Connecting to a Sybase DB from 10g on Fedora FC5

Hey all,
I have in the past used HS to connect to a Sybase db to pull data over with a script I have devised. However, we have entertained the idea of moving to a linux OS for the server and I am trying to replicate this part of the process with no luck. The previous connection was all parties running strictly on WinX machines.
Right now I am stuck on setting up ODBC on Fedora, but I have been at a loss for a proper driver. The FreeTDS distribution does appear to have a generic driver and I have mananged one connection with tsql but I cannot seem to create a DSN connection so HS has something to connect with.
The driver unixODBC says should be there: libtdsodbc.so, isn't. After going into the noob install instructions and doing particular environment settings, etc...I cannot get a make to compile. The straight up config/make/install does not appear to create the driver file above.
So....has anyone else configured this, is there another way I can go about connecting these two systems or is there no sane way to do this?
Thanks

Lets call the machine that runs Oracle, 'O'; the machine that runs your Sybase, 'S'; and the machine that you have Sybase ODBC drivers and a working DSN, 'G' ('G' for 'Gateway'). Any of these could be the same physical machine.
On machine 'G', once you have a working DSN, you need to install an Oracle Listener and the 'hsodbc' binary and support files. If 'G' happens to be the same machine as 'O', then you will already have these components installed. If 'G' is not the same machine as 'O', you can install Oracle XE, which includes an Oracle listener; hsodbc; all the required support files; and a database. You can disable the database service and delete the database files to save disk space; memory and cpu cycles. Still on machine 'G', configure a '$ORACLE_HOME/hs/admin/initHSSID.ora' file to point to your DSN on that same machine. Configure the 'listener.ora' to server up that HSSID.
On machine 'O', configure a service ('tnsnames.ora') to point to the HSSID on machine 'G', and create a database link to use service.
Example.
1. Machine 'G':
1a. DSN 'Sponge' points to, well, any ODBC source.
1b. File '$ORACLE_HOME/hs/admin/initFruit.ora' contains the following 2 lines:
HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO = SPONGE
HS_FDS_TRACE_LEVEL = 01c. File '$ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/listener.ora' contains the following fragment in the SID LIST:
(SID_DESC=
  (SID_NAME=FRUIT)
(ORACLE_HOME=C:\Oracle\Ora92)  # change this to YOUR oracle home
  (PROGRAM=hsodbc)
)1c. Stop and restart the listener.
2. Machine 'O'
2a. File '$ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/tnsnames.ora' contains the following fragment . . . (replace 'machine_g_ip_address' with the real IP address or DNS name of machine 'G'):
JELLY =        # you may need to add a domain name suffix - ask your DBA
  (DESCRIPTION=
    (ADDRESS_LIST=
      (ADDRESS=
        (PROTOCOL=TCP)
(HOST= machine_g_ip_address )   # Put DNS or IP address of Machine 'G' in here
        (PORT=1521)
    (CONNECT_DATA=(SID=FRUIT))
    (HS=OK)
)2b. Create a database link
CREATE DATABASE LINK custard
CONNECT TO "home\tangt"
IDENTIFIED BY taktangspassword
USING 'jelly';I'm not sure whether you need specify the CONNECT TO and IDENTIFIED BY clauses.
2c. Get a listing
SELECT table_name
FROM all_tables@custard;At this point, the Oracle database on machine 'G' will see the '@custard' and consult its list of database links for one called 'custard'. It sees the one created in step 2b and uses the USING clause 'jelly' as a service name.
It looks up this service name 'jelly' in its local tnsnames.ora, and find the one created in step 2a. From this it extracts the SID 'Fruit' and the address (host/port). It opens a connection to that host/port, which happens to be machine 'G', and asks for a connection to the 'Fruit' SID.
The listener on machine 'G' consults its local listener.ora list for an entry for the 'Fruit' SID, and finds the one created in step 1c. It looks in the ORACLE_HOME for the 'hsodbc' binary (listed as PROGRAM= ), and runs it, passing it the SID 'Fruit' as a parameter.
The hsodbc program starts up and looks for an initialisation file 'initFruit.ora' set up in step 1b, for the Data Source Name specified by 'HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO=' ('SPONGE'). Then the hsodbc binary opens up an ODBC connection to the DSN 'SPONGE'.

  • How do I connect to a Sybase database from Crystal?

I have never tried to connect to Sybase data before and I am having difficulty figuring out how.  I am using CR XIR2 from my desktop and trying to connect to what I am told is a Sybase database (voicemail system).  I believe Sybase vers 12.5, but not entirely sure yet.  Postings on the forum and other sites appear to be directed toward sdk developers or other development and were not helpful.  Most of what I am reading points toward an Adaptive Server® Enterprise (ASE) ODBC Driver by Sybase.  However, I was told that was not true but the person promising to forward the information never came through. Are there additional drivers I need to install or can someone point me in the right direction?  Thanks!

    Hi Wendy,
    32-bit NATIVE DRIVERS
CRDB_P2SSYB10.DLL is the native driver for Sybase ASE.  It is used with Sybase ASE 12.5
NOTE:  The native driver for Sybase ASE cannot be used to connect to Sybase ASA (Adaptive Server Anywhere) or Sybase ASIQ (Adaptive Server IQ).  Sybase ASA and Sybase ASIQ include their own ODBC drivers as part of their installation package.  These drivers provide the only means of connecting to Sybase ASA and Sybase ASIQ databases.
    I hope this helps you.

  • Connecting 9i database from 10g OEM

Does anyone know how you would connect to a 9i database from 10g OEM?

If you want to manage a 9i environment just as if this was a 10g environment, it is not possible with the regular EM DB Control console. First of all this console is setup on a per oracle instance basis, so in the event you had a 10g Console configured this is exclusively to mange the database it is attached to.
On the other hand, you can setup db 10g Grid control, this way, by properly installing and configuring a grid agent in the target node, you can monitor and manage the 10g database. You should keep in mind that even if the 9i database is visible from the 10g grid control console, it doesn't mean the 10g features will be availabe, such as ADDM or some other advisors. If you want to monitor performance you must configure the regular Statspack available in 9i.
EM Grid Control can manage databases starting from 8.1.7.4.0

  • Connecting oracle 8.x from 10g

    Dear sir,
i am accessing oracle 8.1.5 database from oracle 10g sql plus. I am getting ORA-03134: Connections to this server version are no longer supported.
    Is their any solution?
    Thanks.

if you have no option to upgrade the 8.1.5 database you can set up an 8.1.7.4 database as a man in the middle, effectivly you link from 10g->8.1.7.4->8.1.5 create views in the 8.1.7.4 database for all the objects you want to acces in the 8.1.5 database.
the best solution is to upgrade to a supported version, although I know this isn't always a viable option in the short term.

Select the operation:Upgrade Oracle BI RPD and Web Catalog.
Step by Step, and the upgrade completed successfully.
3.Open the RPD online using the Admintool succefully.
4.But when I Login the BI and view the dashboard with the 10g's user (Administrator),the page appear the error "*Unable to Sign In . An invalid User Name or Password was entered.* "
5.Then I Try to Regenerating User GUIDs
    1. Update the FMW_UPDATE_ROLE_AND_USER_REF_GUIDS parameter in NQSConfig.INI:
    a. Open NQSConfig.INI for editing at:
    b. ORACLE_INSTANCE/config/OracleBIServerComponent/coreapplication_obisn
    c. Locate the FMW_UPDATE_ROLE_AND_USER_REF_GUIDS parameter and set it to YES, as follows:

    4. cd ORACLE_HOME/admin/instancen/bin
    5. ./opmnctl stopall
    6. ./opmnctl startall
    7. Set the FMW_UPDATE_ROLE_AND_USER_REF_GUIDS parameter in NQSConfig.INI back to NO.
Important: You must perform this step to ensure that your system is secure.
    8. Update the Catalog element in instanceconfig.xml to remove the UpdateAccount GUIDs entry.

    Hi,
if your using oracle db please make sure your db settings and tnsnames.oRA settings
also try you please try below troubleshooting steps:
    1) please check latest error message and find the root cause,
    presentation catalog log path:
    obiee installed Drive:\Oracle\Middleware\instances\instance1\diagnostics\logs\OracleBIPresentationServicesComponent\coreapplication_obips1\sawlog0.txt file
    also check it nqserver.log file
oracle bi server log path ref:
    obiee installed Drive:\Oracle\Middleware\instances\instance1\diagnostics\logs\OracleBIServerComponent\coreapplication_obis1\nqserver.log
2)can you try to login RPD,EM and console by using your weblogic a/c then try to login with some other user.
if its not working then try to delete that users from catlog and check it Check OPMN services are running state.
    e.x:

I'm not sure what you're doing is supported.
You are taking a 10g database and restore and recover it using 11g software.
I think you are allowed to do that with 10g software only.

  • Connect to MS SQL server from OWB on Linux platform

    Hi,
I want to connect to MS SQL server through OWB, on Linux platform.
I suppose I would use JDBC driver, and Heterogeneous services. Is that possible?
I did not see anything on JDBC driver for MS SQL server for Linux platform from Oracle.
Also, I was wondering is Oracle Gateway 10g for Linux a way to connect to MSSQL server?
    Any leads would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Ani

    Hi,
This quite an actual topic for myself, so I decided to take some time to collect some information.
    Start at:
    * Oracle Generic Connectivity and Oracle Transparent Gateway - http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/gateways/gateways_fov.html
You can use the free Heterogenous Services component named Generic Connectivity for connecting to SqlServer over ODBC. You will need to find (or purchase?) a third-party ODBC driver for SqlServer for Linux, e.g. from www.datadirect.com. Setting this up will allow you to define a databaselink to the SqlServer. Open Gateways implements a limited set of the oracle SQL, so you will have to find out what is possible and what not.

    * Generic Connectivity Available on Linux x86 with 10g - https://metalink.oracle.com/metalink/plsql/showdoc?db=NOT&id=261726.1
You can also use the Transparent Gateway for SqlServer (HS), which is about EURO 12000 per computer(!). This gives you a full implementation of Oracle SQL and you can access the SqlServer like it was Oracle.
You can also install Microsofts JDBC drivers into Oracle's JVM, and connect through JDBC to SqlServer. This is however not supported by Oracle, but it will work. See:
    * What is required for a Java Stored Procedure to connect to a SQL Server Database? - https://metalink.oracle.com/metalink/plsql/ml2_documents.showDocument?p_database_id=NOT&p_id=276167.1

As noted above, this is a warning, not an error. Pre-create the tablespace and assign necessary tablespace privileges on the target database if you do not want to see the warning message.

Also, does anyone know how to determine the location (full path) of the unixODBC driver manager ?
    Please assist if you can...thx.
    Edited by: user601798 on Oct 15, 2012 3:37 PM

Let me start with the unixODBC driver:
There's no generic location as it depends which package you've used to install the UnixODBC driver manager or how you compiled it from scratch. I commonly prefer to compile it from scratch as this offers me to install it to any location I like.
If you're not sure where it is located, you could perform a search on your machine looking for libodbc.so. Then cross check it with "file <location>/libodbc.so" to see the lib is a 64bit library.
So let's assume in the /usr/lib64 you found the libodbc.so library, then the setting
    HS_FDS_SHAREABLE_NAME=/usr/lib64/libodbc.so
is correct. Else you need to adopt the parameter.
Next step is to check out which unixODBC version is installed. That's commonly done by calling "odbcinst -j".
Looking now ta the gateway init file there's a parameter HS_NLS_NCHAR set to UTF-8. UnixODBC is commonly compiled with UCS2 support, so please change it to HS_NLS_NCHAR=UCS2
Could you also please post the content of the odbc.ini file "more /etc/odbc.ini"?
    Thanks,
    Klaus
