Crashing whenever using mx.controls.Alert.show

Flex Project: Desktop (AIR)
Flex SDK: 4.1
Flash Builder 4
Problem: Whenever I use Alert.show even with the simplest strings passed it crashes showing the following error:
TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
at mx.controls::Alert$/show()[E:\dev\4.x\frameworks\projects\framework\src\mx\controls\Alert.as:566]
And it is pointing at Alert.as line:
var sm:ISystemManager = ISystemManager(FlexGlobals.topLevelApplication.systemManager);
How do I use this? What's wrong? Any fix?

It sounds like you're referencing a NULL object somewhere. Any chance you could provide us with some sample code? I just successfully tried the following out:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<s:WindowedApplication xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx"
applicationComplete="init()">

<!-- Place non-visual elements (e.g., services, value objects) here -->
</fx:Declarations>
<fx:Script>
<![CDATA[
import mx.controls.Alert;
public function init():void
Alert.show("This is a test", "My Alert");
]]>
</fx:Script>
</s:WindowedApplication>

• Visual Studio 2013 slows down + crashes when using Source Control features.

I have spent two full days trying to resolve this issue but no luck so here we go,
I have created a project using Visual Studio Team Foundation Server plug-in in the past. Later on I switched to
Microsoft Git Provider.
Now when I connect to that project in the Team Explorer and double click on the solution to work on it locally it somehow changes the plug in to Microsoft Git Provider automatically and of course I can't
Commit/Commit and Push since I receive following error in the Team Explorer,
An error occurred. Detailed message: Failed to open directory 'C:/Users/.../AppData/Local/Application Data/'
Manually changing the plug-in to the Visual Studio Team Foundation Server
results in a broken Team Explorer as below,
With Settings leading to an empty pane, and also a warning in the Team Explorer's Changes page telling me the message below if I click on Pending Changes...
Microsoft Git Provider is not the current Source Control plug-in. Change Plug-in
And manually selecting the solution from Solution Explorer, right click and
Add Solution to Source Control, leads to never ending hour glass and (Not responding) visual studio.
New Projects
Creating a new project is straight forward, unless I "Add to Source Control" is checked. If so, again never ending process if Microsoft TFS plug-in is selected in the tools and eventually me Ending the Visual Studio task. And a VERY long process
(40+ mins) if I have chosen Microsoft Git but that finishes successfully rather.
New TFS project from Team Explorer
If I create a new project in my Online Web Studio
Click on Open with Visual Studio Link => Opens and connects to a my newly created TFS in team explorer.
Clicking new in Team Explorer under Solutions to create a new solution and bind it to this Repo
leads to straight crash of Visual Studio and restarting attempt of VS.
So I really can't use Source Control from visual studio other than cloning GitHub's existing repo's on Visual Studio and Committing my current Microsoft Git managed projects.
I have attempted
Repairing Visual Studio (no luck in results)
Devenv.exe /setup (no luck)
Trying to scrap the SCC info on my solution then at least it won't get picked up by source control then I can Check it in as a new project. (no luck and the solution picks the Microsoft Git upon opening it by clicking on the .sln file.) I have followed
these steps in this stack overflow answer.
And lots of mucking around like removing my workspaces almost Thousand times and putting them back, binding and etc.
I am really stuck on this and it's holding me back from staring a new project (which is problematic using Adding to Source Control) and unfortunately is dependent on the old project (which is developed under Visual Studio Team Foundation Server Plug-in which
is throwing tantrums)
Would like to hear you pro-s input on this
Using
Visual Studio 2013 Community edition (recently switched from Pro to Express to Community)
Windows 7 (64-bit)
Git tools
Git windows installation
Nuget Package manager
Visual Studio Log File

Mehradzie

Hi Mehradzie,
Based on the description, seems you're working with Git team project in Visual Studio Online(formerly Team Foundation Service). I'd like to know whether you mean Visual Studio Git command tool as the plug-in, and if you're trying to create solutions/projects
with Visual Studio and add them to the created Git team project.
From the screenshot, you're not connect to the Git team project by using Team Explorer. To work with Git team project locally, you can follow the instructions as below:
Connect to Git team project by using Team Explorer, after that you might install Git tools if you connect to the team project for the first time
Clone the remote Git repository to a local git repository and set the path to local git repository
Create a solution and select Git source control, also saved to the local path of the local git repository
Select your branch, and then click "Changes" and Commit the changes
Click "unsynced commits" and push the commit to remote git repository
You can also refer to the links below for more information about getting started with Git in Visual Studio Online.

• Aperture crashes whenever using the menu 'File' or 'Help'

Hi,
since some time Aperture (2.1.4) crashes whenever I click the menu "Ablage" ("File") or "Hilfe" ("Help") from the menu bar. The same holds true using a new preference file or using a completely new and empty library, or using my version (2.1.3) recovered with Time Machine.
Closer inspection reveals that the crash (spinning ball and '..does not react') occurs whenever I click the menu "File" or the menu "Help". The other menues work correctly, and all images can be edited, exported or imported etc.
I tried to download a new test version of Aperture, but this recognizes immediately my access code, and everything starts again.
Can somebody advise me to overcome this problem?
Best regards and merry Christmas
JG

I had a similar problem. I solved it with these instructions on my blog.

Mid 2010 15 inch MacBook Pro. Played out perfectly for the first two years. As soon as the warranty expired, things went sideways. I've done a couple of modifications on it but I dont believe they have affected it to such extent. I believe it might be a defective graphic card but at this point, believing the crash was induced by the usage of Office I have done everything possible short to dismembering the Mac and changing the Graphic Card. I have read somewhere that mid 2010s had problems with graphic cards. If anyone has found a way around the changing of the card, I would be very grateful of their opinion and suggestions.

First, uninstall the software responsible for installing these extensions:
com.logmein.driver.LogMeInSoundDriver          1.0.0
com.squirrels.driver.AirParrotSpeakers          1.8
com.rim.driver.BlackBerryUSBDriverInt          0.0.68
If removing the software and extensions doesn't solve the problem, then you are probably correct about the GPU:
The problem is likely due to the discreet GPU failing. Download gfxCardStatus 2.3 and use it to disable the GPU. This is a temporary workaround until you get your motherboard replaced.

• Adobe Premiere Pro CC keeps crashing whenever using high res images...WHY!?!

Have tried all fixes I can see, updated Intel drivers, Updated Graphics card drivers, run in compatibility mode, run in administrator mode, logged in and out of Adobe account, turned on and off, cleared memory cache etc. problem still seems to be happening!

• How to autoclick/run a button after Alert.Show() Event?

Hey Guys
So I have a alert.show happening for something like
public function test(evt:ResultEvent):void
if (evt.result.success == "yes")
mx.controls.Alert.Show("Yay!!!")
if (evt.result.success == "no")
mx.controls.Alert.Show("Nay")
Now I have another button called
<mx:Button label="Reload" id="Reload" />
I want that if the sucess == yes scenario is run.. After the popup box comes and a person click OK.. the reload button is run..
Please tell me how to do so??
Regards

You need to set up an event listener on the closeEvent.
Here is a quick example (untested):
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" layout="absolute" creationComplete="init()">
<mx:Script>
<![CDATA[
import mx.events.CloseEvent;
import mx.controls.Alert;
private function init():void {
Alert.show("myText", "myTitle", Alert.OK | Alert.CANCEL, this, onClose);
private function onClose(event:CloseEvent):void {
if (event.detail == Alert.OK) {
trace("ok pressed");
} else {
trace("cancel pressed");
]]>
</mx:Script>
</mx:Application>

• Flashbuilder 4.5 Alert.show error

My shutdown method looks like
private function onShutDown(event:Event):void {
event.preventDefault();
Alert.show("Do you REALLY want to close this application?", "Wait! Don't go!", 3, null, onConfirmation);
And is valid but throws :

TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.

Am I missing something. I have this setup so that the Flex project runs from a default .as class rather then default mxml application class.
And it works fine. As long as I leave Alert.show alone...
My hair is gone, my tea is cold, heeeeeelp!
Thanks on beforehand

Yes suspected last night that must be it after starting at it in debugger.
I am devicing my own alert box as a result of that, finely designed!
Thanks

• Mx.controls.Alert;

Hi there,
I am trying to use mx.controls.Alert and am getting the
following error:
"Failed to create a new alert, probably because there is no
Alert in the Library"
But i clearly have the component in my library!!
I have it working in another file but when I copy the code
into that it doesnt work either... any ideas ?
Thanks in advance!
I am just using an example from the help file to get it
working.....

Yes probably I've missed someting.
Using mx.controls.Alert is one of the first lessons in all my
FLEX tutorials, and I don't know why it doesn't work easily.
Perhaps may I import this conponent myself in FLEX BUILDER 3
but any informations noware to do that. It seems that it must work
without special manipulation..
Thx

• Trying to use Alert.show in module- possible?

I have some user data that I have to validate before
submitting it to a db and so I was planning on popping up an
Alert.show to ask them if they are sure in the usual fashion.
Button click event points to function that should show the Alert.
debug shows that function gets entered, but Alert does not show. no
error, just no Alert. code and controls are in a module that's
loaded into main application based on user input. Is this the
problem? Should I be using a popup window instead of Alert? Thanks
in advance.
Andy C.(never #)

First, thanks for the reply:
I can't browse outside from my windows box( well I can but
they can see what I'm doing), so I can paraphrase.
<mx:Button label="Add Button" id="btnAddUser"
click="doAddUser(event)" />
<mx:Script>
<![CDATA[
import mx.everything and its brother;
private function doAddUser(event:Event):void
var alrtmsg:String="Are you sure you want to add this data
to the database?";
var alrtttl:String="Confirm User Add";
Alert.show(alrtmsg,alrtttl, Alert.YES | Alert.NO, this,
alertClickHandler);
private function alertClickHandler(event:CloseEvent):void
if(event.detail==Alert.YES)
rest of code does validation
]]>
</mx:Script>
This is pretty much straight out of the help screens. Now
this is in a module that's loaded into the main application.
Everything else works as I expect it to, but I can't get the Alert
to popup. And obviously, since I'm validating user input I have to
have a way to show them when they forgot to put something in.
Thanks

• Alert.show causing IE to crash

I have an alert that I want to show as a confirmation to exit
my application. The alert works fine in Firefox, however when I run
it in IE the application and IE crashes hard.
Below is the code I tried:
public function exitClick():void {
Alert.show("Are you sure you want to exit Application?",
"Exit Application", 3, null, exitPinpoint, iconExit);
The code below works fine, it just puts an ok rather than the
YES NO that I want.
public function exitClick():void {
Alert.show("Are you sure you want to exit Pinpoint?", "Exit
Pinpoint");
After messing with this for an hour or so, the crashing is
dependant on placing some button other than ok in the alert. I
tried many variations of instantiating an alert and all of them
failed miserably. I also wrote a smaller test application and added
an alert that worked just fine?
I copied the popup manager code into my project and it was
failing on the line in the middle...
This code is in the AddPopup method of the PopupManager
Class:
children = topMost ? sm.popUpChildren : sm;
children.addChild(DisplayObject(window));
window.visible = false;
Text
Any help / ideas on how to resolve this would be greatly
appreciated.

It is possible to turn off such things as automatic updates and scheduled tasks to avoid interference with your LV code. As a matter of course, each new PC I use in a project (typically a new Dell of some sort) ends up having all of the "Value Added" software removed, all automatic updates disabled, and many services switched to "manual" start or disabled.
Although msconfig.exe does not ship with XP, it is compatible and can be used to prevent programs from running on Windows start up. Tweak UI is also a useful tool in getting XP to perform faster and with more stability.
As a Linux enthusiast for the past eight or so years, I have to give it it's due. But I've found that developing in LabView on that platform is quite limited. Depending on the "flavor" you choose, Linux on a desktop isn't entirely bombproof either. To really get stability and speed from a Linux system, you either need exactly the right distribution or you need to customize and re-compile your own kernel. Keep in mind that if you do switch to Linux, only certain versions are supported by LabView.
Believe it or not, I've got Windows systems (mostly tweaked versions of 2000) that have not been rebooted in countless months.
Years ago when I was always tweaking my Windows machines for gaming, I found a utility called 98Lite that was very useful. I once had an old PII laptop just blazing. http://www.litepc.com/ is the name of the of the software company I believe. They now have versions for 2000 and XP, although admittedly I have yet to try them.
Good luck!

• Crashes whenever paint brush or pencil are used, also, many bugs occur while usinh other tools (trial version)

As I said in the title, the application crashes whenever I try to use the paintbrush or pencil. Also, when scrolling, the canvas duplicates as well as any shape tools holding extra places when they should have vanished. I am using the trial version and haven't seen anything like this in the forums. Any help would be awesome.
