Cookies and firefox

Ive been trying to find out why when i create a cookie
firefox does not kill my cookie when i close my browser (im using
FF v 3.0.5).
In theory if one does not set the expiry param in cfcookie
tag the cookie should expire once i close my browser. This seems
the case on many browsers except Firefox. I realise FF has an
option which one is supposed to check so "private" data is cleared
when browser is closed, but this is not a default settings.
Regardless to that in FF settings > Privacy > cookie panel I
have the setting checked on, “accept cookies from
sites”, “accept third-party cookies” and
“keep until they expire”. This tells me my cookie will
die when they need to depending on the settings they have been
given, but this never happens.
In my mind this leaves a security issue, if one does not
change their default "clear my private data" setting and does not
logout from a site properly, it will leaves their account open for
any other person who goes to the same site.
For example, this site and many others sites, I didn’t
check “remember me” option when I logged in however, if
I close my FF browser (but not logout) and reopen it, I’m
already logged in!
Id appreciate any help in regards to how I can get the same
behaviour to work on FF without depending on one changing their
browser settings.

@Davelaws
What’s the reason with adding the period at the start of
mysite.com?
The
documentation
on cfcookie says so. I suppose it has to do with how Coldfusion
extracts the domain name from subdomains like warehouse.mysite.com,
accounts.mysite.com, personnel.mysite.com, and so on.
Here's something else you might wish to know. I saved the
following version of your code as
firefoxCookieTest.cfm.
<cfif isDefined("COOKIE.cookieIsLive")>
<cfoutput>COOKIE.cookieIsLive=#COOKIE.cookieIsLive#</cfoutput>
<cfelse>
COOKIE.cookieIsLive=NOT DEFINED
</cfif>
<cfcookie value="#now()#" name="cookieIsLive">
Open the page for the first time in Firefox 3.0.5, and you
will get:
COOKIE.cookieIsLive=NOT DEFINED
Refresh the page, and you will get something like:
COOKIE.cookieIsLive={ts '2008-12-27 04:59:53'}
Then close and re-open Firefox. When you run the page, you
will get:
COOKIE.cookieIsLive=NOT DEFINED as before.
With the page still open, follow the menu
Tools => Options => Privacy(tab) => Show
Cookies(button). Locate the domain from the list of sites.
Click on the + symbol to expand. You will see that the cookie file
is still there, even though Coldfusion doesn't currently have the
cookie in memory.

  • Cookies and Firefox issue

    I am having an issue with my site (I did not develop it, but
    I am versed in CF enough to understand any solutions you might
    have)....
    Here is the problem...
    First, this is only an issue in Firefox. IE, Safari etc...
    etc.... do not have this problem.
    When you attempt to login, the page shows a message "Logging
    you in..." it then appears to be redirecting (as it should) to the
    requested page after successful login. But, it just flickers and
    then nothing. You are not logged in, no errors either from CF or
    from the code. Meaning there is nothing displayed to the user. So
    after a few tries users are giving up and leaving the site. What I
    have found is that if you clear the cookies then you can login and
    all is well.
    Upon further investigation, I logged into the admin side of
    the site, chose a user at random who had not logged in in more than
    a week. I tried to login to the site with his username and
    password, I could not (user and pwd are correct). After I could not
    login with his credentials, I tried my own and they too did not
    work although they did just prior to logging in with his. I cleared
    the cookies, and then it worked. (mine and his credentials).
    I also ttried, deleting just the cookies for my site and that
    doesn't work. It is only when you delete ALL cookies via the Clear
    Private Data, uncheck everything except cookies method that it
    works. So I'm stumped. I don't know if it is firefox, or my code,
    or the server, or IIS or what. Any clues that you folks can shed
    would be great. If anyone else is experiencing this sort of
    behavior please tell me what you have done. Again, I did not
    develop the site so technical details are a bit sketchy and I am
    trying to help the developer track this down.
    Essentially the site is developed in CF version 8, the login
    logic is CF/AJAX with javascript form field validation on the
    client. The webserver is IIS 6, the server itself is patched, the
    backend is SQL 2005 SP3 and again, this works flawlessly in other
    browsers.
    I appreciate any assistance.

    you said nothing about how your login framework is designed.
    are you using cflogin?
    did you make your own login framework based on session
    vars/whatever?
    are you using regular cf sessions or j2ee sessions? (you
    should do the
    latter, imho).
    let's start with that. post your code that performs login and
    the code
    that checks for login state. post you application settings as
    well.
    FF (as well as other browsers) has a feature to re-open
    previous tabs on
    start-up. this feature makes FF aggressively cache pretty
    much
    everything it can get its hands on, and never release it
    unless the user
    tells FF to clear out private data.
    your application needs to be designed with this and similar
    features in
    mind.
    post relevant code for starters.

    I turned off cookies in FF 3.6 and cannot turn them back on even though I read all the info about enabling cookies, deleting history and reinstalled FF. Now I have to use IE to get into my Gmail account.

    Did you check the cookie exceptions?

    I assume that you have separate Profiles for the Release and Nightly installations.

    if i install firefox 4, my old firefox data as in cookies and add-ons will get lost or what??
    I need it and also want to install the new Firefox
    == This happened ==
    Not sure how often

    You should always use beta test versions with a new and separate profile and keep the regular release so you can use that version in case of problems.
    See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_Manager
    Firefox 4.0b1 is the first of the beta test release versions and still has a lot of bugs.
    Such releases are meant for testing only so if bugs are found then they can get reported and fixed before the final 4.0 version gets released.
    If you do not have experience with such test releases then you are better of with the latest Firefox 3.6.6 release.

  • Browsing history is set to "delete on exit" from Firefox however cookies and history are still listed in Internet Explorer - which I never use. Why??

    Firefox is set to delete browsing history on exit. Appears to be working fine. However, if I open Internet Explorer - after closing Firefox - my cookies and history are listed in Internet Explorer. I have to go to Tools >Options> Internet History and delete everything manually. (Internet Explorer is also set to delete history on exit.
    Why are my cookies and history being transferred from Firefox to Internet Explorer?

    Thanks cor-el for the reply.
    Do not have any MS plugins that I'm aware of. No Silverlight,etc.
    How can I tell if Windows Media player is plugged in to FF?
    No IE View or IE tab.
    Not a major problem because I can go in and delete manually--minor hassle.
    Have had the same problem across several FF updates. Just curious why this is happening.

    flytnn,
    after a fresh install, Spotlight will need to reïndex the files on your internal disk — that happens each time a fresh installation takes place.
    I see that you have OS X 10.9.2 installed. Are you planning on installing the 10.9.3 update?

  • Can someone help me when Firefox closes randomly it removes all the cookies and cache, and I am not able to restore lost tabs...?

    For a while now Firefox has randomly shut down for reasons unknown. Sometimes windows reports the error but not always. When I start Firefox back up again, it does not restore my tabs. Also as an added bonus it deletes the cookies and cache, and I don't know why. Furthermore this occurrence has become more and more frequent. Just in the last hour along before writing this complaint, Firefox crashed three times right as I switch users, but not every time I switched. I am a taboholic, addicted to tabs, sometimes 70+, and this is the final straw. This frequency became more and more prominent a few days ago. When it first crashed, Windows was kind enough to let me know of the error which first occurred one to two weeks ago. It has become the very bane of my internet surfing. Someone please help, or I will have to renounce my allegiance to Firefox and switch to the dark side that is Crome.

    <blockquote>... or I will have to renounce my allegiance to Firefox ...</blockquote>
    There is no citizenship oath involved in using Firefox, it's a piece of software.
    Look, if Firefox isn't generating any crash reports, you more than likely have an operating system or hardware issue. If Firefox is generating crash reports you can retrieve that information and post the report numbers here.
    https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox+crashes#Getting_the_most_accurate_help_with_your_Firefox_crash
    Type '''about:crashes''' in the URL bar and hit Enter.
    Click the hyperlinks to bring up the Crash Report pages and copy'n'paste the URL of each of those reports into the message box here. We'll see if we can help you figure out what is causing those crashes to happen.

  • I cannot open google calendar with firefox, it is continuously saying cannot load page (I checked cookies, and they are enabled).

    Every time I click on Google Calendar, it opens a new window but says it is having a problem loading the page. I checked the cookies to make sure they are enabled because apparently that is a common problem. I downloaded the newest version of Firefox available, but that also did not help. I would like to not have to use Internet Explorer just to look at my calendar :-)

    This can happen if the Google cookie is malformed, delete the Google cookies and for good measure also clear the cache. For details on how to do that see [[deleting cookies]] and [[how to clear the cache]].

  • Please send instructions for correct way to UNINSTALL Firefox 5.0 and REINSTALL Firefox 3.6.3 and preserve all my cookies and bookmarks. DPGannon at sbcglobal dot net

    Very simple: I do NOT want to use Firefox 5.0. I did not intend for it to be installed on this computer and need to get rid of it and go back to Firefox 3.6.3. Please send instructions on how I can do that without loosing my cookies and bookmarks.
    I have been a fan and supporter of Mozilla and Firefox from the very beginning, but this latest release that appears to be a way to look like Google Chrome (that I hate) has me just about ready to hold my nose and go back to IE.
    What were you guys thinking?????
    Thank you.

    Install the following Add-on until Google releases a new version of their toolbar that is compatible with Firefox 5. Google needs to test their toolbar with Firefox 5 and change one line in their code to make it compatilbe. Most Add-ons that worked with Firefox 4 should still work with Firefox 5, but the developers need to update a line in their Add-on's code to indicate with which versions of Firefox the Add-on is compatible. The following Add-on adds a "Compatibility" button in your Add-ons > Extensions that you may need to click after installing it and restarting Firefox.

  • Firefox offered me a program that killed unwanted cookies and showed me a pop-up as they were deleted and it's gone. How can I get it back? Thanks

    Firefox offered me a program that killed unwanted cookies and showed me a pop-up as they were deleted and it's gone. How can I get it back? Thanks

    Thanks, but that didn't do it.
    When it was working, there was a small Firefox icon in the lower right corner...it showed a pop-up when someone tried to load a cookie, described it and deleted it. Yahoo was trying to load cookies every 15 minutes or so, this feature alerted me and described the action as 'self-destructed'. Would like to get it back....
    Thanks, Tedzo
