Conforming timeline for Color (workflow INSANITY!)

Hi all, I've got a doozie of a workflow issue here, hopefully someone can offer a good piece of advice, it'd be a huuuge help!
What I've got going on is this - working on a 3D animated TV show, the producers decided they wanted to be able to color correct the characters, environments, and props all separately, prior to final color correction. We tried doing this in color, but color is unable to import mattes, so that option was out. What we had to do was layer our shots with B&W mattes in FCP, using composite mode -> Luma travel matte, and CC each layer using the 3-way CC, which has been working fantastically. Now, we need to send the projects to Color for a final pass prior to sending off our master. (I know this is NOT an ideal workflow, believe me, it was simply the only way to do what they needed to be done at this point)
The thing is, I need to send the entire composite image into color, not the multiple tracks. I'd like to do this without bouncing each shot, scene or the entire episode individually, unless there's an automated way to do so. (it'd be nice to be able to correct any small shot-to-shot difference if possible afterwards, though the differences should be minor, if any exist at all). The most important is scene-to-scene CC. Is there a command to conform down each edit, merging all the layers into a single clip and in effect bouncing all layers?

DVCPROHD tapes are compressed 6:1 and are 8-bit at 960x720. Capturing that as uncompressed would essentially yield pixel interpolated results. 960x720 will be stretched to 1280x720 and your signal may be "cleaner" (I think it is 150mb/s uncompressed), but it is 8-bit compressed footage being "upconverted", so to speak, to an uncompressed format.
I know people who have used DVCPROHD tapes to go to film with, but I also know people who swear against it. Personally, I've never tried. My work is DVCPROHD with the VariCam, but I rarely have a need for uncompressed material.

    I am an experienced user of  PPRO CS5.  I am a novice with color correcting and color grading.  I am also just barely competant in AE CS5.  It has been suggested that I use AE for color correcting my footage.  Can you advise me as to the most logical workflow for doing this in coordination with PPRO CS5?  Are there some tutorials that you recommend?  I subscribe to Lynda.com and I think that they have some great tutorials, I am unsure as to where to begin looking and what to search for.

    You can do it that way, sure. But you don't have to. You can accomplish quite a lot without leaving PPro. This has two major advantages. First, if you aren't using AE for anything else, it gets you out of using AE at all, so gets you out of climbing another set  of learning curves.
    Second, even if you are using AE for other things (I use AE to make motion lower thirds, for example), doing the work in PPro can improve exporting speeds. This is because AE gets restricted to a single processor core in some workflows as discussed in this thread and others (search around if you're interested). This can make exporting take 3x as long or longer, depending on how much footage has to be processed by AE.
    So, how to do color correction without leaving PPro? Use either a luma corrector or luma curve effect to set black and white points, and contrast (use a waveform monitor to help). Then use a three way color corrector effect to get rid of any residual color casts (use the vectorscope to help, and the RGB parade, etc.).
    If you find you have specific colors that need to be fixed, you can apply another three way color correction effect and use it to make that secondary color correction (for example I find the blue dyes used in many labels tend to fluoresce under fluorescent lighting, and has to be desaturated with a secondary color correction or it "blooms" on an HDTV -- IOW, it has to be made "broadcast safe").
    If you want tutorials for using these tools, the ones on Creative Cow by Andrew Devis are quite good, and free. The ones on color correction with PPro cs6 start at tutorial number 47. There's a bunch of them. All good.
    Finally, get a copy of Van Hurkman's Color Correction Handbook. May be the best technical book I've ever read, and it'll certainly point you in the right direction for doing color correction work regardless of which tools you use to do it.

  • Calibrate 2nd monitor for coloring

    I have a 23inch older apple cinema display and ive calibrated it with a spyder2express but It does not seem to always be consistent. I don't need a professional setup I just want a roughly calibrated consistent monitor that i can trust is the same. This project will mostly be on blu Ray and DVDs. I was wondering if maybe since the apple monitor is older that it may have issues with consistency? After it warms up or anything. Would I be better with a LCD tv as a reference monitor that I calibrate with the spyder since it's where the final project will be seen? Or a newer HD monitor? I know some of the non apples are getting cheaper.

    A search of this forum will reveal a large number of threads, the gist of which reduce to:
    The Spyder2Express is a calibration tool for photographers consequently not appropriate for use in video and the Apple Cinema Display is one of the worst possible solutions for grading digital media. Old ones worse so, but you already know that, but this is pretty much universally true of all graphics displays.
    COLOR is tailored for broadcast use with CCIR709 guidelines as its preset, and unchangeable, output standard for Quicktime workflows. Unless you are working under Snow Leopard you will experience gamma consistency problems between COLOR and all the other Final Cut Studio applications. There are innumerable threads covering that issue.
    You will likely not be able to calibrate a regular LCD monitor with the Spyder since it cannot operate at the low levels generated at broadcast standard biases. In other words it will not be able to do a "black balance", and it is unlikely that you will be able to set your monitor to the recommended brightness used by broadcasters, so a "white balance" is probably out of reach as well. Nearly all consumer "TVs" employ "dynamic contrast" to sweeten distributed media, so they are disqualified for professional use.

  • Color workflow validation

    Hi all. First time post here.
    Being self-taught sometimes means having to unlearn bad habits learned from various forums and the good ol' internet, right?
    I need some help "validating" my current color workflow, to see whether  I'm actually wasting too much time and energy on the wrong habits  (probably am!), after having recently seen a colleague of mine use  something utterly different as workflow.
    Got my screen and printer calibrated right now, and my  color settings in Illustrator and Photoshop matching. Basic so far.
    Now when I start a new project in Illustrator, I go through my swatch  book (4-color process guide book) to pick out a CMYK build I like and  apply that to my design. The color up on the screen doesn't really match at all my swatch book (I know, different gamut), but I'm basing myself on the swatch  book so I know what I'm aiming for... (& let me make it clear; I do not actually use any spot colors in my final layout, just a small square of it somewhere for referencing purposes only).
    Finally, I go to Photoshop once the designing is done and use the color  picker to find the closest Pantone match (for solid coated).
    So then I return to AI, and apply that Pantone color off my artboard for  my printer to have as reference, if needed. The breakdown of that PMS  color is never really spot-on the CMYK build I initially started with -  it's usually off by 5-10%. Normal I imagine.
    For instance, I chose CMYK build 100/70/0/0 in my guide book. That gives  me PMS 2945 in PS. When I click "OK" in PS, PMS 2945 becomes  100/70/17/3 in its equivalency as CMYK. Pretty close but not perfect.
    When I go back to AI and apply swatch 2945 and click "Convert to CMYK",  the breakdown suddenly gives me 100/45/0/14. A little too far off for my  tastes, but hey...
    Reason I do all these steps is because the colors I pick out in the  swatch books to begin with never match what I see on screen, so my  clients always freak out when they receive soft proofs and then see the  finished printed results. The colors always look a wee bit lighter on  screen than on print.
    I'm aware that screen representation is pretty much useless even with  proper calibration (for lack of better wording), but can I fully trust and base myself on my swatch books - considering that the stock I'm  printing on is different, etc, etc? Especially because I'm dealing with  blues right now...
    Would you(s) say this is a somewhat correct workflow or utterly  ridiculous workflow? (And please be gentle if going the ridiculous route  ).
    And if so, how would you(s) start a project from scratch??

    First I think you have badly calibrated system. With properly calibrated system what you see on your monitor should give a very good representation of your final colors, although for offset print you should always have a print proof accepted from your print shop. I use print proof not because I don't trust my monitor but because it requires client approval and the print shop can guaranty the color match. Obviously there is a difference between colors produced by emitting light vs reflecting but the eye has a good adaptive system of recognizing the same colors produced differently and proper color management takes this into account. If your standards are very high a proper calibration and viewing environment should give you a very good screen representation of the final result. Many Artists and designers create colors successfully referring entirly to monitors.

    I'm not sure why you are even using Photoshop for that but , Illustrator is much more accurate than Photoshop when matching RGB and CMYK to Pantone colors. Also have in mind that the Pantone match depends on your color settings. The color managed program you are using for matching Pantone color will use the display color space of your image, in combination with your monitor profile to figure out the best Pantone color match based on the assumption of how the color is displayed on the monitor and seen by the user. So the Pantone match may be different for each user if the color settings are set differently. Photoshop will choose Pantone 2945 C for your CMYK color if the image is assumed to be displayed in U.S.Web Coated (SWAP) v2 color space. Change that to something else and the Pantone match will be different. Interestingly though, Illustrator with the same settings picks Pantone 2728 C which is much more closer to the original color. I'm not sure as to why Photoshop is that much off - ask the Photoshop programmers, but this is why I always use Illustrator for color conversions.

  • Proper color workflow with CMYK inkjet printer

    Hi, I work in an academic science group that has a networked HP DesignJet 800ps printer (postscript RIP). Unlike many inkjets, it appears to be a true CMYK printer - that is, our i1 Match software recognizes it as a CMYK device. We do all our printing in house - we don't have to worry about commercial printing or publishing, and our color management needs are basically confined to trying to have the printer's output match what we see on our monitors when we print photos in Photoshop or posters in Illustrator.
    Having previously worked only with RGB printers and in Photoshop, I am pretty much lost now as to how to set up our color management workflow. (And don't even ask about my colleagues. :-)) I've never had to worry about either CMYK workspaces or printers before. I want to keep things as simple as possible for the staff here, given that none, including myself, are graphics specialists.
    I've looked at the "Color Workflows for Adobe Creative Suite 3" document published by Adobe, and although it is very meticulous, none of the examples seem to match our situation. Specifically, all the info regarding CMYK printing involves working with commercial presses, which is not relevant to us.
    I would like to avoid making my colleagues work in different color spaces depending on whether they are working in Illustrator or Photoshop - ideally, I would like it if we could stay in RGB at all times. First question: Is this unrealistic given that we have a CMYK printer?
    No doubt I will have more questions, but I want to start simple for now. Thanks for helping me out - this is not my area of expertise.

    As Peter points out in his post, it is most likely that your RIP is a CMYK RIP (most RIP's are.) If that is the case, you'll be profiling a CMYK device, not an RGB device (as you have in the past.) It is a totally different exercise to profile a CMYK device - ink limits and Kgen are variables that must be dealt with.

    Color management is all about moving from one device/color space to another device/color space while maintaining color appearance as closely as possible.
    1) Based on the description of your workflow, step one is to create your original art in a well-behaved RGB color space (like Adobe98) while viewing it on a well-calibrated monitor.
    2) If your final output is to be on the HP 800ps, step two would be to preview that art on your monitor as it would look on the HP. This is called soft-proofing - a process by which the art is viewed through the HP profile on-screeen so you can see what happens to all those beautiful, rich RGB colors when they're squeezed into the smaller gamut of the HP profile.
    To do this, you go to View > Proof Set-Up > Custom, and choose the HP 800ps profile from the pop-up of all the profiles on your system. You can also choose from among 4 rendering intents - Relative Colorimetric, Perceptual, Absolute Colorimetric, and Saturation. Choosing the correct rendering intent is key - this willl determine how Photoshop deals with the out-of-gamut colors. Without getting into an explanation of what each RI does, the important thing is to choose the one that LOOKS the best on screen. There's no magic to it. In general, for photographic images, you'll be choosing from Relative or Perceptual. For vector graphics (which it sounds like you're doing), throw Saturation into the mix as well. Just try them and see which looks best.
    Additionally, be sure to check "Black Point Compensation."
    This will give you a good idea of what the final printed version will look like. While you're in soft-proof mode, you can edit the RGB file to alter the way out-of-gamut colors appear. In fact, there's no reason why you couldn't create your art from the beginning while in soft-proof mode. Using a well-built profile and a good calibrated monitor, you should be able to get an extremely close match between monitor and print.
    3) When you print, be sure to choose the same profile/rendering intent that you used in Proof Setup.
    Again, it all starts with a good profile. Good luck.

  • Rendering intent for color conversions

    As I understand it, when I make a new CMYK swatch in InDesign and type my recipe in, Adobe converts it to LAB and that is the number that is used behind the scenes to convert to RGB or to different CMYK profiles. Curiosity question: does the software reference the ICC profile that is set as the working space in order to make that initial CMYK to LAB conversion? Also, is it known if the software preserves and uses the numbers to the right of the decimal points for CMYK and LAB values, or does it all get rounded off? And finally, going far into the weeds: is it known what rendering intent is used?

    Starting with last question first, the rendering intent is what you choose in Photoshop > Edit > Color Settings. At the top of the dialog box there in Photoshop are your choices for what color model your CMYK and RGB should be expressed in. These become the working color spaces for CMYK and for RGB. Working spaces imply that whatever picture you open and edit in Photoshop, it takes on this ICC profile of color model. Having a same choice from Photoshop for ICC color model means consistency in interpreting color, file after file. Near the bottom of the expanded Color Settings dialog box is the Rendering Intent, which is usually set to Relative Colorimetric.
    What is Rendering Intent? ACE is the translator. His job is to translate visual color from one math number world to another math number world, with the intention of holding the visual color the same. When he translates numbers (representing colors) from one color space to another, inevitably some color will be lost in translation. Rendering Intent is a conscious decision for how to compromise colors that might be outside the gamut of the receiving color space. Bear in mind that many pictures, some color lost in translation is so slight so as to be scarcely perceptible.
    Make your house rules choices here in Photoshop. Save as named .csf file. Then, in Bridge, click on Edit > Creative Suite color settings. Choose to apply this new custom-named house rules for your color workflow. In applying it, Bridge sends out instructions to Illustrator, InDesign, and Acrobat to follow the lead of Photoshop in adopting the same "house rules" for translating color.
    If the Photoshop file being placed into InDesign already has the house-rules color space profile, it passes straight into InDesign without being re-interpreted/re-translated. (Like having a Smart Tag that allows you to drive through the toll-booth of the interstate. Like having a passport and express check-in at the airport. No need to re-examine you; you are already cleared. These are illustrations, by the way!)
    Yes (your second question), ACE, in a behind-the-scenes support operation, checks all ICC color profile "passports" to see whether you need translating prior to entry, or merely waved through into InDesign. If the picture file already has the same working space as defined in Photoshop, it is allowed in unchanged. If the picture file doesn't have the same house color space, it is translated to the working color space, and allowed in afterwards. You might liken it to being issued a temporary passport. Do numbers get rounded off? Yes and no. Visual colors that exist in both color realms can be translated with great precision. Visual colors outside of the gamut of the receiving color space will change a bit, which is to say their numbers also change a bit.
    As to your first question, is LAB at the center of things? Yes, in Photoshop. Lab color mode is the closest thing to a number system that consistently matches human visual color perception. Photoshop natively thinks in Lab, and translates out to all other color models, especially RGB and CMYK. Make sure to always run your pictures through Photoshop first (I like it's color management policies to force a permanent change to the house color space by choosing Conver to Working RGB/CMYK). After that, you place them into InDesign. In this way, all pictures already have a SpeedPass, so to speak, and InDesign does not re-translate the color. InDesign does not handle the Lab numbers, but is rather given the resulting conversion numbers by the translator, ACE, (if it needs to) working behind the suite of four softwares.
    You might enjoy reading the book: Real World Color Management by Fraser, Murphy, and Bunting, and really geek out on this sort of thing.

  • Searching for faster Workflow

    I am still searching for a faster way to do my work.....
    load all the clips 30-50 in the timeline. Color correct the first one and set in-out points and export one. The clip number I have to copy-paste from a spread sheet. But what is so time consuming, waiting for the clip to render and to be written. (each clip is about 15 sec long) I can not find a way to batch export them all (could do that over night) But it is important, that every clip has its original name and stands alone.
    If I select all clips in timeline, it will export as a whole...
    That I don't need.

    Well, I am exporting to 1080p.
    But I got an other surprise:
    I put about 40 clips in the timeline, color corrected them and trimmed them all to 14 sec each clip.
    Then I patch exported them.
    To my surprise, I saw, that the length of each clip exported in original length. Like orig clip before trimming 26 sec. I put the length in timeline to 1400 and then Control V to cut at that point and then deleted the 12 sec. and went on to the next clip by typing 2800 >enter and at that point again Control V >select right clip and hit delete. But the batch export shows the full length clip. Not sure, if the color correction shows in the exported clip.
    Somewhere along the line I must have made something very wrong......?

  • FCP - Color Workflow?

    Ok, I'll try to be as descriptive as possible in my explanation of my workflow. I'm working on color grading a small independent film for a friend. Since we both of Apple computers, we are using FCP and Color. The directory is doing all the editing on her Macbook Pro. I'm doing all the color grading on my Mac Pro. We are both working on external 1Tb hard drives (1 for editing, 1 for grading).
    She starts by editing the film. I already have a copy of her FCP project (and all media files) on my external hard drive. So when she tweaks and edits a sequence, I just copy her FCP project onto my external. I then open her project and export an XML from FCP to reconform with Color.
    Color reconforms the XML fine. It was my knowledge that to get from my Color to her FCP, that I would just need to render my Color project, give her the XML that Color creates for her to import into FCP. Unfortunately that is not as smooth as I was hoping. As soon as she imports the XML into FCP, it is constantly trying to reconnect the media. No problem until I realize that the render in Color produced .movs on my external. I proceed to copy those onto her external and they are not able to link up. I keep getting the error that there is a difference in audio - video tracks.
    I wish the workflow was easier between both programs when they are on different computers. It just seems that they are not meant to handle a project that is edited and graded on different machines. Does anybody have any suggestions to improve the workflow? I'm sure I could be doing something wrong, but I searched and read and could not find much info about working on different computers. Thanks for any help.

    The issue that you are facing is that you did not realize that COLOR would render new media, and it is all video ONLY.
    The workflow that succeeds for sharing projects is one in which the media moves with the project.
    You do not need to move everything everytime. There is a strategy using "Media Manager". Your production partner should "Media Manage" the locked project to the transport drive. You would open that and create a target directory on that drive for COLOR. Render your graded COLOR version to it, do a Send To... FCP, where it will create a new (from COLOR) sequence in the original FCP project and return the whole shebang to the editor. Beware that there may be some panning issues with the XML -reconnected audio. In that case, copy the audio from the original FCP (for COLOR) into the new (from COLOR) sequence. Or bake it out from the original and drop it into the new graded sequence, or wait for the finished wav from the audio post house.... oh, wait a minute, you're probably not getting the audio mixed or sweetened, but whatever.
    There is another, cumbersome, workflow and that has to do with creating a "Final Gather" Quicktime for export. Mostly that option is employed with dpx sequences, since you will by now have probably figured out that COLOR somewhat inconveniently renders each new QT into its own subfolder, which makes them a tiny bit inaccessible for most manual reconnection approaches. To be honest, I haven't used it for so long, that I'm not sure that it works for QT anymore. Worth looking up in the Manual.

    No, they are NOT the same as proxy or optimized.
    When you add a clip to your timeline and, say, apply an effect to it, or superimpose a title on the clip, FCP X has to make many calculations to determine what color each pixel of each frame should be. If a section of your timeline is not rendered, it has to do all these calculations every time you play those frames. A render file has the frames already "calculated", so it plays fast and smoothly.
    For simple compositions and a fast computer, you may avoid rendering completely - and you may also choose to only render the portions where playback stutters.
    Render files can be safely deleted. FCP X can recreate them if needed (either automatically if you have "background render" on, or on demand, when you select the "render" or "render all" commands).

    Hello. I requested as a new feature the next:
    "A special timeline only for import EDL, with only three layers, for video A, B and a transition layer between both, and also perhaps several adjustment layers above, for professional color grading with effects as Colorista 2, for example. After Effects is more suitable for color grading than Premiere for its color management, precise control (mask, tracker, etc) and OpenGL realtime playback. Color grading in the current timeline is possible with only 10-20 layers, but with +100 layer is very dificult, almost impossible.
    Also will be interesting the full screen playback mode as Premiere on desktop second monitor, for video preview."
    Do you think this is a good idea?

    Don't be too anxious to get an entire feature into AE as a single project. Back in the day when we cut and spliced film we worked with a maximum reel size of 1000 feet. That's 10 minutes. Even the colorist at the lab only worked on 1000 feet at a time. When It's time for me to color grade in AE I render to a nearly lossless or lossless 10 bit codec segments or scenes of the movie that go together so that I'm not dealing with every shot.
    This is actually the same way I cut. I cut Scenes together as individual sequences then I drag all of the scenes into a new timeline that is the movie. If a scene needs work then I just open up that scene's timeline and make the changes. This is easier in the long run, faster, and especially easier when you're trying to fine tune the story and the performances. I know a lot of editors that work this way. I've never seen anyone with a bunch of experience just start at 00:00:00;00 and start cutting a show from the first shot to the last. I've never known anyone that was that good.

  • HT4878 Why is this data chart Timeline multi colored (in About/Storage) and the external drive is only pink?

    1. When viewing the Storage Timeline for my Macbook and the External Drive for the Time Machine backup instead of multi-colored bars the data is only showing a one pink one. Is that because it is all "backup" on the external? 2. Is the discrepancy in size the OS being left out? Thanks.

    Time Machine makes full backups of the hard drive. If you want to change this, you can open System Preferences > Time Machine > Options, and add excluded items. However, I recommend you to keep backing up the whole drive, so you will be able to restore the whole backup in case of a hard disk failure

  • How to use different stylesheets for ChangeAttributeRequest workflow in OAM

    Hi,
    We have a requirement to invoke different change attribute request workflows (change password ,change email etc..) from external JSPs..
    I want to apply different stylesheets for each workflow. In the workflow URL if i enter style=stylesheet-name its not using that stylesheet. Always its using the same base stylesheet (wf_changeattr.xsl). How can i use different stylesheets? Any pointers on this is appreciated.

    I did a mistake by entering style=stylesheet-name. I verified the same with xsl=stylesheet-name.

    se10 transaction can be used to see transports by user.  Check off both customizing and workbench requests since you will have both types of transports.  The user id needs to be that of the developer that created the transport.  Modified vs Released - select both if you are not sure if the transports have been released or not.

    Great tutorial. When I build a timelapse I start by importing the image sequence and then make the proper frame size on export. Is there a benefit to creating a project at the proper frame size and rate first?
