CORBA and RMI are "dead"?

Hi,
I'm a Comp. Sci. student taking a course in CORBA and RMI and was wondering how relevant these technologies are out in the real world? I have a friend in industry who tells me that these technologies are "dead". He says XML has taken over as a communications standard.
Also, I am in the design phase of developing a 3D online game and I want to know if CORBA or RMI is fast enough to be used in a realtime application such as this (let's say I want to make 10 remote method calls per second to each of 50 clients). Can someone aim me at some benchmarks or performance figures?

I can't speak about CORBA, but
o We have some very robust applictions written using RMI.
o We wonder if SUN is walking away from RMI totards JAX: an XML-based communications scheme.
2. Your problem is kind of under-specified, but
o the way you phrased it sounds like lots of callback from server to clients - an area RMI handles, but only very well on LANs.
o I suspect your performance will be more limited by network characteristics than by RMI. Unerneath, it's just TCPIP.

ITunes and Quicktime are dead

I've been using iTunes and QuickTime for over a year with no significant trouble.
Now, when I run iTunes, it won't launch. After a few seconds, I get a Windows error report popup that says:
"iTunes ahs encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the invonvenience." And it asks me to send an error report to tell Microsoft about this problem.
I tried installing Itunes 7.0.1 but that didn't help. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it but still no joy.
Also, now when I try to run QuickTime, nothing happens. If I monitor processes in Windows Task Manager, I can see it start, but then it goes away again.
I tried the stereo headphones fix in the FAQ at the top of this forum, but that didn't help. I tried deleting the iTunes folder under Docs & Settings\Owner\Application Data\Apple Computer but that didn't help either.
Any other suggestions? Short of formatting my hard drive and starting again? I am at my wits' end.
BTW, the problems started after I used the Gateway Recovery disk to do a non-destructive recovery, to fix an (apparently) unrelated problem (which fix, unforunately, didn't work).
Auuugh! I am addicted to podcasts and use my computer for hours every day. I am tearing my hair out!
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

hmmmm. i've seen a couple of those sets of symptoms now (on 7.0.0.70). there's a couple of things that are probably worth trying with it, and some experiments that are worth pursuing.
the first thing we'll try is a careful standalone QT 7.1.3 reinstall.
download and save a copy of the QT 7.1.3 standalone installer to your hard drive. (we'll run the install from there rather than online.) switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the install.
Quicktime 7.1.3 Installers … get the one that doesn’t mention itunes
if that install goes through okay, does your itunes launch properly again?
(if you get an error message on the QT standalone reinstall, let us know what it says. include error message numbers if you're getting any.)

Quicktime and iTunes are dead

I commited suicide, i guess, by creating a "custom" application folder, moving all system applications from their original location to another folder, named by me "aplications", and deleting the original empty aplication folder.
Don't ask me why , i still don't get it ......:-(
Then my iTunes and Quicktime died, meaning when i launch themthey do nothing, for ages, untill i have to force quit 'em
So i returned all of the system applications back to its "original" folder, reinstalled quicktime and itunes but still no go.
I have installed like 10 non systen aplications after that, and i'm really out of time, do you think i'll have to reinstall the whole system again or there's a workaround to make QT and iTunes back?

If you deleted the "original empty application folder," how did you then return items to it? Did you create a new Applications folder yourself? Or what?
At the root level you should have something like the following:
Applications
Library
System
Users
The Applications folder in turn should contain all the iApps at its root level. Also when you do GetInfo it should have the following permissions:
You can: Read & Write
Owner: system (locked)
Access: Read&Write
Group: admin
Access: R&W
Others: Read only
If you now have a root level Applications folder (and it must be Applications, not applications) that you created it could be the permissions are messed up. You can check with GetInfo and see if they match the above. You can try setting them to that yourself. I would also strongly advise you to run Disk Utilities from the Utilities folder (incidently, what did you do with THAT folder in your arrangement frenzy?) and run Repair Permissions. That might get things working again. In future do not change things that the system has done unless you know precisely why it is set that way and what will happen if you alter it.

"Modem Connected" but Mail and Safari are dead....

Hello Apple People, a newbie here. Hope this is a reasonable question.
I have successfully connected my SonyEricsson via Bluetooth to my MacMini, and via USB to my G3 iBook, with reported connection speeds of 2400bps on each machine (although I have read separately that this might be an unreliable figure). I am only looking to get a slow internet connection, but both the email and the browsing are timing out with no content to display. It's taken me about six hours to get the thing connected (what joy when it finally did!) but now it's behaving as though it is not connected at all. Any idea what might be stopping things getting through?
Any hints most welcome, and thanks for your time.

Forgot to mention the model (K800i) earlier, but having now been on the 'phone for the third time to Vodafone support, it seems that the problem lies not with my hardware or software but with the account settings on my mobile phone. The guy at tech support said to let this forum know that the key was to have the APN IAS (Internet Access Sock) added to my account. This they have now done on my account, although they said it would take up to 24 hours to activate.
I'll feedback if I get through.

Audigy2: Lineout 2 and 3 are d

Suddenly lineout #2 and #3 are dead on my Audigy 2 soundcard. Plugging any speaker into these ports does not work; plugging any speaker into lineout # works.
Is there any way to troubleshoot/repair this? Any common things I should look for in the computer? I have a CDRW and a DVD; not sure how their sound is hooked up. Sound on both is working fine. Running a 4: speaker system - or trying to.
Emachines desktop, 3G Athlon, G RAM, 2 monitors on one AGP video card, no problems.

Like 2 extra stereo? Like 2x stereo amps with their speakers.
**bleep** i've that too here.(2xfat amp with 2x set discospeakers).
It's a 4. setup. front left/right , and rear left/right. (lol like the Li've cards)
then get such a stereo portable camera cable (oone side a 4-pole 3.5mm jack , on other side 3 rca connectors(white/red/yellow).(prefer a cable with plastic jack connectors so that you can make them smaller with a file if nessesary).
analog out= stereo jack -> whiterca=frontleft redrca=frontright
analog out2= 4pole jack -> whiterca=rearleft yellowrca=rearright.
the signals on the wtite/red/yellow rca's of outputs 2 & 3 differ depending on your speaker setup in creative software.
above layout is for 4. setup (2x2 speakers/2xstereo amps)
(and afcourse in powerdvd6 (audio=spdif)

6channel set. read: get 3 stereo amplifiers and 3 speakersets. Prefer the same amplifiers(allround hifi stuff)and same loudspeakers(left/right same type...so that you have a clean soundbalance. Connect them to the Audigy2zs (ot other dolby decoded card)and enjoy 6 channel sound(like dolby 7. with centerspeaker and subwoofer merged into let's say front channels.

In firefox 4.0.1 the back and forward buttons are "dead". My system runs WindowsXP. I tried many times: safe-mode, upgrade from FirefoxF3.6., reinstallation in a new folder, creating new profile...........BUT THE PROBLEM IS STILL THERE.!!! What am I suppose to do? NoteQ in my another computer at home i have WinXP and the Firefox4.0.1 works perfectly!!!! Am I crazy???

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Another possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

thank you. I could not answer on friday, was not at office.
I tried according to the instructions of oracle ( http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E17236_01/epm.1112/pr_studio/frameset.htm?data_connection.html ). See comments:
To create an Essbase data source connection:
1. OK
Select Connection on the main SQR Production Reporting Studio screen.
The Create Data Connection wizard is displayed.

For example, you could enter Essbase to identify a connection to an Essbase data source.

On the third page, select an Essbase data source.
The wizard displays the available registries and data sources.
Seems some setting problems. We would check that. Any suggestions to that error??

HT1420 How do I deauthorize computers that are dead and buried?

iTunes says I have reached my limit of 5 computers, but at least 3 of those are dead and buried. I do have 2 hard drives that were authorized long ago, but are now slaved on other computers but itunes won't pick up the drm's. Any thoughts? Thanks

About De-authorizing Computers (contributed by user John Galt)
You can de-authorize individual computers, but only by using those computers. The only other option is to "de-authorize all" from your iTunes account.
1. Open iTunes on a computer
2. From the Store menu, select "View my Account..."
3. Sign in with your Apple ID and password.
4. Under "Computer Authorizations" select "De-authorize All".
5. Authorize each computer you still have, as you may require.
You may only do this once per year.
After you "de-authorize all" your authorized computers, re-authorize each one as required.
If you have de-authorized all computers and need to do it again, but your year has not elapsed, then contact: Apple - Support - iTunes - Contact Us.

I was wondering if towers are still being built in dead areas and roaming areas.

So, my iPad cannot roam in extended coverage and I was wondering if you guys are still building towers in dead areas with no service and roaming areas. It would be nice to access data service mostly everywhere, even in mountainous areas. So I was wondering if you guys are fixing the roaming and dead areas. I think every town in the United States needs coverage also in parks like the grand canyon, so I was wondering about that. Thanks!

Can someone help me understand and analyze the marshaling techniques of CORBA, RMI and RMI-IIOP??

RMI/JRMP is easy, just read the RMI Specification:

HT4628 how to reinstall Mountain Lion if ethernet and wifi are both dead

For unknown reason my MBP network connection keep dropping on both Ethernet and WIFI after i came back from overseas. Been trying to recreate the network setting and retry, it works for a few seconds then went dead. Thinking of reinstalling OSX but, not sure how to perform it since both ethernet and wifi are both sort of dead.
Any advise will be appreciated.

Head to your System Preferences > Network > Advanced and delete all the network connections.
Next head to your System Preferences > Data and Time and make sure it's correct and being updated with Apple's time server for your location.
Reboot and check the data and time is correct (PRAM reset is in order if it's not)
Connect via wifi and save the password in your Keychain when it asks.

These units indicate error messages by combination of blinking light. SO most likely has nothing to do withpanel cables and stuff. The pattern you are recieving indicates a scanner failure. Check HERE for a page with the differant blinking patterns and for possible solutions.

Jini and Rmi utilisation for a particulary case..

I have to write a application which is going to connect our server to different hospitals infromatque system.
The application would provide a user interface in hospital side wich is going to make them able to send us a inventory file(fromated differently for each hospital with their own informatiqe system).
The application have also to change the the file format befor stored in our data-base(each information have to go to different table)
My supervisor ask me to look Jini and Rmi technologie for this application..
So far i read some information about both technologie..but still i'm wondering my self is Jini or Rmi have a real use in this case.
If your are masterd in those technologie and java networking device woud you help me up ?
Could you tell me if those technologie have to be realy use in this case or there is other solution with java programming.

Jini is a high level framework that a computer to easily locate a service provider in a network and get the service. So your case does not need such a framework because in your case, just like most of todays application, the service is provided only by your server and you know where it is and what it does. You just need something a one level lower than Jini that actually does the communication - RMI. Jini runs only top of any other lower level protocol including RMI. Detailed description of Jini:
Jini technology is an architecture for the construction of systems from objects and networks. The Jini architecture lets programs use services in a network without knowing anything about the wire protocol that the service uses. One implementation of a service might be XML-based, and another RMI-based, and a third CORBA-based. The client is, in effect, taught by each service how to talk to it. A service is defined by its programming API, declared as a Java programming language interface.
When a service is plugged into a network of Jini technology-enabled services and/or devices, it advertises itself by publishing a Java programming language object that implements the service API. This object's implementation can work in any way the service chooses. The client finds services by looking for an object that supports the API. When it gets the service's published object, it will download any code it needs in order to talk to the service, thereby learning how to talk to the particular service implementation via the API. The programmer who implements the service chooses how to translate an API request into bits on the wire using UPnP, RMI, CORBA, or a private protocol.
In other words, the Jini architecture uses objects that move around the network to make each service, as well as the entire network of services, adaptable to new strategies over time.

I have to develop a CORBA server connected to a database.Could you please suggest me how to develop this server using JDBC.What should be the components of the IDL.How to include ResultSet and Connection in IDL? What other things to be included in IDL?

I assume you want to implement a very generic JDBC on CORBA and not any specific application that uses JDBC. First of all ResultSet,Connection and other JDBC interfaces are Java objects and there is no direct support for these objects in CORBA. RMI maybe a better option if u want to pass java objects around( Iam not sure if u can pass ResultSet directly even with RMI). You may have to wrap all JDBC interfaces in your own interfaces and invoke the actual jdbc methods on the server side. If you want to use CORBA and not RMI,then you have to provide custom methods to fetch results of a SQL query such as getNext(),you have to be very careful as to how atomic you want each method to be. If every method makes a netwrok call then it will be very slow. There is atleast one such implementation of JDBC on CORBA. Try doing a search in google
