Create/Maintain an XML database

Hello everybody,
In the scope of a training period, I have to create an online database of, let's say, music CDs. I want to be able to regularly update it through my internet browser. To be more precise, I want other people to be able to modify it without ever writing a single line of code.
Here is a typical scenario:
I open my browser, let's say IE, to see my whole list of CDs; I realise that "Stiff Upper Lip" was not made by the Rolling Stones but by ACDC, so I click on the "Band" field and enter ACDC. The background programs modifies the database file so that the modification is immediately taken into account.
From what I have read until now about XML, it seems to be just the right solution for me, but I still have not found how to modify live the database source files, and I want to be sure that XML can do that before I go head first deep into the project.
So my questions are:
1) Is it possible to modify an XML database so intuitively (through Internet Explorer) ?
2) If yes, which skills does it require ? I already know C, C++, Java, a bit of Visual Basic and HTML and I would like to learn XML, which one is the most appropriate tool ?
Thanks for your help,
Regis

Let me thank you for your quick and detailed answer Doc,
First you would have to decide what an XML database
is. There are several products that claim to be "XML
databases" and they fall into three categories:
1. Databases that hold scraps of XML, or collections
of XML files.
2. Very large XML documents that contain data.
3. More complex structures.I would say that my database falls in the first category, since I have to manage a simple and not too big list of different devices; if I continue to follow the comparison I established in my first post, let's say that I have to manage a database that consists in several lists: one of CDs, one DVDs and one of VHS.
Next, Internet Explorer is only a browser. You could
write a Java application that accesses a database,
but you wouldn't need IE. Or you could write a web
application (also in Java) that ran on a server, and
you could access that via IE.The thing is that I want other people to be able to use it easily, and the internet browser interface is easy of access.
What you are saying about the Java web application sounds good, but I have never used Java this way (I only created local applications). Are you thinking of JavaScript? If yes, I believe it is usable in coordination with XML, perhaps that this could lead me somewhere?
From the scenario you described, I would say that SQL
would be more suitable than XML. Why so? (I do not know SQL either, so that could also be interesting to learn.)
However if you want
to experiment with XML, by all means go ahead. Just
don't force Internet Explorer to be your preferred
tool.Unfortunately, this is a choice that I cannot make... Just for information, which browser would you recommend?
And also: I discovered after some research the XSLT language. Perhaps that could the right solution?

  • Importing XML database to create equivalent mysql database

    I have created an XML database.Now I need to create a MySQL database with similar structure.
    Due to it's nested structure and complex dependencies, I find it difficult to identify and design the tables and relations in MySQL(I fear of redundancies).
    So,I am looking for some tool or a way to create an equivalent MySQL database.
    Thanks.

    fine.
    But i think exp/imp binary don't support 9i to 10g import.
    so you using 10g export binary to take the 9i database full backup and import into 10g database use the 10g export binary.

  • How many users/ schemas can we create in an oracle database?

    How many users can we create in an oracle database? Or how many users can oracle handle?
    Problem-
    I have to store information of ontologies (I will use countries instead) in db.
    I have to store information regarding countries.
    I have 13 tables in all to maintain for each country.
    Now there are two approaches:
    1) keep only 13 tables. Have an extra column in each table to indicate that a particular
    row stores information for which country.
    2) create a new user/ schema for each country. So we can get rid of the extra column
    needed in 1st approach.
    I have used the second approach. This is because number of entries in each table for a
    given country will be large.
    So initially when the s/w is installed I create a central-user. Each time data for new
    country has to be entered central-user creates a user/ schema, and creates tables for
    this user/ schema. The central user can access the tables of all the countries by
    country_name.table_name. By this approach I believe searching would be easy.
    If there is any flaw in my approach kindly mention it.
    Thank you

    There is no (practical at least) limit to the number of users & schemas you can have in Oracle.
    Your approach, however, is not going to scale nearly as well as the first option you outlined (adding a column). You are going to end up caching every possible variation of the various queries you're going to be executing because you will be referring to so many different tables, which is going to mean that you are doing a lot more work to parsing statements and generally churning through the shared pool. If you create enough users, you're liable to start hitting ORA-04030 errors because your shared pool is so fragmented.
    Additionally, you're likely going to end up with a whole lot of dynamically generated SQL to accommodate new schemas getting added over time which is going to cause you even more pain. Figuring out dynamically what table to join in is a heck of a lot more difficult for the programmer to write and for the database to handle than simply passing in a different country code.
    If you're concerned about having too much data, you can have your cake and eat it to by adding the country column and partitioning the tables based on country.
    Justin
    One other item I forgot to mention is maintainability. Having dozens or hundreds of "identical" schemas makes maintenance a huge pain because something like adding a new column now requires dozens or hundreds of separate DDL statements. You're almost guaranteed that some schema isn't going to be in sync-- it's going to miss a column or miss an index, etc.

  • XML Database Development with JDeveloper?

    Hello, folks:
    I am trying to create XML database through JDeveloper.
    Database: Oracle 10g
    IDE: JDeveloper 11.1.2.2.0
    JDBC Driver: Oracle ojdbc6.jar
    I connect successfully to the database through JDeveloper. There I see many folders listed, e.g. Tables, Views, Indexes, XML Schemas, XML DB Repository, and others. My problem is that when I try to save a large schema file (that I already validated on my local machine) that is roughly more than 300 lines, then JDeveloper is unable to save the file. It saves only very small files that are about 100 lines or less. The error message simply is: "Unable to save XML Schema blah.filename@local (Error saving XML Schema).
    I tried to do it in Oracle SQL Developer too, but got the same error. Can someone please help me understand this problem and how to fix it? Do I need to specify some settings in JDeveloper or SQL Developer? Thanks a lot in advance.

  • How to set SAXParser at command-line interface to create a large XML file

    Hi,
    I am trying to create a large XML file (more than 50 MB) by selecting from Oracle database but failed because of "out of memory" error. According to "Oracle XML Developer Guide", we should use SAXParser to parsing a large XML file. But there is no example to show how to set SAXParser at command-line
    Following is what I use to get xml files. It works only when the file is small.
    java OracleXML getXML -DateFormat -withDTD -rowsetTag PO_HDR -conn
    "jdbc:oracle:oci8:@server_name" -user "ID/password" "select * from table_name"
    When I set SAXParser at the way below,
    java oracle.xml.parser.v2.SAXParser OracleXML getXML -DateFormat -withDTD -rowsetTag PO_HDR -conn
    "jdbc:oracle:oci8:@server_name" -user "ID/password" "select * from table_name"
    it failed with the error message: "In class oracle.xml.parser.v2.SAXParser: void main(String argv[]) is not defined"
    Does anyone know how to solve the problem? I'll be appreciated very much for your help.
    Yi

    here are my ideas.
    register the xml schema.
    using xmldom, generate the desired xml output and return as xmltype.
    then you can use something like this to check.
    declare
    xmldoc xmltype ;
    begin
       -- populate xmldoc from you xmldom function
       -- validate against XML schema
       xmldoc.isSchemaValid(schema_url, root_element);
       if xmldoc.isSchemaValid = 1 then
            --valid schema
       else
            --invalid
       end if;
    end

  • Designing XML Database

    Hello,
    I'm in the process of designing a relatively large XML DB System and I'm having some doubts regarding the best structure for the main XML document, in order to optimize search as well as organizing the document in such a way that is not relational (as I usually tend to think when designing an XML DB, for background reasons).
    Basically, we're trying to create a single XML document, but there's a lot of information spread in other entities and tables. We´re trying to minimize the tables and aggregate as much information as possible in a single XML file, to avoid any "relational" query, but also without getting redundant. To illustrate what I mean, here is an example:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <doc>
         <people>
              <person>
                   <name> Johnny </name>
                   <address> St. Street, 444 </address>
              </person>
              <person>
                   <name> Tom </name>
                   <address> Mr. Street, 444 </address>
              </person>
              <person>
                   <name> Cat </name>
                   <address> Dr. Street, 444 </address>
              </person>
         </people>
         <vehicle>
              <driver>
                   <!-- redundant information, like above -->
                   <person>
                        <name> Johnny </name>
                        <address> St. Street, 444 </address>
                   </person>
              </driver>
         </vehicle>
    </doc>As you can see above, we have some redundant information repeated. Also, most importantly, I have no way of having some referencial integrity. Now, in the next example, I have tried adding a reference, using an ID node in the person element, in order to avoid the redundancy and get some integrity:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <doc>
         <people>
              <person id="10">
                  <name> Johnny </name>
                   <address> St. Street, 444 </address>
              </person>
              <person id="11">
                   <name> Tom </name>
                   <address> Mr. Street, 444 </address>
              </person>
              <person id="12">
                   <name> Cat </name>
                   <address> Dr. Street, 444 </address>
              </person>
         </people>
         <vehicle>
              <driver>
                   <!-- storing just an ID reference> -->
                   <person>
                        <id>10</id>
                   </person>
              </driver>
         </vehicle>
    </doc>But that's my point: am I thinking "relational" here? Is there any other way to solve this, in a more efficient and secure way?
    best regards,
    - Breno

    You may like to take a look at HyperJAXB that I have used recently for a structure similar to yours. In HyperJAXB, you use JAXB binding with Hibernate on relational databas. So that you can get the results as XML document but you can also leverage relational database structure. And you can control all that without writing any code by adding annotations to XML schema document.

  • JDeveloper and Oracle XML Database Development

    I tried to do it in Oracle SQL Developer, but got the same error. Can someone please help me understand this problem and how to fix it? Do I need to specify some settings in JDeveloper or SQL Developer? Thanks a lot in advance.
    Asif

    The XML database engine used in JDev is in fact from SQL Developer. In other words the SQL Developer code base is used by JDev though typically it is an older version than the latest SQL Developer. As such best post this question to the SQL Developer forum and ensure to state which standalone SQL Developer version you're using.

  • "Oracle xml Database" INVALID

    Hi,
    when i executed the following query:
    SELECT COMP_NAME, STATUS
    FROM DBA_SERVER_REGISTRY;
    i got all the objects status as VALID except that
    "ORACLE XML Database" was INVALID
    Can someone help me to make this "ORACLE XML Database" as VALID.
    Thanks,
    Philip.

    HI Frank,
    now what i did was i actually ran catpatch.sql and utlrp.sql after i did startup migrate.
    and when i did
    SELECT COMP_NAME, STATUS
    FROM DBA_SERVER_REGISTRY;
    i got all objects as valid, but i dont see "Oracle XML Database" anymore.
    so now i suppose i cannot reinstall, but actually do a fresh install. and the following are the steps for a fresh install in the documentation
    Installing a New Oracle XML DB Manually Without Database Configuration Assistant
    After the database installation, you must run the following SQL scripts in rdbms/admin connecting to SYS to install Oracle XML DB after creating a new tablespace for Oracle XML DB repository. Here is the syntax for this:
    catqm.sql <XDB_password> <XDB_TS_NAME> <TEMP_TS_NAME>
    #Create the tables and views needed to run XML DB
    For example:
    catqm.sql change_on_install XDB TEMP
    Reconnect to SYS again and run the following:
    catxdbj.sql #Load xdb java library
    Note:
    Make sure that the database is started with Oracle9i release 2 (9.2.0) compatibility or higher, and Java Virtual Machine (JVM) is installed.
    Postinstallation
    After the manual installation, carry out these tasks:
    1.     Add the following dispatcher entry to the init.ora file:
    dispatchers="(PROTOCOL=TCP) (SERVICE=<sid>XDB)"
    2.     Restart the database and listener to enable Oracle XML DB protocol access.
    3.     To allow for unauthenticated access to your Oracle XML DB repository data through HTTP, you must also unlock the ANONYMOUS user account.
    is this right. can u tell me what i should do please.
    Thanks,
    Philip.

    I want to create Maintenance Plan which will take full backup Daily Between 1st Oct to 30 July every year.
    Meance plan should execute Only between 1st oct to 30 July every year, It should take backup Daily basis.
    I have seen in sql server we can create Maintainance Plan But If I set Start Date & end Date then after that End Date the plan will never work.
    So Is it possible to setup Maintenance Plan which will occur every year between 1st Oct to 30 July?
    Can you please suggest me some Way for it?

    Hello
    I have searched for sp_update_schedule store procedure.
    I can not get the roles to make it enable like
    By default, members of the sysadmin fixed server role can execute this stored procedure. Other users must be granted one of the following SQL Server Agent fixed database roles in the msdb database:
    SQLAgentUserRole
    SQLAgentReaderRole
    SQLAgentOperatorRole
    For details about the permissions of these roles, see SQL Server Agent Fixed Database Roles.
    Only members of sysadmin can modify a schedule owned by another user."
    I am using sa user to login Which is Part of sysadmin But in new query I get error that sp_update_schedule not found.
    I try to add role to sa But Not getting that role.
    Can you please explain me how to do it?
