CPU license definition
Hi there,
Is it possible to do CMS clustering with CPU license*1 ?
If not, is it possible to add report servers to multiple machine with CPU license*1?
Thanks,
Chris
I don't think clustering and adding report servers are a function of the CPU license, if using crystal reports server of business objects edge then you cannot cluster. If using Business Objects Enterprise then it should be supported if the CMS's are on machines with only 1 CPU (or more based on the license) for more details on the ins and outs you will need to talk to your account rep about the CPU license.

Oracle 10g CPU Licensing / Usage
I have purchased a quad cpu license for 10g. The new server just purchased has has 8 CPU's. Can oracle be installed on this machine without having to increase the CPU license count? Can 10g be tuned to just use 4 of the 8 CPU's to meet the licensing requirement?
The new server just purchased has has 8 CPU'what sort of server is it? Are those CPUs single, dual or multi-core? There are different licensing multipliers for certain types of CPU. Find out more.
Can 10g be tuned to just use 4 of the 8 CPU's to meet the licensing requirement? No. This is an artifact of different chip architectures. It is possible to do this with Intel chips (I recently blogged about this whilst pondering why Oracle Express is available for Linux but not Mac or other Unixes) but Sun Sparc chips are harder.
What you might be able to do (depending on your server) is hard-partione your server and install Oracle in a 4-processor partition. Supposedly Oracle will except Sun Solaris 10 Containers as a licensable partition but I would check with your account manager.

WEBI CPU License Required for BOE Premium Install
We are being told that our BOE Premium Install requires a WEB Intelligence CPU license for View on Demand documents in addition to our BOE Premium CPU license. This is news to us. We have been told for 5 years that our BOE Premium CPU license was inclusive of WEB Intelligence Document View on Demand consumption. Has anyone else ran into this issue? Is this a recent change in licensing by SAP?
Yes, the premium license covers Crystal - you don't have to do anything special to "turn it on".
In order to create Crystal Reports for use in BOE, you must purchase a Crystal Reports license for each person who will be designing reports. There is no web interface for designing reports in Crystal, it is a desktop application.
Reports written in Crystal can be published to BOE (Crystal XI will publish to r2 and 3.x, Crystal 2008 will only publish to 3.x from within the software, but there are ways around that) or run from either a desktop or web application - the application has to have a Crystal Viewer component. There are several viewer apps available for viewing reports outside of BOE, or you can write your own (a version Crystal comes with Visual Studio.)

Hi, I downloaded adobe LiveCycle ES2 trail version. I need single cpu license. How could i get that one??
Acrobat XI is not distributed with Designer. Designer is now a separate product. You can create forms in Acrobat as an AcroForm or using Forms Central (an online forms program). You can print the form to a new PDF and then recreate the fields in Acrobat using the recognize form fields. You will likely have to fix the form fields, but that would be the process. Generally, once a form is taken to Designer, you can't bring it back without such steps.
Designer is available with AA8 - AAX, but since is a separate product as I indicated. -
1 cpu License on 2 cpus server
Hi there,
I was wondering if i can deploy the weblogic 8.1SP2
with 1 cpu license in our dual cpus machine?
Is it possible?
Many thanks.Yes, you can install the software on 2 computer but can't use them at the same time.
Installation prodecure remains the same , no change. -
Reduce CPU license from 2 to 1
Hi,
In our environment we have 3 CPU licensing on our production(10.7 NCA) and 2 CPU licensing on our test server.
A s/w license reviewing vendor told that we can physically remove one CPU from our test system and use it on our production server.
We have our applications (10.7 NCA) running on that test server(web, forms, reports,db 8.1.7.3).
I may have to change my init.ora parameters PROCESSES,SESSIONS,ENQUEUE_RESOURCES if we have to use 1 CPU.
But I was not sure if this will affect any other areas, any patches on our OS(HP_UX PA-RISC,9000 series).
Can anyone please give their thoughts on this.
ThanksWith respect to licensing you should never trust the advice of a non-Oracle source.
As far as I know you pay for the number of sockets, not for the number of actual CPUs.
Secondly SESSIONS and ENQUEUE_RESOURCES are derived parameters. There is no need to change them.
Why are you still using 8.1.7.3?
It has been de-supported ages ago!

Oracle VM guests and CPU Licensing ?
Hello All,
1. If i have a server with dual core (means 2 cpu's in a single chip isn't it?), when it comes to Oracle DB licensing based on CPU.
Do i need to count them as CPU= 2 or CPU=1 ?
2. Will i get better performance if i set Virtual CPU=4 for guest OS despite having only a single physical CPU in the machine ?
TIA,
J JNope. :) Your 16 core license covers all 16 cores in the physical server, so you can run as many Oracle DB instances as you like. You can even over-commit VCPUs, i.e. give each guest 4 VCPUs for a total of 32 VCPUs on a 16-core machine. This still doesn't require any more licenses.
This is only recommended if your databases would only really use 20-40% of physical CPU cycles. If your instances are going to be quite busy, I wouldn't recommend over-committing. -
License definitions ...
Guys,
I have spent nearly two hours trying to find out what the difference is between, Student, Education and Commercial.
A reseller in NZ is saying that I can use an Education license for commercial purposes without academic proof. This doesn't sound right to me, there has to be a restriction.
You would think that this information would be blindingly obvious but I can not find it anywhere here.
Some posts say that it doesn't come with Font Software ... some posts say that it means there is no upgrade path. I could live without either of them if I can have it for commercial use.
Does anyone know for sure? Can anyone link to an Adobe article that details there.
Cheers DaveI only know the rules in North America but they are as follows:
Student: Heavily discounted and usually sold directly through the
school. Once the software is received you must contact Adobe for a
serial number. Must be eligible to purchase. NO COMMERCIAL USE ALLOWED.
Academic: Steep discount but not as much as the student version. Must be
an eligible student or teacher to purchase. COMMERCIAL USE ALLOWED. Full
upgrade rights to commercial versions if academic eligibility ends.

BOE license model (NUL v/s CPU)
All,
I would like to know if anyone here has a good handle on how BOE licensing works. We are in touch with the BO Account Rep, but also wanted to check here if anyone knew.
We are in the process of converting our existing NUL to CPU-based. Anyone who is a customer with CPU-based license model or SAP folks, can you please confirm if the following points that I understand are true --
a) Web Servers are not counted towards BOE licenses.
b) The calculation of CPUs for multi (dual/quad) core machines is done as: 1 CPU license counted for 1st
CPU, 0.5 CPU license counted for every subsequent CPU on a server.
Thanks!question A: is true, it does not count
question B: not sure

Small Business Server 2003 Compatibility with Oracle 10G, licensing?
Hello all,
Is Windows SBS 2003 compatible with Oracle 10G, I looked at the compatibility and didn't notice it but I wanted to see if anyone here had any experience with the two.The licensing isn't by cpu slots, it's by the number
of cores times a multipier, which I believe for intel
is .5, so if you have a cpu w/ 2 cores, you would
purchase a 1 cpu license. If you have a quad core
cpu, you would need to purchase a 2 cpu license. I
would definitely talk to your sales rep about this to
make sure the multipier is right (and if it has
changed w/ intel quad technology). Thanks Jim. The multiplier used above for Intel is indeed correct. However, Oracle has (in the last few weeks) introduced the term 'socket' into it's licensing metrics as follows:
"When licensing Oracle programs with Standard Edition One or Standard Edition in the product name, a processor is counted equivalent to an occupied socket. See http://www.oracle.com/corporate/pricing/technology-price-list.pdf "
To quote another source (CRN):
"..Standard Edition was licensed for servers with up to four single-core processor cores. For multicore chips, users could only license it for up to eight cores total. Oracle's formula was to multiply the number of cores by 0.50 to get the CPU license number to determine price. So a four-core box counted as two CPUs.
Now Standard Edition can be licensed on servers with up to four sockets, or four processors running one-, two- or four-core chips (and possibly a higher number of cores)." This source overlooks to mention that the multiplier relates to Intel!

Please clarify the following license issue
Hello
Please clarify the following license issue
Oracle 10g se license requirement while using a power 6 P520 machine with 2-core 4.2 GHz processor card,4 memory DIMM slots. Are we entitled for paying for one oracle 10g SE license?
many thanks in advanceWhen you read through that thread, did you see where I linked to and quoted the licensing definitions
Processor: shall be defined as all processors where the Oracle programs are installed and/or running. Programs licensed on a processor basis may be accessed by your internal users (including agents and contractors) and by your third party users. For the purpose of counting the number of processors which require licensing for a Sun UltraSPARC T1 processor with 4, 6 or 8 cores at 1.0 gigahertz or 8 cores at 1.2 gigahertz for only those servers specified on the Sun Server Table which can be accessed at http://oracle.com/contracts , “n” cores shall be determined by multiplying the total number of cores by a factor of .25. For the purposes of counting the number of processors which require licensing for AMD and Intel multicore chips, “n” cores shall be determined by multiplying the total number of cores by a factor of .50. For the purposes of counting the number of processors which require licensing for all hardware platforms not otherwise specified in this section, a multicore chip with "n" cores shall be determined by multiplying "n" cores by a factor of .75. All cores on all multicore chips for each licensed program for each factor listed below are to be aggregated before multiplying by the appropriate factor and all fractions of a number are to be rounded up to the next whole number. When licensing Oracle programs with Standard Edition One or Standard Edition in the product name, a processor is counted equivalent to a socket.
It appears that you fall under the "not otherwise specified" category because you're not dealing with an UltraSPARC T1 (multiplier 0.25) or an AMD/ Intel chip (multiplier 0.5) so your multiplier would be 0.75.
0.75 * 2 cores = 1.5 processors which would have to be rounded up to 2 processors. If you had 4 total cores, you would only need a 3 processor license.

JRun4 2 CPU version versus CF8 JRun: difference?
We have run the full JRun4 2 CPU license product since 2003
and have been very satisfied with its clustering ability for
ColdFusion, starting with version 6 J2EE in a WAR deployment. Now
with ColdFusion 8 and the full integration of JRun4 with CF8, I
need to know if the bundled version of JRun4 supports 2 CPUs? I
have had to run the JRun4 Updater 7 on all of our DEV, TEST and
PROD servers/clusters as well as update the wsconfig.jar and
connections for all of our Internet and Intranet web sites. I am
preparing to build and cluster our new TEST servers and want to be
sure that if I use the bundled JRun4 server that it does indeed
support two CPUs.
Thanks,

It supports as many CPUs as you have. The JRun that comes
with CF
Enterprise is licensed for 2 CPUs though.

Oracle 10g license Related Query
My Organisation have Oracle 10g R2 SE with One CPU License, Can it be installed on One CPU Quad Core Server without violating the license ?
Please Help !Licenses are per physical CPU not logical as far as I know and my organization is using that method only. Still better to consult oracle Sales guy on this. Can you post the OS platform because it has some different calculation for each OS based on core factor? For Standard Edition it is still per Physical CPU but for Enterprise Edition Core factor comes into play. Please check http://www.orafaq.com/wiki/Oracle_Licensing in Processor Licensing section. For core factor you can check http://www.oracle.com/us/corporate/contracts/processor-core-factor-table-070634.pdf document. So if you are running EE with Quad Core CPU on Windows Machine then it comes under All Other Multicore chips of the document and number of CPU license would be 1(physical CPU)+4*1(No of core - Quad * core factor=5.

CA Forum: Authentication
I don't know if we don't have enough licenses or if there is something misconfigured. Or if there is a problem with usage.
When I go to the CMS properties, I think I see who is logged in at the moment. Just what is the Session Count? The number of sessions the user has open (InfoView, Instance Manager, CMC, etc.) or the number of licenses used?
Is there a whitepaper that describe the license model?
And finally is there a setting for timeouts? I think what happens is that users just close the browser window instead of actually using the padlock icon to log out. Would this result in a 'stranded' login that consumes a license?
Thanks for any insight or hints!

Hi Norman,
I think both these questions would be better served in the deployment forum going forward...
As for licenses it depends on your license type, CPU license wouldn't matter, concurrent would only be the user count not session, named would be the session count=licenses used.
There are timeouts for when a session is inactive but they vary per app server. You should be able to find them in KB's or open a case with support if that doesn't work so they can give you the right info based on your environment.
In IE 6 the default setting prompted for logoff even when closing the browser. IE7 I don't believe honors this setting. If this is an earlier version than XIR2 there were other issues that caused extra sessions.

Oracle licensing for partition query
Hi experts
For example if server server1 has 2 instances and let say both are using Partitioning option it will show that we have to be licensed for partitioning twice (for each instance).
If the both running on the same server and make an argument that they are on the same oracle home how would the license cost work out
is it per oracle home/database

theres a leading question here in that partitioning is an add-on option to an enterprise edition license. So the question isnt if you need to buy the partitioning option twice but what are you adding it on to? have you 2 EE licenses already? If you have 1 CPU, 1 EE CPU license, you need to buy 1 partitioning add-on.
