CPU high system usage
My laptop regularly slows way down and gets super choppy, and the Activity Monitor shows high system percentage during, usually up into the 70s. This happens when I try to watch videos online, play games, or even load too many pages at once. I have to close the tab or quit the application to get it going again. This occurs with all applications (Word, Excel, games, etc). Even after I install updates and restart I get the same problem. I've tried eliminating tabs and applications up at once, tried clearing space and uninstalling applications - same issue.
The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below are some possible causes for the condition.
Throttling
When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or a low-voltage reading from the battery, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to
a buildup of dust on the logic board
high ambient temperature
a worn-out or faulty battery in a portable
the malfunction of a cooling fan, a temperature sensor, or a voltage sensor
Note that if the problem is caused by a sensor, there may be no actual overheating or undervoltage.
If the computer is portable, test with and without the AC adapter connected. If kernel_task hogs the processor only on battery power, the fault is in the battery or the logic board. If it happens only on AC power, charging is causing the machine to heat up. That may be normal on some models. CPU usage should drop when charging is complete.
Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a bad fan or sensor.
If nothing is wrong with the hardware, then whatever you can do to improve cooling may help.
Installed software
User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. That category includes virtualization software, such as Parallels and VMware, as well as most commercial "anti-virus" products. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or starting in safe mode. Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or testing in safe mode may not be as easy as you think.
Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.
External display
Connecting an external LCD display to some MacBook Pro models may cause this issue. If applicable, test by disconnecting the display. You might get better results with a newer LED display.

High system(kernel) usage all the time! but windows runs normal
My 2013 MBA has a very high system usage all the time, and its very slow, and fan starts working at high speed at startup..
I did a clean install of both Mavericks and Mountain lion, and still got the same problem..
Also I'm using boot camp (windows 8.1) and it runs normal!!! I'm only having this trouble using OSX
Note: I had a liquid spill on it.Please post the EtreCheck output

You might also want to run Applications -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor and see if there is a process or processes that are running with high CPU loads.
The fans generally run fast and loud when the CPU is generating a lot of heat, and that generally only happens when apps are pushing the CPU to high percentages.
You could also look in the Applications -> Utilities -> Console for log entries that are frequently repeating, which might indicate a process that keeps failing and restarting again and again and ... -
I have a brand new macbook pro, had it about 3 wks so I'm frustrated to be having problems already. My CPU system usage stays around 89%, but my user is like 3%. Haven't downloaded any big apps or anything onto it. Imported my itunes library, not a huge one. Anyway I'm frustrated and annoyed because my computer is running very slow and it's stupid.
Yeah, I know what you're talking about, but there's nothing there that is using 89%. Right now I have 2 apps running. Activity monitor, Safari. Activity monitor is showing 3.2%, Safari 1.3%. The rest of the stuff is either 0 or 0.01.
Here's a list of the other things listed (which are running at 0.00-0.01%)

UserEventAgent
SystemUIServer

Extremely high system CPU load on my new 2012 Macbook Pro
I just brought my brand new 2012 Macbook Pro (non-retina) home from the store and noticed that it was running INCREDIBLY slow. I opened up the activity monitor and found that the system's CPU load is consistently around 70%-90%. I haven't installed any software outside of google chrome, although the issue was happening even before I installed google chrome.
Here are screenshots of my macbook's specs
Here's a screenshot of the processes sorted by %CPU
Here's a screenshot of the processes sorted by CPU Time
Any idea what would cause such a high system CPU load? Again I haven't installed any software outside of google chrome, and I don't have anything hooked up to my Macbook. This issue happens when my Macbook is both plugged and unplugged and I haven't noticed any overheating or extensive fan use.harkiamsuperman,
your first image shows Chrome using over half of the CPU time. Note that Chrome on Mavericks is more CPU-intensive than other browsers, since Google does not provide a 64-bit version of the app for OS X.
Since you’ve just brought your MacBook Pro home, perhaps Spotlight is doing its initial indexing of your internal disk; that could be one possible explanation. If that is the cause, then your CPU usage should settle down after it finishes.
If you’d like to try something simple and immediate, you could reset your MacBook Pro’s System Management Controller, to see if that makes a difference. -
Macbook Pro CPU system usage up to 98% for no reason
Hi
I really hope someone can help me out here as I am really lost at the moment. This is my first post so I apologise in advance in case I posted in the wrong forum.
I updated my Macbook Pro (late 07 model) last week with 10.5.7 and smc 1.3 (software update not combo). My MBP has 4GB ram, all previous updates installed without any hitches and no new programs installed.
Ever since then I have been having trouble with my MBP, mainly it would get really sluggish after one hour (almost to the second, no kidding, I timed it). I use Activity Monitor and Console to see what's hogging the machine can see that the CPU system usage goes to 95%+ while no new activities/programs have been launched.
I tried many 'remedies' such as reinstalled the update using the combo download, disabled spotlight, disabled mobileme, reset smc/pram, turned off screen sharing and all to no avail.
I reside in Asia bought my MBP here and therefore don't get to call Apple and ask their technicians and the two advises I got from the dealers here are (1) I am now a proud owner of a MBP brick and (2) I might get a chance to 'resurrect' it when there's a smc 1.4 update.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.
It then getsYes you are right. I did not ask AM to 'Show All Processes' just 'My Processes'. After reading your post I restarted my MBP, started AM straight away, chose 'Show All Processes' and waited... Sure enough, the most likely 'culprit' is 'AgentDaemon'.
After some googling I found that it maybe related to a program called 'Network Magic' which I have been using for a year and a half and survived previous system upgrades by Apple.
I shall look for a way to safely and cleanly remove this program from my system.
Thank you very much for your help.
Cheers.

Z10 - High CPU and Battery Usage with BBM
I recently updated my Z10 (UK and EE Carrier) to 10.2.1.3062 and every day or so I am getting very high CPU and Battery Usage with BBM running in the background.
I have never used BBM and have no active or past conversations or contacts.
This morning, it used around 60% battery in under 3 hours, with 95% of that time sat at 'idle' in my pocket.
Sometimes its after I have connected it to my car stereo (charging and streaming music via USB) on an Alpine CDA-117Ri, but I dont think thats a cause.

Very high memory usage..possible memory leak? Solaris 10 8/07 x64
Hi,
I noticed yesterday that my machine was becoming increasingly slow, where once it was pretty snappy. It's a Compaq SR5250NX with 1GB of RAM. Upon checking vmstat, I noticed that the "Free" column was ~191MB. Now, the only applications I had open were FireFox 2.0.11, GAIM, and StarOffice. I closed all of them, and the number reported in the "Free" column became approximately 195MB. "Pagefile" was about 5.5x that size. There were no other applications running and it's a single user machine, so I was the only one logged in. System uptime: 9 days.
I logged out, logged back in, to see if that had an affect. It did not. Rebooted and obviously, that fixed it. Now with only FireFox, GAIM, and a terminal open, vmstat reports "Free" as ~450MB. I've noticed if I run vmstat every few seconds, the "Free" total keeps going down. Example:

Any tips, tricks, advice, on which way to go with this?
Thanks!Apologies for the delayed reply. School has been keeping me nice and busy.

In any event, we can see that FireFox is sucking up 145MB (??!?!!? crazy...) XSun, 200MB, and java 190MB. I'm running Java Desktop System (Release 3) so I assume that is what accounts for the the high memory usage RE: java process. But, XSun, 200MB?
Is this normal and I just need to toss another gig in, or what?

Hi,
Before everything, two things:
1. I'm not a native english speaker so i may have some problems to speak properly/as objective as i'd like to.
2 . I'm writing in this section because i don't know the cause of my pc issues so i can't categorize them.
Now, my computer is a Toshiba satellite L755-S5244, Windows 7 Home premium 64 bits, Intel pentium CPU B940 2Ghz, 4 Gb RAM, and I'm writing this message using it.
I bought the laptop in December of 2011 and at the beggining it was working normally. Someone else used the computer these last months and he left the pc without antivirus protection; when i installed one (Avast) and start to analyze the pc it suddenly shutted down. It wasn't able to boot, so after some trys to restore/enter in safe mode I finally used the Toshiba Recovery Wizard to get the pc to the original factory settings. The process was sucessfull, so the first thing i did after finish the process was install a new antivirus (this time i used Kaspersky Pure) and the the analysis showed no threats as i expected.
However, before the recovery process i realized of some slow performance on the computer, like talking a bit too long to opening files or menus, control panel... almost anything was opening with a little delay even just after start the pc. This problem continued even after the recovery process. Also, an online game -League of legends- which was working fine when i just bought the pc, developed some issue: the screen and the audio randomly frezees for like 3-5 seconds. These problems seems to be related between each other.
But that wasn't all. After the recovery to the original factory settings, i just installed a few things:
-Kaspersky Pure 2.0, CCleaner (free), Mozila Firefox, and League of legends.
Later I also installed Microsoft Office 2010.
The antivirus showed no threats. The game kept with the freeze thing.
And 2 days ago i was playing league of legends and downloading Skype when the pc suddenly got too slow. I restarted it. After the restart it took a long time to boot, and before the windows login screen loaded there was a black screen where only the mouse was showed; the start-up was slow too, (this one showed a blue screen with the mouse too -but not BSOD-) all this took like 15-20 minutes; that never happened before so i restarted the computer again but the problem was the same: slow boot, slow desktop start-up (let's not even talk about opening something).
I went to the repair menu (f8) and try to restore the system but it didn't change anything. I checked for memory issues but there wasn't. I looked also for starting problems but the repair didn't find anything. All in there was saying: "the computer performance seems normal", but it wasn't. Like entering to windows in normal mode was talking to long, i tried the safe mode. It was also slow but not that much. When i entered, a system restore which i wasn't able to performance before in normal mode popped-up and said that the system was restored sucessfully to the first restore point -just after the factory recovery, but it apparently didn't fix the slow bot issue.
Even in safe mode the software was working slow so i decided to go for the toshiba recovery wizard again, and looked in here, the forums -and the rest of the net- for problems like mine.
This time the Toshiba Recovery Wizard took like ages to finish. 3 hours just for recovering, and like 7 more hours just installing the drivers. The boot/start-up was still slow, so i think this was the cause of the slow recovery because the wizard restarts the computer a lot.
When the factory settings recovery finished, the first boot was slow, also the start up, the programs, the start menu, the control panel, ... everything was slow the first time i opened it. If i keep using the same program, it seems normal, but randomly freezes if i select some option, of press something (like this browser, google chrome, even now when i'm writing this message or before where i was registering into the forums). As obvious, because this slow performance i'm really not comfortable using this computer.
I used the HDD SDD Alert but it says the HDD is working fine (the hard drive doesn't make weirds sounds, i almost don't hear it at all); also i did a PC Diagnostic with the PC diagnostic tool and everything passed the test. I can't think of virus/malware because i did the recovery wizard, twice. I just installed Avast again and it didn't find anything. With the task manager i noticed of a high pc usage (almost always 100%) was showing for a really short moment when/after the computer freezes.
So, i don't know how to solve this slow performance.
The last thing i did was download those speed-up softwares: SpeedUpMyPc, RegCurePro, SpeedyPC pro and Pareto logic Health Advisor. They scanned the pc for free and found like 100 system performance issues, but I'm not able to use these programms to fix the issues if i dont buy them. Also i'm not even sure if that will fix my problems.
That's why i'm here, looking for a way to identify/fix them. One last thing: all this time i've been checking the temperature of the laptop but is never hot -now is not even warm. Now i'm afraid of restarting the PC again cuz i know it will take a long time to get into a kinda stable performance like right now.
So that's all. If you read all this, have my thanks. Also, any help would be really appreciated it.
EDIT:
A new thing happened. When i try to installed league of legends, the setup told me that my hard drive may be corrupted and the file won't copy, i skip it a few times but the installation took a long of time (half hour) and the error kept ocurring. I hope this can may be a clue about what is happening to my pc.Satellite L755-S5244
If you restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media and still have trouble, then you know it's not due to software.
the setup told me that my hard drive may be corrupted and the file won't copy, i skip it a few times but the installation took a long of time (half hour) and the error kept ocurring.
In particular, that sort of thing occurs when a hard drive is failing. Time to call Toshiba's tech support at 1-800-457-7777 (from the US) or 1-949-859-4273 (from outside the US).

Sudden high memory usage, can't find cause
I did a big update yesterday, and today I've started to notice very high memory usage. I wasn't keeping track before so I can't say how much it increased, but I've never had problems before, and the slowness and lack of responsiveness have been noticeable, though I haven't ruled out other possible causes for that. Here's the output of 'free -m':
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 7971 7826 144 0 1 149
-/+ buffers/cache: 7674 296
Swap: 9215 458 8757
It wasn't as bad as that right after startup, though usage still seemed suspiciously high. What makes this whole thing a mystery to me is that none of my running processes seem to be using that much memory! Here's the output of 'top -b -n 1':

Reverting to the 13.6 version solved the problem. Lesson learned: if there's a ton of memory being used that isn't owned by a running process, start looking for bug reports involving drivers. Especially drivers known for being, well, pretty bad. Was there any method I could have used that would have told me that Catalyst was using all my ram, or is kernel-space memory usage pretty much a black box?

Hey Guys, I been having problems with my mac. I'm running 10.8.5 on my 2008 Power mac tower and recently I have been having problems with my mac
going real slow. I opened Activity Monitor and Noticed something called "Installer" and it was using 90% of my memory and the only thing I can do is quit the process. Does anyone know why this is happening?I ran EtreCheck and i'll post my results. I will add more ram after I fix the problem, and adding an SSD is a good option. I thought about it but
I was holding off because I was thinking of buying a new computer. I will try to keep my sysstem drive clean in the future. After Linc Davis posted about the Trojan i'm planning of doing that. I have a cloned mac drive, I updated the other day using SuperDuper.
My EtreCheck info
Problem description:
“Installer” app is running using High Memory Usage.
EtreCheck version: 2.0.11 (98)

KDE 4.7: very slow and high disk usage
Since upgrade to KDE 4.7 on my i686 laptop, my system behaves weirdly. I noticed a slow down caused by a very high disk usage: when the HDD spins the cpu usage reported by the CPU monitor plasmoid is very high (~ 50%), while top reports a very small CPU load. Another strange symptom is that, when I try to close the session, the system freezes for about 15 seconds before the logout/shutdown/restart dialog window appears, again with HDD spinning furiously. If I exit the dialog window and then try to close session again it works smoothly, so I think some caching is at work at second try.
This is very painful since it slows down my workflow. Since now I tried to:
- disable nepomuk, strigi and all that using the nepomukcontroller plasmoid
- disable compositing
- delete .kde folder
- uninstall and reinstall all kde packages
without any benefit. On the same laptop I have dual boot with a 64 bit arch installation, which does not have the same problem, nor has it my 64 bit desktop pc.
Does anyone have similar issues? I don't understand what is it that makes the HDD spin so much, nor how to eventually track it down (are there som HDD usage profiling utilities?). Moreover, why top and CPU usage plasmoid report so different CPU usage stats?
I'm very confused, so any help will be greatly appreciated.Although I'm not having any of the issues as Snack, I have found KDE 4.7.0 to be a very horrible release. In fact, I'm sick and tired of the KDE release notes bragging about killing thousands of bugs each release, when in actuality the first few revisions of each stable release are horrible. When I first upgraded, I ran into at least four really nasty bugs. Although I've worked around some of them, it left a really sour taste in my mouth. Here is what I've experienced:
1.) With a new user or fresh install, there is no wallpaper by default, even if I install kde-wallpapers before I log in, it makes no difference.
2.) Sometimes kwin will crash during log out.
3.) Worse yet, if I exit a full screen game, it will more than likely crash Kwin. This is a problem on my laptop (which has intel video) and not my desktop (which has nvidia video). If I don't remember to disable desktop effects before opening a game, I may run into a problem.
4.) Although my performance is good, it's not great. I would think a laptop with a Core i5 processor and 8GB of RAM would run faster than it is.
I have tested XFCE for a bit, and I do like it alot. However, with XFCE I am unable to browse Samba shares, and that is a huge problem. In addition, I find KDE's applications to be much better than what ships with XFCE, but I question whether they're worth the performance hit. I really love Kate, Gwenview, Digikam, and Amarok. I know you can install those in XFCE, but they feel out of place and then my desktop pretty much becomes a mutt. Not only that, but KDE is full featured, whereas XFCE is not. It's like I have to choose between a stable desktop or a desktop with full of bugs.
I hope that KDE 4.7.1 fixes everything, but historically it's usually the 4.x.2 release that really does the trick. -
Hi!
I would like to know if there is any way of getting system CPU and memory usage using Java code.I want to get the system CPU and memory usage using the performance monitor dll, the perfctrs.dll, but access this data using Java language.Then you should create wrapper dll between your java code and perfctrs.dll and convert data from format of dll to format of your java code.
So, that is next question - how to create wrapper dll, how to deal with or how perfctrs.dll works? -
Very high memory usage since upgrading to 3.6.4
Since upgrading 3 days ago FF pretty much runs up to 500mb as a floor and can get up to 800mb of memory. I had this issue with 3.5 but it vanished with 3.6 and was living in bliss as it rarely broke 250 mb.
I haven't added any extensions nor made any other changes. Is anyone else experiencing this?

== Upgraded to 3.6.4Hello everyone.
If you are having problems with RAM/CPU usage, do this:
#run Firefox in [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode safe-mode] to disable all extensions, themes and plugins. If this fixes your issues, be them with RAM or CPU usage, then you know it's a problem with plugins, themes or extensions. Proceed to number 2. If safe-mode doesn't fix the issues, then read bellow, after this list;
#update all extensions, themes and [https://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/ plugins] in your Firefox. If this doesn't solve the issues, proceed to the following number;
#disable all extensions, themes and plugins in your Firefox (not running safe-mode). Being certain that, as in safe-mode, the problems you're having have gone away, enable one plugin at a time. You should be certain that you WANT that plugin to be enabled, so keep your overall number of plugins as low as possible. When you encounter the problems, you know you've found a problematic plugin, so disable it for good. Keep enabling all plugins (except problematic ones) until you've gone through them all.
#enable one extension at a time. Again, be certain that you WANT that extension to be enabled, so keep your overall number of extensions as low as possible. Also, try the theme you want to have installed so see if that is what's causing the problem. When you encounter the problems, you know you've found a problematic extension/theme, so disable it for good. Keep enabling all your extensions (except problematic ones) until you've gone through them all;
#you're done! You've fixed your problems with problematic add-ons. If you want to keep using those problematic add-ons, please contant their author for support.
Ok, if disabling all extensions and plugins through safe-mode didn't work to bring Firefox's CPU and RAM usage to good levels, then you have different issue. The most likely scenario is that you have a third party software running on your computer that is messing with Firefox. Do as follows:
#try reinstalling Firefox. No data will be lost. You can get the latest version for free at [http://www.getfirefox.com/ getfirefox.com]. If that doesn't fix the problem, proceed;
#do a virus/malware check on your computer. If this doesn't fix it, proceed;
#disable all software running in the background that you don't want to have running in the background (in windows, this is done by pressing WINDOWS+R in your keyboard, typing "msconfig" (without the commas) and pressing enter. Now, under the "Startup" tab, you can uncheck the software you don't want, and reboot your system for changes to take effect. If you're unsure of what software you want running, ask someone with more experience). If this doesn't fix your issues with Firefox, proceed;
#check your firewall/antivirus/security suite for enabled functions/features that you don't want and/or may be conflicting with Firefox. You'll find that these features are most likely tied to Internet Security features, such as link scanners or URL checkers and the like. If you're not sure they are conflicting with Firefox, simply try to disable them to see whether or not that's true. As long as you don't browse the web with your antivirus completely off and your firewall completely turned off, there should be no problems. If this doesn't solve the issues, proceed to the following number;
#check your operating system security options, mainly advanced options that are not configured by default. While it's very unlikely that this may be the cause of the problem (after all, it's the last item on the list), it's remotely possible. If this doesn't work, proceed to the following point;
#update your modem/router software. There have been some reports that some modem/router software may cause Firefox and other browsers to loose performance and/or stability. If updating doesn't fix your issue, try other versions of the software, if possible. If you need support with this, contact your modem/router manufacturer. If this doesn't help, proceed;
#clean up your OS registry, using appropriate software. Make sure you've followed my instructions correctly, but if this all doesn't work, [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Managing+profiles create a new Firefox profile] (this can be temporary, of course) and see if the issues persist. Report here the results, so we can help you further.
