Contextual menu from desktop

I noticed an unusual, but useful, contextual menu from my desktop today. It said "Clean Up" as it pertained to the alignment of icons on the desktop. I had first tried to put my dock on the right side of my screen. I haven't used it there because the desktop icons were always behind it! Well, when I tested this new "Clean Up" it straightened up the icons and bumped them over away from the Dock!
So - where did this mysterious "Clean Up" option come from? I have no idea! Anyone? The other login on my Mac doesn't have it.

Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu and enter ~/Library/Contextual Menu Items/ as the path; in addition, check that the view settings for the desktop are the same on both accounts.

  • How can you disable "set desktop picture" from the finder contextual menu

I teach high school.  And MUST find a way to keep my students from changing their desktops.
First I basically got rid of Firefox when it had that feature in the Tiger days.
Then for Leopard I had to create dummy "locked" Safari Desktop Picture files for all my user accounts so the kids couldn't use Safari to set their desktop pictures.
NOW I discover (maybe this was here before) Snow Leopard lets you change the desktop right from the Finder itself!  Just right click on any image file and the contextual menu  will give them the option to "set desktop picture".
Come on Apple, every educator I know has complained about what a distraction and constant battle images are for students who use computers.  While not all students are inappropriate, quite a few are...meaning no one can be allowed the privilege.  Why is this such a huge battle to try and lock down?  Please allow Parental Controls or Server managed preferences to keep our students from being able to change their desktop pictures, ever, at all, from anywhere or any program.
Does anyone know if this is even possible?

The only way (I have found) to shut down using Safari's "Use Image as a Desktop Picture" feature is to create a bunch of blank documents that the users have no permission to change (i.e. set permission to only allow, say YOU to read it and no access to write to it for anyone)
Create a number of these blank documents and rename them
    Safari Desktop Picture.jpg
    Safari Desktop Picture.tiff
    Safari Desktop Picture.gif
    Safari Desktop Picture.jpeg
    Safari Desktop Picture.png
(you get the point....come up with as many .3 extensions of photo files that you can think of)
Put these locked and unchangeable files into the following directory of each of your student accounts
    Macintosh HD/Users/~User Name/Library/Safari/
What this does is create a bunch of dummy files that will "block" Safari (or the system or user) from trying to replace them.  Even though the right click comman will still be there, Safari will not be able to put the picture in the correct part of the system for it to be used as a Desktop Picture.

  • Accidently removed "Contextual Menu Item" from /Library

    Hello
I was testing an application called iTrash during which it seems like i have deleted the "Contextual Menu Items " folder as its no longer present and i can no longer right-click anywhere on my Snow Leopard. I don't have any backups. Can someone tell me how i can recover that folder or if i can download the files needed to have in that folder (just the original ones) to regain the Right-click again?
Trash is empty so i can't recover from there. Can someone please help

Normally, that folder's empty. Just recreate it. However, it has nothing to do with right-clicking and getting contextual items. Something else is amiss. Check System Preferences->Mouse and ensure that you haven't disabled the right click. BTW, there isn't any Archive & Install in Snow Leopard, just install.

  • Dictionary Contextual Menu Bug from within Preview or Skim

Seems like there is a bug with the way 10.5 handles pdf's and the contextual dictionary menu item. Highlighting a word and selecting the 'Lookup in Dictionary' contextual menu item seems to be unreliable at best. Most of the time, this feature refuses to work in either Preview.app or Skim. Any ideas? BTW i currently use Dictionary with both the standard Oxford dictionary and Wikipedia functions.

The "Mail Document" option in preview works fine for me...dunno what the problem could be, but perhaps if you removed the preferences file for preview from your "~/Library/Preferences/" folder, that might help resolve it. Faulty preferences files are causing folks a lot of application misbehaviors.

  • Searching from contextual menu doesn't shows the same panel as searching from Google homepage

When you select some text and press right click there is a option in the contextual menu which allows you to perform a search using Google in another tab. For some reason the displayed page is not the same as you search the same in Google homepage, there are some panel who are missing; images, videos, blogs, forum, tec. Is there a way to put them back the missing Google panels?

  • "Toast It" wont go from contextual menu

I have completely removed the app and then removed the toastit plugin from various Library/contextual menu items folders on my system (at root and user level), yet the toast it menu item simply won't budge. i have rebooted my machine several times.
    please advice…
    Neerav

    Hi, thanks for your reply.
I dont even remember the version. the apple service center installed it when they were checking my super drive. i just deleted the crap to trash.
the reason i posted here is because i googled before and realized that a plugin needs to be removed from the 'contextual menu items' folder. and it stays there even after doing that.

  • Services menu missing from contextual menu

i think my services menu is broken. it doesn't show up at all in the contextual menu and from the application menu if i have say a pdf selected the only thing i see listed is 'new email with attachment' and services preferences. anyone else have this problem.

Yes, can report the exact same issue as well.
The loss of the services and automator menus from a contextual click is a real annoyance, and I really shouldn't have come to the Apple discussion forums to find this answer.
My scenairo is that I'm an entourage user for corporate mail and services (Sorry, can't stand the in-built clients for this purpose, they irritate me to no end). I had an automator action setup to easily create a new email with the selected items from the finder with a simple right click.
To do this now requires a whole new way of working, and to get back to some semblance of what I had before, as documented here, you have to de-select then re-select all the services in the services preference pane.
And while we're on the subject - why oh why can't we set the default program which email actions/services are sent to for existing services.
This is a real pain, and shows a distinct lack of polish in the end use expeirence for snow leopard, sigh.

  • A way to change right click contextual menu?

Is there a way to change the right click contextual menu, so the first item is open in tabs?  I use tabs more than windows, and in Chrome, the tabs option is 1st and not 2nd.

    Hi chevysales,
The logic is wrong. Go into Network Magic Options. On the General Tab, make sure that the following are not checked:
Do not add Network Magic Folders icon to Open/Save dialogs
Do not add commands to Explorer shortcut menus
Click OK and reboot the computer and see if gone.
I am running Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3 on my Wireless Computer and I checked the Right-click menu and don't have the options, when they aren't checked.

  • Can't open apps with contextual menu, or dragging onto dock icon

I've recently reinstalled Tiger and updated successfully with the 10.4.11 combo installer.
I've discovered that when, for example, I use the contextual menu to open a jpeg with Photoshop CS, nothing happens. If I try to drag it onto the Photoshop icon in the dock, the app will open but the file won't.
Double clicking the file opens it in Preview (default), but I sometimes want to do more than view it in preview - I want to edit it in PS. I can only open it from within PS. Also, when using Iphoto, even when I select external editor it won't open in Photoshop.
This is a new quirk and I've never had the problem before. I'd appreciate any suggestions of how I can solve this. Many thanks, Karen

Before I start trashing things, just to play it safe ... what are the consequences/downside of getting rid of those folders?
Just move them to the Desktop incase we need for some unknown reasin to put them back.
Should I just move them out one by one to see if I can isolate the problem?
Yes, you could do that, but... I think some prefs help rebuilding other prefs if present.
I have created a new "test user" - I guess I should log out/log in to see if the problem is still there before doing any throwing away of prefs, right?
    Yep!

  • Open kindle from desktop/ click open on the icon and device will not open

Having trouble when i try to open kindle icon in my desktop. any suggestions?

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
              Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder—not just its contents—to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Restart the computer. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. Any custom stationery that you created may be lost. Ask for instructions if you want to preserve that data. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Contextual Menu has VANISHED

I always tend to keep up to date with the Apple provided updates so I am running iPhoto 6.0.6 (Build 322). Just over the last couple of days I have noticed that my Contextual Menu option has dissappeared. I can't right click on any photo at all (well I can of course but it doesn't do anything). I use this function a lot for locating an image I want to access from other software.
By the way it doesn't work with 'ctrl-click' either. Just NO menu appears.
    Any ideas anyone?

    Alec:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Since it works in the other account here's a method to find out if there's another preference file in your library that may be the culprit.
    Trouble Shooting Preferences
Go to HD/Users/Your_name/Library. Move the Preferences folder (in its entirety) to the Desktop and make a second copy of it so you have Copy A and B. Now try the the process again and determine if problem is fixed.
If the problem IS fixed, then go to the new Prefs folder that the OS will have created and open it up.
Open Copy B on the Desktop and select all of the items inside. Drag them into the open new library folder. When the Copy window comes up check the Apply to All check box and then click on the Don't Replace button as seen here. That will keep the new files created and bring back all of the others.
If the problem is NOT fixed, trash the new Prefs folder and move the intact Copy A folder back to the Library folder .
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Mighty Mouse Secondary Button doesn't display contextual menu

Is my wireless MM working correctly?
I have the right click button set to secondary in system preferences.
If I right click on a link in Safari it opens that link in the same web page. However in Apps such as iPhoto, Pages or on the desktop there is no response (other than in iPhoto the picture is 'selected').
If I left click and press CTRL at the same time I get a contextual menu.
The contextual menu on the desktop reads "New folder, New burn folder, Get Info - change desktop background, show view options - toast it - automater, enable folder actions, configure folder actions.
As far as I remember since buying the computer in Dec 06 the right button has never shown these menus.
    I have Toast v 7.1.2
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    jon

Perhaps an explanation of how the MM works is in order and will help. I have to admit that the MM takes some getting used to and a bit of hand coordination. I got the hang of it quickly and have no issues with it.
The exterior of the MM is touch sensitive. It can "feel' your fingers on the exterior and interprets what it senses to determine what it thinks you want to do. I rest my hand on the MM with thumb and ring finger in the area of the side buttons and index finger to the left of the scrollball and the middle finger to the right of the scrollball. The MM is configured in System Preferences/Keyboard & Mouse/Mouse with the Primary click on the left (with my index finger) and the Secondary click on the right (with my middle finger.)
If you click with the index finger to the left of the scrollball, you get a Primary click, with or without the middle finger touching the MM. To get a Secondary click, click with the middle finger to the right of the scrollball, but the index finger must be lifted from the MM.
I use a rocking of my two fingers. When I Primary click my middle finger goes up. When I Secondary click my index finger goes up. (I never could master the side button squeeze, so I turned them off in System Prefs.)

  • "Run as..." contextual menu?

Is it possible to add "run as.." to a contextual menu?
This to be logged in as a regular user, but to run a certain application as an admin. I know this can be done through the terminal app, but wondered if it can be performed within the GUI.
    Thanks.

    Hi kajacobs
    Welcome to discussions.
Is it possible to add "run as.." to a contextual menu?
I think that would be possible to write one to do that. If you don't feel like writing one from scratch you could use something like this.
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/mac/16170
You could also put the script (you mentioned Terminal) in a wrapper, either Applescript.app or make an executable.command both of which could be used from the desktop.
If you provide more detail about what you are trying to accomplish, better suggestions could be given.

  • Unusual contextual menu/automator workflow behaviour

    Hey All.
I've been using the contextual menu/ automator workflow function recently. When using the menu the 1st item in the list is "create workflow". When I use this I get a new workflow that already contains one item that opens my desktop folder. If I use the "new" command from the file menu I get a blank document. Any idea what is going on here?
    Nick.

The "Create Workflow" option is a convenience for creating a new workflow based on the items currently selected in the Finder. It's very handy for me.
