Content server on a VPS - yes or no ?

Hi,
im looking at the following scenario for a DRM encryption and hosting service for a client of mine:
short term: serving 150 books per year with 5000 copies each
long term: serving 1000 books per year with 20,000 copies per book per year.
i'm a freelance web developer/system admin with many years of experience in installing and running MS servers.
I would like to try and setup this solution using Adobe Content Server,
question is, can this be done on a VPS (virtual private server) for cost effective and time saving purposes.
if so, what is the level of control i need over the server ? what do i need to ask from my hosting provider ?
i have the system requirements for the basic stuff like RAM, Disk space etc.
bottom line, would you recommend this kind of approach ? or is it recommended to own the hardware ?

So long as your VPS has a LAMP or WAMP setup in addition to Apache Tomcat installed you should be ok. We have a windows WAMP setup and Apache tomcat installed on one server.

If the documents are stored in DMS with Content Server as the repository, you should be able to access them using the DMS connector to KM. This is a business package which, when installed, exposes document stored in DMS to KM as a KM repository. Then you can browse it like any other KM repository. There are a lot of posts in this forum and others about the DMS connector.
You can also try to enable WebDAV if you Content Server is using a MaxDB database.

Content Server 6.40 on deletion

Hello,
Our content server is a 6.40. It is installed on a Sparc Solaris 64-bits.
It works fine except that it crashes each time we delete an document.
Sap Support has asked me to reinstall apache 2.0.59.
The problem is still exists.
Then they have told me that apache2.0.x is not supported on Solaris10 64-bits.
I have then installed an apache1.3.42 with the sapcs apache module for apache 1.3.x.
But it still crashes.
While working with the sap supports on that, I would be very interested by your feedback if you could provide it on the following points.
1. Have you encountered similar problem with the Sap CS?
2. Are you deleting document from your Content Server?
If yes, which OS are you using?

Good day, I need help regarding content profiles for content server, I want to know if I can create a specific metadata filed related to specific area such as HR (empno, emp name, department, job title....etc), I don't want to make all the required fileds available (content id, type, security group,..etc
How can I manipulate fields in the Rules? and then attached these rules to profiles? and what is the use of the trigger field within the profiles?where will it be important?
can I customize the check-in page adding fonts, colors, whatever fields, images as well as metadata fields? if there is a document for this I will be grateful.

How can I manipulate fields in the Rules? By selecting a metadata filed you may assign some dynamic value, hide them or make then read only.

DMS KM Repository: direct access to Content Server?

our SAP System is running in another network (outsourcing, connected via WAN) then the Content Server (LAN). Portal and TREX are located in the same network as the Content Server.
During indexing for the CM repository the content are requested via rfc - so the KPRO read the document from our network to the R/3 system and sends it back to the portal:

Yes, but the KPRO (where most of these settings are stored) supports a URL based content retrieval. This is also the default behavior of the DMS/DVS. For Example TREX, gets the list of attributes and a URL for the content pointing to the Content Server. This also works for WebDocuments (Web Access to DMS from R/3, based on BSP). But it seems the KM Repository sends a full content request via RFC...

They would have no need to u201Ccheckout/checkinu201D documents in the field, but would need view access or print access from their field device via a work order wrote against the equipment or F.L. to which the documents would be attached. I envision a separate small group of users that would actually u201Cmanageu201D the documents themselves such as u201Ccheck out/update/check back inu201D to the separate server location where the file(s) are located.
I understand in principle (I think) the DMS storage, but again, if I select u201Ckprou201D (currently unselected for my document type) you make the following comments: u201C2. Content Server in WebCenter Spaces 11g

I configured both WebCenter 11g and Oracle Content Server to use OID. I created a connection in WebCenter using CIS Type as Socket and gave the hostname/port along with other settings but in WebCenter Spaces I still can't see the repository and it it says Document Service is unavailable. Any idea what might be missing as I followed the documentation but it's not very clear.

Yes it is Spaces and the connection is configured on Enterprise Manager. I manage to solve the issue as I didnot create any Roles in Content Server for the Groups that exists in Active Directory. But this in-turn started giving other errors that I am not able to figure out.
Now when I log in with any Active Directory user into WebCenter Spaces and try to include a Document Service it gives me the below errr:
OracleJSP error: java.io.FileNotFoundException: <p> Set the init-param <code> debug_mode</code> to "true" to see the complete exception message.Now if I log-in with weblogic user that is not part of Active Directory it does let me add the Document Service can upload documents etc. but won't let me create the pages while creating page it says user weblogic doesnot exist. So basically wit active directry users I can create page but not use document service and with weblogic user it's the other way round. Any ideas what I am doing wrong as the documentation is not even clear either and how can i solve this issue.
Is there any good document out there that does explain all this.

Use of a content server to store attachments in SRM

We already have an SRM system in production storing many large attachments on table BBPCONT.
We are facing huge performance problems because:
       a) SRM holds the whole file content in memory during document upload.
       b) During the process of saving the document, SRM creates one record in VBDATA table for each row that will be stored in BBPCONT. For large files, this process of inserting data at VBDATA takes a very long runtime.
I have two questions:
   1) Anyone already handled this situation ?
   2) We are thinking about using an external content server to store attachments. My concern is related to the attachments already stored at BBPCONT. Will these documents be available to the user or it is necessary to build conversion programs to move attachments from BBPCONT to the external server ?

1) Yes, but we anticipated this performance issue by switching to an external Content Server. I also remember one performance issue: when you are uploading an attachement in your session, the system will store it in a temporary table BBP_TRANSCONTENT (the content is not stored in memory). It will be definitively stored in BBPCONT only if the user saves the purchasing document (otherwise we pollute the final table).
2) You have to "migrate" old documents from BBPCONT to the new Content Repository (ex:Content Server). There is a report for that : RSIRPIRL.

Oracle Content Server Security with Web Center Suite

I've configured Oracle Content Server (UCM) to integrate with WebCenter Spaces (WCS). The document service works on a user's personal page but fails on group spaces and when I troll the logs I find the following error:

Caused By: javax.jcr.ItemNotFoundException: Unable to get folder info for dCollectionID = 288463355527000401
Caused By: oracle.stellent.ridc.protocol.ServiceException: Unable to display virtual folder information. Cannot read folder.
I am using a socket connection, not web or SSL.
UCM is on an external server and not on the same machine as WCS.
UCM is 11g and WCS 11g patchset 2. Yes I know UCM 11g is not "officially" supported to integrate with WCS until patchset 3, but others have gotten it to work, so I'd like to do the same.
On UCM machine OHS (from web tier utilities) is installed and comfigured.
httpd.conf edited as per requirement.
config.cfg and intradoc.cfg edited as per requirement.
Admin user on UCM has admin and sysmanager rights.
I think this may be because the UCM uses the internal default LDAP first (i.e. it is first on the list of providers) because it does not have an admin user in the external LDAP. So even though in the service connection I specify the UCM admin i think it must also be able to find this user in the external LDAP on the WCS side.
I am currently having trouble figuring out how to give an external LDAP user the same permissions on UCM as that which the default internal LDAP admin user has, so that I can use that external LDAP user in the services connection setup instead.
With WCS under the Fusionware EM is simply added an external LDAP user to the domain for the webcenter section, but for UCM I'm not sure where the appropriate place is to add such a user.
I am also not 100% sure if this is actually the issue.

Hi, Thanks for response.
1. I have created default webcenter project application.
2. Created content repository connection using File System..
3. Created new page using default Template.
4. Drag drop Document List Viewer TaskFlow and setup the content server connection.
5. After running the application , i can see list of documents link in page..
6. But When I click on any link ..browser automaically close..
7.On server console I am getting above mentioned error..
I am using jdev 11.1.1.5 and running on internal weblogic server...

TREX indexing on content server performance

Hi guys,
Our Portal is integrated with SAP CRM (using webdav) that manages documents stored in SAP content server. We use TREX to index these documents such that users in Portal can search for these documents. Currently we're evaluating the performance of indexing and searching, thus if we have a heavy load of documents to index, would it affect the SAP CRM/Content server that is the document repository? (such as memory consumption, performance, etc..)

Trex install on content server

is it possible to search with trex in sap content server?
At the moment content server and trex are installed on the same server. R/3 is using the content server. And i successfull made an rfc connection to trex. What are the next steps for trex to search in the content server?
