Copying folders based on contents to a new location in Automator

So my goal here is to Automate my downloads folder, to filter music into certain folders, movies, tv shows, you get the idea. I've been reading around and watching some videos to get an idea, but I can't figure out how to move a folder to a new location based on the contents of that folder.
Basically I want to search my downloads folder for subfolders that contain mp3 files, then move those folders (most likely albums) rather than their contents to the music folder.
I'm new to the community, this is my first post in fact, so if anyone has any ideas, recommendations, direction for where to properly post this question it would be much appreciated,
Thanks!

This should work:
To have the user choose where to move the files, click [Options], and check the box "Show this action when the workflow runs"

  • My Fantom backup drive is failing. I want to copy the time machine contents to a new backup drive and continue on as if nothing has happened.  Can I do this and if so how?  I have intel iMac running Mountain Lion.  Fantom Drive via Firewire 800.

My Fantom backup drive is failing and I have to send it in for warranty repair.  Before I do that I want to copy the time machine contents to a new drive and then use it for the backup, continuing on as if nothing had gone wrong with the first drive.  Can I do this?  Is it as simple as duplicating the first drive and replacing it with the second? New drive arrives Tuesday PM and both drives have dual firewire 800 ports.

I have used the Disk Utility to verify the contents of the backup drive so I don't think I have any corrupt files.  The drive just takes a minute or so to spin up to speed.  If I turn it off and then back on, it beeps at me for a few seconds and then starts it's slow process of trying to spin.  I think it's a power problem not a data problem.  I have my fingers crossed that it holds on until Tuesday PM when the new drive arrives.  I'm thinking that my two options are to duplicate the bad drive or partition the new drive and put the old backups on one partition and start afresh on the second partition.  Any input?
And thanks to both of you for the valuable information so far!

    Hi,
I would like to copy and paste the content from an excel file to another empty new document using automator, which I created a workflow like below
    get specific finder item
    open excel workbook
select cell from excel workbook (all content)
    obtain selected content from workbook
copy to pasteboard the content of excel workbook
    close the excel workbook
    create new excel workbook
paste copyboard content to excel workbook
can anyone kindly suggest what's wrong with this workflow?
    Thank you so much
    Eddy
(i know this is a number place but I couldn't find any excel seciton sorry guys...)

now it only does one file at a time, whereas I would like to do multiple files simultaneously.
If you try a search for "loop Automator" and also "folder actions" you may find some usable pointers on how to do that.  The first example on this page looks promising.

  • How do I get photos to show in my collections folders after moving photos to a new location?

After exporting my main folder to a new location along with the .lrcat and .lrdata files, along with my backup files, all of my collections folders show zero images in them.  I need to somehow link these files together to get my collections back.  The pnotos are there, just not showing in the collection folders.

Whats the simplest and most easily mainted method for storing files?  Do folks dump them into one huge file and then sort with Lr collections or do they import into smaller files AND sort with collections.
I would like to back up the mess I have and use collections but not sure if there is an efficent way to do so.
I believe that sometimes you are using the word "file" to mean "folder"
The simplest and easiest way to manage files is to use the default import mechanism in Lightroom, which is to put them into folders by capture date. This takes zero effort on your part. From that point on, you NEVER move them, how simple is that? (there is one exception which I shall explain in a minute) and then you use Lightroom tools ... keywords and other metadata, to allow you to organize and search.
Backups are accomplished by making a backup of both your catalog file and all of your photos.
The exception to never moving your photos is when you need to move them to a new hard disk or new computer, then of course you should move them.

  • Copying only G's content to his new iPod

My partner's content and mine are necessarily muddled together in iTunes on our PC because we only have one PC. I bought him a new iPod nano as the old one's battery kept flattening--the lock switch didn't work any longer to keep it from turning itself on and runnning the battery flat. So, I want to cleanly copy only his content from his old Nano including playlists to the new Nano.
I wonder if there's any non third-party way to do this. Our combined content in iTunes is 6,000 files, combination of purchased and imported content.

I have now manually moved most of his music from iTunes. I wish the darned iTunes had told us our new PC wasn't authorized when we first opened it. There were a lot of playlists that told us certain tunes weren't authorized for this PC. I authorized the PC for both our Apple IDs after moving all those playlists with tunes missing.
I hate DRM and especially Apple DRM. I've bought music from other sources and no one makes it as difficult to use your own purchased content as does Apple.

  • Moving all FCP content to a new drive, need advice!

Well, I just ran out of space on my FCP scratch/capture/content drive, an external 300gig. So I got this snazzy 1tb drive that is bootable and empty. What to do? How do I copy all the FCP content to the new drive, and what implications does have to all my FCP Studio projects that exist on my internal drive? Am I going to have to relink everything...and more importantly, is there a chance of messing up my projects here?
I was hoping to just somehow clone the volume on the old drive to the new, and blow away the old drive for other uses (TM) and fake out the OS to think nothing has changed. But when I looked in drive genius under duplicate volume, it warns me it will delete EVERYTHING on the target drive. Arg, no good. And in CCC it warns me it will make the target non-bootable. Double Arg. So what to do?
    thx

ps. I started a somewhat related thread here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8405889#8405889
as most of my aperture content is also on this FCP content drive and I need to move that too!

Arg, I did that, just a simple copy to the new drive and some of the assets where found and some not so i had to use that dialog "reconnect media" which must be the most confusing dialog in all of Leopard, and managed to reconnect everything in this very large project in process (heaven help me if I ever have to go back to the others), but now the problem is there are many things that are unrendered. Mostly the Motion imbeds. But in the System settings FCP figured out to just change the drive name to all the cache definitions, so not sure what to do about that except re-render all the timelines. Well, I knew it was not going to be easy!

  • Move equipment: drag and drop to new location

    Hello,
We are using CC04 to move/ copy equipment to a new location. When we copy a equipment and put to a new location it does not include the sub equipment.
Is there a quick and easier was to move or copy equipment to new locations and include everything to go with it: (BOM, Configuration, address, partners, document..etc.). In addition is there a way to copy functional location with all the equipment/subequipment and copy/move to new location.

  • Copy folders with the same name deletes contents of original folder

When backing up some iTunes songs manually I selected the folders I wanted to copy and copied them, then I pasted them into my backup folder.
I got the warning windows about folders having the same name, I could only cancel or replace. So I clicked replace. Then when I checked inside one of the destination folders the original contents of the folder has been erased and only the new files are left.
Has the way Snow Leopard deals with copying folders changed? As I am sure this did not happen before I upgraded.
I tried it on the command line with 'cp -aR' and everything worked as expected, but it does not warn that the folder already exists.
How do I get 'cp -aR' functionality out of finder?

After alot more searching it seems mac OS X has always done this, but I never noticed it before.
I can copy my backups over the network with:
    cp -aR Music/source_folder /Volumes/server_name/Music/
ditto can be used as well.

  • Can Robocopy Be Used To Copy Folders Newer Than A Certain Date?

We've been using robocopy with the /MAXAGE option to copy files newer than a certain date. Can the same be done for folders?
    Orange County District Attorney

    Hi,
We cannot use robocopy to folders newer than a certain date, the /MAXAGE option is only used to copy files. We could use PowerShell command to copy folders newer than X days.
    Get-ChildItem <source folder> -Recurse | where {$_.PSIsContainer -eq "ture" -and $_.LastWriteTime -gt ($(Get-Date).Adddays(-X))} | foreach {copy $_.FullName <detination folder> }

  • Can I copy/move my Dreamweaver website content onto a new design or template?

Apparently the design of my website is not user friendly. I want to easily transfer its content onto a brand new design without all the coding difficulty. Is this possible? This is the website: http://apathykills.site11.com/MyMediaPage1.htm

    Vanillaman wrote:

The difficulty is a function of your knowledge of the code behind your structure and content.
The trickiest coding can be achieved using a three column model like this.
Simple Three Column CSS Layout (Split Sidebars) - Theme Foundation
Then you can cut & paste your content into the new structure.

  • HELP! My hard drive crashed, can I copy my iTunes library files to a new PC

My hard drive crashed, but I attached it as a slave drive using an older PC and I can see all of my files but I can't start any programs (iTunes) from this slave drive.
How can I copy iTunes music files and library to a removable drive, and then use that drive to restore it all in iTunes on another PC? I would like to keep my playlists too.
I have everything I want on my iPod too, can I just copy everything from my iPod to my new PC? Which is easier?

For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
Find out how to do that here.
How to copy iTunes purchases from an iPod to a computer.
For all other non purchased content (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.
    See: iPod Disk Use.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it is a little more involved than other methods.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.
    SharePod is also freeware.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

  • Can Bridge sort my images into folders based on an Exif date?

All my Adobe products are pre-CS/CS2 and I don't yet have access to Adobe Bridge. My trial copy has also timed out. However, I would like to know if Bridge has the capability to take a folder of images (Canon Raw) and move them to new folders based on the original exposure date as stored in the Exif metadata (ideally creating the required target folders automatically). I'm thinking in terms of one folder per year, probably with subfolders for each month.
I'm simply trying to avoid having all my images in a single humongous folder with Bridge re-creating (or at least re-displaying) thousands of thumbnails every time I just want to look at a few images. Sorting them into folders by date just seems a simple solution to that problem. However, I'd be very happy to hear about alternative image filing ideas.
Once I have used Bridge to create extended metadata for image categories, etc, I'm also assuming that Bridge will let me search for images that match defined criteria no matter how many folders those images are stored in.

I don't know of any functionality to do that in Bridge now; however, it certainly can be done via scripting.
Perhaps one of our forum contributors might want to take on a "picture sorter" script...

  • Can't copy write-protected folder to new location

After doing a clean-install of Snow Leopard, and restoring home directory from Time Machine, I am unable to use the Finder to copy certain write-protected folders to a new location. Folder and all contents are owned by me, and using the Terminal to *cp -r* the folder and its contents works just fine. Trying to Command-C and Command-V the folder to the Desktop, say, or to click-drag or option-click-drag the folder itself cause a grayed-out version of the folder to appear briefly on the Desktop, and then disappear with no dialog box, indicated error, or entry in the log files.
Interestingly, creating a new folder, changing it to read-only, and moving it with the Finder IS successful. This behavior only seems to be affecting files that were restored using Time Machine.
A screencapture of this behavior is at http://www.crashwhite.com/tmp/finder_bug.mov
    Any ideas? I'm mystified!
    Thanks...

Hi, V.K, and thanks for checking in. To respond to your questions:
    • chmodding to 755 or anything else that gives me write permission allows the move or copy to occur as expected.
    • chmodding to 444 is a means of archiving the state of a folder and its contents. I do this to avoid corrupting a year's worth of documents. In the past (w/ Tiger, Leopard, etc.), I've been able to copy an "archived" directory into the new writeable directory with no difficulty.
    • In Terminal:
    +$ ls -ladeO Documents/arc/edu/poly/poly\ 08-09/wasc/+
    *dr-xr-xr-x 3 rwhite rwhite - 102 Oct 11 11:16 Documents/arc/edu/poly/poly 08-09/wasc/*
    +$ ls -ladeO Desktop+
    *drwx------+ 15 rwhite rwhite - 510 Oct 11 13:19 Desktop*
    *0: group:everyone deny delete*
I am unfamiliar with ACL--hadn't actually ever heard of it until now--so I'm going to start digging about a bit. It would appear that the + at the end of the Desktop listing indicates that there is an ACL that is having some effect here.
Re: my installation, I began with a standard migration, but that process left some cruft in my system that was slowing the system (lots of log errors from old stuff that was no longer installed), so I did a clean install: wiped drive completely, installed new from Snow Leopard, and did a Restore of user directory from Time Machine. I believe that used Migration Assistant to migrate from TM, but it may have been that I simply did a Restore from TM.
Off to go research ACL a little more. Thanks for the tip, and any additional advice you might have!
    Cheers,
    Richard
