ERROR:
ORA-00257: archiver error. Connect internal only, until freed.
How do I connect internally?

A quick search for the error revealed this(though its straight forward )
ORA-00257: archiver error. Connect internal only, until freed.
Cause: The archiver process received an error while trying to archive a redo log. If the problem is not resolved soon, the database will stop executing transactions. The most likely cause of this message is the destination device is out of space to store the redo log file.
Action: Check archiver trace file for a detailed description of the problem. Also verify that the device specified in the initialization parameter ARCHIVE_LOG_DEST is set up properly for archiving.
Only sys logins are allowed.Free the space of your archive destination and retry.
Aman....

  • Database Security against 'connect internal'

    Hi Dba's
Is there any way to set up a password authentication while connecting as
oracle(unix)user during 'connect internal' connection?. The reason is though oracle owner password can be kept properly, still the system admin(unix)can still use su (unix)command to become oracle user and connect to oracle without validating password.
What is the best way to set up a password by which the password will be validated during the connection time.
Please note ....!!!! Creation of exclusive password file, changes in init parameters everything has been tried.
Hence, looking for any better solution.

There certainly is a need for securing your database from administrators. The idea that you MUST trust your dba or your sys admins is no longer a reasonable one. Just to give you an example, let's say a government stores its most confidential secrets in an Oracle database. Trusting the dba is not an option in this situation.
This certainly is an exterme case, but there certainly are many, many other situations that have similar requirements. I'm not sure that everyone's medical records should be available to the dba just because he's in charge of doing backups. The truth of the matter is that many, many dbas are kids straight out of college or independent consultants. This is this way in every industry, including the medical and banking industry.
There are solutions that alleviate the problem, but they are not as good as they should be. For Oracle there are encryption solutions (www.appsecinc.com) that help you prevent dbas from reading the data, but they do not help prevent the data from being destroyed. A good backup plan can help alleviate this problem.
Other possible solutions include setting up good policies that include seperation of duties and the use of a change management department. For a more thorough discourse on security policies for Oracle, check out the Oracle Security Handbook (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0072133252/qid%3D998406055/107-7202182-0758137).

  • Dw cs5 with existing wordpress site hosted on yahoo need help connecting to existing remote database

I am having trouble establishing a database connection.  I can  connect with test databases but am having trouble using dreamweaver wtih  my existing wordpress website.  Am I able to use dreamweaver to edit  and live view my changes before uploading the changed files to my live  site?  Am I able to access my existing wordpress database with  dreaweaver?  I have imported it to my testing server/database but still  seem to be having trouble establishing a connection with it (think maybe  my folder hierarchy might be off).
    macintosh HD/Applications/MAMP/htdocs/nwm/wp/index.php
"nwm" is the name of the folder that I have copied all of my site  files to and the folder I have dreamweaver pointing to.  "wp" is what I  have all of the wordpress files in (the ones I copied from my yahoo  server - including all my current theme files etc.)
I am trying to put the info into the mysql connection dialog box:
Connection Name: Testing (i am assuming this name is for my benefit only and doesn't actually matter)
    MySQL Server: mysql
    User Name: *****
    Password: *****
    Database: wp
    and am getting this message
    MySQL Error#: 2013
Lost connection to MySQL server at 'reading initial communication packet', system error 61
did some google seaches of the error.  Tried turning off the  firewall, and the advance tab allow mysql incoming  (there were 2 one  was allow one was not allow.  I changed both to allow)
Cant really find anything on yahoo to help me out.  Looked in  phpmyadmin database named wp: wp_users to get the username and password  (which due to previous look for help - I think the password was  encrypted cuz it looked like a bunch of mumbo jumbo and am fairly  certain I know the correct password).
Any help would be greatly appreciated!! I spent $50 on live chat  last night trying to resolve the issue only to find out at the end that  the guy really didn't understand my problem and doesn't have  dreamweaver.  I have also watched countless videos on Lynda.com and have  been thru forum after forum.  While this problem is only a couple weeks  old since I just got CS5.  I have been having trouble making any  headway learning php since I cant seem to make it past the set up  parts.  I have done the php / mysql essential training on lynda.com with  relative success except that I really dont want to work with any more  exercise files so I didn't go on to the beyond the basics. I recently  went thru most of the Dreamweaver CS5 and Wordpress 3. Also did the  first 4 chapters of Dreamweaver CS5 with PHP and MySQL. I need to start  integrating things into my live sites.  I am also trying to work my way  thru the learning php, mysql, javascript book by o'reily media by robin  nixon (as fun as reading a math text book) can't get thru it since I  can't relate any of it to my current sites/needs
I am on MacBookPro OSX 10.6.6
Installed MAMP to specification on all 20 tutorials I have tried including lynda.com
Tested the testing server and is working
    Just installed dreamweaver cs5
have been using wordpress online to create and edit posts (recently  upgraded to 3.? whatever the latest update was online which I believe  update the files on my yahoo server?)
Have also installed wordpress on my computer (several times thru each tutorial trying to get this right.)
    Am I expecting the impossible?

If wordpress controls it's own connection why am I unable to use the live view. I have synced the remote site to my local computer so all the files should be just as they are online with the exception of the DB which contains most of the content.
I have done all of those steps.  I have even exported the database from inside internet phpmyadmin and imported into computer phpmyadmin.  When I hit live view I get one of couple of errors.
    1.  "One is that the dynamic related files could not be displayed due to an internal server error"
At some point I was able to view some sample files inside dreamweaver.  But I would like to be able to view my real site files.  I was able to "connect" to the local databases (not the copy of my real one - I think that maybe that was because it is somehow nested inside another db an am going try to reimport to new location).  And then I changed the host/username/password trying to deal with the internal server error. Now instead I get the cannot connect to the database Error 2016 or whatever from the origianl post. Also, I am using yahoo if that matters and all I can find about what their server name is: mysql - is that correct?
I have been thru this so many times with so many different tutorials I am losing track of what is what.
    2.  Can I access my remote database within dreamweaver? I do not want to create dummy files (seems to be a waste of time).  And while if it had worked exporting/importing a duplicate on to my computer would have satisfied me for a little while it also seems some what counter productive.  Since every post and page is different if I were doing a daily updates etc how would I be able to change the formating or design of them if I can't access the remote files.  Would I re- import everytime I want to work on it to get current database?
I am trying to be clear.  I listed all the specs I could think as listed  in your "how to get help fast post" (yes I read that at least twice  too) of all of the steps and possible reasons for my problems.  I also  thought that the forum was on a seperate site so I didn't think it would  count as a duplicate.  I am frustrated to tears and am feeling  incredibly stupid that after all this time and all these tutorials yes  you are right I obviously am not understanding what is going on which is  why I am on this forum.

  • Connection to an external database.

Hi we r using native sql commands and are connecting to external database. As far as I know from the discussions here i thought that these sort of connections are maintained in the table dbcon. But i don't see any entries in that table.
WHere as i could connect to that database succesfully and getting the records.
The table name for the external system is NOVARTIS.TABLE_ADDRESS@ANK like this.
Where could be that settings made.

    Try this Forum Thread:-
    1. In developer server you have to configure the tnsnames.ora. For doing this you should talk with a person who knows how to configure this file. In the register you should especify: protocol, host and port to connect to the other database system.
    2. Then, you enter a register in the DBCON table. In this entrie you especify user, password, database id (in my case I wrote ORA because i am connecting to an oracle database), and in the enviroment field you write the name or alias of the register in the tnsnames.ora
    3. In the abap program you use native sql sentences for connecting to the external database. This is an example:
    EXEC SQL.
    CONNECT TO :p_conexion AS 'C1'
    ENDEXEC.
    IF SY-SUBRC EQ 0.
    EXEC SQL.
    SET CONNECTION 'C1'
    ENDEXEC.
    EXEC SQL PERFORMING save_data.
    SELECT COD_CGE, COD_SAX, TO_CHAR(FECHA,'YYYYMMDD'),
    VALOR, HORA, TIPO, PAIS, SOCIEDAD
    INTO :wa_serv_aux
    FROM TEST_TABLE
    WHERE FECHA >= TO_DATE( :W_FEC1 , 'YYYY/MM/DD')
    AND FECHA <= TO_DATE( :W_FEC2 , 'YYYY/MM/DD')
    ENDEXEC.
    EXEC SQL.
    ROLLBACK
    ENDEXEC.
    EXEC SQL.
    DISCONNECT 'C1'
    ENDEXEC.
In the form save_data i insert the work area into the internal table.
And that`s all. The most important thing is to configurate the tnsnames.ora file on the server side.
<i><b>Note:- One small suggestion, Before Posting Thread in SDN, search for the related topics in SDN forums and then post your thread, it would be helpfull for everybody.</b></i>

  • ORA-00257: archiver error. Connect internal only

    Hello everyone,
On 10gR2, if we face the above error, the system would hang for some time. During this time no one will be able to connect. SYSDBA session will hang and wont give you SQL prompt quickly.
I want to know if there is any way to remove this time gap.
    thanks

    Hello,
The ORA-00257 is likely due to a lack of space which prevent generating Archived redologs:
ORA-00257: archiver error. Connect internal only, until freed.
Cause: The archiver process received an error while trying to archive a redo log. If the problem
is not resolved soon, the database will stop executing transactions. The most likely cause of this
message is the destination device is out of space to store the redo log file.
Action: Check archiver trace file for a detailed description of the problem. Also verify that the
device specified in the initialization parameter ARCHIVE_LOG_DEST is set up properly for archiving. So check for a File System full and the use of the Flash Recovery Area (FRA).
The following Note from MOS explains how to check the FRA and how to free space in it:
How to Resolve ORA-00257: Archiver is Stuck Error in 10g? [ID 278308.1]
The database hungs for some time even after clearing the archive log destination. And it is this time that I want to reduce.I think that the best way is to monitore the Archive destination so that you can clear the space before the Database hang.
If you use EM Database Control, you may set some Alert Notification. More over, you have the specific Archive Full Metric:

    Hope this help.

  • ORA-00257: archiver error. Connect internal only, until freed. (DBD ERROR:

    Dear All,
Couple of days ago I changed my database mode to archive.
Database server is 1-gR2 on Linux.
Today i have got this error:
ORA-00257: archiver error. Connect internal only, until freed.
Kindly help me to strat DB again. How to get rid of this error.
    Thanks, Imran

This is not a tempory solution, but the way how You should proceed.
You should regulary backup up database and archive logs and delete the latter in order to prevent such problems.
I would sugest to monitor how fast archive logs are generating and then implement regular archive log backup and deletion. For some site it would be enough to backup and delete once per week, for some there will be need to backup several times per day.

  • ORA-00257: archiver error. Connect internal only, until freed in RAC

    Hi All,
I have installed 2-node 10gR2 RAC on RHEL4 with MSA 1000 as a shared storage. I am using ASM to store the databases files and archive log files in different diskgroups. The ASM diskgroup where archive log file stored is of 100GB size with RAID5 enabled. The database is Archive enabled. I imported only one schema of 4GB of size to the RAC db. today i'm getting "ORA-00257: archiver error. Connect internal only, until freed". Now, i want to stop the archive log mode remove files.
    1. How can i can change the archive log mode to NOARCHIVELOG mode in RAC db?
    2. How can i delete archive log files after changing the archivelog mode from ASM? I dont want take a backup of the database as the data is not important.
Please help..my RAC db is freezed...
    Thanks,
    Praveen

How can i rectify this permanentlyHow do you rectify this "error" everytime you get it ? If you are clearing / deleting files in the db_recovery_file_dest location than you would know that you should either
    a. Increaes db_recovery_file_dest_size (ensuring that the filesystem does have that much space, else increase the filesystem size as well !)
    b. retain fewer files in this location (reduce retention or redundancy)
If you aren't using a db_recovery_file_dest or the archivelogs are going elsewhere and you are manually purging archivelogs, you should look at increasing the size of the available filesystem.
If you are retaining multiple days archivelogs on disk, and running daily full backups, re-consider why you have multiple days archivelogs on disk.
If the problem occurs because of large batch jobs generating a large quantum of redo, either buy enough disk space OR rre-consider the jobs.

  • Installing JDBC driver to connect to Oracle 8i Database from Weblogic 10.3

I want to connect to Oracle 8i database from weblogic 10.3 application server. I found a classes12. zip file on Oracle.com to use as driver for the same.
I am also connecting Oracle 9i database from the app server. Now if i replace the classes12. jar from the lib folder won't it disallow me to connect to the Oracle 9i database.
2ndly the claases12.zip file i found from the site is for jdk 1.2 will it create any problems. Please let me know
Kindly let me know what is the standard procedure to install a new driver in Weblogic 10.3.

I tried to install weblogic 10.3 using jdk 1.5.07 but. it is not supported. Moreover from the sites also i found that it's only the application wars and ears compiled in jdk 1.5 need not be recompiled in 1.6. But no reference of jdk 1.5 is there.
I tried to use thin client from the code and connect to Oracle 7i
    i got the following exception.

  • Createdb prob: orclrun.sh and (no) connect internal

I installed 8.1.5.0.2 ok on a debian potato machine. But I have a problem with creating a database. Using the approach described by John Salvo: use dbassist to create db creation files.
    The dbname = e8
the sid = orcl (also env ORACLE_SID=ORCL)
When running the first script (orclrun.sh), there is a problem after connecting with user internal :
    Oracle8i Enterprise Edition Release 8.1.5.0.2 - Production
With the Partitioning and Java options
    PL/SQL Release 8.1.5.0.0 - Production
    SVRMGR> connect internal
    Connected.
    SVRMGR> startup nomount pfile = /u01/app/oracle/admin/e8/pfile/initorcl.ora
    ORACLE instance started.
    ORA-01012: not logged on
    SVRMGR>
It logs off after specifying the pfile.
Right now I cannot shutdown oracle, because the user internal cannot connect anymore (its asking for a password), and the users sys and system may not connect (db init in progress).
The following illustrates my strange problem:
    Oracle8i Enterprise Edition Release 8.1.5.0.2 - Production
With the Partitioning and Java options
    PL/SQL Release 8.1.5.0.0 - Production
    SVRMGR> connect internal
    Connected.
    SVRMGR> shutdown
    ORA-01012: not logged on
    SVRMGR> connect internal
    Password:
ORA-12705: invalid or unknown NLS parameter value specified
    SVRMGR>
I'm going to start all over again, this time using dbname and sid ORCL
Btw, did any of you experience strange things with the root.sh script? In my case I had to link awk to the right executable and edit the script to change ORACLE_OWNER from the unix uid to the name.

Hmm I am almost definately sure I picked the dedicated server process when using dbassist.
Anyway, yesterday after creating the database, I wanted to shutdown and restart using svrmgrl and had the same problem again:
    oracle@enschede8:~$ echo $ORACLE_SID
    test
    oracle@enschede8:~$ svrmgrl

    SVRMGR> shutdown

    SVRMGR> quit
Server Manager complete. After looking at the create scripts I decided to try this and it worked:
    oracle@enschede8:~$ cat svr
    #!/bin/sh
    ORACLE_SID=test
    export ORACLE_SID
    svrmgrl
    oracle@enschede8:~$ ./svr

  • Svrmgrl - disable password for connect internal

    I have installed Oracle 8.1.5.
When I tried to create a database using svrmgrl manually, I entered the following:
    svrmgrl
    svrmgrl> connect internal;
    Password:
Please advise how I can turn off the Password option for connect internal as in previous version of Oracle.
    Thanks

Christian is absolutely right. The user must be a member of the
dba group which you identified as the default database grup
    during the installation.
The default is dba. If you chose another group, run the installer
again and choose Perform Adminstration Tasks, relink the
    executables and try again.

  • Svrmgrl: connect internal requires password after system crash

    Please help.
    I'm running Oracle 7.3.4 on SunSolaris 2.6.
It seems we had a system crash.
Message when I try to restart the database
    with the runscirpt (rtc2.d....)
"Database "SID" possibly left running when system went down (system crash?).
    Notify Database Administrator.

    Kennwort:
    SVRMGR> ORA-01031: insufficient privileges
    SVRMGR> ORA-01031: insufficient privileges
    SVRMGR>"
    also when I attemting:
    svrmgrl connect internal
I'm prompted for a password (Kennwort).
    I don't know the password.
I tried it as root and oracle user.
    Any suggestions or help?
    Thank you.

In the password file I set the password of the os
user oracle which owns installation. The Password for the password file is supposed to be the SYS password and not OS User oracle which owns installation.
I do not think the Oracle OS user password change is the problem. When you alter SYS password using the alter user command, it should change the password file automatically.
    Try
SVRMGR> connect sys/sys_password as see whether it works. If it does not, then check other issues.

  • Connect internal

    Hi,
I've installed Oracle 8 for Linux. The installation went
correctly but I didn't get to build the database. The reason for
that is that I don't get to connect internal to SVRMGR.
    - I have a linux user oracle that belongs to the group dba.
    - When I run svrmgrl under the linux user oracle the program
displays a message "Connection not open" before the prompt
    SVRMGR>.
    - When I issue the command "connect internal" at the prompt
SVRMGR> the program asks me for a password and I don't have it.
    - I've tried the sys default password change_on_install but it
didn't work. In fact it couldn't work because the database isn't
    build.
    - I'm using Oracle 8.0.5 and Red Hat Linux 5.2.
I think I need some extra configuration to oracle user or dba
group, but I don't know what to do. Could someone help me?

If you are logged into your server as a user in the dba group,
you should be able to connect internal with no password. First,
make sure you are not using SQL*NET. If you are, you may be
required to give a password depending on the parameter
"remote_login_password_file" in the init.ora file (located in
    $ORACLE_HOME/dbs).
In your init.ora parameter file, you may find a line that looks
    like:
    remote_login_password_file=XXX (where XXX=exclusive,shared or
    none)
If you don't want to have a password for internal, set this
parameter to NONE. I believe the default password for internal
is "oracle". Try that out. Otherwise, find the password file on
your Unix server, delete it, and re-create with a password of
your choice using the "orapwd" utility.
