Converting 16 x 9 footage/sequence to 4 x 3

Hi - I have a sequence that was shot in HDV 1080i60, but I need to convert it to 4 x 3 for uploading to the web.
What's the easiest way to do this? Please advise, thanks.

You can modify the presets in Compressor to resize and crop your video, and will show you the result in the preview window.
However, simply editing in 16:9 and cropping to 4:3 may not crop each shot as you prefer. Your other alternative is to drop the widescreen clips into a 4:3 sequence in FCP so that you can reframe each shot for better centering.
If you do this, youmay find it helpful to start with a native widescreen version, then create a 4:3 version from that - pasting or apple-dragging the clips in (apple dragging one sequence into another will drop in all the clips in the sequence. Once you have the wide clips in the 4:3 sequence, FCP will want to letterbox them by default. You can scale up the first clip and use past attributes to get that scale applied to all the clips before you start your manual pan & scan process.
Hope this helps -

  • Convert HD low res footage to normal

I am having a problem with footage that was shot in HD. I am working in Final Cut 6.0
The footage was digitized onto a hard drive in low res because of the amount of space (gigs) it would take on the hard drive.
I created a new sequence and changed the settings in Easy Setup as
    Format: HD
    Rate: 29.97
    Use: dvcpro hd 1080i60
The video rate in item properties is 29.97, can this be my problem? Or do I need
to change the format to HDV and rate to another speed?
    Thank you.

If you are wanting to get the footage back to HD, you will need to re-digitize in HD. Is is technically possible to convert the low-res footage to HD, but the quality was already lost when you digitized in low-res. (If that is what you mean)

  • How to convert go pro 4k footage to AVC1 codec

hello just curious how can you convert go pro 4k footage into AVC1 codec?

    >I have been editing footage from P2 card shot at 720 24p using H 264 codec in FCP
How?  Panasonic P2 cameras don't shoot H.264.  They shoot DVCPRO HD and AVCINTRA.  How did you get it to H.264?
    >apparently i should be using a ProRes LT setting.. codec???
Well, if you shot DVCPRO HD, then FCP brings it in as DVCPRO HD.  If you shot AVCIntra, you have many ProRes options...ProRes 422, LT, HQ...Proxy for offline editing, and 4444, which you should not use.
    >Have been using this setting since 2008, is this set when logging and transferring...can I up res. existing edited footage??
Again, how on earth did you convert your footage to H.264? FCP doesn't do it...I don't know of third party apps that do.  And to make H.264 settings, you really have to go out of your way to do.
This is the workflow for P2 in FCP:

  • Using MPEG Streamclip to convert files for EX-1 sequence

I am trying to use MPEG Streamclip to convert mp4 and mpeg files in order to edit them in the same sequence as my EX-1 footage. What settings should I use on MPEG Streamclip that would be most appropriate for seamlessly editing the former MPEG and mp4 files with the EX-1 footage? Any thoughts on what sequence settings I should use? Right now I have it set as "XDCam Ex 1080p24 VBR" but every time I bring in files I have tried to convert using MPEG Streamclip, they need to render and I'm trying to avoid that. Thanks!

  • Converting 29.97 stock footage to 25fps

I have some stock footage that is 29.97fps in my final cut express sequence and it jerks every second or so, while the rest of my footage is 25fps and plays smoothly - how do I convert the 29.97fps to 25fps so it plays smoothly. There is no audio with it, so that is not a problem.
I have the new compressor but I have no idea how to use it
    Thanks

The low-cost way to convert NTSC footage to PAL is to use JES Deinterlacer.  Convert the clip(s) to PAL and then re-import them back into FCE.
Is this SD or HD footage?

  • How can I convert 30 fps edited footage to 29.97 in prem 6?

I have 11 minutes of footage that I want to be able to send to my dv camcorder and then burn the dvd but the problem is I edited all of the footage in a 30 fps timebase and when I open the project up in 29.97 premiere tells me that it will add gliches, etc. and sure enough it does and the audio levels are different. How can i fix this without having to re-edit all of my footage?

A free converter that will convert AVCHD to Premiere Elements compatible hi-def MPEG2 is the Free AVCHD Converter, available from:
    http://www.koyotesoft.com
According tp Paul Scrivener, you should up the bit rate to 25000kb/s and convert, and it will export 1920x1080 MPEG2.
One downside is that, when you install it, it automatically downloads a search tool to your browser toolbar -- but it can easily be removed using Add/Remove Programs.
For easy editing of AVCHD and even conversion to standard DV-AVI, a great buy is Corel VideoStudio Pro X2. This editor/converter sells for $59.99.

  • Convert syncronous serial data into sequence of hex values

    Hi,
I have a problem analysing captured data of a digital I/O board. I hope one of you can give me an advice/hint on this.
    Used Software: Labview Express 7.0
    Problem description:
The captured digital data contains on channel 0 a clock signal, on channel 1 a reset signal and on channel 3 a data signal. The data signal is syncronized to the clock and consists out of 8 serial data bits. My problem is, how to convert this clock syncronized serial data signal into a sequence (array) of bytes each represented by 2 hex digits?
More details on the problem environment:
    - The captured data comes from an ASCII file which contains data samples of a 16bit digital I/O card. Every line contains one sample encoded as 4 hex digits
    - The file is converted by a VI to a digital waveform and plotted by a digital waveform graph.
One of my core problem on the way to a solution lies in the area, of how to "Trigger and Gate" the digital waveform based on the rising edge of channel 0.
Thanks in advance for your help!
    Tryber.

I checked with the 7.0 express version we have loaded on an older computer still and the part that I think you can use was in that version. In the second loop I had made a note: Boolean Crossing PtByPt.  This looks at a binary input and can output a true pulse (one iteration) based on the direction input condition.  This has three options;  False-True (rising), True-False (falling), or Either which is the option I had used in that vi.  This should allow you to detect a false-true state change on the clock channel.  Now, you say that the clock pulse is not consistant, but what about the information pulses? That was the reason for the first two loops on my program.  To insure that the digital value was measured during one input pulse to avoid turning two or more input pulses into one digital value.
As far as your question about trigger functions between the two, I'm not too sure.  I believe they offer the same options that I tend to use so I havnt had a problem with either.  On your block diagram menu select All Functions > Analyze > Point by Point > Other Functions PtbyPt.  There are some very handy tools in that menu.

  • Panasonic Lumix GH1 footage sequence settings?

I have a GH1 and shot some footage at 1080 24p.  I imported the footage and premiere shows it as having a 30fps frame rate.  I tried every sequence setting I could find: DSLR, AVCHD etc at all different frame rates and I cant find one that doesnt require the footage on the timeline to be rendered.  Is there such a timeline setting, and if not, what would you recommend for the best export?  I dont want to go ahead and edit the whole piece only to find it all interlacey on export.  thanks!

  • Optimal Settings for Converting Sony AVCHD .MTS Footage for DVD Delivery

I am starting with footage from a Sony HDR-SR7 camcorder. Since iMovie is still kind of wonky with this, I am going to batch convert all my clips using the VeggieTools plug-in scripting for *Sony Vegas Pro* (under my Windows partition of my MacBook Pro). I can convert over each file into a new clip in a lot of different formats.
My goal is to *bring the footage over to Mac and edit it in Final Cut Express.* Eventually, I will be mastering and delivering on DVD (most likely through iDVD). And I am looking for guidance.
First, I have a lot of choices for the conversion format. But I am not sure what to use. I know that the original is upper field dominant and HD in size (16:9). I will eventually be going to standard DVD NTSC (with letterboxing top and bottom to fill up the format space of the 4:3 aspect ratio). And I assume that is lower field dominant.
Do I need to find some setting that lets me convert the footage to double the 29.97 fps rate while interpolating the fields? Or do I not have to worry about this? I am worried that bringing the size of the footage down will create some weird artifacts if this isn't taken care of first.
I guess the main question is, since I am looking to pretty much just edit these clips together and won't be doing much in the way of special effects, what's the best way or format to choose to *turn the HD footage into high quality SD footage* that I can quickly trim and string together *in Final Cut Express*...
Not sure if I gave enough info. I will be checking often in anyone wishes to try and tackle this one and needs more details...
    And thanks for listening!!

OK my fault for not being clear on an extremely important point: I don't need anamorphic widescreen. Sorry to waste your brainpower on my lack of clarity. Mea culpa.
I intend to show this only on a standard definition TV from a standard definition DVD player. The "letterboxing" I spoke of is intentional on my part inside the standard def 4:3 frame. I will just let there be black bars at the top and the bottom.
So I don't need full super high resolution during this transfer (IF iMovie hadn't stopped recognizing my Sony AVCHD MTS camera after the first batch of video I collected, this wouldn't even be an issue. Been spending days on the forums trying all the solutions for the rest of my footage...).
But now that I have a workaround, I am just mostly confused about what to do about the field order (and thus, the frame rate) and the resizing (for convenience in size and playback speed). The original is upper first, and I am pretty sure that the QuickTime Movie I eventually make for iDVD should be lower field first (haven't tried tackling the can of worms of ideal MOV settings for an iDVD standard def disc yet).

  • Format|settings for converting AVC MPEG-4 footage to import into project

    hi.
so the graphic designer for my favourite band dropped a couple of ~1⅓ gig MPEG-4 Movie (.m4v files consisting of footage taken during concerts in 2000|2001 on a handheld digital camcorder) into my lap the other day—& asked me if i could clean it up & split the each show’s file up into segments short enough to upload to YouTube...& while i feel fairly confident i can swing that order once i’ve got the footage in Final Cut, i’d greatly appreciate some advice regarding...making it to that premise. um. basically, if i try to import any of these .m4a files into Final Cut, i get this error:
    screenshot → [http://s3.amazonaws.com/ember/67PNmuKRePVvWJfFudHiSKj7kr9PfgzI_o.png]
so...after some preliminary investigation, i take it that i need to convert each of these files into a different format that Final Cut won’t turn its nose up at (—right?). which brings me to the crux of the matter:
§1 · *what format &|or settings* (—compatible with FCP7!—) *would result in the least loss of quality in the process of conversion,* if the original file is as delineated in this screenshot (→ [http://s3.amazonaws.com/ember/AAd0FBegXjXLXqtas8f9xIZa0v0TvrO3_l.png])?
§2 · *what program would you recommend i use to do this* (as yet hypothetical, albeit) *file conversion* (as prescribed in the answer to preceding enquiry)?

hey, great! thanks for the absurdly-prompt response. looks like that’ll do the trick.
though! a minor clarification, mostly just to satisfy my curiosity—
there are five Apple ProRes codecs:
    · Apple ProRes 4444
    · Apple ProRes 422 (HQ)
    · Apple ProRes 422
    · Apple ProRes 422 (LT)
    · Apple ProRes 422 (Proxy)
i’m guessing that—considering this footage is shot with a consumer-level cam, & is only 720x480 besides—the Apple ProRes 422 will be more than enough, right? that’s the one i should be using...riiight? (i mean...i figure anything more than that would be overkill,—or at least a moot point, if the original file doesn’t have anywhere near the level of detail|precision that the more heavy-duty iterations of ProRes affect—) ...is any of this speculation on target?
(i’m mostly concerned on account of the blurb about Chroma Sampling on page 7 of *Apple’s White Paper on the ProRes family* (→ [http://images.apple.com/finalcutstudio/docs/AppleProRes_White_Paper_July2009.pdf])—since i want to do some pretty hefty colour correction {probably the 3-way color corrector + desaturate highlights & lows filters...though that’s just a hunch} on all these files, & i reeeeeeally don’t want to lose any data that might improve the quality|accuracy|&c. of said corrections.)
—& if it’s at all significant, i may be trying to use the SmoothCam thing on these as well...though this footage is so shaky & erratic i wouldn’t be surprised if trying to make it slightly less emetic is a nonesuch of a lost cause.

  • Have to convert 5d mark iii footage?

    Hello,
When I try to drop mark iii footage on the SpeedGrade timeline I don't get any video, but I get audio. The thumbnails display a red dot at the top left corner:
I presume I have to convert the footage to something more common and editable before bringing into SpeedGrade, is that right?
    Many Thanks,
    David

It shouldn't be an issue bringing mkIII footage right into SpeedGrade.
    A couple of questions:
Are you working on Win or Mac ?
What are you seeing on screen when you load the clip to timeline (error message, black) ? Please upload a screen-grab of SpeedGrade UI
Can you load the clip in QT player ?
Can you load any other QT's in SpeedGrade ?
    Thanks.

  • Converting digital waveform into bit sequence

    Dear friends,
I am stuck with the task of converting a digital waveform (16 bit values) into
    the following waveform:
each sample of the original waveform should be represented by a sequence of
bits (or H and L analog values) in the second waveform,
the duration of the bit sequence should be half (in general arbitrary fraction)
of the sample clock period of the original waveform,
the bit sequence should be padded by zeros so that the total duration of the
bit sequence and the pad equals to the sample clock period of the first
    waveform.
I tried to represent these two waveforms in the picture attached.
It would be really great if someone could give me hints/suggestions to this
    problem!
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi SamboNI,
    Thanks for your reply!
    I have couple of notes:
I tried to implement your instructions but the LabView gives error message
    (please see the screenshot attached).
I guess there should be "Boolean to (1,0)" VI between "Number to
Boolean Array" and "Build Array" VIs (?)
The problem I have is a bit more complex:
I have a digital waveform (16 bit integers). I need to transform the waveform
in the easiest and fastest way into the following form:
Each sample of the original waveform (16 bit integer number, i.e. 5) should be
represented by a sequence of 0s and 1s corresponding to the bit sequence of that number (0000000000000101 for 5) padded
by a sequence of zeros (i.e. 00000) in the final waveform. I will use the
final waveform to drive single line of the 6534 board instead of 16 lines of
this bopard in the case of the original waveform.
    More generally:
I need to realize communication protocol with the AD5541
Digital-to Analog converter from Analog Devices (
    http://www.analog.com/en/prod/0%2C2877%2CAD5541%2C00.html ) using 6534 NI
board. Therefore I need also build SCLK and CS waveforms and synchronize
them with the DATA waveform I was talking above. Is there a way to do this?
By the way - do LabView have standard means to communicate
with devices like AD5541? Does it require a special software module and/or
    hardware board?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Livetype converts my 16:9 footage into 4:3, how do I stop this happening ?

I have a selection of clips filmed in 16:9 on a Sony HDR HC1 in DV that I want to add titles to. Whenever I load the clip into Livetype it reverts to 4:3. I have changed the settings in Properties but when I render it as a movie it reverts back to 4:3 again.
I need to export the final clips to FC and this is proving very frustrating.
How can I import 16:9, add titles and export as 16:9 so the clip can be used anywhere in that format?
    Thanks

You have to "finesse" livetype to get it to understand you're working with anamorphic material. Here's how:

  • Converting h264 720p ntsc footage to pal DVD for a client and get no audio.

    Hey,
I tried dropping the rendered video into the encoder  first and then tried to render from the h264 timeline to a new PAL DVD file directly and neither one has audio.
Is there something I am missing?
    Windows 7 ultimate
8 core AMD R9270x graphics card (Open Cl working great for rendering now)

Most DVD players can handle both PAL (Europe and other countries) and NTSC.
No practical method to change the frames per second rate without introducing other problems.

  • Downsizing 5d mkii 1080p and Gopro 720p footage into same 720p sequence

    Hey guys,
I'm new here and have looked around on the forums and FAQ's for answers but have turned up with nothing.
Basically I have filmed footage in 1080p with a Canon 5d mkII and also 720p footage with two GoPro's.
I want to export a 720p video using both of these resolutions.
What I had planned was downsizing the 1080p footage (already in the sequence) to 720p to match the rest of the footage and can't seem to work out how to do it!
My current attempts have the 720p footage come up as a smaller  'box' in the final clip, where you can still see the 1080p footage below  it.
In other words, the 1080p footage isn't downsizing, and is staying at 1080p.
If anyone could help me, it would be much appreciated!
    Using Premiere Pro CS5.5
    Cheers

It looks exactly the same quality, just compressed!
That's rather a contradiction in terms.  Most compression types aren't lossless, and certainly the options from Handbrake aren't, which means some level of degredation will be introduced in the process.  It's not good advice to convert already heavilly comrpessed footage for editing, unless you're converting to a lossless format.
