Converting music!!

Hi all,
I want to convert all my WMA files to iTunes friendly files (preferably MP3), and be able to play the converted files in windows media player on my laptop, as well as transfer them to my ipod classic.
I have converted some as "MP3 Encoder" selected in the preferences tab, but I chose to open them with media player and it says "The selected file has a file extension (.m4a) that is not recognized.
How can I convert WMA files to iTunes friendly files, and be able to play them through windows media player?
I have a choice in the conversion list of:
AAC
AIFF
Apple Lossless Encoder
MP3 Encoder
WAV Encoder
Can anyone help?! Thanks!

Mclaren 697,
If you are going to use both iTunes and WMP, the most flexible choice will be MP3. Go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Importing and set the preference to "MP3 Encoder." Pick your bit rate; if you don't know what to use, use 192.
Take one WMA file and add it to your iTunes library, and watch what happens. Assuming it is an unprotected WMA, iTunes will create an MP3 and add it to the iTunes library. Verify that the new MP3 plays in both iTunes and WMP. Then delete the original WMA.
Once you understand how it works, do the other thousands of your WMAs.
Let us know if there are any problems with this. If by any chance your WMAs are protected and don't convert, also let us know.

Select/highlight the ones that you want to change in your iTunes library, do Get-Info (control-I) and change their Media Kind on their Options tab to 'Music Video' - and then similarly for the podcasts.

  • Convert Music while Keeping Play Count, etc.

I've just come to the conclusion that AAC sounds significantly better than MP3 at the same bitrate. I've also noticed from using my own music that a song that's 128-kbps AAC sounds just as good as 160-kbps MP3.
When I first started using iTunes (back in my Windoze days), I imported the majority of my music as 160-kbps MP3 and continued doing so after I got my MBP.
Now since I realized that I could have the same quality of music take up much less space if I use 128-kbps AAC, I would like to convert my MP3s to AAC. However, when doing this in iTunes, it does not copy the play count, last played, etc. While it wouldn't be a big deal if I only had a few hundred songs, I have over 2500 that I would want to convert.
Does anyone know of a way (or another application) that can convert my MP3s to AAC and keep play counts and other tags?
Tanks in advance for any help.

Well, that's the problem. I've got everything figured out about how I'd convert my music and remove the originals. But my problem is I don't want to lose my play counts. If were just a couple songs, I could just run up the play count on my own, but I have way too many songs to do that to.
That's why I'm trying to find out if there's some way (a script or another application) to convert my files and keep all that information.
Sorry, but you cannot. Converting music formats creates a new separate file. It is supposed to work that way due to the differences in file qualities and other details. Playcount can only be manipulated by either playing the tracks through or editing the iTunes database (something I do not recommend)

Wanting to convert music accumulated over the years on reel to reel and
cassette. Need to see if there is converting this music (Analog) and play it

You need Audacity, or something like it. If your iMac doesn't sport a line-in port then you'll also need a USB audio interface of some kind.

  • Converting Music files to bookmarkable Audio Books

Converting Music files to bookmarkable Audio Books.
It seems there are plenty of hacks out there but I have a real life and can't really be bothered with burning a CD with ACC files, etc. or anything else that takes more than half a minute. All I'd really like to do is highlight, click and drop the "music files" into the "Audio Book" library. Is there a simple way to do this? -And for that matter does Apple have a valid reason why this doesn't seem to be consumer friendly?

Thanks,-This looks like just what the Dr. ordered, :? (Oy, no smileys on this forum?!) Unfortunately I made the somewhat misguided decision a few years ago to buy a pc (+ the 2+ grand of software) -OK, long story short; I need the windows xp equivalent of this script and couldn't find it in any of the sub-links. -But full marks to you for effort!

I used to have a pc with which I youtube converted the majority of my music library. After I got a mac, none of my youtube converted music would transfer to iTunes on the mac. Any ideas on how to put ALL the music from my phone back on to the itunes on my mac?

You can't sync music not obtained from the iTunes Store currently on your phone to the iTunes library on your computer. Assuming this music  on your old PC, your only choice is to copy it from your PC to your Mac.  Otherwise, SOL.

how would i be able to convert music files, like wma to mp3 on my mac

If the music was just purchased on the iPod from iTunes Store, then sync with iTunes. You will be prompted to transfer purchased items to iTunes. You can also re-download prior purchases directly in iTunes: Download past purchases.
Otherwise, you will need a third-party utility for the chore such as Pod To Mac or Pod To PC.

The apple account music you want to transfer >> go to itunes store and log into the apple account that you want music to be put on your ltunes library...sign in then after you sign in then look down on right hand side for the word "Purchased" and those are the accounts songs and you can download them for free.
Note that this does not change the iTunes account of these songs. This simply adds them to the iTunes library you are using.
Also note than once you do this, you will have to wait 90 days to redownload any iTunes purchases from any other iTunes account, including the original iTunes account.
It is possible to transfer itunes music from one account to another!
    No it is not!

If by any chance you have purchased DRM-encumbered files, which were sold by the iTunes Store until 2009, be aware that they only work in Apple products.
You can replace them with non-DRM files in AAC format for 30 cents apiece, or you can use iTunes to burn them to an audio CD, which can be used like any audio CD.

  • CONVERTING MUSIC FROM ORIGINAL CDS (problem)

Hi I'm wondering why when i convert music from original cds to my phone that the sound only comes out of one speaker??? is there a way to resolve this?? downloaded and mp3 music works fine with great sound.
    Thanx

Why don't you try this way:
    - download and install iTunes from http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
    - Check in Preferences-->Extended (i believe)-->Import that AAC is selected
    - rip your Audio CD via "Import CD" command
    - sync with Nokia and play
If you do not hear stereo, then something is really wrong
