Creating a symlink directory on a network share to a path below a mapped drive letter, local path, or UNC path does not work

Am I correct in assuming I can not create a `symlinkd` to a network share, local path, or a UNC path on a network share that will be accessible by clients?
###Mapped drive letters don't work:
1) navigate to a network share:
pushd \\windows2008server\share\
2) make a hardlink:
mklink /d test_sharedir t:\directory\
dir .\test_sharedir
#Directory of Z:\test_sharedir
#File Not Found
UNC paths don't work:
1) navigate to a network share:
pushd \\windows2008server\share\
2) make a symlink:
mklink /d test_dirunc \\windows2008server\share
dir .\test_dirunc
#Directory of Z:\test_dirunc
#File Not Found
I can create a functional `symlinkd` on a local drive to a mapped drive letter or a UNC path.
Are my assumptions above correct?
We are in the middle of a migration and have created two symlinkd to UNC paths for shared DLLs, one below c:\windows\system32\ (directing to a share containing 64-bit DLLs) and one below c:\windows\syswow64 (directing to a share containing 32-bit DLLs).
On the file server, we have had a path to 32-bit DLLs (from Windows 7 clients: s:\dll\).  I am attempting to rename this directory so that it is accessible via "s:\dll32\" and would like to create a symlinkd that links "s:\dll" to
"s:\dll32" [again where S: is a mapped drive on a Windows 2008 server].  How do I do this?
Thanks,
Matt

Hello Mandy,
The link you sent me is for Netapp CIFS server daemon contained within DataOnTap (the Netapp OS) to follow symlinks.  I am inquiring about the Microsoft products Windows Server and Windows 7.
To gain a better understanding of the Microsoft Windows Server and client (Windows) CIFS stacks and interaction of the stacks, I have referred to Figure 6 "Server Message Block Server Model" within the following (albeit older) document: http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/8/0/2800a518-7ac6-4aac-bd85-74d2c52e1ec6/tuning.doc
You will see the following:
I assume that the Windows Server CIFS server service must be "smart enough" to determine that a CIFS client is attempting access to a SYMLINKD and actually fill the request by following the SYMLINKD.  The CIFS server service does not appear
to operate like this.
1) Am I correct in my assumption that the CIFS client (redirector) and the CIFS server (server) do not following symbolic links (whether they be file or directory)?
2) If not, how do I submit a feature request for this so that it can be reviewed and approved or not approved for inclusion/hotfix release?
Thanks for your time,
Matt Brown
[UPDATE]
Note that you can use a `directory junction` instead of using a SYMLINKD, to link to LOCAL resources (source). However, `directory junctions` do not allow access to resources over UNC.

  • TS1398 Hi...My wifi is not working. It is not dimmed out. When I turn it on it does not pick up any of the networks around me (I know there are a lot of networks available) I have tried resetting my wifi with the steps above but it still does not work. Pl

I have the most recent update.

That you are getting the BONG is a good sign, it's unlikely to be hardware if you are able to hear that.
Start by running SW update. It's not that there is a specific fix, but when updating it may rewrite some system files which may get this going again purely as a side affect. Worth a go, and should not harm the system.
Try reset the PRAM - Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
Hopefully one of these quick fixes works, otherwise we'll need to try isolate the issue next - so if still having a problem, I'd try create a new user and login as that user to see if the issue persists (which will tell us if it's system wide or user specific)

  • Splitting does not work on a networked drive.

My iPhoto Library is on a following networked drive connected by cat6.
    Linux:CentOS 4.2+samba 3.0.10-1.4E.12.2.
In this environment, splitting photos does not work. When splitting photos, initially photos are splitted into two events. Then I change a event's name from 'untitled event' to something.
After that, new directory is created automatically to store photos of new event, and then photos of a new events are moved into this new directory. However, in actuality, new direcotory was created and was renamed, but none of photo was moved from an original event directory into a new directory. As a result, iPhoto lost links for these photos, and I can't access these photos any more.
I think permission of iPhoto Library is correct. Because I can add, edit and delete photos manually within iPhoto.
As a workaround, I create a new event first manually, and then cut & paste photos into that from an existing event.
According to posted topics in this forum, it seems that iPhoto contains a problem when iPhoto Library is stored on a networked drive. Is this also an issue that only Apple can fix...?
    Any hint would be grateful.
    Thanks in advance.

My problem was also solved. The root cause of this problem was ':'. When splitting events, iPhoto attempts to create a folder named like '2007:08:16' temporarily. In my case, as I described my Library was stored on a Linux Server via the Samba. But the Samba refuses a folder name which is including ':'.
That's why, iPhoto was not able to create this temporary folder.
To solve this problem, you have to throw the Samba away and use another file sharing architecture. I decided to use netatalk. Netatalk can accept ':' as a folder name.
I already installed the netatalk on my Linux Server actually and tried splitting events. As a result, iPhoto was able to split events as expected.
    FYI:
From my understanding, most of NAS products are using the Samba as their architecture. People using NAS has a possibility to face this problem.

  • Unzip does not work if osx is integrated in active directory

    We have the following problem:
Unzip of zip-files (containing folders) does not work as soon as the osx client is integrated in active directory. The zip-file is located on the windows server file share. The share is mounted over smb to the client. We try to unzip it directly on that share with osx integrated zip / unzip functionality.
If we copy the zip-file to the local file system, unzip works.
If the zip-file contains just files, unzip works.
Under osx 10.8 unzip works. The problem occurs if we use 10.9 or higher.
There is no entry in the system log file.
If we try it with a 3rd party tool (stuffit expander), it works.
Deactivating of all of the domain policies does not solve the problem.
The problem occurs also if we mount the share with domain admin credentials. So there is not a problem with user rights.

I have found the correct answer!  After hours of research and chat with Verizon, I know it is operating correctly.  Here is why:
If I have WIFI on, Verizon appllications can not be downloaded.  So, if you are in the Verizon apps section for programs preloaded on your screen or any applications through Verizon, you can only download using 3G or 4G.  If you have WIFI on, you must shut it down to use 3G & 4G networking of Verizon.
Any other downloads, not through Verizon, will download over WIFI.  Even though the icons for 3G & 4G are visible when WIFI is active, they are disabled.  My problem was reinstalling all the applications originally installed on the phone.  To do that, WIFI must be shut down.
So  the phone is working properly.  I did find someone with Verizon who filled me in on this information.  Thanks everyone for your help.

  • SWP 6.4 install on second computer in wifi WIN 7 network does not work for me.

As administrator I see the clip window, can open and close it but no menu, so I cannot use it.
As user the switch in the toolbar is there but it does not activate the clip window.
On both machines the OS is Win 7 Home Premium, the printer is the Smart 109B. Printing through Wifi to my printer which is attached to my desktop as a USB-printer works fine. But i take it the real printing is not involved in working with SWP. Maybe networking but I cannot find any hint. Pse help me.

    Hi Tomasz,
as I figured out, this problem is related to the usage or measurement of the InDesign-document  at least for me.
I create two portrait-oriented InDesign Layouts.
For the first I choose Print-usage in the New Document-dialog.
For the second I choose Web-usage in the New Document-dialog.
The first will render as bitmap (wrong).
The second will render as PDF (correct).
Folio- and Article-Image-Type is set to PDF in both cases.
    Strange behavior.
    Regards

    OK. Ingo, have a look:
attached below is what you see whenever you create new article. So, if you create 10 articles, you have 10 opportunities to set the rendering intent differently. I think this is wrong, as the image format setting applies to the whole folio. Or maybe it has changed recently? If not, the least what should happen is a warning, that your new choice changes the actual setting.
    Cheers,

I don't know since I don't share anything. You'll have to peruse the help files and check the permissions and ACLs on the Shared folder. According to the permissions on the Shared folder everyone can R&W. If you want those to be inherited by everything dropped into the folder, add an ACL for

  • WEP network does not work

After upgrade to Snow Leopard, I tried to connect to my home network. It uses plain WEP key (ASCII key, not a "password").
My network at work uses WPA and after upgrade, it just worked, I did not have to set any keys or anything.
Home network with WEP does not work. I see it, but I can't connect. I tried deleting and creating the network again in preferences. I'm sure it's 128-bit ascii key, it has to be exactly 13 characters. The network then uses DHCP and works on all other computers. I can't change to WPA, because I have a wifi-connected printer without WPA support.
Any idea what could have changed after upgrade to Snow Leopard? I never had any problems with that network when using 10.5.

The desired network can be the only network in the list of networks
When you click on the desired network you are prompted for a WEP key.
When you enter the key, the "failed to connect" shows up in the lower left corner of the dialog.
The key was verified by two others in the room who were able to get on using the same key (one on a dell, one on an hp.)
The network is inside a stone building so there is very little outside interference. The same laptop was able to connect to the same network last week before the upgrade to snow leopard.
My wifes 2006 Macbook pro is unable to connect to open networks and looses our time capsule network several times a day even though it is in the same room less than 10 feet from the time capsule and has all bars lit up. This is all happening the very next day after a Snow Leopard upgrade.
What ever changed in snow leopard, made the wireless worse. Is there a way to get the old wireless drivers back?
    Thanks for your Help

  • Datasocket does not work with two network cards

If I have two ethernet card in a PC. The Datasocket server does not work if the second card is enabled. It keeps displaying resolving IP Address. I am wondering if there is a solution for this problem.
    Thanks

Thanks for you reply. One card has a static address(10.20.35.1), which is used for Data socket, and the other card uses a dynamic IP address. The card with dynamic address is only used for connecting the PC to the company’s network.
The second card, when turned on causes the Datasocket server problem. In the Datasocket Server manager I have only two IP addresses under Permissions Groups. (10.20.35.1 and 10.20.35.11. 10.20.35.11 is the IP address of the remote PC with labview application. The Datasocket is used to transfer data between the two PC’s)
I am wondering if my set up for hosts in Datasocket Server manager is not correct.

  • I created an Apple ID using my ISP Email when I registered at the Store/Apple Support Communities/iTunes/Face Time and it does not work in iChat. Why Not ?

    Question:-
I created an Apple ID using my ISP Email when I registered at the Store/Apple Support Communities/iTunes/Face Time or other portal and it does not work in iChat. Why Not ?
    Answer:-
For a Name to work in iChat it has to be an Valid AIM screen Name.
Only Apple IDs from the @mac.com ending names registered here  and the Mobileme (@Me.com ending) names are Valid with the AIM service as well as being Apple IDs
(I am still working on info about registering with iCloud at the moment but if this does give you an @Me.com email it may well be a valid AIM name as well)
    NOTES:-
The @mac.com page works by linking an external (Non Apple) email with a @mac.com name.
This External Email cannot be one linked to an Existing Apple ID (you have to use a second email or register at AIM )
The options at AIM are to use your existing email or create new name and link the existing only for Password recovery
MobileMe (@me.com ending names) were valid Emails addresses, Apple IDs AND a Valid AIM Screen Name
@mac.com names look like emails but are only Apple IDs and iChat/AIM Valid Screen Names.
The AIM registration page seems to be pushing you to register [email protected] This is relatively new and I have not followed through the pages to find out if it a valid AIM email (Previously you could register a name without an @whatever.com suffix)

    Question:-
So I have my current [email protected] email in iChat as I thought as I had linked that to an Apple ID it was a Valid iChat Name.  It keeps coming up with a UserName or Password Invalid message.  What do I do next ?
    Answer:-
    Open iChat
Go to the Menu under the iChat name in the Menu Bar and then Preferences and then Accounts in the new window.
Commonly written as iChat > Preferences > Accounts as directions/actions to take.
If it displays with a Yellow running name in the list you have a choice.
Either register it at AIM (I would use a different password to the ISP Login) and then change the password only in iChat  (It may take you to confirm any Confirmation email from AIM first) in iChat > Preferences > Accounts
Or you register a new Name at AIM (Or at @mac.com) and enter that (details below)
If you have a Blue Globe name  (@mac.com) that will not Login the chances are that it the password that is the issue.
Apple lets you create longer passwords than can be used with the AIM Servers.
Change the Password at iForgot to no more than 16 characters.
Then change the password in iChat as details above.
Adding a new Account/Screen Name in iChat (that is valid with the AIM servers)
    Open iChat if not launched.
Go to iChat Menu > Preferences > Accounts
Click the Add ( + )  Button at the bottom of the list.
Choose in the top item drop down either @Mac.com or AIM depending on what you registered
Add the name (with @mac.com the software will add the @mac.com bit)
Add in the password.  (If you don't add it now iChat will ask you each time you open it)
    Click Done.
The Buddy List should open (New Window)
The Accounts part of the Preferences should now have the new name and you should be looking at the details.
You can add something in the Description line which will then title the Buddy List (Useful when you have two or more names) and make it show up as that in the iChat Menu > Accounts and the Window Menu of iChat when logged in.
You can then highlight any other Account/Screen Name you don't want to use and use the Minus ( - ) Button to delete it.

  • The Create List Item workflow action does not work in document library with document template

My end goal is more complex but below is a basic example of the issue I’m having that just simply does not work.
I'm trying to use a site workflow to create an item in a document library that has a document template applied to it but the file that gets created by the workflow is corrupt and cannot be opened.
I created a document library and edited the document template by adding some text to the header and changing it to a Word docx file instead of a Word dotx file. I tested the document template by clicking the files tab in the ribbon and then clicking new
document which opens the document template in Word and allows me to edit and save the document back to SharePoint. Then I created a SharePoint 2013 site workflow in SharePoint Designer that contains a single Create List Item action, and that action creates
an item in the document library with the name field statically defined. I published the workflow and then manually start it on the site. The workflow completes successfully and when I navigate to the document library the document has been created by the workflow.
When I click on the document to open it in the Word Web App it throws the error pictured below and if I open it in the Word client application it just opens a blank document and not the correct document template.
I also tried using a SharePoint 2010 workflow with pretty much the same results. Opening the document in Word Web App gives the same error as above and opening the document in the Word client application gives the error pictured below.
Come on Microsoft creating a Word Document in a SharePoint Document Library from a SharePoint Workflow should just work! Is this a bug or does anyone have any ideas on what is causing the this issue?

I had the same problem with corrupted document - this worked for me:
    1. Create a 2010 Workflow which creates the list element in a document library
(you may start this workflow from your 2013 workflow if applicable)
    2. In the Create New List Item properties - make sure to set ContentTypeId to your content type
("Id for indholdstype" is Danish for "Contenttype ID")
    3. Your Content Type template should be a ".docx" file - NOT a ".dotx" file...!
(I have always created my templates for content types as .dotx files - seems Microsoft wants us to use ordinary .docx files as template files for content types)
    Hope this helps you!

When i click on iPhoto it tells me to choose my library or create a new one. However no library option appears. I have searched the computer for the library but it does not seem to exist anymore. I did not have time machine set up, so there is no back up. Is there any way i can retrieve my library?
Here is a picture of what appears when i click on iPhoto:

In terms of searching i have searched for photos on my finder. However, none of the photos that appear are from my iPhoto Library.
Search with FindAnyFile. You can download it here:   http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/index.php
Search for any file with "ThumbJPGSegment" in the name. If you added at least one image to your library, the library should contain a file with this name, see OldToad's post: Re: Since I updated to iPhoto 9.5.1, my library is not listed or available.
