Create .folio overlays with XML

because I could not find anything about this topic, I wanted to ask this question here.
Is it possible to create overlays for .folio files with XML data?
I know there are special tags for images or tables, but how about overlays?

The current folio file format is an extension of XML laid over compressed image files.
There hasn't been much documentation on the scripting extendibility, but i have seen some good examples of CSS and HTML5 content. Unfortunately HTML5 and XML haven't been playing nice. We have loaded things like XML galleries (built with HTML and xml) from our own server and just placed them inside a HTML overlay (not a webview overlay). You could probably also do this with a "local html file" just make all the assets are there to grab. Using HTML overlays has been the current workaround for things like streaming video from an outside source.
You can also create entire articles from an HTML document, i havent tested that function myself so i can't comment too much on it (and the documentation is vague at best)
As far as loading XML data directly into the overlay creator-- I dont see how you could do that and not interfere with Overlay creator's own XML process.
Best solution... trail and error.

Fixed Layout ePub - please help me embed video and/or use Folio overlay with web content
Hi
I have an In Design file used to create a print book (11"x11") and have decided to use CC 2014 to create a fixed-layout ePub 3 for a digital version. I converted the book over with minor issues of having to change the font and it looks beautiful.
I would like to add videos at the end of the book to take advantage of the flexibility of the digital format. I create a year-end slideshow of my photos and host them on Vimeo.
I have tried the following:
Using the Vimeo standard embed code in an HTML element
Using the old flash Vimeo embed code and converting to HTML - worked great on iBooks on Mac but not on iPhone/iPad as flash-based
Hosting and linking to videos on my own web server and using the Media - insert video link to the mp4 file
Hosting and linking to videos on my old photo server at smugmug.com
I can embed the actual videos but, at their smallest size they increase the file size of the ePub from 78MB to 400MB...
I then thought I would use a Folio Overlay - Web Content.
The idea is to use this blank page on my website which would look for all intents and purposes like another white page in the book - 2012 Slideshow - Oren Photography
The overlay works in Folio Preview but not when exported as an ePub
Is this a limitation of the ePub format?
Any help/advice/suggestions on fixing this are greatly appreciated.

My interest in embedding videos was largely to minimize the final file size and amount of space used on each person's device. I ended up following your advice about using Adobe Media Encoder to minimize the size of each slideshow but it still increased the final ePub from 65 MB to over 200 MB. And that was with video quality that was far inferior from what I could offer through an embed or, my final solution, a link out to my website.
I happen to be of the same thought as Bill that most people are now connected to the internet and would favor a smaller file with access to online content over a very large file. I would have liked to embed the videos and allow 720p quality inside the ePub over the link I ended up settling for.

Creating a Link with XML Files
Hi,
I am trying to import a XML file in a table structure following instructions from the Adobe help file (could only find a CS3 one, I am using CS4, the link to it: http://www.adobe.com/designcenter/indesign/articles/indcs3ip_xmlrules.pdf). Now the import works fine and my table is displayed correctly. My plan for this is to have XML files created from a database so when they get overwritten it will automatically update the tables in the file. While importing it I chose the "Create Link" option and I can see it in the links panel. All that seems fine. My problem is from this point if I do any changes to this file it gets added into my template along with the original with no formatting. So normally imported it looks like:

And all I edited was the code value to be 10001 on the link yet it makes all these changes. Now if I edit the original XML file again it will crash Adobe CS4 and it freezes and says encountered error and closes. Does anyone have any advice on this situation? Is there a simple way to get XML tables inserted into a document that will change in the document if I edit the original file. If I have to change the XML that is fine as I can output it from the database pretty much whichever way I want.

Any help would be appreciated.I wasn't using "Edit Original" before, but now that I do, I'm still unable to duplicate your result. When I edit and save, the results are just as one would expect. What application are you using to edit the XML? I am using Text Wrangler. What platform are you one? I've been testing this on a Mac, but could try it on Windows of that's what you are using. Also, out of curiosity, what does your XML structure look like? Here's mine:

Creating survery form with xml
Hi,
I have urgent requirement to creat survey questionaire form where user can download survey form and fill it offline and then post it through mail to particular id where all info related to him will be stored in DB.
I was looking to xml and java for this where survey form comes as xml file and user fills it and then mail it and at other end java can read it and stores info in DB .
Can anyone suggest how it can be done or has more idea.

If it is an absoloute requirement that the survey be sent through email, an xml file would provide a standard format for the survey data and make it easy to process.
On the other hand, if you are sending the survey to a servlet (recommended) then perhaps parameters are the way to go (depending on how many survey questions there are and what you want to do with the data after recieving it).
If there are a lot of questions then it can get quite fiddly to process all the parameters (you'd typically send one per question). This also ties the recieving servlet to a particular data format (i.e. if you want to add or remove a question, you need to recompile the servlet).
I'd suggest wrapping the survey data in XML using javascript like I mentioned before and send that XML string as a single parameter. That way you can have your servlet parse the string and then pass on a Document object to another class for processing. If you decide you want to do something different with this data then you can just change this class.
Whether it's easier or not to process/produce XML vs HTML parameters really depends on how complex your XML structure is and how many parameters you need. Overall, XML gives you greater flexibility but you will have to write the javascript for generating it. Using straight parameters is the quicker way.
If you use XML, the important thing is to not let the user directly edit the XML file.

How do I create an interactive PDF file in InDesign CS6 with Folio Overlays?
I have been trying to export an interactive PDF file using InDesign CS6. It exports fine, and all the content works except for the Folio Overlays I created. I created two Folio Overlays (one Pan & Zoom and one Scrollable Frame). The overlays work if I preview them from the Folio Overlays panel, but they do not work on the PDF document.
I am using File >> Export... to create the PDF document, and I am sure the PDF document is of the interactive type and not the print type. Am I exporting it incorrectly? Is there a specific step that I have missed somewhere? Do I need to create a Folio Build to make the Folio Overlays work?
When I mouse over the Folio Overlays, I get the crosshair cursor which only selects part of the image when I click and drag it.PDF is one thing. Folios for DPS is another. There is a little bit of
overlap but not much.
The interactivity in the folio overlays panel is for DPS only. -

According to the notes (Publishing Concurrent Requests with XML Publisher - An Oracle White Paper Jan 2005) I've come
across, I need to update the concurrent program definition with a default template (when you submit a request, its in the
'upon completion' last section where theres an option to change or enter a template layout) yet this section is GREYED OUT.
Now according to my notes, to create a template you..

responsibility (Note that this field is available only from System Administration. It is not available from the System
Administrator Forms interface)......."
My query is, where is this 'Update Concurrent Program page'..?

Does anybody know why this could be?

All Adobe's promotional material concerning InDesign and Digital Publishing (including the above "official statement") carefully uses verbs like "create" or "produce". But they never mention "distribute" or "spread", without explicitly referring to their exclusive hosting services. The whole Folio thing (in contrast to the former "issue" format) revolves around not giving you any chance of physically exporting, managing or owing the folio file itself. It's always somewhere on Adobe's or Apple's servers, or on your iPad, which is also as shut as a vault. So there's no way to export a folio file and toss it around like a pdf or jpeg. All you can do (without a paid distribution) is "share" your folio with some others, under the idea of "testing" and "reviewing". But this can be a cumbersome method. And even when paid (for the app), it's still difficult to distribute it outside Apple's or Android's market.
More than a year ago (in the middle of the Flash-on-iOS debate) Adobe users, developers, bloggers, and evangelists heavily criticized Apple's "walled garden". Adobe literally stated "We Love Apple - What we don't love is anybody taking away your freedom to choose what you create, how you create it, and what you experience on the web." Well, you could say now: "I love Adobe, but what I don't love is Adobe taking away my freedom to own my files, and distribute them on my own terms." They let us create, but not spread our ideas. It's like giving you a typewriter and copier, that only works with Adobe stock paper. Like giving you a voice and an instrument, but only allowing you to sing and play in some walled gardens (dress code: Apple ID) or secluded shed (invitation only).
I really wonder why they so fiercely protect 'their' Folio file. Why do they either have to be "under protection" or be turned into apps? I understand why Apple wants and needs to curate apps, but they don't mind me spreading my own ePubs, mp3 or jpegs. Why doesn't Adobe let me put my folio's on my own server, or send them off to someone with my own preferred service? The Content Viewer could easily be an Acrobat-like reader and let the iPad open folio's (by web links or mail enclosures) into it. If I see how many questions, worries, and problems creators and users have due to this whole closed technique and business, it would be easier to just let go and see what happens. Is it money? Of course it is. But my guess is that Adobe would eventually benefit more from it.
So I hope Adobe declares the Folio as an "open" standard soon, but they're definitely not in that stage. Maybe the specification of the file format just isn't ready yet. Maybe some managers need to remember again how to "Spread the Love"... -
Creating AIR/Web Apps. with XML & E4X using AS3
Needing tips using AS3 with XML/E4X to make my project work over the server:
1) Here I'm having trouble trying to create a component with a 'GOOGLE MAP' with the user being able to input their location for directions with once submitting the get directions button that it generates the directions in the datagrid automatically.
2) Including a 'DATAGRID' for customers to be able to retain their info in a datagrid that has been updated by office personnel from an 'AIR APPLICATION' with a XML file that holds the customers info

please note that we found the problem. The problem was that we didn't configure under:
"Configuration-> Security -> Message Security -> SOAP" the voprrect provider to handle the security.
After that was done (extract of domain.xml) the message was understood.

Create offline interactive forms using webdynpro java with XML data source
Hi Gurus,
I am having a scenario like below:
Sales guy request for order list online from portal- Sytem receives the request and creat XML file- from xml file need to create a Offline interactive form-Sales guy fills it offline at customer site- uploads in portal -on submit xml has to be generated with captured data at customer site-Process to ECC.
So my questions are:
How to create the offline interactive form from XML?
Once filled offline interactive form uploaded into portal how to create XML again from pdf ?
Please give some idea on this as this is my first Offline interactive form using XML datasource.

Sorry for replying lately. First of all I did not get your suggestions as your are editing the same posting.
Secondly we will be using WDJ. Actually in between SAP Portal and ECC we are having adobe LCES so we need to create Interactive form using XML only. Once it is filled again the form will be submitted to another application which is running on FLEX, which will process the order.
