Creating a new software instrument track in Logic Pro 9

When I create a new software instrument track in Logic 9, the newly-created track always defaults to "EVP 88 Electric Piano" instead of "Inst 1" like it's supposed to. Why does Logic do this and how can I restore the settings so that it opens the new track as "Inst 1."
Thanks much!!
Alex

That was added around 9.1.1 - presumably so people wouldn't create an instrument and then ask "I created an instrument, but it don't make no sound."
You can uncheck the open library box or go to HD>Library>App support>Logic>channel strip settings>Instrument>01 Logic instruments and change the one called something like "EVP88 Electric Piano" to just "Electric Piano."

I know this question sounds stupid, but i have plugged my m-audio fasttrack usb in and i have followed ALL of the instructions. now i can't seem to be able to hear my guitar through the computer speakers, and garageband isnt picking up a guitar signal. also, when i go to "new track" and i select "real instrument" i cant create the track because the button is not highlited (or whatever, i just can't click it) SOMEONE HELP!! ITS DRIVING ME CRAZY!

Zowie! Thanks. I was goin' cuckoo, till I dropped in on this thread. I could record into Garage Band through the built-in mic in my PowerBook, but when I plugged in my cool little Tascam US-122 usb audio interface (even with all my input and output prefs properly set), I couldn't record a thing through a real mic. The sound inputs were definitely getting into the computer, but for some reason Garage Band wasn't recording them. I quit outta GB, then dumped the .plist and .cs prefs as you suggested. Re-opened GB and created a new track. Bingo! My Tascam unit now works like a charm. Thanks again, much.

  • Bug in SURROUND when instnciating new SOFTWARE INSTRUMENT?

    Hi all
    Is this a bug?
This only seems to appear after mix is up to say a dozen tracks.
Whilst working in SURROUND ... I have some audio and some software instrument tracks running ... instanciate a new EX24 or KONTAKT 3 by choosing NEW TRACK with a key command ...... choose NEW SOFTWARE INSTRUMENT .... when you've opened the new instrument, everything in the mix is shunted over toward the left hand side of the room.
There's no apparent way to get the mix back to where it was so you have REVERT TO SAVED?
    Best
    Dick

If so, don't.....   Use the New Project command instead
at the startup of the song it creates 5 busses......
using Empty project....... Every new SI.... same issue
It may be you have created a template, or are using one.. that includes those busses....
I do use a template song with some busses, but it creates 2 new if I create a new Software Instrument.
    I don't understand this behavior.......
This issue occurs using the command New Software  Instrument tracks, and not creating New Audio Tracks
The unique way to avoid this for me is to copy a SI in the Environment and then change its Inst channel....

Ah.. then I suspect you just need to go to Logic's prefs/Audio and check CoreAudio...
    It has been unchecked somehow...
Also.. as an aside.. Be careful not to create such large subject names in future when posting here.. They can cause issues with replying to posts in such threads.. due to a bug in the forum software.. so please keep them short and to the point...

I am trying to import standard midi file that I created in Band in a Box into Logic Pro 9.  I can not get all the track to play with internal instrument sounds... only the piano track.  how can I get the others to play... drums, bass etc????   Help

Don't drag the midi into an open Logic project. The tracks won't set up correctly.
'Open' the midi file with Logic as if it were a Logic project. Then all the tracks will be set up so you can start editing them and applying better saved sounds and instruments, but you'll be at a starting place where you can hear what's going on.

  • Using your own sample to create a software "instrument" track

I'm trying to get my Yamaha to play a sound sample I created myself (a typewriter sound) by adding it as a Software "Instrument" track on GarageBand, so I can record the sound repeatedly by striking the synth key over and over again (it has to be done in varying speeds and rhythms, so I don't want merely look the same sample over and over again.
Is there any way to do this, or am limited in using the samples that come in the various packs Apple sells?

  • Newbie:  How do I create a new Audio Instrument?

    Hi there,
Sorry to be asking such a stupid basic question, but I've searched high and low and it is not obvious.
I want to start a new Audio Instrument track.
On the Track menu, I select "Create", and a new track will appear. However, it is always either an Audio track or a MIDI track. Never an Audio Instrument track.
Can I change the other track types into Audio Instrument tracks?
If I click-and-hold on the track name in the Arrange window, a pop-up menu appears, but there's no obvious way to change the track type.
    Thanks

That menu that you clicked should hold 5 options. The middle one (since I'm not looking at the software right now I can't be 100% sure) should be the "Audio Instrument" track you are looking for. Your five options should be along the lines of MIDI track, Bus, audio instrument, Master Fader, and Audio Track. The middle one is what you are looking for. After that, in the arrange channel strip window to the left of the arrange window, go to the selectable I/O menu at the bottom and select any of logic's many softsynths or the excellent sampler. I hope that helped. I'm on another computer and couldn't pop open my software to confirm all this. The MIDI tracks that it opens up to are next to useless, as they are meant as General MIDI tracks for some purpose that I have not yet found a use for. Hope that helped!

  • Can't record software instrument track to an audio track

I'm frustrated at the moment. I'm sure this has worked before.
I have a project that contains external MIDI tracks, software instrument tracks and Garageband instrument tracks. All tracks play when I unmute them. The external ones play thru a Roland synth and audio comes back via ADAT thru my Firestudio interface.
I created an audio track for each MIDI track. I can record the output of each synth track as audio one at a time. But if I unmute one software instrument track, send it's output to channel 1 and 2, set the inputs of my record-enabled track to 1 and two I get no audio recorded. I know it's gotta be something simple that's wrong, but can't figger it out.

If you want to record an internal software instrument to audio you can just select the track and use the "export track as audio" command from the file menu. Or you can select the regions and use the bounce in place feature or solo the instrument in question and use the bounce command and import the resulting file. Logics INPUTs 1 and 2 are not the same as Logic's OUTPUTS 1 and 2. If they were you'd get a feedback loop. If you are careful and MUST do it this way, you can cable from outs 1&2 to inputs 1&2 but you must first disable the output the track you are recording on to to avoid feedback.

  • How do you record an external Midi Instrument + Software instrument track down to a combined Audio track ?

I have two piano sounds I'm trying to blend into one. One is an external MIDI module set up as an external instrument within Logic and the other is a software plugin instrument (Ivory II). I'm trying to record the blended pianos into a single audio track so I can ditch the midi track and more so the CPU intense software Instrument track (it's killing my setup....). For the life of me I can't figure out how to assign both these entities as inputs and get them to record simultaneosuly onto an audio track.
My setup is a Presonus Studiolive 16.4.2 with the following assignments:
The external MIDI module's audio output is routed stereo directly into channel strips 9 and 10. By default the firewire output of this channel strip is returned to firewire outputs 9-10 on the studiolive, but this really doesn't matter since recorded audio is being monitored thru the main output buss assigned to channels 17 and 18.
My software plugin (Ivory II) is routed to output channels 17 and 18 which is the default setting for routing the output to the master buss for the Presonus.
On my audio track that's setup in Logic I can assign the inputs to 9 and 10 and I get the external midi module's output to record, but I cannot find any way to get the software instruments output into this mix because there is no input assignment for this.
Is there any way to combine these two entities and assign them to record onto a single audio track or am I missing something here? If there's no simple way to do this, can somebody offer any tip or ideas on how to accomplish the same thing here. I really need to ditch the software plugin. My setup only seems to be able to handle one plug in at a time on the software instrument side. Not sure why that is because my setup is not that old and the memory on my MBP is maxed out at 4GB....but that's another topic of discussion
Any suggenstions would be much appreciated...

    Thanks for the reply....
I actually tried freezing the software instrument track and that had little if no effect on CPU. I then read in the book or somewhere that the freeze function really only works on effect plugins. Don't know if that's true in all cases, but that seems to be what's happening.  Still would like to combine these tracks and I'm guessing I'm going to have to get creative with bussing or subgroups to make this happen. Unfortunately I think the fact that my Presonus board has hardmapped output routings for all the inputs makes that difficult, but haven't actually tried yet. I'm thinking if I can reroute the midi modules audio output input into the Presonus to a subgroup and then route the software instrument plug in to the same subgroup that I can then mix/capture this and hopefully route the audio's input to the subgroup to pick up the mix.
Does this make sense to anybody reading this?
We'll see and I'll post the results if it works....
    thanks...b

  • Export software instrument tracks

Is there an easy way to convert the software instrument tracks into audio files so they can be exported and used in 3rd party digital music programs...ie..Pro Tools, Digital Perfomer...etc...??

There are two ways of going about this.
    a) The 'solo tracks' method already described in this thread. This will produce versions of the each track with the effects, panning and any level changes intact.
    b) I usually create in GB and mix in Cubase LE. I've posted my method:
    http://homepage.mac.com/rfwilmut/notes/GBtoCubase.html
just subsitute your program of choice for Cubase. This method produces the tracks without effects etc. You can do the basic copying out in one stage, but then you will probably have to re-save each track as described, depending on whether your program will import them as they stand.
Each method is perfectly valid, just choose the one which suits you best.

  • Does the updated CC 2014 create a new softwares or just update the old ?

    Hi everyone,
This question's for saving free space on my hard disk :
    - Does the updated CC 2014 create a new softwares or just update the old ?
    - In that event, can I uninstall the old version of CC ?
    THX !

    Hello,
here a publication from outside of Adobe. (I fear they have some problems at the moment, I cant reach their wesites):
    http://www.zdnet.com/adobes-2014-creative-cloud-update-desktop-upgrades-new-mobile-apps-cr eative-hardware-7000030627/
and a German article (I'm sure you can translate it).

What concerns "can I uninstall the old version of CC ?" yes you can, I for my part would keep it for a while, if your harddisk has enough space.

  • Copying an entire software instrument track from one project to another

    Hello,
Is it possible to copy or import one entire software instrument track from one GB 3.0.2 project to another? At the moment I've got to copy a region from one project, open another project, paste it in the 2nd project, and open the other one again (which appears to close the 2nd project) to copy the second region. This is incredibly cumbersome because I can't have both projects open at the same time.
Has anyone found a less tiresome method to do this?
    Thanks

The easiest work-around I can imagine is to join all regions of the track and copy that. Another option is to freeze the track, which will turn it into normal audio. You might also add your MIDI parts to the library. That will avoid the need to switch between projects, but does require one or two more actions.

  • HELP! Maximum number of Software Instruments Tracks reached!

WHY IS THERE A LIMIT?! I've got 94 patches, but lots of layers and splits.
What is this limit and how can I get more software instrument tracks?!
I've been using it live for a few months, but this could be the endgame. =(
    sk

So I'm running a fairly intense mainstage concert.
Macbook (black) 4gb ram, 2.4ghz CPU
My first 30 patches are various general sounds that get used a ton on cover-band/top 40 gigs. They include pianos, rhodes, b3's, pads, guitars, and that type of stuff.
Every one of those patches also has strings layered (I bring them in with a foot pedal) and breath control horns layered.
I have now moved those layers to Set level to reclaim some instrument channels. I'm having to do some less-than-pretty workarounds to make this work elegantly in live performance.
The other 60 sounds are layers and splits for specific songs (i.e.: Madonna Holiday, Jessie's Girl, all the way up to sounds for Britney's Gimme More, and Love Song by Sara Bareille).
Most of the time I have 2-3 sounds/layers I'm going between for each song, usually swapping with a foot pedal.
I also have a small bank of left hand bass + piano, organ, rhodes type patches with the same layered Strings and Horns as above.
I perform professionally with a dozen different event entertainment bands and acts. They are constantly adding and exchanging material. I need (1) mainstage file for all of them. I just can't go between files and constantly be needing to get to other instruments that I have to wait to load.
My load time for my file is a little under 60 seconds, and I'm using about 50-60 of my own EXS multisamples taken from my existing keyboard rig (I've got all the important sounds for most every tune I do on my Fantom, and have been sampling and adapting them to EXS24).
So, while 256 software instruments may appear unusual, once you consider the needs of a flexible professional using the software, 256 is quite a limiting number. I also don't usually see a set list ahead of time (a few bands I work with don't use set lists, they just call tunes) so the idea of building a set ahead of time is not practical nor feasible.
512 would last me for a long, long time. I'd probably eventually hit the limit, but it would be a couple years. 1024 seems like a reasonable maximum, especially if it's an arbitrary limit in code with no bearings on memory management, or any drastic engine-rewriting behavior.
PLEASE increase the limit. Nearing 256, Mainstage still runs snappy, I've got 1.5gigs of RAM open for additional samples. An arbitrary limit of 256 is just silly. Every keyboard out there has >1000 presets and sounds available. My Fantom-X allows me 64 internal performances (with 16 channels each) and 64 performances on a card. That's 2048 'instrument channels'.
Please!! I am addicted to the coolness of mainstage and I don't wanna go back to hardware. I just did a gig in Cancun and all I had to bring was my laptop.
