Create Virtual NICs of a Teamed Interface

Dear All,
I am building a Hyper-V Failover Cluster.  I have created a team (two physical nics) which I plan to only use for Cluster Communication, Heartbeat and Live Migration.
I have following questions:
1.  How to create virtual NICs out of this teamed interface and assign them to respective networks?
2.  Do Cluster Communication, Heartbeat and Live Migration Networks have to be on different subnet or they can be part of the same subnet as well?
3.  In both cases that is same subnet or different subnet, how would networks be assigned?
Thanks in advance.

  • Hyper-V cluster validation report "Found duplicate physical address" on nic team interfaces.

I recently built a Windows 2012 Hyper-V cluster with 5 nodes. The validation report shows “duplicate physical address” error (error text pasted below).
The hardware: HP BladeSystem – servers are BL460c blades, in a c7000 enclosure, connected to HP Virtual Connect switches.
Each server has 2 physcal nics, teamed in Windows. In the NIC Teaming console, I created the following Team Interfaces and assigned each a VLAN ID:
    “Team1” (the default team)
    “Team1 - VLAN 204 – Management”
    “Team1 - VLAN 212 - 2012HB”
    “Team1 - VLAN 211 -Exchange DAG Replication”
I also created 2 HV Virtual Switches. Neither one allows management interface to share. They are assigned to “Team1” and “Team1 - VLAN 211 -Exchange DAG Replication” respectively.
Therefore, in Network Connection, I see the 2 physical Ethernet nics, and 4 “virtual” nics. Only 2 of them have IP addresses assigned: Management and HB. These are the two that the validation wizard complains
    about.
The MAC address is not configurable in the NIC Teaming console, so I don’t see a way to resolve this error, except to use separate physical nics. I don’t want to do that because a) I would lose the benefits of
the bandwidth aggregation that Virtual Connect provides, and b) When creating an Interface on a Team in Windows, it looks like it ALWAYS gives it the same MAC address, so that should be a supported configuration.
Everything works just fine, and there are no other errors or IP conflicts or anything else. But I really want to fix it because I don’t know what unknown problems this may be causing.
    From the Cluster Validation report:
Found duplicate physical address 10-60-4B-A9-4A-30 on node Cluster201.OurDomain.local adapter
    Team1 - VLAN 212 - 2012HB and node Cluster201.OurDomain.local adapter
    Team1 - VLAN 204 - Management.
Found duplicate physical address F0-92-1C-13-3C-2C on node Cluster202.OurDomain.local adapter
    Team1 - VLAN 212 - 2012HB and node Cluster202.OurDomain.local adapter
    Team1 - VLAN 204 - Management.

    Team1 - VLAN 212 - 2012HB and node Cluster210.OurDomain.local adapter
    Team1 - VLAN 204 - Management.
    Found duplicate physical address 3C-4A-92-DE-1E-74 on node Cluster211.OurDomain.local adapter VC-Team - VLAN 212 - 2012HB and node Cluster211.OurDomain.local adapter
    VC-Team - VLAN 204 - Management.
Found duplicate physical address 68-B5-99-C0-3D-50 on node Cluster212.OurDomain.local adapter
    Team1 - VLAN 212 - 2012HB and node Cluster212.OurDomain.local adapter
    Team1 - VLAN 204 - Management.
    Thanks!

    Hi Dan,
"It turns out that both hosts had the same default MAC address ranges for their virtual switches. Since the host vNICs were attached to the virtual switch on each host they received the first couple of MAC addresses from the switches.
For details please refer to following link:

  • VMM 2012 sp1: unable to create a logical switch on team with different nics (bug?)

Hyper-V Host is HP Proliant G7 with 4 onboard nics and additional (different) 4-port adapter, all 1Gbit. Server 2012 with latest updates.
VMM 2012 is sp1 with latest updates, server 2012 running in a vm.
When I create a logical switch with teamed uplink port profile in VMM, the job builds the team but fails to create the vswitch when ports from both onboard nics and adapter is used.
I am able to create  a vswitch manually on the team if I do it directly on the host.
If the team is created on either purely onboard nics or purely adapter nics, the logical switch creation succeeds.
In short terms: I am able to create a vswitch based on a server 2012 team with different nics, but not a logical switch. Why?

I have tried assigning both nics in one step, and one by one. When I create the logical switch team with only one nic it succeeds, but then fails when I add the second (unless it is similar to the first).
    Error in VMM is
    Error (2912)
An internal error has occurred trying to contact the dkfuzhv01.mia.local server: : .
WinRM: URL: [http://dkfuzhv01.mia.local:5985], Verb: [GET], Resource: [http://schemas.microsoft.com/wbem/wsman/1/wmi/root/scvmm/ErrorInfo?ID=1010]
    Unknown error (0x80041001)
    Recommended Action
Check that WS-Management service is installed and running on server dkfuzhv01.mia.local. For more information use the command "winrm helpmsg hresult". If dkfuzhv01.mia.local is a host/library/update server or a PXE server role then ensure that
VMM agent is installed and running.
If I add the second non-similar team member from the host itself, I get this error from nic teaming wizard
Validation failed and changes to the system are rolled back
It is not a question of losing connection (been there), management interface is on a different team. And it also fails when second team member is added directly on the host...
So far I will stick to the conclusion that my problem is with logical switch and different nics :)
Oh, by the way nics are HP NC382i (Broadcom) and NC365T (Intel)

  • When setting up converged network in VMM cluster and live migration virtual nics not working

    Hello Everyone,
I am having issues setting up converged network in VMM.  I have been working with MS engineers to no avail.  I am very surprised with the expertise of the MS engineers.  They had no idea what a converged network even was.  I had way more
experience then these guys and they said there was no escalation track so I am posting here in hopes of getting some assistance.
Everyone including our consultants says my setup is correct.
    What I want to do:
I have servers with 5 nics and want to use 3 of the nics for a team and then configure cluster, live migration and host management as virtual network adapters.  I have created all my logical networks, port profile with the uplink defined as team and
networks selected.  Created logical switch and associated portprofle.  When I deploy logical switch and create virtual network adapters the logical switch works for VMs and my management nic works as well.  Problem is that the cluster and live
migration virtual nics do not work.  The correct Vlans get pulled in for the corresponding networks and If I run get-vmnetworkadaptervlan it shows cluster and live migration in vlans 14 and 15 which is correct.  However nics do not work at all.
I finally decided to do this via the host in powershell and everything works fine which means this is definitely an issue with VMM.  I then imported host into VMM again but now I cannot use any of the objects I created and VMM and have to use standard
    switch.
I am really losing faith in VMM fast.
Hosts are 2012 R2 and VMM is 2012 R2 all fresh builds with latest drivers
    Thanks

Have you checked our whitepaper http://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/Hybrid-Cloud-with-NVGRE-aa6e1e9a for how to configure this through VMM?
Are you using static IP address assignment for those vNICs?
Are you sure your are teaming the correct physical adapters where the VLANs are trunked through the connected ports?
Note; if you create the teaming configuration outside of VMM, and then import the hosts to VMM, then VMM will not recognize the configuration.
The details should be all in this whitepaper.

  • BadRequest: Virtual machines with secondary network interfaces and virtual machines with no secondary network

I'm trying to create an "ExtraLarge" VM with multiple NICs.  The New-AzureVM returns the following error:
BadRequest: Virtual machines with secondary network interfaces and virtual machines with no secondary network
interfaces are not supported in the same deployment, also a virtual machine having no secondary network interfaces
cannot be updated to have secondary network interfaces and vice-versa.
But I have no other VMs.  Or at least I did and then deleted them and all their disks.  The service has no deployments (either staging or production).
Why is New-AzureVM complaining about a mismatch of VMs with and without secondary network interfaces when no other VMs exist?
I have tried many things to fix this, including the deletion of ALL of my resources.  I have deleted and created the service many times, both with an affinity group and without.  I have a screen print of the -debug output if your interested.
    Thanks for the outstanding help.

  • HyperV Virtual NIC not Visable on SCVMM

HI I have installed Hyper V On One of the HP G7 hardware , and SCVMM is on G6 Hardware,
After configuring Hyper V Role, I have teamed the 4 NIC to One Teaming and created multiple VnNIC by using below Script.
Issue here After adding the Host to SCVMM i am unable to find the VNICs, I can see only Vswitch, Please suggest, I have attache3d the screenshot for the references.
New-NetLbfoTeam -Name TEAMNIC -TeamMembers NIC1,NIC2,NIC3,NIC4 -LoadBalancingAlgorithm HyperVPort -TeamingMode SwitchIndependent
New-VMSwitch -Name VSWITCH -NetAdapterName TEAMNIC -AllowManagementOS $False -MinimumBandwidthMode Weight
    Set-VMSwitch VSWITCH -DefaultFlowMinimumBandwidthWeight 20
Add-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name "Management" -SwitchName "VSWITCH"
Add-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name "LiveMigration" -SwitchName "VSWITCH"
Add-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name "VirtualMachine" -SwitchName "VSWITCH"
Add-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name "CLuster" -SwitchName "VSWITCH"VSWITCH
Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan -ManagementOS -VMNetworkAdapterName "Management" -Access -VlanId 251
Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan -ManagementOS -VMNetworkAdapterName "LiveMigration" -Access -VlanId 62
Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan -ManagementOS -VMNetworkAdapterName "VirtualMachine" -Access -VlanId 62
Set-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name "Management" -MinimumBandwidthWeight 10
Set-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name "VirtualMachine" -MinimumBandwidthWeight 50
Set-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name "LiveMigration" -MinimumBandwidthWeight 30

The fact that this does not show up in SCVMM properly makes this an SCVMM issue.
And, SCVMM does not support everything that you can do with Hyper-V.
In this case, SCVMM needs to drive the configuration using Logical Networks and apply this configuration when you host is taken under management.  Only then will SCVMM identify and list everything properly.

  • Bandwidth Maximums on UCS virtual NICs

I'm creating some virtual NICs for ESXi hosts.
What is the maximum bandwidth per virtual NIC?
If I have 4 virtual NICs on a virtual switch in ESXi, what is the maximum bandwidth for the total of the 4 virtual NICs?

    Hi
The total bandwidth doesn't depend on the number of vnics it depends on the blade model, adapter(s), and the type of IOM that you have installed (see link below) .

  • How can I creat virtual channel and traditional devices while my card installed,I can not do?

I installed PCI-6220 card, and I also installed DAQmx and Traditional DAQ in my computer,
but I cannot creat virtual channel at the last step(attachment:TDAQ6220.jpg).
Maybe this is the reason I didn't creat traditional NI-DAQ Device, but I can not creat it.
(see attachment: DAQ Device.jpg, there is no PCI-6220 on list).
    What's wrong?What shall I do?
    Junwei You

    Hello Rainer,
You can see this attachment(6024E.jpg),the 6024E card appears on Traditional NI-DAQ Devices,
but I don't know how can it be created(I don't creat it,we buy the whole system together with the machine).
I tried create a new traditional Device(I want to confirm 6024E), but still I can not see any NI-DAQ device in traditional NI-DAQ device
lists. See the 'Create New....' interface. How can do it?

  • VLAN and Networking and Virtual NIC

    HI,
I have installed Oracle VM 3.2.2, the problem we are getting is when we change the VLAN network for the VM guest OS (OEL 5.5) from Oracle VM Server. the changes doesn't effect. I have shutdown the guest OS and remove the virtual network interface and need to add a new NIC with different MAC to modify the VLAN.
    e.g.
there are two VLAN (segment 10 and 20) 192.168.10.0/24 and 192.168.20.0/24. defined in Oracle VM Server and assigned to all physical hosts.
if I assign segment 10 initially to the guest OS it works fine, but If we want to modify the segment it needs to remove the virtual NIC and have to add a different NIC with different MAC address to fix the issue.
Need to change the vlan segment without removing the NIC/MAC.

I don't think you can do this in rc.conf because you can't have colons (:) in bash variable names I don't believe...
You can just add it to rc.local like:
    ip a a x.x.x.x/yy dev eth0
Replace x.x.x.x/yy with the appropriate IP address and CIDR mask.

  • How to Create Virtual Tape Library for RHEL 5.4

    Hi,
We are planning to use a tape library (well, as our team proposed) so we are trying to create a Virtual Tape Library as a proof of concept on this project. Can you help us create virtual tape libraries using raw devices.
We will be using Virtual Box as our virtualization environment which will run RHEL 5.4. Will this be possible?
Thanks and hope you can give us some ideas.

I tried the exact same setup and it is possible. What you will need is mhvtl and Oracle OSB to get a Oracle Media Management Library (MML).
Please see Integration of RMAN with virtual tape library
The link above should provide the setup info you will need. There were some initial problems, but according to follow up posts later versions of the products seem to have fixed the issues with tape handling.

  • Trouble getting virtual NICs to appear in VM

Hi all. We have the latest release of HyperV running on fully patched Windows 2008 host machine. We have 3 physical dual port NICs in the machine and we are having trouble creating virtual networks and having them show inside a guest VM.
Our guest VM is running Windows 2003 Web, SP2. No network adapters show up under Control Panel -> network connections
In device manager I notice a yellow exclamation under Other Devices. The details for this are as follows:
Unknown Device - Location: on Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to ISA bridge (ISA)
The drivers for this device are not installed.
    Details: Value - ACPI\VMBUS\4&4B018EB&0
Here are the steps we took to create the virtual network:
    1) Open Virtual Network Manager
    2) Click Add on "External" virtual network
    3) Select Intel Pro/1000 PT Dual Port Server Adapter (unused on host machine, but cable is plugged in) - External
    4) Click OK to create virtual network
    5) Go to Settings of VM and click Network Adapter
    6) Select the virtual network we just created under Network: in Settings
    7) Configure IP address etc on new VIRTUAL nic created on host machine. I have confirmed Hyper-V removed all checkboxes under properties of the physical NIC minus Microsoft Virtual Network Switch Protocol
Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? Is there some sort of driver/patch I am missing? Any help would be much appreciated!

    I should have stated;
Windows Server 2003 x86 SE built on VS 2005 R2 sp1, transferred to Server 2008 with hyper V installed, upgraded to SP2. Integration Services setup disk has been run. Mouse control is in and running. Still no NIC drivers.
System built on 2008 Vhost with SE sp0 and upgraded works. I hadn't installed the integration disk. My bad.
So is there nic drivers available or not? The biggest business requirement for virtualization is to save on all the testbed workstations and servers. These run things like Windows 2000 server and workstation, Windows XP, server 2003 sp0. Various testing levels for compatibility with clients. Without this driver natively there seems to be no way forward for the company infrastructure.

  • Unable to create virtual folder. Too many folders

    Hi,
We are getting this error while trying to create new folder in UCM (even trying directly from UCM throws same error)
oracle.stellent.ridc.protocol.ServiceException: Unable to create virtual folder. Too many folders
Has anyone experienced this? If yes, please let us know how you resolved it.
    Thanks!

You don't "store" anything in contribution folders. They are just webdav access points. I recommend zero folders personally.
If you want to upload files using webdav, then I suggest using one staging folder, where files can enter the system. When the document is workflowed and/or verified, it is moved out of the folder. It's more likely however that you'll need a few access points for various types of content as each folder enforces specific metadata.
Now I imagine you are after a way to store all the HR bits and pieces of one person together as a unit. Some people use Content Folios. Personally, I'd just use a metadata field that contains the ContentID of the person's master record. Any new content for that person just gets the master ContentID stamped on it. Just search for that ContentID to get all their stuff.
Regarding best practices, there are lots of quality blogs floating around. Stellent/Oracle don't talk about best practice because each system is used by their clients in a unique way... well, that's what they say.
