Creating a symmetric design from a hand-drawn base

Hi Everyone! I'd really appreciate if anyone can lend some of their knowledge to help me out - happily using illustrator for bits and pieces but am puzzled with a challenge. I have designed a logo for a company rebrand which they are really happy with; the only thing is that one aspect of the logo is a kind of 'swirl stroke' (see here: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10152942325330722&set=gm.376755052425546&type=1&th eater ) which I had hand-drawn and modified in Illustrator. They would like this aspect of the logo to appear less hand-drawn, and be as symmetric and clean as possible (ie. in no way hand-drawn). Could anyone give me some pointers on the best way to go about achieving this? How would you do it?
Many thanks for reading,
Matt

One possible solution could be:
- Draw the top and bottom bezier lines with the pen tool
- Then select both and use the "Object -> Blend -> Blend Options -> Specified Steps"
- Then "Object -> Blend -> Make"
- You can then "Object -> Expand -> Object" for separate lines if needed.
- Then do other other things like add a "Variable Width Profile" to the lines, etc.
Maybe it will help your efforts, others may suggest alternatives as well.
EDIT: you already have suggestions on the page you posted your example.

  • How to create a boundary/outline around a hand-drawn item for laser cutting

    Hi!
I'm really new to Illustrator (having moved from CorelDRAW) last week and I'm really struggling!
I've got a laser cutter and the idea is to hand draw something, scan it in and then vectorise etc using Illustrator. However, I'm unable to create a boundary around my drawing once it's been 'expanded' so that the laser has a line to follow and cut.
I hope I'm explaining it so you can understand?  I know that this is the 'boundary' tool in CorelDRAW...
    Thanks in advance!
    Sarah

AI has no boundary tool. You have to manually draw/ create an outline that encompasses the artwork so it can be cut. To that end you can use any means you deem suitable from combining duplicates of your existing artwork with Pathfinders to manualyl re-drawing sections...

  • Troubleshooting: Help please. Creating a PDF file from a Photoshop-designed project

I wanted to add personal design elements to my resume so I decided to use Photoshop to add in a logo and a footer. The problem is, when I converted the 3 Photoshop .psd files (3 pages) to .pdf files, the combined file came out to be very big in size. The biggest was 2.88 MB and the smallest that I got it to be without compromising the quality of the text and images was 1.48 MB.
    What did I do wrong?
I've seen other .pdf files with more images and more color and definitely more pages and text which were only 300KB in size. How can I make my final .pdf file size small but still retain the quality of the original design from Photoshop?
I've tried merging the layers before saving. I've tried turning the files into .gif files before making the pdf. Into jpegs before making the pdf. Changing the canvas and image sizes in Photoshop into super small which made the final pdf file unreadable and super blurry. I'm at my wit's end.
    Details:
.psd image size 8.5 by 11 inches (normal resume size)
colors - black, gray, light blue and light yellow
Images are very minimal, 4 lines total and around 5 circles at the header of the first page and footer of the 3rd page.
    Help please!
    X-cross-post: Acrobat Forum-X

This is so sad. I read your comments and I said, "Huh?" Haha!
I tried the indexed color option and it did make the final file smaller. Around 600KB. But there's probably another way to make it even smaller like the gazillion-paged pdf file that I mentioned that was only about 300KB.
And by saying a layout program, does that mean like Adobe InDesign? Does that mean that I should just make my graphics in Photoshop and then import using another program and finish the file there?
What other layout programs can I use?
    Thank you so much!

  • Form created with Livecycle Designer with a SQL database - do you need LiveCycle Forms installed?

    Hello,
I'm REALLY hoping someone here can help me, I have spent over four hours on the phone to Adobe in the last 3 days and I'm getting no where what-so-ever. I can't even find out where /how to complain about it! (but thats another story)
    Here's my situtation:
I work for a company with approx 140 staff. On one computer, we have Adobe Livecycle Designer ES installed, and we have used that program to create a form which has a link to a SQL database.
The link in this form doesn't work on the other computers which has the basic (free) Adobe Reader. From doing research within these forums
, I have found that the form will not work on other computers unless they have Adobe Livecycle forms installed on their machines.
What I need to know (and what they cannot seem to tell me when I call), is two things:
Is it correct that in order to use a form created in Livecycle Designer which has a link to a SQL database, that the machine must have LiveCycle forms installed?
How much does Adobe LiveCycle Forms costs?
PLEASE, if you can answer this question, I would REALLY appriciate it....
    Thank you!

I presume you are asking if you need Livecycle Forms ES? Forms ES is a component of the livecycle software suite intended as a document service which will be installed on a server within the organisation. A couple of things this document service can do is to render XDP into multiple formats (PDF, html, etc.), execute script server side (for example the database connection) on behalf of the client (reader, etc.), integrate with backend components, etc. So no you do not install this on each client.
For database connections to work, you either have a server with Forms ES installed which can connect on each clients behalf (ie. Client->Forms ES Server->Database), or you have a reader-extended PDF to allow connections to be use in the free basic Reader (i.e. direct calls to the database or using web service calls to your own database components). However, reader-extended pdf would probably require Reader Extensions ES component installed on a server (you once off extend your developed pdf through this and then hand it out to each of the end users). Not sure if the Acrobat Reader extensions will cover this functionality since I have not tried that. I dont think it does. Otherwise you would need full acrobat on each client.
How much database integration is your form actually doing at the moment? read only? Full access? And how many clients do you expect to hit your database? Depending on what you need the form to do, there is always the option to try and build the integration yourself. Do simple http submits from the browser (hosting reader as a plugin) to some component somewhere which in turn hits your database. Wouldnt require additional licensing but alot more development work.
As for cost for the various components, thats a question only Adobe can answer for you since they all sit squarely in the enterprise space and licensing for that is not as simple as off the shelf products.
Maybe someone else has a view on it or has an alternative.

  • Ai-cs6 How Do I trace a hand drawn sketch to a single line vector outline?

So I am basically a brand new user to ai-cs6 and have been working on a project for a friend. I've drawn up the basic components of the logo she wants, all separate individual pieces. My intention is/was to trace in each piece, and scale, rotate, and clean them up according to how the final piece should look. Where I'm running into trouble is that the sketches are not point perfect, meaning there's some shading in the hand drawns, and the lines are rough in areas. I'm trying to avoid redrawing the pieces because we both are really happy with where they're at. What I'd like to do with ai-cs6 and I'm hoping this community of creative individuals can help is to trace very simply a one line vector of the outline of the image. So instead of creating a piece that has stroke straight from the scanned in artwork, I get a single line, with multiple points, that flows the simple shape of the piece. From there it seems it would be pretty simple to just increase the stroke weight and modify the style of line to make it look how we would like. All I've succesfully been able to do so far, with the help of some videos and google searching, is to get a traced image that's basically an outline of the sketch. This is o.k. except that since the sketch has some rough line sections ai-cs6 is adding either a lot of detail and making it look pretty rough, or it's missing entire sections and leaving them blank. Any insight and help into getting this figured would be great, I'm gonna roll with what image trace is giving me so I can give her an image of the logo today, but hoping that I can clean it up and get closer to a finished product by next week. Thank you very much I'm grateful that there are discussion forums like this out there to help users of all skill level continue flowing and working with these awesome adobe products.

What you're talking about is generically called autotracing in centerline mode. Most autotrace programs can either try to trace all the way around the areas of dark pixels (outline tracing), or try to trace along the middles of areas of dark pixels (centerline tracing).
In Illustrator's autotrace settings, for centerline mode, you turn off the tracing of outlines (fills) and turn on the tracing of centerlines (strokes). That's the basic setting. From there, you try to adjust the various threshold settings to get as close to what you want as you can.
When Illustrator's autotrace feature is set to try to trace centerlines, it also tries to set the vector path stroke weights to approximate the thicknesses of what it interprets as a stroke. So after the autotracing is done,  you can expand it and then globally set the stroke weight to a uniform value.
Beyond that, no one can really advise you more specifically without seeing the specific image involved. Every image is different.
Generally speaking, autotracing is crap. It's an amateurish workaround to avoid doing what should really be done: Trace the paths manually with the drawing tools.

  • Hand-drawn animation -- Loosing frames in Timeline

    I'm using CS4 Extended.
I was trying to create a traditional style hand-drawn animation using the Animation Timeline.  I'm creating key drawings, then going back and inserting the inbetween drawings.
The problem is when I insert a blank frame (Layer>Video Layers>Insert Blank Frame), I end up loosing the last drawing in my time-line.
    This is what I'm doing...
    1.  Create a document.
    2.  Add a new blank video layer.
    3.  In Document Timeline Settings I change Frame Rate from 30 to 24 fps (and leave timeline/range at 240 frames).
    4.  create a drawing in frames 1 and 2
    5.  go back to frame 1 and insert a blank frame between frames 1 & 2, and create a drawing.
so far so good... I have 3 drawings.
This is where I loose frames...
    6.  Every time I try to insert another blank frame between any of those drawings, I loose the last (3rd) drawing.  It just disappears.  I use Alt+Ctrl+Z to get my last drawing, and I'm stuck with my 3 frames.
(I originally thought the last frame was somehow falling off the time-line or layer range, but I've made sure it was extended beyond just those 3 drawings.)
    Am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks!
    Paul

if you are working with frames then why not just use frame based animation?

  • This workflow cannot be imported because it was created in SharePoint Designer for a different Site

Hello everyone.  I am getting this error when attempting to move minor workflow changes from mirror SharePoint development / production environments and hoping someone can help me.
"This workflow cannot be imported because it was created in SharePoint Designer for a different site, or the original workflow has been moved or deleted.  To move a workflow between sites, use Save as Template (.wsp file) instead of a Visio workflow
    drawing."
So basically I have taken an image of our single SharePoint server, Domain Controller, and a client and restored them to an OFFLINE development environment for the testing of workflow changes prior to production.  I've put quite a bit of time into one
particularly and would like to export/import rather than re-created from scratch.
I've successfully created the form template and imported.  This created the necessary list items nicely and the form appears to work as expected.  However, when attempting to import the .VWI file exported from dev SharePoint, I am getting the above
error.  If I change the .VWI to .zip and remove the "workflow.xoml.wfconfig.xml" file, then re-zip and change the file extension back to .VWI I get a dialog that allows me to import, but I have to choose a new name and much of the related content
is lost.  I need to be able to overwrite/merge the existing workflow with the import.  Any suggestions?
One strange thing I ran into was during a test of an export/import from and to the exact same environment. If I simply export to .VWI, then import from .VWI with no changes, SAME everything I still get this error. Very weird. Hoping someone can shed some
light on the subject. Thank you.

  • Suggestion:  Create a Database Design Forum

I recommend the creation of a new forum dealing exclusively with database design questions, such as setting Primary Keys, Unique constraints, Check constraints, Indexes, schema-creation scripts, etc. There is no forum devoted exclusively to this topic now and I feel it would be very helpful to the user community. It would certainly make searching for answers to design questions much easier.

    1. How to create a relational model certainly IS relevant to Oracle, which is a RELATIONAL DBMS.Oracle also supports data warehousing (star schema designs), network/hierarchical designs, object-relational designs - or pretty much any data model that you may come up with. Calling it just a relational DBMS is incorrect.
    2. Your point that logical models are independent of specific technology is correct. What you're missing is that if a specific technology makes use of a certain foundational body of knowledge, that knowledge is a legitimate topic for a forum whose users use that specific technology. That is putting the cart in front of the horse IMO.
I would rather see data modeling and logical database design being done in a way that is untainted with specific vendor implementations and technology used. There needs to be a clear line dividing the design from the implementation. If not, then design decisions can (and will) be made based not on the correct logical data modeling principles, but whether it can be "handled" by the technology. A design that is tainted like that, will always be less than optimal (especially as technology is continually evolving and changing).
An OTN forum for database design will invariable be tainted with Oracle technology - and instead of learning sound data modeling fundamentals, a warped view of data modeling will be conveyed. Where doing abc will be acceptable (when it is not), because Oracle has feature xyz that can make the flawed design work (in a fashion).Excellent points. I think (or at least hope) such a forum would attract some number of pure theorists to straighten out the view. This might make for a lively forum, and might actually influence the real products, and might even get the cart on the right side of the horse.
Hmmm, I guess I do sound hopelessly optimistic.

Hi, I have the Adobe Create Suite 4 Design Premium for Windows and have lost the Application disk #2 and cannot reinstall this on my new laptop.  I have the licenses and the rest of the disks.  I have called Adobe and they no longer support CS4.  They suggested I try to find someone who has the software and get a copy of disk 2. I am surprised by that... my understanding (albeit poor) of copyright is that you are allowed to make a copy of a disc for your own personal backup storage
That does not include making a copy to give to anyone else

  • Can I edit a form created in Adobe Designer/livecycle in Acrobat Pro. 8

    Hello
I have a client that sends me PDF's created in LiveCycle.  IN the past I've used the following information to open these files.
You can however create a workaround if you absolutely must edit an LCD form in Acrobat. If the form is not a Dynamic form, open the form in Acrobat and choose Document | Extract Pages. (You'll know if the form is not a dynamic form if the Extract Pages command is not grayed out). The extracted pages will not permit accessing the form objects in Acrobat. All scripts in the document are lost and naming conventions for field objects are bizarre. However, the form is editable.
If you want to convert an LCD dynamic form to an editable Acrobat form, you need to use Acrobat 7 Pro. This won't work in Acrobat 8. In Acrobat 7 Pro choose File | Create PDF | From Web Page. Open the form in the Create PDF From Web Page dialog box. Again, all scripts are lost and field object names are bizarre, but you can edit the form in Acrobat 7 or 8 Pro.
But these files must be saved as Dynamic pdf's. I have tried saving them as static forms but the Document | Extract Pages is still greyed out when I open in Professional?  What gives how can I get around this most annoying situation?  I need to get the extract pages from being greyed out?
    Thanks,
    Dan

Acrobat 8 Professional includes LiveCycle Designer 8, so if the form was created with LiveCycle Designer 8 or older, the yes should have the option to edit the form. Acrobat 8 Professional under the menu option 'Forms' will have an option to open the form in LiveCycle Designer. If the form was created with a newer version, there could be some issues with newer features not available in version 8.

  • Can I combine a form created in Livecycle Designer with a standard pdf to create a new document?

I have a fillable form that I created with Livecycle Designer along with two standard pdf files.  When I try to combine in Acrobat Pro 10 it identifies the form with XML data and will not allow me to complete the process.  Thanks in advance for any help with this.

No you cannot... this is one of the things my organization struggles with.  I love livecycle becuase of its dynamic form capabilities, but we have so many other pre-built pdfs in adobe pro that can not be merged with these forms.  It is truly frustrating!!!  wish i had a better answer for you.  Also from the book 'Creating Dynamic Forms with Adobe LiveCycle Designer' page 6... "The PDF files that Designer creates are structurally different than other PDF files...... LiveCycle Designer can edit a PDF form created in Acrobat, but Acrobat can not edit a PDF form created in Designer."  Likewise... XML pdfs do not merge with other pdfs. JoBeth

There is a terminology issue here.  From Acrobat Pro X you launch Designer
not LiveCycle ES2.  LiveCycle is a server product.
When you install Acrobat you have the option to install or not install
Designer.  Look in the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat 10.0
and check to see if there is a Designer 9.0 folder.  When in Acrobat you
should be able to create a new form and it will prompt if you want to use
Designer.  If all else fails you can always go into the Designer 9.0
    folder and launch FormDesigner.exe
