Creating additional LR4 Catalogs

Hi,
From time to time I purchase books to learn more about Photoshop and Lightroom. If the books provide example photographs that are available on the authors website, I typically download them and import them into my LR catalog where I keep all of my own photos. One thing that I find annoying is that the photos provided with the books often have keywords embedded in the metadata and this corrupts my own keyword list with those of the authors. So I have decided that I want to create a separate catalog that's just for photos that accompany books so my list doesn't keep importing new keywords that I havent created on my own.  Working out of more than one catalog is new territory for me. Is it OK to have two catalogs on the same computer and do I need to worry about where I create the second catalog? I have heard that managing multiple LR catalogs can be challenging and don't want to commit some kind of grave error.
Thanks,
John

Thank you. Lightroom originally created my catalog in my MyPictures folder which has been fine. Is there a preferred place to create the new catalog? Also, if some of the photos are in my existing catalog can I just tell LR to remove them from that catalog and then import them into the other one?

  • Lr5 won't open catalog on external HD (created with Lr4)

Up to now I used Lr4. Always had my catalog and images on an external HD. Never had any problems saving changes in that catalog to that HD. Now I upgraded to Lr5 CC. After installation, I tried to open my catalog on said ext HD but received the following error report:
Lightroom cannot open the catalog named “...” located on volume “TOSHIBA 1TB” because Lightroom cannot save changes to this location.
How can I get Lr5 to work with my old catalog on my ext. HD?
Any help will be much appreciated.

Are you sure LR has writing privileges on the folder containing the LR4 catalog. LR5 does actually not wanting to write to the LR4 catalog but it need to be able to create a new LR5 catalog in the same folder where it will put an upgraded copy pf the LR5 catalog.

  • LR4 catalog:createKeyword creates a keyword inside another keyword and 4th parameter is nil

LR4 catalog:createKeyword creates a keyword inside another keyword even though the 4th parameter (parent) in the call is nil. LR3 API doc says .. 'nil to create at the top level' and thats how it worked. Looking forward to LR4 SDK documentation.

Hmm, I just tested my plugin in LR 4 and it successfully creates a top-level keyword when the fourth parameter is nil.
It would be better to repost and continue the discussion in the SDK forum:

  • Error message while importing upgraded LR3 catalog to new LR4 catalog

I'm using a Win7 x64 system, 3Ghz Xeon dual core, 8 GB ram system.  After upgrading a LR3 catalog to LR4, it would not display all images in GRID VIEW in the upper level folders.  i.e. D:/Photos/2011.  It will display the images in the 2011 folder but not in the Photos folder.  And yes I do have the "Show Photos in SubFolders" selected.
By importing this updated LR4 catalog to a new LR4 catalog the display problem disappears.  However, I get an error message at the end of the import saying that "Lightroom could not import this catalog because of an unknown error."  This occurs after it says it is importing updated keywords.  But, as compared to the LR3 catalog, the new LR4 catalog shows the correct number of images in the catalog, shows the correct number of collections and seems to have all the keywords in the keyword list panel.
Because there seems to be some sort of catalog database upgrade error, I am hesitant to use LR4 for production at this time.  Does anyone have any suggestions as to what this error might be, or a work around for the error so I can be confident in my LR4 catalog?
    Thanks,
    Tony...

I've pgraded to LR4.1 RC1 and then created a new catalog, imported from my original LR3 cat. It updated that temporary cat and then imported to the new LR4 cat without issues or error messages. I then just did an upgrade to my original LR3 cat and saved it in another location. Upgrade went without hitch or error messages and I am now using that catalog.  So far, so good with the new candidate.

  • Problem upgrading windows 3.6 catalog (freshly exported) to LR4 catalog on Mac

I've recently moved from LR3.6 on Windows to LR4.1 on Mac, creating a new catalog in the process.
Now I wish to access my original catalog on the Mac so I first did a full "export to catalog" on the Windows PC (to first consolidate multiple folder locations into a single top-level folder) to an NTFS volume on a USB disk.
Mac obviously read-only on NTFS (in basic config) so I then copied the catalog from the USB to a newly prepared Mac disk. (I'm sure I read somewhere recently that you should do something permissions-wise on a newly prepared disk but can't for the life of me find it now).
I then tried opening the copy of the exported LR3.6 catalog from the new Mac disk & immediately get prompted to upgrade it to LR4.x so click OK.
A few seconds later I get a failure with an error complaining the catalog is corrupted & forwarding me to an LR1.x support page.
As I only have USB2.0 on the PC the export takes hours (280Gb) as does the copy from the USB 2.0 disk to the new Mac disk (via Thunderbolt).
Is there something I can do to "fix" this supposed corruption?
I haven't (yet) tried re-opening the USB-version of the catalog on the PC as it isn't fired up ATM but I have no reason to suspect genuine corruption.
    Any suggestions appreciated!
    Paul

Yep, don't bother to export as catalog.
Look at the catalog on the Windows machine and make sure the folders are shown as a hierarchy (http://www.lightroomqueen.com/blog/2008/12/17/i-have-a-long-list-of-folders-can-i-change-i t-to-show-the-folder-hierarchy/) and set them up that way if they're not.
Then copy your existing catalog over, without needing to export and without needing to copy the files again.

  • Creating photo archive/catalog

Using iPhoto 08 on a grant-funded Mac Book Pro to create an archive/catalog of historic photos for a garden conservancy. Probable outputs: to Power Point for presentations and website for display.
    1) How to export "Description" data from iPhoto along with the image, title, and keywords?
    2) Is there more appropriate Mac-compatible software than iPhoto to create archive/catalog records of photos and export the data and images?

Both iPhoto and Aperture are aimed squarely at Photographers rather than Librarians. The features are designed to help the photographer process the output from a shoot to a usable format, and the databasing is aimed at making photographs easily found. From your description the entire Photographers end is wasted for you. It’s the DB that’s of interest.
    To your specific questions:
--The sidebar data input area displays in very small font size, which makes it difficult to enter and edit data efficiently. Is there a way to increase (to full-screen size?) both the image and data entry areas when working on an image
Just like any app on your Mac, you can drag the bottom right hand corner to make the app full screen. No, there is no way to increase the size of the display font.
As imported, the jpeg file number appears in the Title area. I would like to change the Title to a descriptive one; e.g., "Longthorpe Garden, front entrance," for future display purposes. To preserve the jpeg file number, I've been moving it into the Description area, following general notes about the image. In iPhoto is there a better place to put the jpeg file number? Could that field be sorted upon? Can additional fields (e.g., File Number) be added to the iPhoto file manager structure to customize it? Could that field be sorted upon?
There’s no need to move the JPEG file number. That’s the *File Name*. It remains the File Name even though you add a title to the photo. You can search - either in the Search box at the bottom of the Window, or by using a Smart Album (File -> New Smart Album) on either the File Name or Title. The sorting options are in the View -> Sort Photos menu. You have more sorting options on more metadata in Aperture.
--date: for the Conservancy archive the most important date is the date the photo has taken (1927, 1957, etc.). Currently I'm adding this date to the Description field, following general notes about the image, and before the jpeg file number. Is this the best (only) place to put historical date information? Can other fields (e.g., Date of Image) be added to the iPhoto file manager structure to customize it?
Again, no need to do this. You can edit the date of any photo in the Information Window (click on the ‘i’ lower left) - the date field is perfectly editable.
I think you need to look at other options. The standard database app on a Mac is FileMaker Pro. A little daunting at first, but it’s not too difficult to create a database structure that meets your specific needs. Other apps that you might look at include MS Expression, Extensis’ Portfolio. There are other options I’m sure: search on MacUpdate

  • Need help moving LR4 Catalog to LR5

I followed the steps outlined in previous threads. I located my LR4 catalog. I went to LR5 and did Import from Catalog. It didn't work though. The photos never transfered.
So some backround. I had LR5 Beta and imported a few photos. Those are in an existing LR5 catalog. Also, I keep some of my LR4 photos on my hard drive but most on my external hard drive.
    Please help.

All you really need to do is have Lightroom 5 open your working Lightroom 4 catalog. The program will tell you that the catalog needs to be updated. You click OK and Lightroom will create a new copy of your catalog that will include all of your work and all of your images. It will leave the Lightroom 4 catalog intact and functional with your Lightroom 4 program.

  • Viewing a LR4 catalog with LR2 (iMac G5 2.1, OSX 10.5.8 latest OS and LR that 32 bit syst supports)

Hi, I gave my mom my old G5 iMac, and want to give her a copy of my family photo database (over 70,000 files, mostly raw), which I recently updated to LR4 format. I just take an external drive, name it the same as mine, and copy over the database, keeping file structure and naming identical, so my mom can view all the photos of her grandaughter that she wants. I have done that as a backup for home on an Intel 64bit iMac. Before I send it over, and she tries it, can somone on here tell me whether #1 she will be be able to read the LR4 format and adjustments with her LR2 OS X 10.5.8 install, and whether any changes, such as creating a gallery or collection, would work, or doing exports and printing. Thanks so much!

You cannot view a LR4 catalog with an earlier version of LR.  The catalog database structure is different.  Even if LR2 could open it, the LR4 raw-engine is creating different adjustments than the LR2 raw-engine understands, so it wouldn’t work.  The difference between one LR version and the next is exactly the database structure and the adjustments.
She might be able to import the photos into her LR2 database, but the XMP files won’t necessarily contain the adjustments that LR2 understands, so she’d be seeing the default rendering, not your adjustments.

    Hi,
In your report footer, set it to create a new page before it is printed (In 'Section Expert', select the Report Footer -> 'Paging' tab -> Check 'New Page Before' checkbox). Throw your Terms & Conditions into the Report Footer section.
If you already have a Report Footer that you want to keep, just split the footer into two sections (Right-click the Report Footer section -> 'Insert Section Below') and follow the same procedure for the newly created section.

  • What is the best way to create additional storage AND backup a laptop, as well as the storage?

Beyond being seriously annoyed at an Apple Employee recommended we go the NAS route at an Apple Store no less—only to find it doesn't work for storage OR Time Machine backups of iPhoto (after spending weeks organizing/transferring date, outside of a good deal of coin)—we are now perplexed as how to set up/store based on our needs.
    Goals
Create additional storage (iPhoto, iTunes, documents) for the family laptop
Accessible by anyone/device on the home network (iPad, mini iPad, iPhones, etc..)
Would prefer the ability to access this offsite as well
    Backup of the laptop
    Backup of the storage HD
Ensure we do not lose iPhoto libraries data/files
Here is what I am thinking—need to know if it will work.
    Purchase two HDs
Plug them into my base station
Allocate one HD @2T for storage (additional iPhoto libraries, home movies, iTunes libraries, etc...)
Partition the second HD @3T to handle two Time Machine backups
    (a) Time Machine of the laptop (up to 1T of backups)
    (b) Time Machine of the first HD (up to 2T of backups) - Is this possible?
What I need to know is
Is it possible to partition a HD to Time Machine two backups from different sources—one being a HD?
If this is not a good solution—what is? I am pulling my hair out trying to figure out how to deal with a lot of data related to iPhoto due to the formatting limitations there.

While most do not advocate mixing Time Machine backups with other files, I have 3 Time Capsules with files and backups on the same partition and have never had a problem despite doing it for many years. All 3 Time Capsule are set up as NAS devices.
One Time Capsule holds the Snow Leopard partition backup of two computers. The other two each have a backup of the Mountain Lion partition of two computers. Time Machine is set up to alternate between the devices, which it can now do. On these 2 Time Capsules is a copy of the iTunes Library and a copy of the iPhotos Library, which provides a backup for the two. Every so often I manually copy the new files from the primary iTunes/iPhotos library to the backup on the other Time Capsule.
If the computer is on, I can access the computer from my iPad and then access the hard drives and the files.
Hopefully, I have been able to make this clear.

  • I have mistakenly created two separate catalogs, one in 5.6 and one in Lightroom 5 original.  The latter is on my external drive, the former is on my hard drive. How do I merge them and upgrade the 5.0 main catalog?

In trying to dump my Elements 10 catalog into my LR catalog, I can see I have mistakenly created a second catalog.  My main catalog is on the external drive and remains in the original 5.0 version, the "elements 10 upgraded" was imported into the 5.6 upgrade of LR and is on my hard drive.  Can you advise how I can fix this?
    Thanks in advance.
    Barb in Virginia

OK Jim Hess, that step is done.  So on the hard drive, can I now delete:
    1. the "extra" LR catalog?
    2. the Elements 10 Catalog (which I had previously imported into one of the LR catalogs?
That leaves me with a single catalog on an external drive.  The only question is: what about backup catalogs? how do I determine where my "new consolidated" catalog is backing up to?
    thanks in advance.

  • How can I select 5-star photos in one catalog and use them to create a new catalog

I've been using Lightroom since LR1. I now have several LR 5.5 catalogs generally organized by year and camera. I want to create a new catalog which will contain my best from each catalog. BUT, I don't want to remove the photos from their "home" catalog. The photos will continue to reside in both their original catalog and in the new "Portfolio" catalog. The easiest way to approach this is to filter photos in catalog "A" by rating, select all 5-star photos and create a new catalog containing just the selection. I don't want to export or remove them from their catalog or move them on disk. I want them to appear in BOTH catalogs. Since Lightroom is built on a database that merely points to image files, it seems like this should be possible.
I realize I can create an empty catalog and select File->Import from Another Catalog... , then locate the photos one at a time by name and location clicking the import checkbox - tedious is an understatement when you have several 10's of thousands of photos.
    Any ideas?

    jimfeet wrote:
Yes, that's an option I've considered. But as with any database, size is inversely proportional to speed - larger database equals slower performance. LR 5 is much better than earlier versions in this regard but when you reach 100,000 images you can feel it.
This is incorrect. I accept that you think the database is getting slower, but the database (and really all databases) are designed to work pretty much the same regardless of the number of records, except for perhaps searching through the entire catalog. We have seen in this forum people who are now editing larger RAW files than a few years ago, they see it is slower, and decide it is the size of the database, rather than the size of their photos.
What aspects of Lightroom are slow? If it's scrolling and displaying the previews and searching, then it might be the database. If its displaying images in the Develop module, it is NOT the database at all.
Have you taken steps to improve the performance of the database, such as Optimizing it regularly? have you tried these performance tips: FAQ: Experiencing Performance related problems in Lightroom?

    Scenario Details:
Receiving Zinvoic02 Idoc in PI. Idoc to file translation creates comma separated file with .csv extn
The logic was kept in such a way that how many E1EDP01 (items) are available in IDoc that many no of records will be created in csv file.
The file logic for some the fields is as below:
    No of records
    InvNumber
    InvDate
    CusNumber
    LineitemDesc
    Tax1Type
    Tax1%
    for 1st E1EDP01
    E1EDK01-BELNR
    E1EDK03-DATUM
    E1EDK01-PARTN
    Populate when E1EDP04/MSKWZ=O2 or O4 with E1EDP19/KTEXT
    Hardcode when E1EDP04/MSKWZ=O2 or O4
    Sum all E1EDP04 /MSATZ when E1EDP04/MSKWZ=O2 or O4
    for 2nd E1EDP01
    E1EDK01-BELNR
    E1EDK01-DATUM
    E1EDK01-PARTN
    same as above
    same as above
    same as above
    for 3rd E1EDP01
    E1EDK01-BELNR
    E1EDK03-DATUM
    E1EDK01-PARTN
    same as above

    same as above
Additional Line to be created when one or more of E1EDP01 is having E1EDP04/MSKWZ = O3
    same as above
    same as above
    same as above
    Hardcode "REIM for USE TAX"
    Hardcode ""
    Hardcode ""
Now we have got addition requirement to add a new lineitem when tax code is equal to O3 for any of the E1EDP01.
Is it possible to create additional lineitem based on condition. If yes, please share what should be the approach.
How we can create the additional lineitem?
Currently we are using E1EDP01 to do context handling.
    The target structure is :
    MT_FILE
         INVOICE     0..unbounded
              InvNumber     0..1
              InvDate          0..1
              CusNumber     0..1
              LineitemDesc     0..1
              Tax1Type          0..1
              Tax1%               0..1

    Hello,
Please add one extra field in the data structure of the target mapping and let its occurrence be 0..unbounded under the root node 'MT_ADP_Invoice'.
Apply the condition, if tax code MSKWZ (with its context changed to E1EDP01) equalsS to '03', then map it to the newly created target field whose occurrence is 0..unbounded.
This will then create an additional field which is your requirement.
    The above is one way.
But if you want to have the same target field name as ADP_File appended for tax field being '03'.
Then in that case you can you two message mapping for one common operational mapping / interface.
In the first message mapping you need to have one target data structure created with the source data structure remaining the same as the one shown by you in scrn shot. Now this target data structure will be similar to the source, except that you need to add one more field at the end(name different from other fields) in target (whose occurrence should be 0..unbounded), and it needs to be mapped to E1EDP01 provided the tax code field MSKWZ(its context changed to E1EDP01) equalsS to constant '03'.
In the second message mapping you need to map the target structure of previous message mapping to the actual required structure. The newly added field should be mapped to ADP_File of your final target structure.
This will then create the same structure as required.
Note : Please change the occurence of ADP_File to 0..unbounded.

    Souvik
