Content Aware Using Wrong Background

Hi Guys
I'm trying to animate someone moving their arm. I used the pen tool to copy the arm to a new layer (left image) then used the pen tool again to cut out where the original was. I clicked "fill", "content aware" to fill in the hole, which should be a girl's blouse but the content aware fills the space with parts of her face and hair (right image), which isn't anywhere near where the fill is. Am I doing something wrong or have I overlooked something obvious?

Many thanks, Trevor. I tried your suggestion, which is useful to know. The result is better than above but if it was for a job of work I'd have to cut, paste and clone. Perhaps there isn't enough distinction between the area to be replaced and potential background for CA to work (normally I've had situations with definate edges and shapes). I'm using CS5; do you know if it is addressed in CS5.5?
Happy New Year!

gnome-keyboard-applet always uses white color as a background, even when panel's color is not white.
(Or, maybe, not exactly white, but it's clearly different from panel's color)
    WTF?

It seems that this is the problem with theme. I'm using gnome-human-theme from AUR.
With other murrine themes it's OK. Does somebody know where in gtkrc is the color value, which is responsible for that?

  • Error Stating "Not enough source pixels" when using content aware fill

I am trying to use content aware fill on a JPG photo. Am getting an error saying that I do not have enough source pixels. What am I doing wrong?

R_Kelly, Sorry I am late in getting back with you, have been out of town on business. I think I found out what I was doing wrong. I created a duplicte background layer and had not check off sample both layers. Corrected this and my problem has gone away.
Thanks for your interest and help.

  • Using content aware with a new layer

I am trying to use content aware with a new layer which i have made a smart object but when I select fill it is greyed out. why?.

CAF doesn't have a Sample all layers option, and needs source pixels to work on.  The best you can do is select those parts of the background layer that you are happy to be sampled from, and copy them to a new layer and use CAF on that layer.  This prevents gaps in the landscape being filled with a foregrounsd subject's head!
You can then add a layer mask to that layer to the new layer to use only those parts you need.

  • Using Content Aware Fill in Photoshop_CS6

Hi.  What do I do when the Content-Aware Fill does not totally remove image?

Content Aware Fill (CAF) is a great feature, but sometimes it needs a bit of help.  Make your selection as tight as you can to the area you want to remove.  A good way to do this is to use Quick select tool with Select > Modify > Expand
But CAF can still get it wrong, using source pixels you don't want in the fill - like putting a persons head in the sky!  To prevent this happening make a rough selection that includes the area you want to remove, plus the areas you want used in the fill. Copy that to a new layer, and use CAF on that layer.

  • Content-aware fill with multi-colored background?

I've got a webpage footer to edit and I don't have the .psd file so I'm trying to use content-aware to take out an unwanted part.  Problem is, the background isn't one solid color and the area where I'm making the edit has a diffinitive color change...it's an actual line dividing the footer into two sections.  So, whenever I do the content aware fill it doesn't keep that line or the colors the way they "should" be.
Is this a situation where having the .psd file is a must?
    Thanks for your help!

I used the lasso tool to select first one colour area.  selected the Brush tool so I could Alt click on the background colour, and Alt backspace to fill the selection.   Then I inverted the selection (ctrl Shift i).  Used the lasso with the ALT key to remove the red area from the selection.  Resampled the other background colour, and Alt backspace to fill.
I did wonder if there was more going on in background because the tiny graphic you uploaded has some artefacts and I was not sure if they were supposed to be there, but a simple graphic like that is an easy thing to create from scratch.   When I have to include a logo in magazine artwork, and only have a horrible little sample that I couldn't bare to put on the page, I enlarge it to a useful size, and use it to trace a nice, new, clean graphic from scratch.

Using the content aware move tool, I want to move an item from one image to another image but it does not seem to work. I think I need two layers on one document so how do I do this

    Good day!
A simple Paste does not work for you?
It should place the clipboard content as a new Layer which you can then move around.
If there is any chance that the elements need to be scaled, rotated etc. I would prefer to place them as Smart Objects (File > Place …) and do the masking that is specific to the images themselves in those.

  • Using content aware fill in photomerge

I have three images (TIFF files total size about 240MB) that I want to create a panoramic from. I use photomerge in CS5. All works well (in 64 bit) but when I choose the content aware fill option an error message comes up (see image). I have 4GB Ram memory on my 3.06 Ghz Intel Core Duo Processor. The message that it could not complete the fill because there is not enough memory should not happen. My system fits all the requirements to run CS5. Is this a bug in the adobe software? Is there someone with expertise on this that can advise me?
    Much appreciated

    Chris:
Perhaps you can help me with a somewhat related problem.  I can't get the following Commands to operate in 64 bit, i.e., Photomerge, Merge to HDR and Load into Photoshop Layers.  They work fine in 32 bit despite the fact that you're limited to only a moderate amount of RAM in 32 bit (1470).  When I'm in 64 bit mode, the amount of RAM I've allocated is 5348.  I'm working on a Quad Core Mac Pro with a whole 1 TB hard drive dedicated to as a scratch disk.  This doesn't make sense to me that when you're throwing more capacity at the process is when the problem arises.  What I consistently get is a dialog box stating "Photoshop Quite Unexpectedly."

  • White lines using Quick Selection Tool in conjunction with the Content Aware Fill.

When using quick selection tool in conjunction with the content aware fill i get a white line where the image join is.
How do i stop this from happening?
Basically, i need the select tool to 'over select' into the next photo so its a seamless fills.
This isn't a complex seletion, its a photomerge with blank, white areas that i am filling in using content away fill.

  • Content-aware move cursor should reflect use of Shift- or Alt-

It appears that I can modify the content-aware selection using familiar techniques: Hold the Shift key to add areas to the selection, hold the Alt key to remove areas from the selection.  I think it would help if the cursor changed, much as it does with the regular lasso: Add a plus or minus sign.

You can use any of the selection tools to make the initial selection.  Then use the Move tool to drag to new location.
Although your point does sound valid to me.

  • Content Aware on Panorama

I was very excited to see the content-aware sneak peek video, where Photoshop automatically filled in the edges of the panorama photo by just selecting the empty space. I was very anxious to give it a go, but was disappointed with the results, or lack thereof.
I stitched together 7 photos that I took and merged the layers. I had to merge the layers because it would not allow me to use the magic wand tool when there were 7 linked layers. When I select the empty space and press delete, nothing happens.
I have noticed if I "Layer by Copy" on other pictures, content-aware doesn't come up as an option on the copied layer. So, I'm guessing my problem with the panoramic picture is that I merged the layers?
Does anyone have ay suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong? He makes it look soo easy in the video.
    Thanks!

Layer-Flatten to "merge the layers", select the edges, then use the Delete key.  The key here is for the image to be the Background layer.  Upon pressing the Delete key it will pop up a menu asking you how you want to fill the parts you have selected, with Content Aware being the default.
You can also bring up the fill dialog when deleting on a bona fide layer by pressing Shift + Backspace (i.e., the Delete key at the upper-right of the main part of your keyboard).

  • Content Aware unavailable

I am new to PS and was working on the lasso tool for removing unwanted objects.  I first used the Content Aware in the edit/fill menu but then after experimenting with background as fill, I could no longer access Content Aware.  How can I find that again?

    Wrong forum.

  • Content aware delete key

Started using PS CS5 few days ago, still playing around with the new features, but there is one that I can't figure it out why it was changed, the way the delete (or clear command for that matter) works. Now we have to use "command+delete" keys to just clear a section, or go another step when using just the delete key, to chose which one would you like, foreground or background color, pattern, etc. kind of a weird I would say. The content aware should be "command+delete", and keep the delete key along, I've used for more than 10 years and it worked fine.
Anyway to bring the delete key behavior back to what it was?

I agree, this is very annoying. I think the content aware team is wrong; most people are far more likely to want to fill the background layer with a particular color than work destructively on the background layer with content-aware fill. As for people not knowing about the new content-aware technology without this change in UI behavior, that is plain crap. Give me a break. Who is going to spend hundreds of dollars on the upgrade and not know about the flagship new features?

  • Blurry Content Aware fill

I hope someone can give me advice to get a better result with my image. (PS CS6, Windows 8)
I was trying to remove a horse from an image using content aware fill.  Every time the filled area is blurry and you can see the outlines very clearly. Here are the steps I took:
On copy of background layer roughly select the area to be filled with the lasso tool (settings Feather 0 px, Anti-alias unchecked or checked, makes no difference)
Edit-fill-Content Aware, Opacity 100%, Mode Normal
I can't remember Content Aware fill giving me blurry results before, and wonder what I'm doing wrong.
I tried using the patch tool, but that gives me a blurred edge around the patched area (no matter what the adaptation setting is).

Dag, I wonder if that would happen?  Doesn't CAF try to make an inteligent best guess at where to draw the source pixels?  It would be helpful to see a screen grab of the entire workspace, but I'm thinking something very wrong there.
A trick you can do when CAF is sourcing from unwanted areas is to make rough selection of the area to be filled, along with the areas you are happy to be drawn from.  Copy that selection to a new layer, and run CAF on that layer.
But upload a full screen grab for sure.
