Connecting 2 computers to one cable service

I subscribe to TW Roadrunner and I just want to be able to switch internet access from one computer to another so my roommate can use my internet service - I'm told I need a router - I have a Power Mac G4 about 8 years old - 576 MB Ram - 20g HD - I believe I'll need a ethernet cable or that and wireless if that will work with my model - thanks

Hello macrsd. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
If you want to stick with Apple products, the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) will support both wireless and wired clients simultaneously.
For wired connectivity, you will need an Ethernet cable. For wireless, it will depend on your exact G4 model on whether or not it support either the AirPort (802.11b) or AirPort Extreme (802.11b/g) card.

  • Can I connect two computers to one device?

Can I connect two computers to one device? I am trying to have them control different aspects of the experiment that I'm running.

That depends upon the device. If it's GPIB, you could
use the E-NET card to convert it to LAN. That would
allow control by many computers. The only problem with
that might be sychronization. That is, Computer 1 does
its setup. Then Computer 2 does a reset. Compuer 1's
    setup is now gone.
As another poster suggested, you could always network
    between the two computers.

  • How to connect two computers in one room to a router in a 2nd room?

I have a Linksys modem and WRT54G router in an entry panel in my laundry room.  I have newer house with cat5 cables connected from the router to computers in various rooms.  In the room that we use as an office, we want to connect a 2nd computer to the network, but there is only one ethernet jack on the wall and that jack is used for the first (existing) computer in the room.   I don't want to use a wireless connection for 2nd computer.
How do I connect the 2nd computer to network?  Do I connect both computers to a hub in the office and connect the hub to the ethernet jact on the wall?

    HI...
You can definitely connect a HUB or a switch to the Wall jack and then connect the computer to the other ethernet port of the device. Make sure that the cable from the router is connected to any one of the ethernet port and not the uplink port.
"Make sure that the cable from the router is connected to any one of the ethernet port and not the uplink port."
So just for my clarification "You can definitely connect a HUB or a switch to the Wall jack"
Witch port should one use? Till now I thought one should connect the wall jack to the uplink port and the 2 computers to the other ports on the switch or hub?

  • Connect two computers behind one router

    Hi,
We have two computers at home. (One with iChat 3, and one with iChat 4)
    We have Netgear WGT624 router.
We cannot make video chats outside with our AIM/Jabber accounts.
How should we configure our router to use iChat video in both computers?
    Thanks,
    Yoav

You should access the Netgear with a web Browser and confirm it is using UPnP
UPnP allows the computers/Apps to open the ports it needs when it needs them and will allow multiple computers to use the same ports at the same time if requires.
It SHOULD NOT be doing Port Forwarding (Services) at the same time - nor Port Triggering if that one has it or DMZ as these will clash with UPnP

  • Connecting two computers with xover cable

I have the Sun Java System Application Server PE8 installed on a computer under Windows XP Professional, and another computer to connected to it with a crossover cable.
The client can ping the host, but when the client tries to connect to the app server with a web browser I get a "Failure to connect to web server" error.
However, I can connect to the app server from a browser on the host itself.
Do you I need to anything to make the app server accessible from another machine? Perhaps define some security settings?
    bobj5000

It sounds like you got it right if the client can ping the host so I'm not sure why you can't get to the web server. I would assume if you can ping you would be able to connect to the web server. I don't think this is an appserver issue so I'm not sure you will get a response in this forum. Maybe you could try another resource that deals more with setting up windows boxes using a crossover cable.

  • WRT54G:can I connect 2 computers using different cables ?first computer

I already have 2 PCs connected with straight cable and 1 PC using crossover and it works. I'm interested to know if someone thinks this can create problems.

  • HT4889 I can connect both computers via ethernet cable?

I recently bought a new retina display MacBook Pro and have files and applications I want to transfer over from my big clunky Mac to my new laptop for college (audio engineering).
I want to save some money and not buy a firewire or wait like 5 hours to transfer everything via my wi-fi network so is it possible to use the ethernet cable to transfer everything?

Yes. The Mac's Ethernet ports are autopolarizing and will self-assign an IP address from the 169.x.x.x reserved pool. However, I fail to see how you are going to plug in an Ethernet cable to a Retina Mac without an adapter.

You won't get anything higher than 1280 x 800 out of the Mac mini however.

  • Connection speed OK; cable service/lines OK; sudden s l o w reception. Why?

We have 2 laptops and a PC all running XP, connected via a Linksys WRT54G v.2 and a D-Link modem to 4MB/512K cable service.   Always had virtually instantaneous connection, excellent signal strength, 54.0 mbps speed, set for automatic connection.
Until about a month ago. Then, every once in awhile it was like dialup around here when more than 1 of us was online.  Took nearly 2 minutes to download any website, no matter if it was almost all text.  Forget uploading.
    So...
Had the cable service out here 3x, 3 different guys.  According to them connection was and is fine in both directions.
To humor me they the service line and the internal and external splitters (we have dish service for TV, had it for 2yrs now with no problem).
I also replaced the ethernet line to the router.
And replaced the coax inside from the splitter to the modem.
Although the signal barely extends outside our large yard, and we're the only one around here with computers, I even (finally, I'm ashamed to say) secured the network.
And for a couple days, all was OK.
Just for grins, I even upgraded our cable service to 1MB.
Well, today things seem to be s lo w ing down again when more than one of us is surfing. No gaming, no videos; we're talking "shopping ebay" or "reading blogs".
Any bright ideas on what the heck is going on?  The only thing I haven't done is relocate our cordless phone, but it's in the same place it's always been.   Problem's identical on all 3 computers, so I don't think we can blame them.
Will switching to a router with a faster transmission speed have any effect?
Please speak in Idiot. I am seriously untechnical.

  • Switched from DSL to cable modem. My Airport light won't turn green. Keeps blinking orange. No wireless now and can't connect to more than one computer! ?????

Switched from DSL to cable modem. My Airport light won't turn green. Keeps blinking orange. No wireless now and can't connect to more than one computer! ?????

    Hmmmm.
If you reset the AirPort Extreme by holding in the reset button for 9-10 seconds and then releasing, the AirPort should be back in default settings which would allow mutliple computers to connect to the LAN ports on the AirPort.
Power off the cable modem for now and leave it off at least 15 minutes.
With the AirPort Extreme still powered on, hold in the rest button on the back for 9-10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the AirPort Extreme to restart to a slow, blinking abmer light.
Then, power off the AirPort Extreme.
Check to make sure that the Ethernet cable from the modem is connected to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Extreme.
After the modem has been powered off for at least 15 minutes, power it up and let it run for 5 minutes by itself.
Now, power up the AirPort Exteme and let it run for 2-3 minutes
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Connect an Ethernet cable from your Mac to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Express
Click on the AirPort Exteme, then click Continue to follow the guided setup tp configure the AirPort Extreme.  You can use the same wireless network name, password, etc that you used before, or set up a new name and password, etc.

I haven't researched it and I don't claim to know everything about iTunes, but it has always been my understanding that you can only use one computer per iPod, but you can have multiple iPods per computer. From what I understand, this is to prevent illegal sharing and whatnot.

  • Windows 8.1 - Windows Couldn't connect to the System Event Notification Service service

I have an issue that has been bothering me for a while on new 8.1 computers. Standard users are not able to log into the computer on the first try consistently. They receive the error message: Group Policy client service failed the sign-in access is
denied. They are stuck at the logon screen.
If an administrator logs in (local or domain), they can log in but get a black desktop with two error messages. The first is Location is Not available - C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop is unavailable. The second error message is a popup
balloon. It states "Failed to Connect to a Windows service. Windows couldn't connect to the System Event Notification Service service."
When a standard user attempts to log in, event viewer records three warnings. They are listed in order from oldest to newest
The winlogon notification subscriber <Profiles> was unavailable to handle a critical notification event. -Logged 9:14:44
The winlogon notification subscriber <GPClient> failed a critical notification event. - Logged 9:14:44
The winlogon notification subscriber <Profiles> was unavailable to handle a notification event. - Logged 9:14:49
After a reboot, users still have the issue. I noticed that the user profile services and system event notification service are not running though their startup type is automatic. They start after a minute or two.

    Hi Joseph__Moody,
Based on your description ,I assume it is a domain environment .First of all ,I would suggest you to try to update all the machine .
"I have an issue that has been bothering me for a while on new 8.1 computers"
Do you mean all the Windows 8.1 machine share the same symptom or just a specific one ?Did the machine work correctly before ?When did the issue start to occur ?Have you installed any third party software before ?Can we operate the machine when we login with
    an administrator account ?
If the issue occurred with the specific machine :
"The first is Location is Not available - C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop is unavailable."
Please try the following suggestions if we can operate the machine when we login with the administrator account :
Open Windows Explorer and navigate to: C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile and verify if it has the Desktop folder there. If the folder doesn`t exit, we can copy from C:\users\Default\Desktop location(This folder is hidden by default).
We also can try the following suggestions to have a troubleshoot :
1.Run "sfc /scannow"or "dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth" to check the health of the system files.
2.Perform a full scan with an antivirus software.
3."They start after a minute or two."
I suspect there is a third party service confilct here. Please perform a clean boot to verify whether there is a third party conflict here .
How to perform a clean boot in Windows
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135
If the issue occurred with multiple machines in the domian ,I would suggest you to check whether you have configured any logon scripts and logon group policy .We can remove the machine from the domain to have  a troubleshoot .
If the issue occurred recently ,we can perform a system restore to recover the machine to a previous normal point.
    Best regards

  • Connecting 2 computers thru Time Capsule without Internet?

I had started a question in another area (Mountain Lion) because I am trying desperately to migrate a Windows PC running Windows 7 to a new iMac.  The Migration assistant on both computers does not find any computers.  The Apple Care people say I am doing everything right, but now some people online are saying that I can't do this wirelessly thru Time Capsule (which we have and is the router for our office which the PC is connected to wirelessly).
The new Mac is in set up beginning mode (meaning it has not been set up wirelessly or anything yet), because on launch it offers to move the data from the PC to set up the new Mac.  It is stuck "looking for a computer"
    Here is the whole discussion:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/23377824#23377824
Today I went by an Apple store to ask their opinion and the guy told me that I can't connect the 2 computers via ethernet (even though that is what the Migration insturctions say to do), but he said that I shoud be able to connect each computer via ethernet to the Time Capsule and have them recognize each other.
Does this sound right to any of you???
The PC is clear across the room and no where near the internet line, so I would either have to buy a REALLY long ethernet cable to drag over to it, or take the whole computer apart to try and get it near the TC.  The mac of course is no problem to move.
I just don't want to do all this if this will not really act as a network (I guess as a server of sorts).
I am confused as the TC manual says that it can be used without internet, but I don't seehow (I've tried rebooting it without a connection).  I do not know why the internet is involved at all since what we need is the TC to act as a wireless router (which it is) and do not need to involve the internet at all to link the 2 computers.
I am just totally frustrated that these computers should just communicate wirelessly and/or with each other somehow and do not seem to, as Apple says they should.  I know this will turn out to be something really simple and dumb and I'm just not seeing it.
Is it not possible to take the TC and reboot it with the 2 computers connected to it and create a network using the TC as a server or router without needing any internet just so I can get this stuff from the PC migrated (and then never have to deal with it again!!!!)
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

I think where the confusion lies is that this is a brand new Mac and NEVER been set up.  We are trying to Migrate from the Windows on initial setup - which is what the Mac asks you when you first start it:  Language, Keyboard (english) and then if you are setting a New Mac or wanting to tranfer your info to set up from another Mac or from a PC.  You choose PC and the MA automatically looks for the other PC.  The Windows MA does the same thing.  You launch it on the PC and it looks for the Mac to connect to.
They are not "finding" each other - even when connected directly via the ethernet cable to each other as dictated by the MA instructions  (see the link you provided and click:
Transferring with the Setup Assistant that appears when your Mac starts up for the first time
This is what I am doing.  This is what 2 different guys from Apple Care also said was correct.
They do not communicate.  This is why some in the ML discussion area are telling me I can't do this with an ethernet cable even though these are the instructions.  They are telling me to use the TC as a router between them.
The PC is already wirelessly connected to the TC but when I connect the Mac to the TC it still does nothing (because I assume it hasn't been "set up" yet to the wireless network).
I did not want to set up the Mac initially on its own because then you create a User and Password and when you migrate it creates a second User and will not migrate into the initial one you set up, ergo you forever are stuck with 2 users on login and 2 sets of stuff taking up space in your Mac.
It should do this on start up.  I have NO doubt this is a PC issue, even though I disabled everything I could possibly see to do on it (this is why I need the PC geek in the UK to make sure).  The Apple techs have told me some people have to disable and reboot this stuff several times (ARGH!) LOL!
Anyway I did wonder when I tried yesterday to simply take TC off the internet connection and set it up on its own, I could never get it to stop looking for internet (I rebooted it and reinstalled it with a new name and password), but when you look at it in Airport Utility (I'm using a Macbook for the set up), you see it still blinking looking for internet.
I could not find any instructions for someone to use the TC as a router only or as a server, even though you can see there are more choices in the AU setup tabs.  The one guy at the Apple store (not Apple Care) said that if I connected the 2 computers to the TC it would act as a router and they could "see" each other for me to setup - but this did not work, hence I came here.
Hope I'm making sense!  Thanks so much for your help.

  • Connecting two computers...

    Hello peeps,
I hope I've come to the right place.
Minutes ago I needed to get some files from one computer to the other, so I figured I'd email them to myself. But then I thought: both computers are literally next to each other, there's got to be a way to send files back and forth without the need of email; and the use of a cable.
You see I am using a router... the one computer (a WindowsXP Home Edition desktop machine) connects directly via an ethernet cable, the other (a MacOSX Tiger MacBook Pro) connects wirelessly.
I've tried as much as I could to find out how to link those two machines, but I can't even make my Mac detect that there is a second computer in the area (using the same router), let alone my Windows, which I am becoming more and more unfamiliar with (because I use my Mac 99% of the time).
Since I honestly don't have a clue, I am just going to wait until somebody who is taught in this kind of stuff, on both operating systems as well, to tell me the steps to take. So please, please, if you can, take the time and try to solve this problem with me as best as you are able to through a forum...
I don't know, are there just a few, simple steps to setting up a local network kind of thing that I am missing, or would you need some technical information from me?
Lastly, I wish everybody a great new year, all the way!!!!

    Templeton Peck,
first thank you a lot for giving me this link; it's a very detailed article and it surely would have solved my problem if I wasn't so unlucky.
I was successful from stages one to four. Stage five I couldn't manage. First I didn't exactly know which IP address to use for my Windows machine.
And then I became confused about the definition of a subnet of an IP address. Partly because the help-site you referred me to got me unsure about which part of the IP address is supposed to be the same, and which is variable.
But that was probably just me!
And when finally something did happen, and I was prompted to enter my Windows workgroup, username and password, the "connecting" box would just stay open for as long as I endured.
Then I would have to relaunch the finder through Onyx since clicking the X to stop the connection attempt didn't do anything.
Or, I would get an error message:
But I really tried everything, including the inclusion of the full folder path in the smb-URL, as you can see...
So unless I frigged something up at stage three...
...this is probably going to be another one of those cases that can't be solved. To be clear: I am unlucky!
Nonetheless, I'd be grateful for another helpful reply from you or anyone else! I might be getting there with continuous help from experienced people, who I hope to meet here

  • Two Routers off One Cable Modem?

Can I run two routers off one cable modem, one a hardwired Windows network and the other an Airport Extreme networking a Powerbook G4 and wireless printer?

No you cannot - unless you pay your cable internet service provider for two public IP addresses.
What I would suggest if you already have the base station but have not yet purchased the router:
    - connect the cable modem to the Base Station's WAN port
    - buy a 4- or 8-port ethernet switch. Connect to the switch the LAN port of the Base Station, and all of your hardwired PCs
What I would suggest if you already have a router and base station:
    - connect the cable modem to the router's WAN port
    - connect all the hardwired PCs to the router's LAN ports
    - connect the Airport Base Station to one of the router's LAN ports, and configure the Base Station to function as a wireless access point per http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx/.59976caa
