Crash Reporter disabled by default?

For some weird reason, my crash reporter seems to be disabled globally in the OS. Is there at unix command I can use in the Terminal to verify Crash Reporter status/enable it?

Crashes in Mac OS X Server are logged, though dialogs are not shown to the user by default. (This default behavior is likely the source of confusion here.)
+defaults read com.apple.CrashReporter+
+defaults write com.apple.CrashReporter DialogType {none|basic|developer|server}+
Based on the above shell command, you should be able to easily find added details from various sources using your preferred search tool.
I've found an old Q&A ([QA1288|http://developer.apple.com/qa/qa2001/qa1288.html]) that has some details, but what I read there looks to be somewhat stale information.

  • Why does the checkmark for "Submit crash reports" in System Defaults always reappear after I remove it?

I keep trying to remove this check, but it always come back on its own.

Thank you for the reply, but none of those suggestions apply/or work. This is only a single preference that's not being saved. There is not a user.js file, but a prefs.js file and there is not an entry for crash reports on/off in it. These seems like a bug in Firefox, as the checkbox for the "Submit crash report" toggles back on the instant the dialog is closed, then reopened. In other words, just this one option is not saved. Any other options are saved when changed.

The crash report does two things.
    1) tells you Firefox crashed
    2) files a crash report with the '''Mozilla.org''' system so that
someone can look over the report to find a reason and cure.

  • Bad HELP: "submit crash report" no longer an option (3.6.6 linux)

the edit/preferences/generl panel does not contain an option: submit crash reports. HELP screens say it is present "above 3.4.4". False.

You have the Ubuntu build of Firefox which has crash reporting disabled. The official Mozilla build from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/ does have crash reporting (however it doesn't integrate with your operating system as well).

  • How to Disable Crash Report

I have a program (executable) created under LabVIEW 2011 SP1.
Every time the program is stopped and closed, a LabVIEW Crash-report is created.
Nothing is wrong in the program, and when restarted everything works fine.
The Crash-report doesn't tell much, NI say it could indicate that something is wrong on the computer with some other software, for example the anti-virus program.
All this crash-report does is frustrating the customer using the software.
I have asked NI how to turn off the Crash-report functionality, but has not received any answer after a week.
Does anybody know how to do this ?
(Running the source code does not generate any errors or crash reports.)

    Martin,
errors like this can have different sources. One source might be an invalid entry for the <exe>.ini file.
So please remove this file (backup) and start the exe. It will recreate a default ini file.
If the error dialog still occurs, you might want to try the following keys in the ini-file:
    NIERShowNonFatalDialogOnExit=False
    NIERNonFatalAutoSend=false
Please note that it is recommended to dig in for the real source of the error dialog and address it. The above is only a workaround which should remove the dialog.
    hope this helps,
    Norbert
I agree.  It's like treating a broken leg with painkillers - with the exception that a borken leg will porbably heal eventually.  Obviously there IS something wrong, or an error report wouldn't be generated.  It just doesn't appear to be critical - yet.

  • Unable to Disable 'Submit Crash Reports'

Under Option > Advanced I am unable to uncheck "Submit Crash Reports". Every time I uncheck it rechecks itself.
I tried launch Firefox as a administrator and unchecking it, but it doesn't stick.
Does anyone know if there's a .ini file or registry entry that I can change manually?

Good point on incremental updates I added a Environmental User Variable instead, as per info listed here:
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Breakpad
    and here:
    https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Environment_variables_affecting_crash_reporting
But does that disable the plugin crash reporter too? Or only the crash reporter for when the entire app crashes?
Because what I'm reading the one in Options>Advanced is for plugin crashes.

  • Mozilla Crash Reporter keeps popping up forever even after disabling "BreakPad" via application.ini

I've edited the registry using regedit, changed the DWORD entries of CrashReporter/SubmitCrashReport to 0. Edited application.ini file "enable=0" etc, etc. Reinstalled numerous times. Ran CCleaner numerous times. Tried a system restore. Nothing seems to kill off this highly frustrating Crash Reporter pop-up window. All I get is occasionally it gives me an option to use safe mode. Generally I get no-where. Turns what was once my favourite and best browser into the absolute worst. Hope there's a Mozilla tech out there who knows the software in and out who can advise on programming out this terribly broken feature.

We're sorry to hear that your Firefox seems to be crashing when you open it. Please perform the following steps to give us a crash report ID that helps us find out more about the cause of the crash.
#Press the following shortcut to get a Run window: [Windows] + [R]. This should bring up a window that contains a text field.
#In that text field, enter %APPDATA% and press Enter. An explorer window should open.
#From that explorer window, double-click on the ''Mozilla'' folder, then double-click on ''Firefox'' and then on ''Crash reports''. Double-click on ''submitted''.
#Now, you should see a list of files that contain reports. Go to ''View'' > ''Arrange Icons by'' > ''Modified'' to get the most recent files at the top of the window.
#Open the most recent 5 files with a text editor and copy the IDs.
#Paste each ID with '''bp-''' into the reply window on the forums.
    Thanks in advance!

  • All the lettlers on my desktop and in the address bar appear as symbols. Also, I can't run firefox because it keeps giving me a crash report. I'm running Vista, if that helps.

This is my parent's computer. Here are the facts: After using facebook the previous evening, the next time the computer was used all of the desktop displayed symbols instead of letters/words. Upon trying to open Firefox a window labeled Firefox crash report opened. No matter what options you choose (send report, don't send, etc) when you click on an option, another Firefox crash report window opens. So I can't open Firefox. Simple solution would be to uninstall Firefox and reinstall it; however, it is very hard to navigate the computer with no words and all symbols. I am able to open up Internet Explorer, but anything in the address bar or search bar also appears as symbols. If I were to type in a specific site in the address bar, the site will load properly in words but the address bar still shows symbols. After much playing around, I was able to update Avast antivirus and run a full scan and nothing was found. I updated Malware Bytes and ran in for an hour but it never fully finished running before I had to leave. Please help.
