Convert h.264 to Pro Res

I was having a problem editing h.264 shot on a DSLR....
Some on this forum kindly answered my question suggestiong I convert
the video to pro res.
What is the best way to convert the video to ProRes.
I have edited a sequence and do not want to start over again.
Thanks

Try again…
If you've managed tio edit a h.264 sequence, you've already jumped through some hurdles. Try exporting, You may be lucky.
If that gets weird, change the sequence settings to Pro Res  – either PR422 or PR LT. Then export.
In the future, best practices are to use Log & Transfer, assuming you have intact card.
If you don't, convert the clips in Compressor or MPEG Streamclip. Then bring them into FCP.
Good luck.

Using Media Manager to convert movies to apple pro res,  How can I convert my existing media files  from quicktime movies into apple pro res 422 ?
After they are converted will I have to re-point my fcp project to the converted files?
Thank You for taking time to answer these

    Sorry, I am not following.
You said you have converted them to prores LT & are having this issue, or is it with H264 files in your edit?
How did you convert? using media manager, or compressor?
if you still are using the H264 media that would be the issue.
That is not an editing codec. it is a delivery codec.
The thing to have done would have been to convert to prores before you started editing.
    or did you do that?

  • HOW DO I CONVERT F4VS TO APPLE PRO RES?

Hi, I need to transfer a premiere pro project as a XML to FCP so i plan to convert the files into premiere pro  into Apple prores so they can opened in a Apple Pro Res project in FCP. The files I need to convert are the original MOVs and F4vs so the movs won't be a problem but the I've tried converting the f4Vs in Adobe Media Encoder and it seems to suggest I need FCP installed on my computer to convert them to pro res bu there must be a way of getting F4vs in to FCP. This is a project I'm transferring to be opened on someone elses computer in their FCP so how is this done?
    PLEASE HELP!
I have the apple pro res codec already installed on my computer and downloaded a free trial of Pavtube but when I tried converting a F4v file into prores it said I need Final Cut already installed on my computer so would wondershare say the same thing. Sorry but I just want to be clear so...If I convert all the movie files in my Premiere Project into Apple Pro Res then export that as a XML then send all the individual files along with the XML project file to another computer they would be able to open the XML project all good and fine in FCP7?... There isn't any speed adjusted clips in the project as with those I nested and converted them into f4vs in Media Encoder then reimported them into the Pro project, then there are a few clips that I have adjusted the scale and postion and put on a slight fade on some clips- would those effects transfer to FCP7 ok ?
The project files I used in Pro are-
    Editing Mode: DSLR,
    25fps,
    frame size 1920 x 1080, vertical 16:9,
Pixel Aspect Ratio, Square Pixels (1.0)
    Fields : No Fields(Progressive Scan)
    Sample Rate 48000,
    Video Previews-
Preview File Format I-Frame Only Mpeg
    Codec Mpeg I-frame
So if they open a project in FCP7 with as much of those settings as possible and in Apple Pro Res and then import the XML would that work?
Any advice would be extremely welcome and I'll be very greatful.Cheers
    Simon

Try using MPEG Streamclip. Seems to work for a lot of folks.

  • Convert Alpha graphic to pro res 4444

I can't seem to get this to work. I have some keyable(alpha) animations that I have added sound to and I want to export them as pro res 4444 with alpha and audio and use in other projects. I've used QT conversion selecting pro res 4444 and when I import them into the new project they won't key and the item properties for the clips indicate none for alpha. Manually changing that to straight doesn't fix the problem. What am I doing wrong?

You can use any of several techniques, Render Manager, for one, disable and then re-enable cip, for another. Remove Attributes, sort of, carefully select on option but you need to do the experimentation on your own.

  • Why do I have to convert t2i files to pro res in fcp x? What difference does it make ?

    Hey Guys,
Just wondering why do I have to convert canon t2i files to prores in fcp x? What difference does it make ? I'm able to edit in fcpx the files that have just been imported diectly in. Does it cause any problems in export?
    Thanks so much,
    Jamie

I am not familiar with Canon files.
I assume that they are like AVCHD which are really designed only as a delivery format and not for editing.
Though they can be edited it is concidered better to convert them to ProRes 422 for editing.
Though nothing terrible will probably happen if you don't convert them, you are likely to get improved results and faster rendering of complex effects with the converted media.
The best thing is to do 2 very short (sub - 5 minute) identical test projects adding lots of effects etc. with both methods and then you will be able to determine which technique suits you.

  • Trouble with flickering after converting AVCHD files to Apple Pro Res 22

    Hi guys.
I have figured out that Apple Pro res 22 is the best format for my AVCHD files.
But I am having trouble with the files after converting them to this format.
Every 60 frames I have a blurred frame.
This results in a flickering effect when watching the clip.
The original MP4 clip (AVCHD) plays fine on the Mac but when I convert is it flickers.
I have captured a still shot of the frame here
    http://www.willpower.net.au/DOWNLOADS/FrameError.jpeg
Here are the settings I am using for the conversion
    http://www.willpower.net.au/DOWNLOADS/Error.JPG
Here is the converted file in Apple Pro Res 22 format with the flickering
    http://www.willpower.net.au/DOWNLOADS/SANY0007.mov
I'd appreciate any help that you can offer.

Actually I think I might have found the answer.
After diggin deaper into the camera manual I have discovered that the setting I had it on "Full HD" actually is interlaced not progressive. Even though tha badging on the camera says Progressive"
So I think something got lost when converting the files to apple pro res.
I just shot a 10 sec clip on "Full HR" which is the progressive function and it converted nicely.
I'll come back to this post after shooting and making a little test movie today.
    Thanks for your help.
PS. I wonder what codec it actually shoots in. Apparently it is not AVCHD but MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 compression (I thought that was AVCHD)

  • Do i need to convert my Nikon D 800 video to Pro res files to work in FCP X?

Do i need to convert my nikon D 800 video footage from H.264 to Pro res to work in Final cut pro X?

You can import your footage directly to FCP X.
FCP X can work with the native footage. Inside FCP X you can create "Optimized Media", which is in ProRes 422.
You may not need to, depending on the edits you make (how many effects, etc). Since you can create optimized media at any time, I suggest you try it. If FCP X is slow editing your original media, optimize.

  • Uncompressed QT vs Apple Pro Res

    Hi All
We are about to venture into 16mm transfer to HD for the first time. The telecine house can give us Uncompressed QTs or Apple Pro Res on a hard drive.
These are the pro's and con's as I far as I can tell:
    Uncompressed QT:
    - Large Files
    - Cannot be used (without conversion) on our current FCP set-up
    - Highest quality, which is great for archiving and future use of the media
    Apple Pro Res:
    - Smaller files
    - Can be used directly on our set-up, without any conversion (there are some time constraints on the project
    - Almost the same quality as Uncompressed (???)
The workflow I am considering is to get the files back as uncompressed qt's (to make sure the Masters are the highest quality possible) then convert them to Apple Pro Res in Compressor, then edit. Does that sound right?
Is there any point to doing a 'neg match' (editing in Apple Pro Res then upconverting to uncompressed qt's as if in an off-line/on-line environment)?
And, lastly, what Apple Pro Res format should I ask for?
Any other golden nuggets of information you ca add will be greatly appreciated.
    cheers

Hi Jokke, If it's not too late, I've just been through exactly the same decision: shot on super 16 and had to worry about what to do with it. For me the decision had a lot to do with speed of editing, size of files and the way the final thing would be presented (HD Mpeg projected in my case) For all these reasons, the Prores codec worked fine. All the film buffs will scoff at this but very often the differences are really indiscernible and you won't need a bunch of supercomputers to crunch through the uncompressed footage with filters and dissolves applied to it. If you choose to go with Prores, you should definitely take the 422 HQ variety, although I think there's a newer better Prores codec coming out. Maybe one of the more tech-savvy persons on the forum would know about that.

  • AVCHD transfer- AIC VS Pro Res HQ

I am mucking around with "clip wrap" and converting some material using Pro Res HQ and the same material with AIC. I was wondering is there a great benefit using the Pro Res codec especially since it uses enormous amounts of memory? I know its supposed to be better quality.

Use ProRes but not HQ. It's overkill for the footage. It won't look any diferent (ProRes 422 HQ vs ProRes 422) but the HQ will have significantly larger file sizes.

  • Converting H.264 files to Pro res 422

    Hi
I've been given some H.264 files (.MOV and .THM) that were dragged onto my harddrive.
I want to covert them to Pro Res 422 to edit them in Final Cut
I tried to create a droplet to do this by: FILE - Create Droplets and selecting the Apple Pro Res 422 option in the Quicktime settings folder.
Is this correct? Or have I missed out a/some stage/s?
Do I need to convert both the .MOV and .THM files?
And how can I tell if the new clips are in the correct format?
    Thanks.

If you import these files into Final cut just go to your sequence settings and transcode to APR.

  • How to set up Final Cut Pro, Pro Res and H.264 project

Before I dive into this edit, I want to be sure it will all be compatible.  Here's what I have:
Pro Res HQ422 footag,  imported it into Final Cut Pro.  I also have H.264 footage imported into Final Cut Pro. Will it be possible to mix the H.264 footage on the ProRes timeline?  The ProRes footage was shot on a Canon 7d Mk II with an Atomos Ninja Star.  I have another batch of footage I'd like to use shot on a Canon 6d (full frame) that imports in as H.264.  This project will also use stills in the edit.
    Any suggestions or comments appreciated.
    thanks
    JR

Many of us will tell you it's no big deal to mix your media codecs. Your modern Macintosh can handle the job. Mostly.
Myself, I use workflows that carry over from ye olden days. I transcode everything to my planned release codec before beginning to edit and the timeline is the release medium's codec. In this case, I'd be moving everything to ProRes422 (not HQ) because you can't really gain anything by converting your DSLRs' MPEG4 to ProResHQ. I have really good reasons for this step but my reasons probably are not valid to anyone else.
Whatever advice you receive here, you must design and conduct some useful tests to determine if said advice is any good for your workflow and machine's specs. Know what your release medium is going to be; how high does the editing, rendering, and sharing quality need to be before you hit the ceiling?

  • Converting 7D camera footage to Apple Pro Res 422 HQ

I shot footage with the Canon 7D. I brought the footage to Compressor (latest version as part of Final Cut Studio). I am transcoding the footage to Apple Pro Res 422 HQ for editing in Final Cut Pro 7.
A few clips have been transcoded. I open up the original file and the Pro Res HQ file and compare them side by side on my Mac Book Pro. I would like to attach the screenshot but don't think I can do it that here. Anyway, the Pro Res clip is slightly smaller when opened with Quicktime 7 and 10. Also, the colors seem to be darker and the clip a lot muddier than before.
Has anyone had any experience with this? Thanks.

My clips do experience a slight color shift but nothing nominal. However, I have no problems converting my files using the preset and opening them up in FCP 7. When I open them in QTX they appear the same size as their original. Have you checked the inspector pane on your MBP? I have had issues where QTX will not open a video full size due to screen resolution limitations and would always downsize instead. That could be your issue since the MBP cannot display a 1080p file at full resolution.

  • Quality loss when converting pro res to mp4

    Hi
I have a problem with the workflow from After Effects to a final .mp4 video.
I have been editing time lapses in After Effects, and exporting them as Pro Res HQ- all good so far. However, I can´t seems to be able to convert the Pro Res file to a .mp4 (or quick time .mov for that matter) without significant quality loss. This happens if I convert using adobe media encoder, or if I import the Pro Res files to Premiere and export through Premiere.
However, if I import the original JPG/TIFs to Premiere, and export using the exact same setting- I get a better result. Also, when I have uploaded the original Pro Res HQ file to vimeo, they do a much better job of converting it than Media Encoder or Premiere do when I convert to .mp4 (I´m aware that it is not the same conversion, but still..).
So my conclusion must be that AME and PP does not convert from Pro Res to other codecs very well? I have to work on my files in AE, and I need .mp4 as the final product (requirement for uploading to a stock site). How do I do this without getting lower quality video than if my workflow and export was only in Premiere? After Effects does not render out .mp4 very well it seems...
A screenshot showing the setting I use when exporting from PP or AME. The settings produce a good result when exporting other files from PP, but not the Pro Res files I have exporter from AE.
    Thanks for your input!

Figured it out after testing various settings. I read an article describing the keyframe interval setting at 1 as the best option- clearly that was wrong! After searching I found a better description of keyframe interval: "Having too many keyframes severely reduces quality, because the efficiency of reusing image areas from previous frames is completely lost at each keyframe – the encoder has to "start over" at every keyframe. Therefore, we want as few keyframes as possible to achieve the highest quality for the given target bitrate."
Tested with keyframe settings 25 and 75- both seem fine.
    Thanks for the feedback
