Controlling Software Update service - /Library/Software Update too large

We have multiple locations each with their own server that also runs Software Update repositories. One happens to be quite larger than the others, filling up the HD (200GB vs 100GB). Is there a way to trim them down automatically or do I need to manually stop serving up updates?
Thanks!

The Software Update service has been mostly rendered obsolete by the Caching service, which is much more efficient.

  • 10.5.3 update too large for ISP

I have two new 24" iMacs that I'd like to update to 10.5.3 but the updates are larger than my ISP's FAP allows. The nearest Apple store is 80 miles away and they are reluctant to burn disks (previous lack of success they say). I don't really want to drag two desktops to some coffee shop (I'm out in the country and would have to take them about 20 miles) each time there is a new update. All my friends have the same limit from their ISP's.
    Any suggestions?

Thanks folks. The first call was to my ISP who will not accommodate me and as I said I only have one choice of ISP for high speed Internet service or I would have changed a long time ago. (I live in the way out wilds of NM where there is no cable and dial up is below being serious). Apple employees may not understand that some of us live in areas where we don't have much in the way of Internet service. I hope my and others feedback will draw attention to that.
I was hoping for more comments like the one above from someone who has successfully/not successful in used a disk to upgrade since I'm being told that method is risky by my "local" Apple store.
The comment about mentioning future updates wasn't very helpful. I'm not speculating on them but only pointing out that until I find a workable, safe solution this will continue to be a problem. I mention that because Apple Tech support's first preference is for me to haul my two 24" iMacs to the local Apple store (again 160 mile round trip) each time there is an update larger than my ISP allows.

  • IPhoto Library seems far too large

    Hi,
When I first loaded my images into iPhoto I thought what I wanted was to preserve the original file structure i.e. I keep all my images in a 'Digital Photos' folder, then broken down by year and date. So when I imported the library to iPhoto I unchecked +Copy Files To iPhoto Library.+
My iPhoto library seems just as large as my Digital Photos folder. I think now rather than have a separate folder, I'd rather just store the photos in iPhoto and half the disk space. So my two questions are:
    1) If I have a 'referenced library' of aliases which appears to be the case, why is the iPhoto library package so large regardless?
    2) If it were easier to use a managed library (no need for separate photos folder) how could I move all of my photos into iPhoto easily without having to erase my whole library, loosing my events and tags?
    Thanks for your help!

So when I imported the library to iPhoto I unchecked Copy Files To iPhoto Library.
As you probably know from reading this forum this is not a recommended way to use iPhoto - there are many drawbacks and over time it will create problems for you
    1) If I have a 'referenced library' of aliases which appears to be the case, why is the iPhoto library package so large regardless?
the iPhoto library contains an original of the photo (in you case this is just an alias since you are not copying items to the iPhoto library) in the originals folder, a thumbnail (very small) of the photo in the data folder, a copy of the latest modified photo in the modified folder if any edits or modifications have been made to the photo plus a database structure description file (library6.iPhoto) and some other support files - usually small
SInce your iPhoto library is large I assume that you have edited, rotated, cropped or otherwise modified many of your photos.
    2) If it were easier to use a managed library (no need for separate photos folder) how could I move all of my photos into iPhoto easily without having to erase my whole library, loosing my events and tags?
This is the recommended method of operation
TO go from a referenced library which you now have to to a managed library many people have been successful using Alias herder -http://www.rorohiko.com/aliasherder.html
Back up your iPhoto library in case of problems and run alias herder against the library - is will pull the oritinal photos into the library originals folder replacing the aliases and you will be fine if everything goes smoothly
And keep on backing up - it is important for any computer data
And strongly consider getting Old Toad's automator script and regularly backing up the database file, library6.iPhoto in addition to your regular full library backups

  • Advanced ?? Control Reference Update - Too slow.

I have a main VI which controls a bunch of SubVIs. Each of these subVIs
get data from the DAq and generate the plots and intensity graphs. I
use a control reference to display these plots and graphs on my main
VI. This is really slow. When I compare the speed at which the main VI
is updated and the subVI is updated, there is a significant difference.
Is this usually the case or am i missing something ?
    Thx
Kudos always welcome for helpful posts

I agree with tst, your PP VI runs at unlimited speed for no good reason. You should pace it with a small delay so it will release the control to other processes after each iteration.
Also your DAQ part seems inefficient. Why do you configure the DAQ task from scratch, acquire, and close at every iteration? This is way too much work. You should flatten this out to the PP vi. Configure outside the loop on the left and close outside the loop on the right. Place only the ACQ part inside the loop.
Also, place the real terminal of the graph inside the loop and clear it once at the beginning using a local variable. A local variable is always more expensive and less efficient.
I don't understand why you need a timeout event in the main VI, it does not do anything except spin the loop, right? Just delete the timeout event.

  • Aperture 115GB Library...Too Large!

I have an Aperture Library with about 30K photos in it. The file size is 115GB. I have read this forum and done some of the tips and only saved about 10gb (was 125gb). Is there any way that I can get this down to a manageable size? There HAS to be a way to tell it to take all the photos and delete all the versions EXCEPT the final one for each file...

There HAS to be a way to tell it to take all the photos and delete all the versions EXCEPT the final one for each file...
Versions do not need much space. Aperture stores the original master image file - raw or jpeg, just like you imported it, and then it will store the sequence of adjustments done to the image to create the version. This way the versions will only need a few bytes. You could save a bit by deleting the previews of your images, but then you will no longer be able to use your Aperture images in the Media Browser, and some operations may be slower.
To delete the Previews select all images in the "Photos" view and use the command "Photos > Delete Previews". Or reset the size of the previews to a smaller size (Preferences > Previews > Photo Preview Fit within ...)
Also, if you are syncing with iTunes your iPod Photo Cache may be quite large.
iTunes: Understanding the iPod Photo Cache folder
If you no longer sync with iTunes, you may want to delete the Photo Cache.
But in the long run I'd suggest to put your Aperture Library onto an external drive or use a referenced library with most of the original files on an external volume.
115GB is a moderate library size for 30k photos, so there is not much that can be done to reduce the size, unless you are willing to reduce the quality of the originals or to relocate them to an external volume.

  • Aperture crashing - Library too large?

It would be greatly appreciated if someone can give me a few suggestions. I've been editing a wedding in Aperture for about 4 hours when suddenly aperture crashed. Every time I reopen, it opens and looks like it is processing previews and then crashes within 5 seconds. I have run a consistency check and rebuilt the library to no avail.
I am afraid my library has gotten too large and could be contributing to the problem. The library currently weighs in at 139GB. I typically try to keep the library size below 50GB but have been too busy to clean up my system recently. Stupid me. Could this be the problem, and if so, how do I manage my files if I can't open aperture?
    Thanks,
    Ryan

Thanks to everyone for all the help. After speaking with someone at apple, I had to copy my library to an external drive, restore to a new library, check to make sure all the images were there, and then I was able to delete the backup copy. One issue I encountered was that a few thumbnails wouldn't load. After some exploration I found that these were referenced files that had been moved from there original locations and not reconnected with aperture. After relocating the original files, everything works perfectly.
Aside from this being a huge waist of time, everything worked out okay.

  • Old issue re-emerges: "iPod Software is too old" - but update not available

I found this issue discussed in October 2005, but the suggested fix then doesn't seem to work now.
Today, for the first time, I got an error when syncing my iPod, stating that some music could not be synced because my iPod software is too old. Of course, when I click the update button, it says I have the most recent version. If I try syncing again, I get the same error.
    I have iTunes 7.1.1, and iPod software v. 3.1.1
I've even tried restoring the iPod, but when I try that it says that my iPod cannot be found... which of course is nonsense because iTunes was just syncing with it and it's visible in the Devices list.
    Any suggestions?

Some more info on the problem --
Possibly related, possibly not -- the iPod has also been freezing periodically. Usually it happens while starting up or shortly after. If I put the iPod up to my ear, I can hear the drive whir then click and stop, and repeat. I've found that hitting the iPod can sometimes change the sound the drive makes, but I don't think it ever brought the drive back to life. Getting it back from being frozen seems random but does happen. Usually it was by restoring (before this "iPod Software is too old" problem began). This morning, when I plugged it in to check to make sure it saw the model correctly, it took 3 tries to start up (the first two times it brought up the unhappy iPod image, but then immediately went back to the apple and tried again).
I purchased the iPod refurbished from the apple site a little less than a year ago. It's a Click Wheel, B/W screen... I think that's a 4th generation, but I don't want to misrepresent it.
Should I just take it in to the nearest Apple Store and get their genius bar to look at it? Frankly, I'm stumped.

  • "iPod Software is too old" - but update not available

    ITunes v5.0.1
    iPod - v2.3
Attempting to synch between iPod and computer, message:
"You will not be able to copy songs purchased from the ...because your iPod software is too old...get the latest...."
I get the 'latest' (which afaik i already have) and it will not install, package choices are greyed out.
    Help?

I found the solution on the discussion board at macosxhints.com.
You need to launch the iPod updater from inside the updater folder.
Open Applications>Utilities>iPod Software Updater (I had several folders called "iPod Software Updater" with version numbers in it, choose the one without any numbers. The modified date should be the most recent too.) Select the most recent updater in that folder (should be "iPod Updater 2005-09-23"). Double-click on it.
Ignore the screen that pops up with all of the pictures of the iPod models, and click "update" on the other window. Presto.

Basic troubleshooting from the Users Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new). Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

  • Updated now library too large

I just updated to the newest iphone os last night and now the library (photos, music, contacts, apps etc.) is 2.8gigs too large! How did that happen and how can I undo whatever happened? The phone can't complete the sync now, it locks up itunes. Is restore the only option?

Get a large, fast external drive and put your library there, and bring it with you. Also have an up-to-date backup that you leave back at your home or office.

so i actually ended up walking into genius bar today. they couldn't figure out which program was causing the glitch either, but the way they solved it was by resetting all the location service permissions altogether. for those of you who want to know how to do this, navigate to "settings > general > reset > reset location warnings". also fyi, the apple service rep told me the purple location service icon next to each app simply signifies that particular app has requested your location within the past 24 hours, not necessarily that the app is active. hope this helps those with the same problem as i had.  iPhone 4, iOS 4
I will mention that I did not have the problem until I downloaded the new googlemaps, which I have deleted off my iphone.

  • Latest Leopard Update just too large

The latest Leopard update is over 500 MB. This is just too large for those of us who connect via satellite. The update is so large that it throws me into Fair Access restrictions. In addition it doesn't install. It gets hung up for hours in "Configuring Software"
It must be broken up into smaller pieces. There is just no excuse for an update being so large.
Someone from Apple needs t read this forum and fix this. If the update contains something critical for an application or system stability, then I am hosed.

This forum is for troubleshooting Apple Software Update for Windows, a software package for Windows designed to update Apple products that run on Windows, and not related to Mac OS updates.

  • "Ipod software is too old" error with ipod nano

I am having a big problem with my ipod nano. I've been working on it for a week and still have not been able to fix it. I can sync my ipod nano to my mac g4 (running OS X 10.3.9) however in the ipod settings it won't show the version of ipod software and the click buttons to restore the ipod or update it are grayed out. When I connect the ipod I get an error message "Some of the items in the itunes library were not copied to your ipod because your ipod software is too old. Go to Summary tab in ipod preferences and update to get the latest software update."
As mentoined, when I do that the update is not available. I have reset the ipod multiple times, restored it, reformatted the disk etc. With the ipod blank, I discovered it does NOT give this error when I connect it to an older imac g3 (go figure) and that it correctly shows the ipod system information and allows me to update it or restore it from itunes (7.0.2). If I then plug the ipod into the G4 it gives the same error message.
The fact that it works and syncs fine with another mac leads me to believe that it's not the ipod, but my system software on the G4 that is corrupted- there must be a settings file that is bad, I just don't know which one it is. Help!!

Is it possible that you have part of an old iTunes still installed on your computer? If so, take a look at the info I pasted below from the following article:Troubleshooting iTunes installation on Mac OS X
It's possible that clicking the iTunes icon in your Dock or double-clicking an iTunes icon on your desktop could open an older version of iTunes. Open iTunes from the Applications folder to be sure you are opening the right version:
    Double-click your hard disk.
    Double-click the Applications folder.
    Double-click the iTunes icon.
If you notice another copy of iTunes in the Dock after following these steps, here's a way to take care of that:
    Quit iTunes.
Drag the iTunes icon out of the Dock.
Drag the iTunes icon from the Applications folder to the Dock.

  • Some items were not copied because software is too old

I've updated to 7.0.2 and finally decided to brave the waters and sync my iPod--I've been too chicken to sync it at all since 7.0 came out and all of the issues began appearing.
Of course, when I plugged in the iPod, it asked if I wanted to update & install or "download only". I chose to download only so that I could install it later (hoping maybe another firmware would come out before I do). My iPod was still able to sync--which I wasn't sure it would. However, after it finished I received the following message:
"Some of the items in the iTunes library were not copied to the iPod "Michelle's iPod" because your iPod software is too old. Go the to the Summary tab in iPod preferences and click Update to get the latest iPod software update."
I checked my item counts between iTunes and the iPod--there were 35 "music" items that didn't sync and 110 podcasts that didn't sync. This is out of the 500 or so items that the progress window said it was trying to sync from the beginning.
It would sort of make sense if it refused to sync ANYTHING that I had added since before 7.0. But why would it sync some, but not others? None of it is "purchased" from the iTunes Store. It's all either imported CD's, downloaded podcasts, or simply "updated" old items (those whose play count or last played date had changed--or possibly new album art).
Any idea how to figure out the logic behind which items it WILL sync with "old" software and which items it will not?
Maybe I'll be forced to try updating to 1.2 after all! I was really hoping to wait since it sounds like many of the current issues are iPod firmware related instead of iTunes related.
    Any ideas?

The error 48 comes up when syncing. I think I have a fair idea now that there is a problem when attempting to sync contacts or anything else. Initially when setting up the iPod from scratch the iTunes capacity window for the iPod shows audio, other and free space. The other I believe is the essential system software plus the calenders, contacts and notes folders. On set up all files transfer. Every single time when I have clicked on the pane to allow contacts syncing problems begin. The other capacity disappears leaving audio and free space. Syncing is attempted by iTunes but it gives up and the error message 48 appears unable to update.
My solution so far is to disable all syncing when setting the iPod up and dragging files over. Not ideal but it seems to work fingers crossed.
