Converting data in waveform graph to an ASCII file

We are using a Labview program to acquire rapid voltage data, however due to specifications on the board we are employing a voltage divider factor that can be changed in the program, as well as sensing the polarity and correcting it so that the voltage is always positive.  This data is saved in raw form to a bin file.  To view this data, we have another program that has inputs for the scan rate and voltage divider factor, and then it reads the raw binary file and generates voltage vs. time data directly into a waveform graph.  No one here actually wrote this entire program, it is my understanding that NI originally helped to develop the program and no one in my group fully understands the intricacies.
What we would like to do is obtain data in 2-column ASCII format from the waveform graph directly (voltage vs. time) in some way.  Is this possible, and if so how can it be done?  The program is currently run off of Labview 4.1, however we also have Labview 7.0 on another computer and can copy the program and bin files if necessary.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm having some trouble because the data is not technically in a waveform (brownish-red colored wire).  The program builds a waveform *graph* (cluster data with pink wire) using the bundle function, where the top input is a dbl x0 that is generated from (1/scan rate) multiplied by the first scan number.  The middle input is delta(t), which is just (1/scan rate), and the bottom input is a 2D array of two columns of voltage data, one is voltage and the second is a voltage from another channel that I don't need, and I can't figure out how the 2D array is generated because it looks like it should only be 1D (it suddenly becomes 2D after leaving a for loop). This creates a waveform graph with time vs. the 2 sets of voltage data.
So you'd think you could just build a waveform with the same data, but the "build waveform" function wants a t0 with a timestamp format and a 1D array for the 'Y' input, and I also can't just convert the cluster data for the waveform graph to an array using the 'cluster to array' function as it gives me a data mismatch.
Does anyone know how to remove the first column or row of a 2D array and create a 1D array?  Also, how can I input a timestamped t0 if it needs to be on the order of <1 ms, since milliseconds are crucial here?  Is there any way to make a waveform with a decimal t0 instead of this ridiculous timestamp?
Thanks again for any help.

  • How can I make waveform graph and/or excel file with two different dynamic DBL values?

As the question describes, I have two dbl sources from a load cell and linear actuator (from firgelli). I want to make a load/displacement curve from the force readings from the load cell and the displacement readings from the linear actuator. The load cell outputs an analog signal that can be acquired by a DAQ and the actuator comes in with a board and VI program to control the speed and measure the displacement of the actuator to a sample rate of my choosing. Is there a way that I can make a VI where it continues to collect data and construct the graph I'm looking for?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

A couple points about your application:
    1.  Synchronization.  Since you're ultimate goal is a stress/strain curve, it is vital that your force and displacement data be synchronized appropriately.  If your sampling is beyond a few times a second, this is not really possible without some form of hardware synchronization via either a trigger and/or sample clock.  Two NI DAQ boards can be synchronized this way easily, but it seems you're using 3rd party hardware for one of these processes.  Would need to know more about that board to know what options you have.  You could specify what your resolution is in distance, and how fast the article will be moving, to get an idea of how fast to acquire, and how well you'll need to synchronize the data.  Another option, since it appears each data stream will be sampled on a hardware-timed sample clock, they will be offset in time, but not skewed during the acquisition.  You may be able to identify a feature in the data set common to each and use that to remove the timing offset after the process is completed.
    2.  Display.  To display data during the acquisition process, I usually recommend at least one display that plots vs. time.  Much easier to spot irregularities with the acquisition process that way.  However, if you'd like to also plot force vs. displacement, you can use an XY Graph to plot parametrically. For Example, in your case you would use the Displacement data as the X coordinates, and the Force data as the Y coordinates.
    3.  Saving data to file.  I would recommend using the Save to Spreadsheet File.vi (File IO pallette) to save your data.  If you use a comma as the delimiter, and save the file with a *.csv extension, you will have a file that is easily read into excel.  The standard tab-delimited spreadsheet file is also fine, it will just require an extra step to read it into excel to specify to excel what the delimiter is.
    4.  Batch vs. Real-Time Recording (Data File).  If your process is short (< 30 sec) you may be better off acquiring the data, Storing it locally to the VI (Array - usually maintained in a shift register), and then writing the file with a header (acquisition parameters, test article information, data column headers) and the data all at once in batch mode to the file after the process is finished.  If, however, it is longer than that you would be better off starting a data file with a header and appending the data to the file as you go, so that if something happens during your test, you at least have data up to that point.
    Hope this Helps,

  • Save multiple waveform graphs and data in one Excel File

    Hi there,
I managed to save data from waveform graph into excel file and saving the plot into excel but individually. I'm aiming to save both the data and the plot in an excel file. May I know how do I do it? I've tried using the Write to Measurement File vi and also the invoke node of the waveform chart but it's still not giving me what I've wanted.
The above was only for one analog input channel and I have 2 analog inputs each with their respective sets of data and plot. Is there a way to execute the data and plot of one input in one worksheet and another set of data and plot in another worksheet, all in one excel file?

    Hi there;
I would recommend using the Report Generation Toolkit; it is the easiest way.
You can use either the Report Express VI or the Appi to save all your data in both formats

  • Waveform graphs not autoscaling in X

Hello, I have an annoying problem in drawing data with waveform graphs (LV2011).
I will put it in a short statement: I need to compel graphs to properly rescale on the X scale.
    Now the details:
I need to show data acquired during a given "event", updating a graph every second. I don't know how long the event will last, but I prefer not to set the X-axis as autoscaled because I don't like the axis rescaling effect. So I initally set the graph as fixed (ScaleFit=0) to a reasonable width in abscissa. When the acquisition ends, I want to show all the data maximized on the available control width, so I set the X axis scaling property to 2. Unfortunately, the graph is often not rescaled. I also tried leaving ScaleFit to 0 and setting the Range:Maximum to the proper value or using the ForceRedraw method, to no avail.
Do you know any trick to compel the X axis to be rescaled?

    No, GerdW, it doesn't work
I tried also with ScaleFit=1 (Autoscale once now) and with more complicated pattern (for example reinit to default, then autoscale, then rewrite data). No success.
In all cases, it mainly works (but not always) when I run the program in the LV environment. The very opposite when I deal with an executable.

  • How to get the data from a waveform graph?

    Hellow!
I have a waveform graph which has the experiment signal, so how can i do to save the X,Y data in a file?
    thanks!
    Mike

    Hii,
You can store the data as shown in the vi, just use the signal data by converting it into the numeric form and give it instead of random data.
    Hope this will help.

  • Display Data on waveform chart or XY graph over a long period of time

Display Data on waveform chart or XY graph over a long period of time
    Can anyone help?
I am acquiring data from an Ni DAQ card with the following parameters - sample rate = 12800, number of samples = 4096. I want to extract order information so as to track changes in the amplitudes of certain frequency harmonics. So I use the sound and vibration toolkit to extract this information as shown in the attached Vi.  I will like to plot the resulting amplitudes against real-time starting at the time the Vi was run.  I really want the display to show these changes over long periods (eg. days, months and even years).
    Problem.
I have tried to plot the Y component of the resulting magnitude for a given order on a waveform chart. My choice of the waveform chart is because I also want to display  alarm limits (using the mask and limit vi) (I can't have these lines displayed on an XY graph plot).  I tried adjusting the scale offset using the property node and setting the offset to current time. However, the display on the X-axis can only show a span of  2 minutes as will be seen when you run the attached vi. I want the time display on the x-axis to be over a period of  days, months  and even years.  Is there a way to set the maximum scale on the x-axis to be say a year or so in future.
I really want the display to be like the one in in the second attachment.
Attached is a sample VI created using an Ni USB 9234 DAQ card. Any card will do but I am only getting the signal from one channel for this example
I will appreciate any help that can be given to me.
    Thanks

Long term testing can be tricky- and we'l get into that later.  Lets start with the basics that you have wrong.
The vi as you have constructed it has only one memory element, the chart history length (default is 1024.)
You can change the number of points the Chart will remember by Right-clicking the chart an select Chart History Length from the menu.
But for a long term test - and one where you want to REMEMBER the first value you need a memeory element that is independant of the application.  Your PC WILL loose power or need to be rebooted eventually.  Heck it might even need to be replaced! you really need to store your data in a file. Preferablly in a file that is backed-up on a regular basis so you don't lose every point of data if the PC dies.  It realy hurts when you have to restart a 2yr test because you've lost the 18months of data you collected.
For an application like this I would seperate my "collection" and "Evaluation" operations.
Have one vi that takes the reading and writes it to a file at a configurable rate  You may want 1reading  per minute for seveal days then 1 per hour for a few weeks- then maybe only once or twice a week for the next couple of years since you are looking for LONG TERM stability.  having too much data to evaluate can take a lot of digging to find the few things that interest you (but always take more that you think you need)
Have another utility that COPIES the files, reads them and displays the data you are interested in that day.  The data you want to look at won't change over time HOWEVER, you WILL want to analize it in different ways depending on what the data trends look like.  Having seperate routines for collection and display allows you to update the display style and analisys without even stopping the collection vi (much less editing the vi)

  • Data acquisition and waveform graph plot

    Dear All
My signal is out put of current transformer which is 2v dc. I succesfully configure usb 1208fs with labview8.2. Now I want to plot my input signal on the waveform graph in frequency vs amplitude(db). Can any one guide me how can i plot my data?

    Hi,
Could you strip the VISA stuff and re-post your VI so I could run it and see where is the difference coming from. A few observations though
    1. Always try to wire from left to right and top to bottom so that your block diagram code is readable.
     2. A waveform graph gets completely redrawn everytime you give it soem data ao it is typically used outside any loops. If you want to display a waveform inside a loop, it is better to use waveform chart.

  • Using a waveform graph, how to get all recorded data graphed?

I record data from 6 channels using DAQmx with simulated channels and write to measurement file.  Then using read from measurement file, and waveform graph, I am trying to graph the data that has been recorded.  I am only getting a small amount graphed.  The same graph appears whether I have let the measure and record program run for 1 minute or for ten minutes.  It also displays a time at the end of the graph that is in the future.  What am I doing wrong?  Please help.

  • How do I change the data used by a Waveform graph dependent upon which tab window is active?

    Hi,
First I want to say thank you in advanced!!  Let me describe the situation a little bit.  My front panel VI (see attachment) has a tab control and on each tab window I have an intensity chart with a free-drag cursor.  Below the tab control window I am trying to display either the row or the column of data where the cursor is located, I can do this for each intensity chart individually.  I am trying to clean the block diagram up a little bit and instead of using 4 Waveform Graphs, I want to use only one, can the data that is displayed in the wave form graph is associated with which page is active on the Tab Control.  Can this be done?  And how can I do it?

  • How does waveform graph downsamples the data before it is plotted

    Hi,
I'm interested in how does waveform graph downsamples the data before it is plotted and what algorithm is used for this purpose? My goal is to plot 30 plots that have 1M samples each and I would like to downsample them before plotting onto a graph. I tried several VIs/algorithms for resampling and none of them gave the same result as seen by waveform graph (when all the samples are plotted).
For example, if only one sample of 1M samples is 1 and all others are 0, then after downsampling to 1k samples the sample is not visible on the graph anymore. However, if I plot all 1M samples directly onto the graph, then also this 1 sample is visible (see attached example).

    Hi andrej,
LabVIEW draws plots in the way that draw every pixel affected by signal. So for example if there is zero-valued 1M samples and even one equals to 1, you will see the peak. That is the reason why you do not get the exactly same behavior comparing to interpolating. But if you set FIR as interpolation mode in Resample Waveforms (single shot).vi, result is really similar, but of course amplitude is 1000-times smaller than original one (because there is dt set to 1000). Keep also in mind that in Graph 2, there is different Y-scale and it should be considered as noise, not relevant data, I would expect 1000-times smaller amplitude as in Graph 3, it is many more times smaller.
I would also like to say something about downsampling (decimating) the data. If you have 1M samples, you can see the peak even that there is only one value. But bigger problem is that with this graph resolution (I guess that is not more than 1000px), it is problem to find position of this peak. It means that still the zoom is needed to know where the peak is. Usually, when there is that big set of data, you are extracting different data (statistical information, peaks in FFT, etc.) not just visual data in graph.
    Mariaaa:
I do not understand your question, can you please describe more your needs? You mentioned saving the data into a file, you can use Write to Measurement File express VI or see Write to Text File.vi in Example Finder and try to appropriately modify it.
    Best regards,
    Martin

  • Append data to a waveform graph

I am using the Acquire N - Multi-Digital Trig to acquire a series of data. I wish to store the data acquired, by saving them into a file (Export Waveforms To Spreadsheet File) however, the waveform graph data are not appended. I have tried to see the example provided for appending data to a waveform graph (example.zip) on this webpage but I wasn't able to apply the principle to my application. (I have even tried the Append Waveforms.vi function but I cannot connect it to the waveform graph data).
I will appreciate it if I can have any suggestions on how to append the waveform graph data, so as to store them in a file.
    Thank you

There is an Append Waveforms.vi that you can use for this. It's located in the Functions>>Waveform>>Waveform Operations palette. That will append two waveforms, which is different from just an array. If you only want to append arrays, you can use the Build Array function to concatenate two arrays.

  • Is there a way to change the time of a saved data to be as the same as the time-axis of the waveform graph?

    Hi,
I've a problem while saving the waveform to a spreadsheet.
The problem that I'm facing is that I'm not able to save/change the time-axis of the waveform graph into the excel spreadsheet.
The attachments below are what I've programmed on.
1st file that would be asked to save is the results of the waveform.
2nd file, supposing to be the time-axis
3rd file, is the multiplication of results of CH 1 and CH 2.
Would be glad if someone can enlighten me with a solution which is suitable for LabView version 8.2 and Tektronix DPO 72004.

  • XControl Data wiring problem - Data type is Waveform Graph (Strict)

    Hi,
I created an Xcontrol for a waveform graph. The datatype (under Data 1.ctl) is a WaveformGraph reference type.
When I wire a Waveform graph reference to the Xcontrol (as an indicator), there is a wire conflict.
I checked the strict definition and the reference types are theoretically congruent but I cannot seem to wire it together. Any solutions?
    Please see the attached code.

It looks like the XControl data is a waveform reference (strict). I can't open the XControl though, because I don't have a 7z compiler, but the problem is probably that the refnum will only take in a reference to an exact waveform graph because it's strict.
You can create a non-strict reference and use that for your data by:
    Open your data control FP
    Press Ctrl-Space
    Type "Control Refnum"
Press Enter and place that on front panel
Right click it and brows to the correct data type:

  • How to Write Waveform graph data to Text File with user option to do so

So, I'm new to labview and am having trouble writing one program in particular.  I have a waveform graph that runs for 120 seconds generating a sine curve.  I am, however, having a difficult time getting the program to write the x and y coordinates into a text file.  I have attached what I have so far.
The first task I was assigned was to write a program that creates a snusoidal curve on the front pannel adding one data point each half second for 120 seconds.  The plot should only start when the user presses a start button.
The next part involves giving the user an option to write the generated data to a spreadsheet file called "sine.txt".  The file name and location should be hardcoded.  The file should contain the x and y coordinates of each data point in columns separated by tabs, also known as delimited.
I have spent several hours tweaking the attached program and I just can't seem to get it to work right.  Any suggestions would help at this point.
