Convoluted question about watching DVDs on TV using Mac Mini

I bought a third-party external DVD player/burner to use with my late 2012 Mac Mini.  I recently moved back to the UK from the US.  Of course they are different DVD regions.
Before I left the US I was able to watch any region DVD and switch between them on my Mac Mini using a VLC player.
So here is my question:
Since I can use the multi-region VLC player wherever I am, if I hook up the Mac Mini with its external DVD player to the HDMI-capable TV to the Mac Mini using a HDMI cable, will the Mac Mini act as a conduit and play US DVDs through the UK TV?
I've been using the Mac Mini in the UK with no problem as it can handle the voltage differences with a US to UK adapter.  (I had to buy a new monitor though.)
If this scenario is unworkable I'm open to suggestions for how to make it happen.
Any and all advice much appreciated.   Thank you.
Jane

will the Mac Mini act as a conduit and play US DVDs through the UK TV?
It should. If you can play U.S. DVDs in the U.K. I don't know of any reason why it wouldn't work the other way around.

  • Question about installing Snow Leopard on a Mac Mini

I'm in the process of installing Snow Leopard on a Mac Mini, but it's taking forever. It's been installing for well over 2 hours now and still indicates an hour left to install. Is this unusual? I'm getting a little concerned. What do I do if I have to cancel the install? Do I have to start from scratch again?

    How about this:
    1. If necessary start up from the external HD & verify that everything is working right & all your files are intact on it.
    2. Clone from the external to internal HD.
    3. Start up from the internal HD & verify as in #1 that everything works as expected.
    4. Install Snow Leopard on the external HD. If that completes successfully, restart from it & verify as above.
5.a. If that all checks out, clone the external back to the internal HD & you are done.
5.b. If that fails, you still have the internal HD with your working copy of 10.5.8 to use while you try to figure out what is going wrong.
The main benefit of this is you always have one working installation to fall back on no matter what happens.

  • Question about the CSS behavior when using layer 3 sticky and sticky table

    Hi everyone,
I have a question about the CSS behavior when using layer 3 sticky and sticky table is full.
If I configure layer 3 sticky and specify the inactivity timeout as below, how does the CSS
handle subsequent needed sticky requests ?
    advanced-balance sticky-srcip
    sticky-inact-timeout 30
    CSS document says that
    Note:
If you use the sticky-inact-timeout command to specify the inactivity timeout
period on a sticky connection, when the sticky table becomes full and none of
the entries have expired from the sticky table, the CSS rejects subsequent
    needed sticky requests.
My question is what is the next reaction by doing the CSS if the CSS is in the
    following condition:
when the sticky table becomes full and none of the entries have expired from
the sticky table, the CSS rejects subsequent needed sticky requests
Does CSS just rejects/drops subsequent needed sticky requests ?
    or
Does CSS does not stick subsequence requests to particular service but CSS forward
subsequence requests with round-robin basis ? which means if the sticky table is full,
the CSS just works round-robin load balancing fashion for subsequence requests ?
    Your information would be appreciated.
    Best regards,

    Hello,
There is a good document explaining this on Cisco web site
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/contnetw/ps789/products_tech_note09186a0080094b4b.shtml
It depends if the sticky-inact-timeout is used or not. If not, it's FIFO (the oldest entry in the sticky table is removed). If yes, the CSS will reject the next sticky request.

Thinking about using Mac Mini's as desktops for 20 employee business.  Pro's Vs. Con's

Your best bet would be to buy a single 2012 MacMini Server model that you can use to manage the balance of the other machines. Either that or upgrade one of the MM's to OS X Yosemite Server . You can find information about the Server edition at:
    https://www.apple.com/osx/server/
However I would STRONGLY recommend visiting your local Apple Store and ask to speak to their business specialist, they are trained to manage customer needs such as yours.
The major advantage of using Macs over any PC is the stability of OS X itself and the overall quality of support that you will never get with HP.

  • My question is that if I am using Mac and another friend of mine is using Ipad mini and her skpe isnt working and we want to share screens how can we do it through Ichat? Since on facetime screens cant be shared!

My question is that if I am using Mac and another friend of mine is using Ipad mini and her skpe isnt working and we want to share screens how can we do it through Ichat? Since on facetime screens cant be shared!

    Hi,
    You can't.
Messages - the replacement for iChat in Mountain Lion and beyond will  do Screen Sharing  but only to the accounts it did in iChat 5 and 6  (actually it includes iChat 4 as well)
That is to say in earlier version of iChat you could login to AIM and Jabber servers as well as enabling the Bonjour option to chat on your LAN.
All these will do Video and Audio only chats which in turn means they will Screen Share.
At iChat 6 an Yahoo option was added but it can only Text chat (it can't even send Files or Pics)
This means only the Internet able accounts that login in to AIM or to a Jabber server  can Video and therefore Screen Share.
The iMessages account will Invoke FaceTime if you use the Video icon during text chat.  (I.e. it is not Video inside the app like the AIM or Jabber accounts can do)
    NOTE.
AIM includes Apple Issued Apple ID as Valid AIM Screen Names.
Google Mail ID s can be used and Google Talk IDs with Messages as they run a Jabber server.
Facebook allow you to create a Chat ID (Facebook Chat ID) which is also a Jabber server.

  • DVD Drive Non-Function Mac Mini 3,1 (late 2009)

    Hi
The DVD drive in my Mac Mini has recently become non-functional, "About this Mac" sees the drive fine,
    OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5670S:
      Model:          OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5670S
      Revision:          2AHI
      Native Command Queuing:          No
      Detachable Drive:          No
      Power Off:          No
      Async Notification:          Yes
      Bay Name:          Upper
But when you insert a disc there is no response, it does not see to attempt to read it just ejects after about 20-30 seconds.
Any suggestions as to what could be the problem? This issue started sometime after I upgraded the memory, but I cannot be sure that the two things are connected as I very rarely use the DVD drive and the first time I tried to use it was several months later.
    Many Thanks

Optical drives are pretty short lived in my experience.
    Might try a cleaning Disc.

  • Problems playing dvds on my new mac mini

I'm trying to play a dvd on my new mac mini & whenever I hit the play button I get error: -70025. I've checked the disc for scratches etc... but all seems fine there. Does anyone know what that error is about or have any suggestions as to what I might be doing wrong?

All i can think of is running a cleaning disk in your Mini's drive. I'd be surprised if the mini needed cleaning since it's so new but you never know. Another question that comes to mind is if that particular DVD has some copy protection that prevents it from being played in computers. Some music CDs have that type of protection.

  • Mac Pro using Mac Mini as Print Server

    Hi all,
Mac Pro is wired to my network, Mac Mini is Airport connected.
I'd like to use Mac Mini as a Print Server without keyboard and mouse. I've installed OSXvnc-server on Mac Mini and Chicken of the VNC (CVNC) Client on Mac Pro.
Mac Pro's keyboard is azerty as was Mac Mini, it's impossible to loggin with Chicken of the VNC, password is not accepted, I connect an azerty keyboard to Mac Mini and I can loggin.
Typing on Mac Pro in Mac Mini TextEdit through CVNC give weird keyboard layout, not only azerty qwerty different layout.
In between my two Mac Mini there wasn't any problem using CVNC and the same server but Azerty Qwerty layout.
Is there any other solution to use Mac Mini as a print server ? What about using Desktop remote connection ?
    Thanks,
    Peloche,
    MacPro 2.66, 6GB, 1TB; Mini G4, 1.45, 1GB; iPod 60 GB; 30" & 20" ACD; Apple IIC   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Ah… right! That explains it.
So what model printers are they?
    Ned,
Printers are HP Color LaserJet 2550L, HP Photosmart 8250 and Epson EPL-5900L.
I've changed the VNC Client from "Chicken of the VNC" to "VNCThing".
Now I can log in from Mac Pro using its Azerty Keyboard as Qwerty Keyboard.
Once logged in I've set Mac Mini Keyboard to "Extended (or Expanded ?) American" keyboard within System Preferences, with this option Mac Mini see the Mac Pro Keyboard as an Azerty layout...
I've connected two printers through USB2 Hub connected to Mac Mini and the third one direct onto Mac Mini USB port.
Back to Mac Pro "System Preferences Fax & Printers", "+", immediatly the 3 printers have been proposed, I've selected them and tested all: it works perfectly.
Mac Mini is set to "restart after power cut" and is connected for power onto a remoted control power distribution sockets, that means Mac Mini is starting and stopped when printers are powered on and off.
The sole small issue is that I can't find how to display Mac Mini GUI on Mac Pro at a better resolution than 1024 x 768.
    Thanks for your time,

You can bypass the password and wipe the drive and return to the original facory installation if the seller included the orginal install DVDs with the Mac mini. If not you will need a retail version of Mac OS X.  To boot from the Install DVD restart the mini, immediately slip in the DVD and press and hold the C key.

iphoto on my used mac mini will not open my photos from my new macbook air,  it says something about updating the software, but i checked and there arent any updates available... please help

    Sorry for the second post..
I currently do not have an older version of iPhoto to test this on, but you might also try coping the Originals from the iPhoto Library of iPhoto 11.
    To do that;
    1. Right (control) click on the iPhoto Library in the Picture Folder on the MacBook Air
    2. Select Show Package Content.
    3. Click on the Originals Folder
    4. Navigate to the disired Event or photos and copy those images to your Flash or External Drive, then copy those to the older version of iPhoto.
Beware do not move, add or delete anything in the iPhoto Library, Apple has intensionally hidden it in later versions to prevent people from messing things up.

  • Used Mac Mini and reinstalling OS X

I bought a used Mac mini (late 2009) with mountain lion installed.  The previous owner didn't do a factory reset, so I attempted to by using OS X Utilities and reformatting the hard drive.  I then attempted to reinstall OS X, but since I'm not the original registered owner, I can't get past the login dialog during the license verification stage.  What should I do at this point?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

The first thing to do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You—not the original owner—must do that. Changes made by Apple over the years have made this seemingly straightforward task very complex.
How you go about it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
It's unsafe, and may be unlawful, to use a computer with software installed by a previous owner.
    1. If you don't own another Mac
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller—not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine is very old and has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for a MacBook Air. You should have received those media from the original owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To start up from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then restart the computer and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should start up in Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
Some models shipped with OS X 10.6 and received a firmware update after 10.7 was released, enabling them to use Internet Recovery. If you have one of those models, you may not be able to reinstall 10.6 even from the original discs, and Internet Recovery may not work either without the original owner's Apple ID. In that case, contact Apple Support, or take the machine to an Apple Store or another authorized service provider to have the OS installed.
    2. If you do own another Mac
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to prepare a USB device, then start up the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can start from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
    3. Partition and install OS X
    a. If you see a lock screen when trying to start up from installation media or in Recovery mode, then a firmware password was set by the previous owner, or the machine was remotely locked via iCloud. You'll either have to contact the owner or take the machine to an Apple Store or another service provider to be unlocked. You may be asked for proof of ownership.
    b. Launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive—not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the  Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
    c. An unusual problem may arise if all the following conditions apply:
OS X 10.7 or later was installed by the previous owner
The startup volume was encrypted with FileVault
You're booted in Recovery mode (that is, not from a 10.6 installation disc)
In that case, you won't be able to unlock the volume or partition the drive without the FileVault password. Ask for guidance or see this discussion.
    d. After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. If you're installing a version of OS X acquired from the App Store, you will need the Apple ID and password that you used. When the installation is done, the system will automatically restart into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
    e. Run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the original owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed—you have to repurchase them.
    4. Other issues
    a. If the original owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're irrevocably linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Mac App Store Customer Service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
    b. If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to  authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.
    c. When trying to create a new iCloud account, you might get a failure message: "Account limit reached." Apple imposes a lifetime limit of three iCloud account setups per device. Erasing the device does not reset the limit. You can still use an iCloud account that was created on another device, but you won't be able to create a new one. Contact iCloud Support for more information. The setup limit doesn't apply to Apple ID accounts used for other services, such as the iTunes and Mac App Stores, or iMessage. You can create as many of those accounts as you like.

The version of Pages is the most useful extra information, it hardly matters what Mac you are using.

The line could possibly be an underline or a paragraph border or a line which is a separate object underneath the rest of the text.
Probably it is a paragraph border.

  • No signal to VGA monitor using Mac mini display to VGA adaptor and first time boot Mac mini

Just unpacked Mac mini and powered up using Mac mini to VGA display adaptor and VGA monitor. There is no signal to the monitor ( power is on).
    How to see the display?

[    13.093] (==) No Layout section.  Using the first Screen section.
[    13.093] (==) No screen section available. Using defaults.
    [    13.093] (**) |-->Screen "Default Screen Section" (0)

[    13.093] (==) No monitor specified for screen "Default Screen Section".
            Using a default monitor configuration.
First step would be to create the necessary entries (easier to make a complete xorg.conf versus xorg.conf.d/##-whatever.conf).
All Desktop Environments / Window Managers rely on X.  Man pages are helpful, possibly some headaches ahead as I fought a dual-monitor display this way.
I currently run a xrandr script to switch displays on my hp pavilion: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xrandr#Scripts

My Adobe Flash CS6 Color Picker has ODD colors. I'm using Mac Mini OSX 10.8.1. Is there a fix?
I click on the color picker and where I have seen the normal #0000ff blue color on my windows computer, this mac Mountain lion version shows a purple-ish color. Oddly, If I enter the hex # into the color picker, and use it as a fill, the correct color displays on the stage but when i use the eyedropper on that color, it shows it as the purple color again on the toolbar.
I've seen a similar thing like this happen when using adobe photoshop. However, the usual solution is to just make the managed color profile set to monitor RGB. The only downside with Flash is there is no preference to set that. The color palette in Adobe Photoshop displays as it should with the correct blue.
I should also note that I'm using a Samsung 941bw monitor with my mac mini which could also be part of the problem.
I figured i'd make this post anyway just in case it's the OS & Adobe Flash CS6 and not the monitor.
I've included a screenshot as well that shows that i've chosen the purple color and then made a rectangle shape on the stage and it comes out blue.
    Thanks ahead for your response(s)

The OS disks that are shipped with a particular product

It will install on any Mini of that exact vintage, but that
    is all.
This is to prevent people from doing exactly what you

including Server, is only permitted to be run on one

Yes, you need to purchase another copy.
