Converting an 8 process to a 9 process

Hello,
I'm trying to convert a version 8 process to a version 9 process that merges XML data with an XDP form.
A brief overview of how things are actually structured.
I have a process (version 8) that invokes the sub process which performs the merge (version 9) and then updates the corresponding row in the database. The input parameter to the merge process are a token which identifies the row, the xdp file and data that it is to be merged. These are variable pieces of input
Under the version 8 process the xdp files were stored as a resource to the merge process.
I've set up the replacement merge process in its own little area and modified the calling process to invoke it. I've also changed the Content Root URI to point at this area when invoked.
I've also modified the Application structure so that the XDP files are in a folder and the corresponding call to determine the to point at the location of the XDP files.

In a nuthshell, the ContentRootURI should be set to repository:// and the form url should be /ApplicationName/Version/FolderStructure/FormName.

Convert from Word Processing to Page Layout?

I received a 26 page document that is in Word Processing mode, but I would like to convert to Page Layout mode.

The question is whether the WP version is just main body text or has floating text boxes and image boxes.
If it is just main body text then there is no problem. Just click in the text and Select All (cmd a).
Open a suitable Layout document and paste into a text box, then create links from that to other pages/text boxes.
As fruhulda and Jerrold have said, WP is often the better choice as it generally includes everything that Layout has, but not vice versa. You will need to think through your layout however and construct it to whatever freeform layout you may want.
My personal opinion is that Layout mode is severely challenged.

CS6: Converting PMS to Process for files to be printed 4 Color Process

As the owner of Ripe Inc, a brand design firm, this is proving to be a big problem for us. I've searched forums looking for a solution and read lots of discussions about how the PMS color palettes "simulate" on screen how the color will print on different substrates (glossy vs matte vs uncoated paper). That's great for comps, but if you convert it to CMYK to print it, and the values are representing a "simulated" color it won't look correct (by that I mean come close to matching the spot color). For example, the uncoated palette simulates the color by making them appear a bit washed out on screen - pretty good visual simulation. But it might do so by adding black and cyan to orange for example, etc. - effectively dulling the original color. So if I convert that to CMYK within the new Pantone + color palette, and then send it to the printer - it won't appear as it did on screen, it will dull the end color even more because it's converted the color to the dull simulated version - what a disaster! It's only doing half the job - showing us what it should look like on screen. In order to be truly efficient for design professionals the CMYK conversion might remove black and cyan completely to effectively brighten the color in the final output on uncoated paper. I would prefer it just stick to the standard conversion, which Pantone did have as a standard palette option (PMS to process), and then I can adjust if I think it's necessary.
Any corporate branding system will likely start with a PMS spot color palette for the identity. Then it will build into many different adaptations - full color brochures, large format banners and trade show graphics, website, advertising. So any corporate branding system will need to have PMS, CMYK and RGB versions of their main corporate color palette. There was a standard for these translations that was automatically consistent in the Adobe software and that is now all over the place, so it relies on individuals manually adapting the color mixes for final use - what a great way to screw things up. Please advise.

Not exactly. You're basicly talking about screen color generation which is hardly ever accurate and a typical desktop print scenario. When it comes to offset printing, the file should be built to whatever the print vendor requires. So, when you "communicate" with the print vendor, they can work with you on achieving the results you are looking to achieve. In your establishing the color for a brand identity guide, the Spot color is the main reference color, with Pantone's CMYK equivalents found in their Pantone Color Guides ( the printed version with conversion numbers for Coated, Uncoated, and Matte. You can realistically expect to minimalize deviates if you stick to those numbers, some which have not been reformulated for quite some time. In a professional workflow and a calibrated workflow, a RIP will be used via a proofer printer ( inkjet ) where the RIP converts the Spot color. In your case, you'd assign the Pantone 166 in the file which is sent to the RIP and then onto the print proofer. Someone off in la la land may get ahold of the file and do their own conversion and then send it off to their generic, non-postscript desktop office printer. Usually in that scenario, the print driver cannot deal with Spot color and the user is forced to convert to CMYK. The color swatch libraries found in Adobe applications can handle the conversion if the user is savvy enough to use the swatch system. Or, they can use your CMYK equivalents which you have assigned in your Branding Guide ( based on Pantone's printed color guide ). Pantone has made recent updates challenging to average users. You are being frustrated by those updates and are being led around by software application color conversion methods. In the case of RGB and hex code deviates, pantone has done a good job supplying you and everyone else with those numbers on their web site. I understand your frustration, but try to relax and settle with the 166 = 0C, 64M, 100Y, 0K conversion numbers. Also, it may not be necessary to include Uncoated equivalents because those will only deviate via whatever paper is used in whatever printer is being used. A 0C, 64M, 100Y,0K will print different on a coated glossy sheet than it would on a 20lb copier sheet with a different whiteness and different weight and different opaqueness, never mind different inkjets, laser printers, or color copiers. You cannot control those scenarios, so why pull your hair out on Color Bridge deviates? The only control you have is how you communicate the color in your Branding Guide, which should be the 166 / 0C, 64M, 100Y, 0K numbers. End it there. Those are industry standard color numbers that should hold up on any reasonably good output device.

The options to disable the convert, wdmcserver, wdphotodbmerger processes in the My Cloud Dashboard

The process named "convert" in WD My Cloud EX4 causes severe performance and availability problems as well as unnecessary wear of hard drives. After putting many files into the EX4 unit, the convert process begins to consume CPU 100% and cause many unnecessary I/O activities on the hard drives until the owner reboots the unit. (Update: Firmware 1.02.36 cut CPU consumption down to 40%.)

Like many others, I expect EX4 to be a 24x7 reliable storage system with good consistent performance. I do not need media streaming and cloud capabilities. I do not want to waste system resources to have my files analyzed to be classified whether they are videos or photos. I'd be more than happy if EX4 reported 100% of my files classified as "Other" without looking at any of them. Jumpman has made a good point on wdmcserver and thumbnail generation. I would like WD to provide the owners of My Cloud EX4/EX2 with the Dashboard options to disable the "convert," "wdmcserver," "wdphotodbmerger," and other processes that generate metadata, thumbnails, and hidden folders so that they will never run again on a future firmware update.

I have an EX2 also. Firmware is 10.02.08 as of now and it states this is the latest. CPU is usually above 80% usage but it is not constant. . Struthio: I can tell you, that this device is waaaaaaay better than what I have tested from other companies!! The worst experience I had was with Seagate and believe me, I work with these devices. These small flaws are there, apparently WD doesnt test too much but all-in-all these are working at least. As I see most flaws are security related and can be solved with a soft update. How to convert a PDF's Process Black to spot color

We have been asked to build InDesign templates for a two-PMS-color math book. The design calls for two PMS colors: a dark blue for most text and red highlights.
Because our Math plug-in doesn't work easily with PMS colors (it defaults to Process black), we hope to create all the “blue” text in Process Black. The press PDFs will have two inks: Process Black and PMS red. On press they will print the black plate in our blue PMS color.
This plan works on press, but for non-press use, we also want the PDFs to visually match the blue and red printed book. Ideally we would convert the Black Process ink to a blue spot but I'm not sure if this can be done.
Question 1: Does anyone know of a way to convert Process Black in a PDF to a spot color? Pitstop can convert spot to process, but we want the reverse.
Question 2 (which I may also post in the InDesign forum) Do you know of a way to redefine (or alias?) the indesign black swatch so that it functions as a spot color?

1 - yes, you can do this with Preflight in Acrobat Pro, but it's not on the default set of fixups.
Open Preflight, select "Single fixups" - the wrench icon
Options > Create New Preflight Fixup
Give it a name (e.g. "process black to spot")
Choose the Color category in the upper right
Choose 'Convert to spot color' in the upper left
Define the source parameters in the main panel (in your case, CMYK%, 0-0-0-100 with tolerance 0)
Define the spot color to change this color into, and the alternative space for rendering (i.e. your blue color)
If you wish, add a check to limit the conversion to certain things (e.g. text, vectors, etc.)
Click OK to save the fixup, then click FIX to apply it. To verify the result, use the Output Preview dialog in Acrobat.

Option to convert Planned orders to Process order C

Kindly suggest, which is the best option to convert Planned order to Process order C from below mentioned options
1) Convert Planned orders to Process order C & send it to R/3. or
2) Send Planned orders to R/3 & convert it into Process order C in R/3

Depends on the process and how stable your planning is. If there is a lot more decisions to be made in the R3 side you let the planned orders be converted in R3 else
you normally would use the conversion indicator and send the planned order to R3 and it gets converted to Process Order there

____Spot colour turns black when converted to process!

I have raster effect shadows coloured as a fake spot colour that I called 'shadow' which is a mix of CMYK, but if I convert that 'spot' to process, the shadows turn black without any other colour...
please tell me how to fix this!!!

I used the default blending mode for a drop shadow "multiply".
I assume the original poster is wanting to convert in order to re-purpose the art. I have not dealt specifically with the issue of a drop shadow that was built as a spot color and needed to convert it to process or visa versa but I could definitely imagine a scenario where it would be needed. I have done this countless times, just not specifically with a live drop shadow. I also see the advantage in being able to do this by editing the swatch. I think if Adobe did not intend for you to edit swatches, then once created they should be locked out from editing.
I believe when the OP stated that their spot color was a mix of CMYK it does not mean that the swatch is a process swatch, rather the display color is defined by a CMYK build.
I can accept that this is a limitation of Illustrator, but I do not accept that the answer is to not do it in the first place.
I found a work around. If you make a second swatch (call it shadow 2 for instance) and set that swatch as a global process swatch you can then merge the two swatches together with a sucessful change to the drop shadow. If you have never used merge swatches please keep in mind that the swatch you first select is the dominant swatch, so select the color you want to merge to first.

Converting a gradient from a spot color to a process build, hides vector elements

I have been using Illustrator for many years and consider myself very familiar with it, but recently ran into a strange issue I have never seen before.
The background element is a radial gradient with points of 0% to 50% of a spot color. The file came to me as one single layer, with the gradient in question above a vector rectangle. The rectangle shows up fine, however, until I convert the gradient from a spot to a process build at which point the box is no longer visible. The initial issue I found was that the box is beneath the gradient, but my question is why would it be visible as long as the gradient uses a spot and then disappear behind it when converted to a process build?

Version is CS5.
Part of what made the issue so confusing is that there are no effects applied. Applying the overprint feature or multiply effect don't effect the outcome either. It's only something that can be fixed by moving the gradient to a layer behind the element which is disappearing. My question is less about how to fix it (I've done that and moved on) and more about why this would happen - it seems to be a strange anomoly.
In response to the replies involving the method of color conversion:
I have used all of the methods mentioned and the end result is the same. It is starting to look to me like this is a fluke that happened with this particular file and that it is not something that can be duplicated intentionally.

Text reflow when converting from rgb spot color to process black

The setup that I'm using is a G5 Mac OSX, version 10.4.11. The InDesign application is CS3, version 5.0.3. The fonts are loaded into Extensis Font Reserve, server 1.7.4. The InDesign document has a text box using 2 different font sets. One set, Helvetica Neue, uses the rgb spot color. The other one, a mixed set of New Century Schoolbook, is used for a paragraph which is process black. When deleting the rgb spot color from the swatches and converting it to process black, the New Century Schoolbook reflows which had already been process black.
If I just select the Helvetica Neue type and change that line to process black there is no reflow problem.
When I tried this document on another Mac with the same set up there was no reflow. Is this an InDesign preference problem? Thanks

If you change the color back and then back again, do you get more reflows?
The reason I ask is that when InDesign opens a document, it holds the existing composition of stories until you apply any edit. So, it could be that what you're seeing here is that yours and your user's setups are different enough that reflow is inevitable the moment you edit the text, and changing the color counts as editing.

Help!!! 100% - K Black keeps converting to process color.

I am working on a job that want all blacks to be 100% K. I converted my file to CMYK and in preferences changed the appearance of black to "display all blacks accurately". However, every time I check my blacks, it doesn't hold the color I have defined and has converted them back to C 60%, M 90%. Can you tell me what setting to change so that it stops doing this? Please note that I am not exporting them they are just instantly converting to the process CMYK.

How did you convert the file to CMYK? The best way is to open a new file in CMYK mode, select all in the original file and copy/paste into the new file. Then make your changes to 100%K.

Convertion of Planned Order to Process Order

Hi Gurus,
While I am converting planned order > process order thru BDC ( SAP Std T-code = COR7) , while saving the process order , following error is coming " No Status Object is available for ORD % 000001 "
What could be the reason?
How to overcome this error message.

Increasing memory used by java process when calling Runtime.exec()

Hi everyone!
I'm running a servlet Oracle iAS 9i, Jserv. It receives an image posted by a user and does a System.exec() which performs a call to convert (an image processing utility included in ImageMagick).
After a few hours, java process start taking more and more RAM, until it crashes with an error like this:
Memory: 5394008 free of 134217728 total. (I log this myself)
Exception: java.io.IOException: Not enough space
java.lang.UNIXProcess.forkAndExec(), line -2.
java.lang.UNIXProcess.<init>(), line 54.
java.lang.Runtime.execInternal(), line -2.
java.lang.Runtime.exec(), line 553.
ImageProcessor.convert(), line 235.
ImageProcessor.createItemPics(), line 124.
Uploader.doPost(), line 69.
As you can see, this is not an OutOfMemoryError, but something else in connection with O/S.
This is not related to hard disk space, since there is a lot of free space in every filesystems
After restarting the webserver, everything goes back to normal and start increasing RAM again.
Is there anything I can do? Any help will be gratly appreciated... Thanks!!!

I am also suffering. I tried closing the processes by:

Process exists hangs

Somewhere along the line of the past few months I installed an update (from Apple?) that broke applescripts on my mac (10.5.8). As far as I can tell it's limited to scripts that determine if a process name is running. For scripts that I have written, ScriptEditor converts the "exists process" keywords to "exists «class prcs»" which is new to me. This script will hang until it times-out with "Apple event timeout". This is true for scripts that I have written as well as Microsoft software updater for office that runs an applescript (I've seen it in Activity Monitor) to determine what software is running and needs to be closed.

Process Color to Spot in a PDF??

so I have a PDF file that is 100pages for example. This only has black text and nothing else. How can I convert this black process text to spot?? Not page by page such as in Illustrator but all pages together and then export again as PDF with the text in sport color. Thanks in advance!

1 - yes, you can do this with Preflight in Acrobat Pro, but it's not on the default set of fixups.
Open Preflight, select "Single fixups" - the wrench icon
Options > Create New Preflight Fixup
Give it a name (e.g. "process black to spot")
Choose the Color category in the upper right
Choose 'Convert to spot color' in the upper left

Packaging shows 4 process color when there is none

My packaging shows 4 process inks even though there is only a black and white image. My pdf image was first saved as a grayscale. When that didn't work, I converted it to a Gray Gamma 2.2 Grayscale in Acrobat and "saved as" my image. It still shows up as a 4 process color. Interestingly, when I check separations, it shows up as only black.
To check my InDesign, I completely removed everything from the document and left a blank page. The packaging still shows 4 color process.
Verified in Ink Manager that Convert Spot to Process is not checked.
Is there anything else I need to check?

No, but undo the Gray Gamma 2.2. I am not familair with the result, and may be appended, but it is not necessary.
There will always be the CMY channels listed in Adobe Products; you correctly verified only black is in use via the Seperations Preview.
InDesign package always lists cmyk inks.
