CPU hog and high temps.

Ok so I have updated my 2008 MBP 2.5ghz dual core, 2GB ram, too Lion and iLife 11.  I have used iPhoto 09 before on Snow Leopard just fine, but after upgrading I am seeing iPhoto'11 hog 110%CPU and my temp rockets to 65-70+ degrees Celsius
Is this normal behavior? I have left it running incase it was indexing or something but the temps never drop below 62c.

When you checked Activity Monitor, did you change it from its default of "Show User Processes" to "Show All Processes?" You have to make this change to see the background processes that typically eat up cycles and raise the temps. There is a "Show" pull-down in the upper part of the AM window where you make the change.
Are you leaving some space behind the computer? The all-important exhaust port is part of the display hinge assembly and that area needs to be clear.

  • Kernel task over 100%. High CPU Load. High Temp. Problem Solved.

    Hi,
I thought i would make a post as i had been having trouble with my 13 inch mid 2009 MBP for sometime (6 months), with runaway kernel tasks causing high CPU loads. I had searched through forums and discussions for a long time trying to find the problem and isolate it. Initially i discovered some problems with finder preferances that were chewing up CPU which i solved by deleting the prefereance file, allowing the system to recreate a non corrupted version. This helped but still i had problems. I tried maintainance suites like onyx, reseting PRAM, booting into safe mode, hardware checks and diagnostics, and more little tricks than i can remember. Nothing i tried really seemed to make a differance. Through reading on this forum and others i found out the kernel tasks can be a direct result of hi CPU core temps as the system runs a lot of small kernel tasks to try and take some of the CPU load away from processor intensive processes that may be contributing to hi CPU load. The thing which solved my problem in the end was opening up my MBP, being careful not to touch the logic board and literally puting my vacuum cleaner over the fan, sucking dust and dirt and dust out of my latop. This computer has been through the dirt with me, literally its been dragged through rural south east asia for a year and accompianied me to warhouse parties to perform and run lighting and visuals. Its little wonder the fan was obviously clogged. I know people tend to be holier than though with their mac products and treat them with the upmost respect, but my love for the MBP has come from how sturdy and reliable it has been under less than desirable conditions.
Now im not telling people this is what they should do, i had just noticed alot of people with this problem in my attempts to solve mine, and in the end this is what helped. My MBP now runs at a temperature where i can touch the metal near the CPU without being worried about a 3rd degree burn and the CPU load is acceptable with no run away kernel tasks. Like i saw this might not be the cause of your porblem, as my laptop has lived a rough and fun life so far, but i thought i would share this with you all as i have had contstant help from this forum and others searches for solutions to problems with my apple products.

Already tried SMC and PRAM-reset with no luck.
On my MacBook late 2008 it's the same effect.

  • Kernel Panic, and high temps?

Hey, I've got a MBP I'm not sure if it's the late 08 model, it's what I think you call a aluminum MBP and has 4GB 667MHz RAM, 2.4GHz Processor, NVidia GeForce 9600 GT 256MB.
EDIT: Hah, just noticed, I should mention we're running Leopard. Not Snow Leopard.
It's had a kernel panic about 6 - 8 times in the past week and a half, it hadn't been used much for about 1 - 2 weeks, and we had left it on one day, and it was actually on it's screensaver and I went to it and it had had a kernel panic.
I'm not sure why, it's had no modifications whatsoever. The only thing that I thought had changed, was we updated to 10.5.8, I think that may have been when it started, I may be wrong though.
Is there anyway to solve this issue? the first time I noticed it, like I said it was on a screensaver,
it happened a few more times before I actually started to look closer at the issue, and
the last time it happened was about 1 or 2 days ago. It happened about 3x in a row, when we were hooking it up to a 42" 1080P HDTV (I think), trying to watch some videos on the laptop, after the first kernel panic being hooked up to the TV, we unplugged it, and then was using it for 2-3 minutes, actually changing some settings in System Preferences, it then did it again, and I then unplugged the A/C Power cord, because I thought it was getting VERY hot, and it happened again. It seems to be really cool in the morning having been turned off, or been asleep, average temp of everything is between 25-35. 5 or more minutes of activity, the GPU is up around 50-55, etc...
I don't know how to attach an image or the zip archive of the MBPs kernel panic logs,
But the temps for iStat Nano were:
    Macintosh HD: 43c
    CPU A: 51c
    GPU Diode: 57c
    GPU Heatsink: 48c
    Heatsink A: 46c
    Heatsink B: 38c
    Enclosure Bottom: 31c
Are these temperatures too hot? I have seen most of these temperatures a little higher than this though.
    Can anyone help?

Don't know if this will help or not-
I'm very new to all this technology and so purchased an Apple Care plan to help me. I've had my machine for about 8 months. In the last three weeks I've had several incidents of Kernal panic. After scanning the system with the Tech Tool that comes with the Apple Care plan I found that there was a problem with my Video Ram. In working with Austin, the very helpful staff person at Apple I learned to reset the System Management Control (SMC) by turning off the machine, removing the charge/power cord, removing the battery from the back, then holding down the power button for 10 seconds. After that I replaced the battery, replaced the power cord and then turned the machine back on. I rescanned the system with the Tech Tool and everything checked out fine.
I believe the cause was me overheating the machine. Austin explained that I had been blocking the cooling system by treating my machine as a laptop instead of the portable system that it is.
Austin sugggested that I use the MacBook on a flat surface even if I was sitting on the couch or in bed to allow it to cool as it was designed. That's what I've been doing and so far so good.

  • MSI Lightning 290X Corrupted GB Mobo BIOS Logo screen and high temps

Hello, I am experiencing a corrupted (or perhaps just blown up) Gigabyte logo screen on boot with my Lightning 290X as can be seen here:
My Lightning 7970 does not do this and this is the second Lighting 290X that has this problem.
Also, I am experiencing temps as high as 79 degrees when playing demanding games like BF4 or Ghosts.
Any assistance is greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

They are not alarming, but they are about 8 degrees higher than what I expected given what I have read from other owners around the web.
8°C is nothing to talk about. You can't compare user reports from different individual samples and different conditions.

It only happens on post then it appears to behave normally.  I am on a GA-Z68XP-UD5 BIOS F3 (most recent is F6).  I will try updating to the most recent version and see if it makes a difference.  I am connected via DVI.
It is a connection issue on initialization then. If bios update doesn't help, try HDMI or DP (via adapter if not offered by monitor).

Also, I am experiencing GPU usage spikes (literal spikes going all the way to 0 at times and up to 100 in AB) in all games and my core clocks are wavering a bit.  I play with VSYNC on at 60 Hz.  The framerate is generally smooth except for a few maps in BF4 (Shanghai, especially once the building comes down) and in Ghosts (under the bridge in Containment).  I play at 1920 x 1200.  Is this normal behavior for this card?  I have heard quite a few complaints about voltages and core clocks fluctuating.  Is this inherit in the card or will this be fixed?
Like all modern gpus this gpu features a boost behavior which allows it to control voltage and clockrates according to current load and temp situations. Modern cards don't have a fixed clockrate/voltage.
The situations reported for BF4 are cpu limited mostly.

  • High Temps low CPU usage.

I bought a  HP ENVY TouchSmart 15-j063cl Notebook PC (ENERGY STAR) last November and have been experiencing high temps and loud fans at very little CPU usage or strain. When I am streaming video often times I will hear the fan speed up every once and awhile and the TZ00 will be at about 60 degrees Celsius. I recently tested the system by playing Arma 3 on minimum graphics with shadows disabled and within  a minute of playtime the fan was blaring and the TZ00 was at just under 80 degrees Celsius. I did this test with the laptop elevated on a metal stand leaving the main exhaust completely clear and the majority of the bottom also clear. During the test the CPU usage was at about 20% maxing at 30% and I was getting about 35 FPS.
(While I was typing this TZ00 was above 50 degrees celsuis)-10minutes after closing arma
    What's the problem guys?

I might sound weird but sometimes CPU runs hot in a loop. If you check in Task manager, it peaks at 3.2 GHz and won't come down. This situation is because of bios problems and HP won't confirm this problems as it is their way. I solved by reducing the processor maximum power to 80% in power options. From then, CPU wont peak itself as there is a limit and won't stay in the loop. Hot air coming from left vent is solved.
But if the chasi is becoming hot while air from vents is less hot than metal chasi, then I think its CPU fan problem. I prefer you to clean the vents by disassembling the laptop though nearest HP service or local service guy. Just clean the CPU fan and coolant pipes running around the CPU and GPU. Im not an HP expert but I found these are the issues for over-heating. Remember 60 degree is considered normal temp for i7-4700 processor. But, if you feel its hotter then check it once. Don't hesitate.

  • MSI GT683 DXR CPU high temps

    Hello,
I have this wounderful gaming laptop for 2 months but I have some problem with CPU. Few days ago I was plaing BFH and suddenly my computer started to low GPU usage and shuted off like u will hold shut down button. When I started again I hadn't screen about wrong shuting down(safe mode etc.). Now when I play BFH my CPU temp, like ThrottleStop, OCCT, CPUID Hardware Monitor shows, comes up to 97 degree, 80-85 awerage. When it comes to 90 Cooler starts to work on his highs to lower temp to 80-85 than again works normally. When I start on Cooler Boost technology CPU temp is about 70. My question: are these temp good or to high. I think this is gaming laptop and it shouldn't have any problems with BFH. Should I turn on all the time Cooler Boost ?
Of course when it comes to high temp I notice performance decrease. Normally I have 100 FPS but it lowers to 70 or even to 35.
    Sorry for my English
    Cheers Barbatian

No overclock! Don't be too surprised by the fact that 1333 is less than 1600. So what you should do is set the memory speed down. Down to something your AMD processor likes. Strictly speaking, running at 1600 should only be done after a heavy processor overclock.
Talk to "viper" about it: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=152798.0
So, please set memory to run at 1333 to gain stability and fix your temp. issue.

  • G505s are high apu and gpu temps normal during gaming?

Hi, I'm new to Lenovo laptops and new to Amd processors so need a bit of help/advice regarding my G505s with 2.5ghz A10 Apu and 5750 Gpu.
I have had this laptop about a month now and overall I'm impressed with it including its ability to play a lot of demanding games such as Battlefield 3 and even Dayz! Although the laptop runs these games on decent settings and maintaining good frame rates, it has one down side, it gets hot!
After about 20-25 minutes playing battlefield 3 on high settings the laptop gets to hot and restarts without any notice. If I turn the game settings down to medium then it is possible to play a bit longer before the laptop restarts itself. The only way I've managed to play without the laptop restarting is by going into processor power options and changing it from 100% to 99% maximum processor state. This means the Apu clock speed is reduced and it doesn't go into turbo mode. However by doing this I am losing processing power (max clock speed reduces to around 2100mhz) and the laptop still gets very hot.
Using various temp programmes I am getting Apu temps of around 90-94 degrees Celsius and the 2 gpu's are around 85-90 degrees Celsius. To me the fan doesn't seem powerful at all on my laptop and even when the laptop is really hot you can hardly feel any hot air being blown out of the vent. The keyboard on the left hand side and the case above the vent gets very hot to touch and makes using the laptop uncomfortable.
Basically I just want to know does any one else that owns this laptop experience these high temps during gaming? I also get similar temps when just streaming films over netflix although not quite as high.
I know this isn't a dedicated gaming rig so heat isn't going to be ventilated as well as it could be but these temps seem worryingly high to me and I don't want long term damage by using it running too hot.
    Hope someone can help me
    Cheers in advance

  • Huge CPU temp fluctuation - high temp

I have K8N neo platinum (socket 754)  with latest bios with cool n' quiet on. I am currently using the stock Heatsink and fan. My temp reading for CPU changes drastically from idle to full load. According to speed fan (and core center) the temp idles out at 38 C but at high load it goes all the up to 66 C. I was think the temp change so big, I usually hear that idle and load temp are bewteen 5 C of each other. I tried touching the Heatsink after running it and load and it felt hot, but it didn't burn my finger.  Not sure if heatsink isn't cooling right or is it a temp reading error. The current BIOS supposedly gives accurate temp reading, so just might be problem with the heatsink. Any idea whats going on?

I guess you haven't read any posts here at all. Yes virginia there is a problem. False readings using the Newcastle and Higher core after a cold boot. The false readings go away after a warm boot.
You are also wrong about the 5C difference from idle to full load conditions. While it varies it can be as much as 25c difference if you are using Cool and Quiet. 15c is more in line for those folks not using C&Q.

  • TS3999 I see high and low temps in place of scheduled events. Why do I see weather instead of events? Is there a way to switch ?

Anyone out there with a solution?  I don't know how it got there but I now see high and low temps in my Calender view 68/45 and I don't know how to get back to only events.
    Thanks

Check Settings>Privacy>Calendars.  You may have a weather app that is accessing your calendar and entering this information.  If so, turn it to Off and see if it stops.

  • Satellite A45 - CPU usage is high and applications slow

    Hi all,
I'm trying to debug a hardware problem on my Toshiba Satellite A45. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04, but I don't believe this is OS or software related.
THE PROBLEM: CPU usage is high and applications slow to a crawl after using a memory intensive application for a few minutes, i.e. viewing a video or playing a game. Basically, anything that might use the screen a lot. If instead I work only from a command prompt, even when the application might be doing a lot of work, I don't encounter this problem. After shutting down all application, CPU usage is still higher than normal (90% idle, should normally be about 99% idle).
Xorg typically now showing about 6% usage (normally < 2%). If I at any time after this try to work in any application, usage is still bogged down. Only a reset gets me back to normal.
Note: My system had always worked fine, and I had not done any software installation or changes when this started happening.
However, the laptop did go through an 800 mile round trip in the back of the car in a padded laptop bag.
DEBUG: This doesn't seem to be RAM as I have replaced RAM and reseated the RAM, and the problem still occurs. This doesn't seem to be the Hard Drive as I can try to run from a Live CD (no HDD usage) and everything still slows to a crawl.
HELP: I'm not sure how to debug from here.
I don't have extra bits of hardware to do swaps.
Any ideas how to further debug this?
    Thanks,
    Grommit

    Hi grommit
What do You think about the possibility that your PC is becoming overheated?
To me this sounds like such a scenario.
Your using an application which is intensive - which makes the unit warm up a lot probably.
After that everything is sluggish. This is what may happen when cooling is not sufficient - the CPU is throttled to reduce heat generation. And the effect is that the unit works pretty slow.
May I suggest that You try to let the unit be off for some time before trying it again - I don't know your possibilities, but I would put it on the balcony or on the floor below an open window too cool it really much.
Then try again from whatever media you like.
The result? Good performance for a while again? Then either clean the cooling module yourself or have a repair workshop do this for You.
Good luck and stay with Linux! :)
    BR Tom

  • High temp on cpu 2

    i get 48 c on cpu 2 and 35 on cpu 1 on my k7d. What's going on  8o ??iis it a bug ? is bios update useful (i have the 1.3) ?
    thx

First of all, its usually best to give some information first. What processor types are you using, where you are getting the temp readings, etc.
As a general heading, I would check to see what temp the BIOS is reading to confirm (if thats not where you are getting them). If you are using AthlonXP's then those temps are both survivable. Try putting them under load and see what you get.
Also, if you have the desire and ability, check out your heatsinks to be sure they are properly mounted. Now that I think of it, your readings may not be the same in theory. On a multiprocessor system the work is not divided evenly, but allocated as necessary. You may very well have different readings on each processor according to how much work each one is doing. Yeah, a 13 degree celsius difference sounds a bit far, but its possible. How is your airflow in your case? Is one CPU in a more isolated area?
    Just things to think about.

My iPad (new 16gb) is often high temp and makes many times restarts. Is this problem? What should I do?

Take it back. Dont try to trouble shoot. I just upgraded to the new ipad last week. Mine doesnt do that. It doesnt even get that "hot" like people say. A little warmer, yes. It should no way keep restarting due to temperature. If someone here says its normal, they are full of crap. Dont screw around with it, just take it back asap and explain it to apple. You will get another one.

I investigated a bit more and recovered, that it has something to do with the printer drivers. When I remove all printers from setting, everything is fine. As soon as I add a printer (Brother MFC 9440CN printer/scanner, printer driver provided by Mountan Lion), the crash reporter starts it's work and the error log is full of those entries.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance,
    Marcus

I did more exploration and found the cause of this, but I don't know how to fix it:
I removed all Brother and Lexmark printer drivers and rebooted (and also tested with a virtual machine using 10.8.0 as guest os that never had any printer installed). As soon as I enter the printer settings and press the "+", the crashes begin, so it looked like the bonjour one of the printers announcing themselves via Bonjour were causing this.
When watching a picture in the preview app the same happend. We have two multi function printers in our network, the already mentioned brother printer and a Lexmark X204N. Switching off the Lexmark (which wasn't installed on my Mac) solved the problem. Switching off the printer is no solution in our office (it's our fax device and main printer), but switching off mDNS on the Lexmark also solved it. But this can only be a workaround.
Is this a known problem with Lexmark devices and Mountain Lion (it works fine with machines using Lion)? Are there any fixes known? It's just the Lexmark device announing itself via Bonjour that causes trouble, even if the driver is not installed.

  • Permanent high CPU load and timeouts in communication channels

    Dear Colleagues,
we've a strange issue since last week. At first we had an problem with a redirect to the cytrix online booking engine within the travel management application of our SAP NW Portal. There is a redirect.jsp file deployed in our PI system that connects to cytrix and passes the URL with session link and session cookie to our Portal. We fixed that issue by restarting the PI system.
    We have a PI 7.0 stack 23 on HP-UX.
After restarting we found that we've got a very high CPU load (about 75% overall CPU, or 300% at 4 CPUs) probably caused by very frequent (3 per second) minor garbage collection runs (as seen in GC.log).
On friday we had timeouts within one of our communication channels in the PI system.
We changed the heap size from 2GB to 3GB and the new generation from 341MB to 768MB and restarted the PI system. But after a few ours the system uses 75% RAM of the CPU high CPU load and the GC runs are still the same.

Does anyone know what can cause the high load?
Is the frequency of the GC runs normal?
Can the timeouts be connected to the high CPU load?
The error ony occurs on our productive system.
I'd appriciate your help very much.
    Kind regards,
    Paul

    hi Paul,
I believe an issue like that needs to be done onsite and not via a forum
as it probably requires doing lots of checks/tests
my suggestion would be to get a PI consultant expert with basis experience onsite or do it via OSS with SAP
