Create an educational dashboard: Flash datagrid or bootstrap html5

Hi - This is a question of whether to stay in flash or move to bootstrap and a responsive solution with regards to building an educational dashboard to show students results etc... in a data table. Flash is a bad idea on mobile and tablets so we are going for html5 + CSS3. Just asking if that is a good idea. If this cannot be answered here then I shall try somehwere else. Asking here as the flash guys are probably looking at other solutions just because Adobe is spending all its funds on other html5 technology with Adobe Edge to do the same as flash.

Basically, is bootstrap html5 + CSS a viable robust solution to producing an educational dashboard.

Hi. We are just beginning work on a dashboard for educational purposes. We need to show data tables of sts progress, notes etc...

We have downloaded a template based on bootstrap. It is all pretty easy except for the data integration. Before we were using flash datagrids and were also looking at flex components which were very easy to use. The questions are:
1. Can we get the same "power" for our data tables/data grids with bootstrap "ready made" plugin ins.
2. To replicate the datadrid in flash what do we use in bootstrap - ajax datatable or a j query plug in.
3. How do we connect up the mysql + php + datagrid. Would it be very similar to an AS3 + php + mysql solution?
Basically, is bootstrap html5 + CSS a viable robust solution to producing an educational dashboard.
I use the term plugin because I don't think you call them components or widgets.
You must also know that this will be on an enterprise level and there should be around 10,000 active users - not at the same time obviously. We will be hiring a freelancer or part tim staff to implement and maintain but we do need to know which way to go first.
Pretty broad questions maybe, just trying to find my way and study up on what I am supposed to be studying up on. I am on Lynda.com which is OK but I need some guys creating these things to give me advice and point us in the right direction.

Hi - thank you Nancy - I should get really specific now.
I spent quite a few hours investigating and here's the run down.
1. php + mysqli: Pretty easy as it is the same workflow as I use in flash - I was just a bit thrown by the html part and still have a few questions.
I will post the link to the very clean and easy to follow mysql + php implementation on html tables just in case any newbies are following the post.

    mysqli - they seem to use the "improved" mysqli now and this code seems to be very professional with encryption etc...
My question is which is the best method for handling the recordset back from the database.
1. In flash we used to use XML serialized which is easy for flash objects to pick up and then display in the datagrid tables.
2. The example in the next link echos it out in the html table format which sounds very obvious but not sure if it is correct as I have never dome that before.

3. However I am more used to dealing with an object returned and then dealt with in flash BUT a simple html table couldn't deal with that so - I have just started reading re: ajax or javascript. Are they the best way to handle data returned from a database. As I say this dashboard wil have to be used my many thousands and we will be creating various tables with multiple parameters inputted via dropdown box lists.
My workflow in flash - would it be javascript that would replicate that functionality or do I just echo out in tr and td tags as in above - seems to basic.

I am trying to create a button in flash that will display 4 separate images at the same time when clicked. I can't get the images to stay on when I take the mouse of the button. I need the actions script code to make this happen.

I am trying to create a button in flash that will allow the user to click on the button and 4 separate images show up at the same time. I can get the images to appear when I click the button but they will not stay on the screen. I need to know what code I use to make the images stay once the button is clicked, then I need to know exactly where I place that code. It does not appear to be possible to add the action code to the buttons layer since each time I add a new layer I just get another "up" "over" "down" and "hit" line.

It is not clear how you are trying to realize this from your description. If you are trying to create this within a button symbol it will not work. Explain your approach and if there is code involved, show what you have so far.

The best practice for creating reports and dashboard

Hello guys
I am trying to put together a list of best practice on how to create reports and dashboards using OBIEE presentation service. I know a lot of those dos and donts are just corporate words that don't apply consistantly in real world environment, but still I'd like to know if Oracle has any officially defined best practice or not.
the only best practice I can think of when it comes to building reports and dashboards is:
Each subject area should contain only one star schema that holds data for a specific business information
Is there anything else?

Need to learn how to create a slideshow in Flash

I'm new to Flash and I need to learn how to do a slideshow with exactly the same features as can be found in this link:

Just like at the link above, it needs to play through the slides automatically once the page is loaded, each slide needs to link to a specific URL, and I need controls similar to the boxes at the bottom so the viewer can click on any specific slide they wish to view (I'd like to have numbers in the boxes though). The transitions don't have to slide across like this. If a fade is easier, that would be fine.
Since I've looked online, but can't find any tutorials for doing this in Flash Professional, I think I'll pick up a book on Flash. There are some online tutorials that are close but nothing that is exactly what I'm looking for.
I'm just wondering if anyone can recommend a particular book that covers creating this type of slide show with the links and controls exactly as I need it to be. I see these types of slide shows on a lot of sites now, so I'm hoping that maybe someone else on this forum has had to learn how to do this and can recommend a book they used?
I was looking at Adobe Flash Professional CS5 Classroom in a Book and it looked like it may be what I'm after, but I am rather cautious, as I don't want to end up with instructions that are close to what I am looking for, but not quite right.
Actually, I thought I'd be able to do this fairly easily with Flash Catalyst, so I updated to Adobe CS5 Design Premium. I found that Flash Catalyst can be used to create a slide show like this, but unfortunately it won't play automatically when the page loads and the viewer has to manually click through the slides, which is not what I need. I could be wrong, but from what I've read, I need Flash Builder to add code so the slide show will play automatically if I create it in Flash Catalyst. Since it's not an option for me to buy more software at this time, I've decided to learn how to do this in Flash Professional.
I really want to learn how to do this. I expect to go on and create more using Flash, but for now I just REALLY need to figure this slide show out.
If anyone can help out, I'd really appreciate it!

i'm sorry. it is a huge work to type this and will be confusing as hell. i'm already up to 1 full word page of explanation. Though i am able to do it, explaning it in full lengh is ... well.. very hard. Way harder than it is to make your flash itself.
I can however point you to some element you should read about how to make them:
- How to use timeline in flash cs4
- how to create a button in flash cs4
- How to make "CLASSIC TWEEN" in flash cs4
- How to use ActionScript 2 ( AS2) basic command like : GetUrl, Gotoandplay, Stop and how to put those script in the right location. ( AS2 allow you to put script directly on the button itself. however it is best to put it in the Action Layer that you will have to build in the timeline.
- How to import thing in library.
keep in mind that what you want to make is mostly a Logic probleme...
- Image 1 click = GetURL X,
- After Y time, Switch image 1 to image 2 with animation. Do the same for the button.
- If you click on button 1 while being on image 3, you have to set all the reverse animation in the timeline, and use a lot of Gotoandplay.

Is it possible to build a reliable application with the flash datagrid ???

Next problem in my non-stop nightmare using a flash datagrid to build an application
I have a datagrid in my movieclip.
Under Windows, if I select a row of the datagrid in read-only mode, let's say row 10 on screen, if I then switch the Windows active window (that means the datagrid looses the focus) and come back to my datagrid, the selected row is kept. OK !
BUT, if I select a row in edit mode, let's says row 10, if I change the focused Windows window and then come back to my DataGrid, the selected row is now the first visible row on page ! If I then click outside my Flash application and then back into my Flash application, I get a crash: error #1009:Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
The error message is very short. It seems to focus manager tries to access a TextField property but, which one ? No details, no function name in the error message.
So:
- how to avoid this "change active row when loosing / getting focus" in edit mode of datagrid ?
- how to have more details in the error ? Are there "details levels" in Flash error management ?

Creating a banner in Flash

Hello all,
I am thinking of creating a banner in flash..
What are some of the advantages or options I would have versuses just creating a banner in fireworks..
-One I know I could fade in and out for effects..
-Two I can create movement..
-Is there anything else??
I am creating this for a website and I am using Photoshop, Fireworks, and Dreamweaver..
I am thinking I can just plug into the Fireworks file before I splice it..
-Does this sound right?
I guess I could also just do this in Fireworks yet it probably will not look as cool.

If you want alot of animation or dyanmic effects use flash. If it's basically just static with some links use something else. Of course you can mix and match. The best approach is to just jump in and try something.

How to create web pages in Flash?

Hi,
I am trying to create a personal portfolio website using Flash CS4.
Understand that there are a number of ways to create web pages using Flash.
One way is to create separate swf files for the web pages and load them when the web page is requested.
Another way is to put the pages in separate frames in the same swf file or to use scenes and use gotoAndPlay().
Another possible way is to create separate movie clips for the web pages.
Wonder if anybody can advice the recommended way of creating the web pages.

It appears to be complaining about internal resources, but we have not experienced this issue before and both the management and SQL servers have plenty of resource. The databases are held on a seperate dedicated sql server and I have noticed that when I
try to search for the object, the sqlservr.exe process immediately consumes 50% CPU while the query is running. As soon as it ends (errors) the sqlservr process drops back to a reasonable number.
No changes have been made to either the management server or sql server. We were able to create dashboards one day, but then recieved this error the next.
Has anyone else seen this issue? or can anyone explain what is happening?

when creating a Dashboard widget type

Ones olution I found for this was as follows:
When creating the State widget,the option
to specify the criterion I left blank
and finished the creation of the dashboard.
With that managed to solve the problem.Of course this
is not the solution, or the root cause
of the problem.
I will examine more about this issue, and sohave
the ultimate solution and why such behavior,I post
here.

Toolkit for Create CJ on Adobe Flash CS6 - Exporter.jsfl issue

I am using toolkit for Create CJ on Adobe Flash CS6
The animation need to be supported on HTML 5 devices. When I am publishing the below message appear on the Output window and cannot create the file:
The following JavaScript error(s) occurred:
At line 264 of file "Exporter.jsfl":
out of memory
There are not images, only text and graphics mainly drew on Flash and just a few imported from Illustrator, and I used classic Tween and a few masks. No idea what is “Exporter.jsfl” file stand for.
Is there anyone can help me with this issue?

Creating a component in Flash CS5

Hi,
How can I create a component using Flash CS5? I have tried to follow various documents I have found on google and went about it in the following way:
1. I created an empty FLA.
2. I created a MovieClip containing some graphics, and named the MovieClip "MyTestComponent" in the Library.
3. I selected the MovieClip's properties in the Library and selected "Export for Actionscript", and made the MovieClip inherit from fl.core.UIComponent.
4. I saved the FLA in the directory "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Flash CS5\Common\Configuration\Components" and restarted Flash. At this point I would expect that the MyTestComponent component would show up in the Components panel, but it did not.
5. I tried to publish the FLA as an SWC file and place the SWC file in the same file as above. According to my understanding, both this and the step above should have worked, but it did not.
So, what am I missing?
Also, where can I find an up-to-date documentation on how to create components to be used in Flash CS5?

I managed to get it work at the end...
First, the components directory was at this location:
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Adobe\Flash CS5\en_US\Configuration\Components
Then, to make a component out of a MovieClip, right click on the MovieClip in the library and select "Component Definition" and check the checkbox "Display in Components Panel". What I did then was to right click on the MovieClip and selected export swc file, and saved it in the directory above. This exported only one Component, which was fine for me. Probably it would be possible to do something similar to save a library of components as a .fla or .scw or so, but I don't know the details.

How to create multiple graphs dashboard in Crystal XI using a single View from MS SQL Server 2005?
I need to use Crystal XI and create a dashboard which shows some sales data and stuff, multiple graphs on a single screen.
My tech team says they can display one graph per page but not 4 graphs on the same page as it uses a common view from SQL Server 2005.
How to manage this? Can we call in multiple views / graphs in the same page? Say 4 graphs on the same page?
We use ASP or .NET for calling crystal reports into the App.

Have you tried creating multiple sections, putting each graph in a separate section and then underlaying the sections so they appear next to each other?
