Core data: making object related to another object when a property changes

ok, say with core data I have object1 and it has a to-many relationship with object2
and when property1 if object1 changes then the number of/contents of the related object2 changes as well
think of a box of chocolate... object1 is the box and object2 is the chocolate... object1 has a string property that is the colour of the chocolate and when it changes the chocolate objects need to change accordingly
maybe not the best example but you guys should get the idea
I'm not sure how to do this without causing errors
what I did initially was this:
-(NSString*)words {
printf("retrieving words
[self willAccessValueForKey: @"words"];
NSString* s = words;
[self didAccessValueForKey: @"words"];
return s;
-(void)setWords: (NSString*)newWords {
printf("setting words
[self willChangeValueForKey: @"words"];
words = newWords;
[self didChangeValueForKey: @"words"];
- (void)setNilValueForKey:(NSString *)key {
printf("in nil value
if ([key isEqualToString:@"words"]) {
self.words = @"";
else {
[super setNilValueForKey:key];
which has broken the redo
I went ahead anyway and redone the setWords
-(void)setWords: (NSString*)newWords {
[self willChangeValueForKey: @"words"];
words = newWords;
[self didChangeValueForKey: @"words"];
// NSManagedObjectContext *managedObjectContext = [self managedObjectContext];
// [[managedObjectContext undoManager] disableUndoRegistration];
NSArray* linesWords = [newWords componentsSeparatedByString: @" "];
NSSet* newContainsWords = [NSSet set];
[self removeContainsWords: self.containsWords];
for(unsigned int i = 0; i < [linesWords count]; i++) {
NSEntityDescription* entity = [NSEntityDescription insertNewObjectForEntityForName: @"AtomWord"
inManagedObjectContext: managedObjectContext];
AtomWord* wordEntity = (AtomWord*)entity;
wordEntity.word = [linesWords objectAtIndex: i];
newContainsWords = [newContainsWords setByAddingObject: wordEntity];
[self addContainsWords: newContainsWords];
// [managedObjectContext processPendingChanges];
// [[managedObjectContext undoManager] enableUndoRegistration];
this too also broke the redo
I uncommented the undo manager stuff to see what would happen, thinking it would group everything together for the undo-redo
but instead it made two copies of object1...
what's the best way to do this?

I don't see an option to upload images so I'm going to assume you can see this ascii representation of it
|----------------| |----------------|
| Line | | Word |
|----------------| |----------------|
|v Attributes | |v Attributes |
|lineOfWords | |theWord |
|----------------| |----------------|
|v RelationShips | |v RelationShips |
|madeUpOf |<----->>|containedIn |
|----------------| |----------------|
lineOfWords and theWord are string properties
when lineOfWords changes I need the set of Words it contains to change to reflect the change in lineOfWords
The reason I need words to be an entity itself is because each word has attributes (not shown there) that are specific to each word
This is how I made the schema, I'm not sure how or if you can reflect the relationship between the property and list or if there is a better way to do it...

  • Best practice for core data managed objects

    Hello
    I'd like to konw if there is a document available listing the good practices when managing core data managed objects.
    For example should I keep those objects in memory in a singleton class, or save thme to the DB and load them when needed, ... I am trying to figure out how to manage Annotation views representing managed objects when using the MapKit.

    We have a tool built in excel + Powerquery version 2.18.3874.242 - 32 Bit (No PowerPivot) using data load to data model (not to workbook). There are data filters linked to excel cells, inserted in OData query before data is pulled.
    The Excel tool uses organisational credentials to authenticate.

    The tool runs for all users as long as they do not upgrade to PowerQuery_2.20.3945.242 (32-bit).
    Once upgraded users can no longer get the data to load to the Model. Data still loads to the Workbook but the model breaks down. Resetting load to data model erases all measures.
    Here are the exact errors users get:

    Hello,
    does anybody knows if it is possible to change the icon that is displayed beside the date/time object (when you click on it the calendar opens)? My customer stated that it is a bit confusing because it looks like a normal dropdown, not like a calendar.

    Clarify me whether u want to save this date field to only a single table or two tables.

  • Problem with core data and attribute name "description"

    I have spent hours tying to figure out this problem.
    It appears that is you name an attribute "description", there can be problems at run-time.
    Perhaps, it is related to how I am doing things and letting interface builder do all the bindings.
    I create a core data application in Xcode.
    I create the entity with some attributes in Xcode and then I launch interface builder. I drag a "core data entity" object to the application window. I add a "Master/Detail View".
    I save the files and do a compile. When I click on the "add" button, something goes wrong and GDB launches and loads the stack frame into the debugger.
    I am using Xcode 3.1.2.

    description is the name of a method in the NSObject protocol; try to use another name for your attribute in CoreData, for example myDescription.

  • Edit and save a Core Data entity?

    Sorry if this is a fairly obvious issue, but I honestly can't find anything..
    Every sample Core Data application I've come across has examples of inserting and deleting entities/objects. But I cannot find anything about editing and saving some attributes of an existing object. Is this possible??
    I'm using default core data/managed objects, not custom classes yet. I can insert, view, and delete objects from the context. But I want to be able to edit attributes, and NOT in a table cell. I want to open the object in a separate window (which I can do), edit the attributes in that window, and click a "Save" button to update the attributes of that particular object. I can't find anything that shows me how.
    I am thinking a work-around would be to remove the existing object and just create a new object with the data, but if I have relationships to other objects, it seems like doing that would mess them up. My other train of thought is, if I can't do this with default core data objects, what CAN I do it with? Do I need to create custom classes for the objects, or do I need to use an SQL database separately?
    Thanks...

    Apple has this to say about that...
    Entity-relationship modeling is a way to describe data structures that can be mapped to an object-oriented system. Since it comes from the database world, there is some terminology that is associated with it that you may not be familiar with. These terms are:
    Entities, specific pieces of information in a data model.
    Attributes, the components of an entity. These are usually simple scalar types, such as int, float, or double; C structures such as char *, NSPoint; or an instance of a primitive class, such as NSString, or NSNumber.
    Relationships, references that an entity can have to other entities. These relationships can be optional or required as well as one-to-one or one-to-many.
    Properties, a collective term for attributes and relationships.
    -=-
    Entities and Managed Objects
    Each entity definition in a managed object model requires the name of the entity and the name of the class used at runtime to represent that entity.

    do I need to use an SQL database separately?
    Core Data support three different kinds of data store formats to save managed objects contexts to. These formats are:
    • XML file format
    • Binary archive file format
    • SQLite database file format
    ...which are you using now? That is a rhetorical question for you to ponder, actually.

  • Save NSArray into Core Data object

    How do I go about saving an array in a core data store?

    I'm not proficient, but you have to make a core data model in the interface for that which is like making an xml file, but with fields (very easy), and then you have to make a number of objects that handle the memory of the variables. It's something like one object for a persistent store, and then one object that mangages the persistent store and then a persistent store object or something. It's actually very clear if you read up on it in the documentation under Core Data or Persistant Store.

  • Core Data: doing a FetchRequest causes multiple object entries

    Pretty new to Core Data but I have a simple model and associated table view and controllers all hooked up and working with no code. I wanted to do the classic "set the date to today's date" when I add an object to my table.
    I subclassed my NSManagedObject entity and put in the awakeFromInsert method to set the date attribute to now. Works great. Click the Add button and I get a new entry set with it's date property set to today's date.
    I wanted to add a little more initialization by setting another attribute to the value of an attribute in another entity in the same awakeFromInsert method. So, I created a FetchRequest and Fetched the other Entity and pulled off the 0th object from the array. That works fine but now when I click the Add button to add an entry to my list, I get two entries. Each time I click the Add button I get two more entries.
    I can comment out the FetchRequest call and I'm back to one entry per Add click. I set a breakpoint in the awakeFromInsert and it only hits once.
    I'm stumped. There's virtually no code in this project except for the awakeFromInsert method and I can't figure out why I get two entries.
    Thanks for any help.

    More Info: The two entries are actually pointing to the same object. If I save the context and restart, I only have one entry (I can also see this by looking at the XML store).
    It seems that the NSTableView is getting messed up somehow after the FetchRequest. Still stumped.

  • Core Data: Get Managed Object by unique part of the objectID

    In my Core Data application, I need to get the pointers to different managed objects whose CoreData objectIDs end with the number I provide. e.g.:
    Get the Person object whose objectID ends with unique number 317. The whole ID is:
    <x-coredata://A3EDF6C1-229D-4658-A04E-598ADF1C749A/Person/p317>
    or I need to get Department object, which ends with 5; again full ID is:
    <x-coredata://A3EDF6C1-229D-4658-A04E-598ADF1C749A/Department/p5>
    These numbers are actually primary keys in the SQLite database's tables and I can see them if I open the database directly with sqlite3, and I can of course select the records using SQL query;
    *but I can not figure out how to get these objects using CoreData. I guess I should create the NSPredicate for the fetch request; but I don't know how to write the predicate which will give me the exact object based on the unique part of the objectID*
    As I understand, objectIDs are not object's "normal" attributes.
    Please help. Thanks in advance.

    I think you are supposed to consider the entire ID to be unique. You can retrieve the associated object using "objectWithID:" from NSManagedObjectContext.
    The problem is that I am parsing the text from another application and I have only the "unique part" at hand and not the whole objectID. So, I need to cope with that.
    What I see is that the IDs of every entity start with the same text, e.g. here are the IDs of two different entities:
    <x-coredata://A3EDF6C1-229D-4658-A04E-598ADF1C749A/Person/p317>
    <x-coredata://A3EDF6C1-229D-4658-A04E-598ADF1C749A/Department/p5>
    As you see, the difference is only in the end, after the entity names "Paper" and "Department". But this is my case and I am not completely sure that this will hold true for EVERY future installation on any system for every entity.
    *Question: will the part like <x-coredata://A3EDF6C1-229D-4658-A04E-598ADF1C749A be constant for the particular installation, for every entity/object?*
    If YES, then I will:
    - after getting any/first object, extract the non-unique part, i.e. <x-coredata...749A which is the same for every object in this particular installation on this particular computer
    - get the unique part, i.e. /Person/p317, /Person/p23, /Department/p5 etc.
    - synthesize the "real ID" by appending these two strings
    - ask managedObjectContext to return the object with this ID
    - continue with the acquired object
    How does it sound? Will this work on other computers?
    P.S. FYI: the coredata of this program has only one store i.e. all the data are stored in single sqlite file.

  • IPhone core data - fetched managed objects not being autoreleased on device (fine on simulator)

    I'm currently struggling with a core data issue with my app that defies (my) logic. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong but can't see what. I am doing a basic executeFetchRequest on my core data entity, but the array of managed objects returned never seems to be released ONLY when I run it on the iPhone, under the simulator it works exactly as expected. This is despite using an NSAutoreleasePool to ensure the memory footprint is minimised. I have also checked with Instruments and there are no leaks, just ever increasing allocations of memory (by '[NSManagedObject(_PFDynamicAccessorsAndPropertySupport) allocWithEntity:]'). In my actual app this eventually leads to a didReceiveMemoryWarning call. I have produced a minimal program that reproduces the problem below. I have tried various things such as faulting all the objects before draining the pool, but with no joy. If I provide an NSError pointer to the fetch no error is returned. There are no background threads running.

    The amount of free memory reduces each time round the loop in proportion to the managed objects I fetch e.g. if I fetch twice as many objects then the free memory reduces twice as quickly - so I'm pretty confident it is the managed objects that are not being released. Note that the entities that are being fetched are very basic, just two attributes, a string and a 16 bit integer. There are 1000 of them being fetched in the examples above. The code I used to generate them is as follows:
    // Create test entities
    for(int i=0; i<1000; i++) {
        id entity = [NSEntityDescription insertNewObjectForEntityForName:@"TestEntity" inManagedObjectContext:context];
        [entity setValue:[NSString stringWithFormat:@"%d",i] forKey:@"name"];
        [entity setValue:[NSNumber numberWithInt:i] forKey:@"value"];
    if (![context save:nil]) {
        NSLog(@"Couldn't save");
    If anyone can explain to me what is going on I'd be very grateful! This issue is the only only one holding up the release of my app. It works beautifully on the simulator!!
    Please let me know if there's any more info I can supply.

    Update: I modified the above code so that the fetch (and looppool etc.) take place when a timer fires. This means that the fetches aren't blocked in viewDidLoad.
    The result of this is that the issue happens exactly as before, but the applicationDidReceiveMemoryWarning is fired as expected:

  • Data Access Object for Data Warehouse?

    Hi,
    Does anyone know how the DAO pattern looks like when it is used for a data warehouse rather than a normal transactional database?
    Normally we have something like CustomerDAO or ProductDAO in the DAO pattern, but for data warehouse applications, JOINs are used and multiple tables are queried, for example, a query may contains data from the Customer, Product and Time table, what should the DAO class be named? CustomerProductTimeDAO?? Any difference in other parts of the pattern?
    Thanks in advance.
    SK

    In my opinion, there are no differences in the Data Access Object design pattern which have any thing to do with any characteristic of its implementation or the storage format of the data the pattern is designed to function with.
    The core pupose of the DAO design pattern is to encapsulate data access code and separate it from the business logic code of the application. A DAO implementation might vary from application to application. The design pattern does not specify any implementation details. A DAO implementation can be applied to group of XML data files, an Excel-based CSV file, a relational database, or an OS file system. The design is the same for all these, it is the implementation that varies.
    The core difference between an operational database and a strategic data warehouse is the purpose of why and how the data is used. It is not so much a technical difference. The relational design may vary however, there may be more tables amd ternary relationships in a data warehouse to support more fine-tuned queries; there may be less tables in a operational database to support insert/add efficiencies.
    The DAO implementation for a data warehouse would be based on the model of the databases. However the tables are set up, that is how the DAO is coded.

  • Data access Objects

    Deepak,
    Can you throw some light on the 'Data access Objects" pattern? and how it can be used with Entity beans? I am trying to apply this to the following scenario and having a hard time.
    We need users to be transparent of the data retrieval from various sources like oracle database, flat files or legacy storage. If I use the data access object pattern it is easier to use java classes in place of entity beans.
    Thanks
    Shreyas Kamat

    Shreyas,
    [For those not familiar with our Data Access Object Pattern, the
    beta version of the pattern is available on JDC (needs JDC login) at:
    http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/restricted/patterns/DataAccessObject.html]
    Data Access Objects (or DAOs) are objects that hide the database
    implementation from data clients. Data clients are any objects
    that need to retrieve data from the data source. And the data source
    could be anything that contains data, not necessarily only RDBMSs.
    For example, an external system could be a data source.
    Now using DAOs with Entity beans is applicable only in bean-managed
    persistence (BMP) scenario. In BMP, the entity beans are responsible
    to provide the data load and store implementation in the ejbLoad()
    and ejbStore() methods of the bean implementation. Without using
    the DAOs, the entity bean class will contain all the JDBC code (assuming
    that the data source is an RDBMS), SQL, etc. This makes the
    entity bean class bloated and difficult to manage when changes
    are made to the data logic. In addition, this tightly couples the
    data source implementation with the entity bean implementation.
    By using DAOs, the ejbStore() and ejbLoad() methods are much
    simpler. Also, it is easier to change from one datasource implementation
    to another by replacing the DAOs. Further flexibility is possible
    by employing the DAO factory strategy as described in the DAO pattern
    in our catalog.
    Coming back to you point about making the data access transparent
    to the clients; it is possible to achieve this by using DAO and
    DAO factory strategy. In the current version of the pattern,
    included in the book, we provide sample code to show how
    to design DAO classes and to apply DAO factory strategy.
    On your last point about using java classes instead of entity beans, this
    is not the intention of the DAO pattern. Entity beans serve a different
    purpose in the architecture as coarse-grained transactional components.
    entity beans use DAOs in BMP implementations, but are not replaced
    by DAOs. However, DAO classes are reusable. The same DAO that is
    used by an entity bean to retrieve some data in one application scenario,
    can be reused by a servlet in another application scenario
    that needs the same data, but does not use entity beans.
    So bottom line is that DAOs address the need to data access and
    manipulation and work together with entity beans in BMP implementations.
    thanks,

  • How to increase the number of data Business Object can pull for a report?

    Hi,
    I would like to ask around how to increase the number of data Business Object can pull for a report. I have a report which pulls data depending on the date range (ex. From 01/01/2007 - 01/10/2007). But, when the data that is pulled exceeds 5000, the report fails. Is there anyway to increase the number of data that BO can pull?
    Thanks

    Bobby,
       to my knowledge we can't change that. Let me explain this, we have setting in the source system for DS default Data Transfer. there we will assign the processes. if you want to assign 4 you need to change the setting in the source system. For flat files we can change in BW System. We can maintain the setting in the Infopackage level(wht we are assigned in the Source System), but we can't change the process.
    in order to check the setting in source system  SBIW--> General Settings --> Control Parameters for Data Transfer.
    we need to change here, this will effect to all the Data Sources. Before making changes check with your basis.
    All the best.

  • Dynamically built query on execution How to save the data in Object Type

    Hi,
    In pl/sql I am building and executing a query dynamically. How can I stored the output of the query in object type. I have defined the following object type and need to store the
    output of the query in it. Here is the Object Type I have
    CREATE OR REPLACE TYPE DEMO.FIRST_RECORDTYPE AS OBJECT(
    pkid NUMBER,
    pkname VARCHAR2(100);
    pkcity VARCHAR2(100);
    pkcounty VARCHAR2(100)
    CREATE OR REPLACE TYPE DEMO.FIRST_RECORDTYPETAB AS TABLE OF FIRST_RECORDTYPE;Here is the query generated at runtime and is inside a LOOP
    --I initialize my Object Type*
    data := new FIRST_RECORDTYPETAB();
    FOR some_cursor IN c_get_ids (username)
    LOOP
    x_context_count := x_context_count + 1;
    -- here I build the query dynamically and the same query generated is
    sql_query := 'SELECT pkid as pid ,pkname as pname,pkcity as pcity, pkcounty as pcounty FROM cities WHERE passed = <this value changes on every iteration of the cursor>'
    -- and now I need to execute the above query but need to store the output
    EXECUTE IMMEDIATE sql_query
    INTO *<I need to save the out put in the Type I defined>*
    END LOOP;
    How can I save the output of the dynamically built query in the Object Type. As I am looping so the type can have several records.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks
