correctly it sounds like option 2 will require an ASM $OH and instance. Is that right or do both option require this?
Can someone provide guidance as to which option I should use, an Oracle whitepaper, a recommendation, instructions or something.
Any help or insight is provided as to which option I should use.
    Thank you.
    echardrd

OK. Perhaps I am a little condused then. From what I read Oracle ASM recommends the use of RAW devices for ASM storage devices. What I have is a new LUN presented to my database server from the SAN. I assumed that the LUN needs to be mounted in some fashion on the server, but my SA tells me in order to mount it, would require the use of a filesystem. If we put a filesystem(NTFS, ext, etc) on the LUN prior to mounting it, will ASM be able to use it? If ASM can use a device that has a filesystem on it will this add unneccessary overhead (I/O)?
I guess my question is for ASM should I
    1. use a RAW partition or a filesystem? Does it matter?
    2. Will RAW have better I/O performance?
    3. How do i make the LUN presentation from the SAN a usable RAW device to my database server? Any steps or guidance would be helpful since my SA and I can not seem to bridge this gap.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Do we need to Set variable ORACLE_HOME properly (Grid Home) while starting RDBMS instance?
e.g ORACLE_HOME=/u01/app/11.2.0/grid*I recommend you set ORACLE_HOME properly for each Oracle Installation when you use SQLPLUS.
    i.e: cat /etc/oratab
    orcl:/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_1
    db10g:/u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1
+ASM1:/u01/app/11.2.0/gridAlso you can startup/shutdown our database with SQLPLUS using ORACLE NET*, but it must be configured properly.
My recommendation <s>is always</s> use SRVCTL and CRSCTL to manage to your environment. Track all the process of initialization processes through the logs using ADRCI utility (only 11.1 or later).
When use SRVCTL or CRSCTL to manage I recomend you use (GRID HOME).
    SQL> alter database open;
    alter database open

SQL>I give to you three options:
1° - Add more asmdisk on Diskgroup +FRA
2° - Make backup of all archivelog using RMAN and option delete input (i.e backup archivelog delete all input;)
3° - If this database is for TEST ONLY and you not need backup or recovery of then you can delete all archivelog using RMAN (i.e delete archivelog all;)
I recommend you create routine of backups of the database and archivelog to prevent this area becomes exhausted.
If you need the database in archivelog but it is only to test then create routine to delete archivelogs periodically.
If you dont need the database in archivelog, then just disable it.

  • Using ZFS for Oracle RAC 11gR2 binaries

    Hi,
    We have following scenario,
Two Node Cluster: Oracle RAC 11Gr2 with Clusterware on Solaris 10
We want to keep Oracle & Clusterware binaries on ZFS mirror file system on each node locally and for Data files, FRA, Voting disks & OCR on shared SAN using ASM.
My question, is the above scenario certified by Oracle or can we keep Oracle binaries on ZFS...?
    Will appreciate your input.
    Thanks

Well my confusion started after reading this doc on oracle support:
Certification of Zeta File System (Zfs) On Solaris 10 for Oracle RDBMS [ID 403202.1]
"Oracle database 10gR2 (10.2.0.3 and higher patches), 11gR1 (11.1.0.6 and higher patches) and 11gR2 (11.2.0.1 and higher patches) are certified with Solaris 10 ZFS on Sparc 64-bit and Solaris x84-64. See Solaris ZFS_Best_Practices_Guide. This is for single instance ONLY. ZFS is currently not applicable to RAC and not Certified to use it as a shared filesystem."

  • Several questions about oracle ASM in 11gR2.

    Hi, all.
The db is 11.2.0.3 on a linux machine.
I have several questions about oracle ASM functionality.
    1. V$ASM_DISKGROUP.ALLOCATION_UNIT_SIZE is the stripe size in bytes??
    2. V$ASM_DISK.DISK_NUMBER is unique to a physical disk??
    3. if the second question is the case,
disk_number=0 (a physical disk) has 14 partition on it.
And each partition belongs to several diskgroups.
    Is ths right??

    1. No. The stripe size always equals 128 KB in any configuration.
(http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e18951/asmcon.htm#BABCGDBF)That is not a true statement. Please read the document, the stripe size depends upon what method of striping we using (fine-grained or coarse-grained)
    --from the same oracle document:
To stripe data, Oracle ASM separates files into stripes and spreads data evenly across all of the disks in a disk group. The fine-grained stripe size always equals 128 KB in any configuration; this provides lower I/O latency for small I/O operations. The coarse-grained stripe size is always equal to the AU size (not the data extent size).
--are we using fine grained or coarse-grained ? and how to change the striping method (using TEMPLATES)

  • Configure WebSphere Portal Server to use LDAP (Oracle Internet Directory)

I did configuration for WebSphere Portal to use security with LDAP Oracle Internet Directory (OID). The script for configuring works well (WPSConfig.bat action-secure-portal-ldap)
But when i start Portal Server it cannot start successfully. I did check in log file and found a error on SystemOut.log as attachment log below. I don't know what happen with WebSphere Portal Server.
If you guys know how to fix it please let me know or point me some documents to configure this again.
    Thanks in advanced.
Servlet E com.ibm.wps.engine.Servlet init EJPFD0016E: Initialization of service failed.
com.ibm.wps.ac.DomainAdministratorNotFoundException: EJPSB0107E: Exception occurred while retrieving the identity of the domain adminuser/admingroup uid=wpsadmin,cn=Users,dc=localhost,dc=com.

There is no clear documentation available to enable custom security but IBM info center has decent documentation for LDAP based security. I would say follow the steps mentioned for IBM directory and then modify the necessary configuration parameters for OID. This should solve your issues. For better help open a PMR with IBM to get necessary quick help.

  • How to configure Oracle 10g to use 4GB memory

I'm trying to configure Oracle 10g to use >4GB memory. Have configured server boot.ini with required flags (/3GB /PAE). Rebooted server then created standard database, then connected to db instance and changed oracle parameters DB_BLOCK_BUFFERS, USE_INDIRECT_DATA_BUFFERS as required. Restarted DB instance, DB fails to restarted with SGA memory error. According to oracle user docs the SGA is nolonger in effect due to previous settings. Can you provide example of SPFILE with parameters settings that do work and use >4GB memory. Current server has 8GB, 2 x Dual XEON core/processors (i.e. 8 processors)

The recommended /3GB switches in the boot.ini file can only be used with the following operating systems editions (KB article 291988):
    Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
Microsoft Windows 2000 Data Center Server
Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition
Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Data Center Edition
Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003
Important: Windows 2000 and 2003 Server Standard Editions DO NOT SUPPORT /3GB Switch.
So if your OS is listed above, then you cannot have a larger SGA.

How to configure Oracle 10g Advanced Security to use SSL concurrently with database User names and passwords
In Oracle Advanced Security Documentation it is mentioned that i can use SSL concurrently with DB user names and passwords. But when i configure the client certificate on the client my DB connection is getting authenticated using the certificate, which out passing user id or password.
We want to connect to Oracle DB over SSL channel so that the data packets are not in clear text. Also we want the user to make a connection using user id and password.
Basically we want SSL with out authentication.
