Hi all,
I already have a 10gR2 db server running on Rhel4 using traditional file sysmtem.
I need to move my database into ASM and at the same time increate the db_block_size from 8k to 16k.
Please guide me how to proceed? Is there any article on moving the current database from traditional file system to ASM?

As you need also change default block size then create new database using ASM and then use exp(dp)/imp(dp) to move the data from existing (no ASM, 8k block) to new (ASM, 16k block) database.

Creating standby database from ASM production database in standard edition

I am using oracle 10g release 2 standard edition. I recently created a database instance and wanted to create a standby database instance. After sorting out how to achieve this without managed standby and data guard I finally got it working and the shipped archive logs are applied and working well on the standby database.
Now I am thinking of re-creating my production database and using ASM for storage managment. By doing this can a standby database still be created from a primary database using ASM? I want to be sure I can before I commit to using ASM for the production instance and manually creating a standby database from that instance.

ORA-01034: ORACLE not available error while creating ASM or database
Hi all,
I am using oracle database 10gR2 on windows 2000 pro system.
I have Installed oracle software and there was no issue with that but now I am facing ORA-01034: ORACLE not available error while trying to create asm instance or even while creating database through dbca.
I have tried creating the asm instance manually and it was succeeded. Also database creation was successful through manual steps.

Can't create 11gR1 Database with 11gR2 CRS/ASM non RAC, dbca ASM password
Hi,
try to create a 11gR1 SE Database on a single server with 11gR2 ASM up and running.
when dbca ask where to store the datafiles and i choose ASM, i have to give the asm sys password which i know (can connect with sql+).
dbca replies wrong password and i can NOT go further.
is it possible to use 11gR2 ASM with 11gR1 database and create a database with dbca?
any hint for this situation?

it is dbca step 6 from 16, storage option (or something simiular - dbca lang here is german)
the dialog looks like this
ASM-ID-Data (Titel)
enter ASM specific SYS password (prompt)
entering the correct pwd and push OK
dbca shows a error dialog with something like: password for user SYS not valid. Enter a valid password.
Any help?

Issue At the time of Creating ASM instance through DBCA For 11g RAC db :

I have configured two node RAC with OEL5.
I have installed below software successfully under different home locations.
1) Clusterware :

3) Database
I want to run ASM instance under separate home but when i am executing dbca from ASM home location to create asm i am facing a problem which is not traceable by me. Please help me if any body has any idea on it.
Problem:
Sometime(displayed below) ASM instance is running from node 1 and some times from node 2. At a time ASM in both instance is not in online state. At the end dbca is displaying ORA-01034: ORACLE not available. Please let me know what may be the exact reason for this.

SNPYes you are right , I have to make to sure stock budget doesn't get credited.
If you remember in one of my other threads, i wanted to derive commitment item from Matl grp, it was for this purpose. I will derive commitment through matl group at the time of procurement / GR etc and assign a dummy commitment item to stock a/cs. Where as i will derive a consumption commiment item from consumption GLs.

Controlfile corrupted when creating a database - ORA-00202
Hi Oracle experts,
I have two virtual machines, the clusterware installed fine and is accessing shared disks, also ASM is running fine.
When I created the database using dbca everything went fine until the very last end, I saw a window indicating that instances on both nodes were starting then I got this error for the second instance:
PRKP-1001 : Error starting instance vrac2 on node monoravpc11
CRS-0215: Could not start resource 'ora.vrac.vrac2.inst'
In the alert there are these errors:

Problem with create asm disk group
Hi all
I am about configuring ASM, so I have downloaded the Grid infrastructure 11g (32 bit), I have configured and created parameters and directories.
I runned the installer but get stack at the 3 step where I have to change the discovery path. I have taped as path /dev where I have created 3 partitions sdb1, sdc1 and sdd1.
Is there any thing should I perform on partitions may be or parameters to set before I go through the installation?

There are two different methods to configure ASM on Linux:
ASM with ASMLib I/O: This method creates all Oracle database files on raw block devices managed by ASM using ASMLib calls. RAW devices are not required with this method as ASMLib works with block devices.
ASM with Standard Linux I/O: This method creates all Oracle database files on raw character devices managed by ASM using standard Linux I/O system calls. You will be required to create RAW devices for all disk partitions used by ASM.

We have 4 nodes oracle 11.1 RAC with oracle 10g2 DATABASE with ASM in redhat5.1.
the system is not more file system
now my boss want to add additional file system and ask me to create new database in RAC.
My question is which is best to create new database?
1) create second database under existing oracle server.
in these way, which bad effection is for existing DB that support a heavy data loading, GIS application and stream (data replication)
How to configure new ASM for new database? are there two ASM instance in system?
or
2) install new oracle in new directory. configure new ASM and create new database as ASM in new directory.
In this case, it seems that two DB is total separately without touch each other.
I do not have idea.
Please advice me your experience for RAC to handle two or more database and any tips.

Why?
This is not how RAC scales. RAC scales by adding more servers to the cluster, thereby increasing the processing capacity of the cluster. RAC does not scale by adding more instances to a server node.
You want to pay once for the overheads of a database instance. You want to have a single large SGA for the instance to use - as it is better than having 2 smaller SGAs for 2 instances. You want pay, in bytes, once for a system tablespace, temp tablespace, undo tablespace and redo/undo logs. You want to pay once in memory and CPU for a set of system processes for that instance - a database writer, log writer, system and process monitors, etc.
It does not make sense to pay twice for any of these. 2 system monitor processes are not somehow better than one. 2 smaller SGA are not better than 1 large SGA. 2 sets of ASM instances do not provide a better service than a single ASM instance.
My question is which is best to create new database?Create a logical database - within Oracle that means you create a new schema. That schema is a logical database. It can have its own tablespaces. It can have its own resource profile. t can even have its own temp space, etc.

Remember that if you want a 2nd set of instances, you need to use existing memory and CPU top pay for the overheads of that.. which means you will be taking away from the existing instance. Why turn the existing instance into something less than what it was before in order to create another (also inferior) instance?
No, it is better to add to the existing instance instead... rather add a logical database to it. Rather add more space, more memory, more RAC nodes to it.. as that is how Oracle RAC scales. -

Ora-1276 cannot add controlfile - rman duplicate asm database

I am trying to duplicate an asm database olddb -> asm database dup in the same diskgroup. somehow got error 0ra-1276 Cannot add file +DISK1/dup/controlfile/current.1669.754164181. File has an Oracle Managed Files file name.
There is nothing in the asm directory +DISK1/dup/controllfile before I run the rman.

Creating Standby Database / Steps might be missing..
I have created standby database..
The archives are copied except one archived log and those copied archived are not applied at Standby database.
Besides this issue, I just checked the alert log file and pasting its contents here.
Do check it and let me know If I m missing any paramter[s].

Rakesh Soni.Done, I've given the same path in Standby Database [datafiles, controlfiles] as it has been given in the Primary Database.
MoreOver, I m manually switching logfiles at primary database [alter system switch logfile] they are copied and applied sucessfully at standby database. But the archived files that I have copied with cold backup are not applied yet. Infact they are not retrieved executing the below query.
select name, applied from v$archived_log;
How can I apply those archived logs? [archives that copied with cold backup]

Cannot create ASM disk groups in DBCA - Oracle 11gR1, Windows 32bit
Good afternoon,
Using 11gR1 on Windows XP, I need help installing a database (single instance) using ASM, I am not able to select disks to be stamped for use by ASM. I have done the following steps:
1. Installed the Oracle 11gR1 software (no database created - just the software)
2. Connected nine (9) SCSI hard drives to the system
3. Created a primary partition on each hard drive, formatted the partition but did *not* assign a drive letter
4. Created a listener service (working properly - checked with lsnrctl status)
5. Started DBCA to create a single database instance using ASMIn DBCA I performed the following:
a. at the welcome screen, click Next
b. at "Step 1 of 16", click Next (accepting the default "Create a Database")
c. at "Step 2 of 16", click Next (accepting the default "General Purpose or Transaction Processing)
d. at "Step 3 of 16", "Global Database Name" set to "dbca", "SID" set to "dbca", click Next
e. at "Step 4 of 16", click Next (accepting the defaults)
f. at "Step 5 of 16", click "Use same administrative passwords for all accounts" and entered password, click Next
g. at "Step 6 of 16", click "Automatic Storage Management (ASM)", click Next
Everything seems just fine until I reach the following step
h. at "Step 7 of 16", click "Create New"
- The Create Disk Group window pops up (there is nothing shown in the "Select Member Disk Area")
- set the "Disk Group Name" to "DATAGROUP"
- click on "Show All" (no devices shown after clicking)
- click on "Stamp Disks..." this causes the "asmtool operation" window to pop up
- click on "Add or change label", click on Next
- the "Select Disks" step appears. There are 11 hard drives listed but NONE of them
can be selected - all I can do here is click on Cancel*The question:* Why aren't the drives selectable and what do I need to do to make them selectable ?

To answer my own question (now that I've figured it out), the reason is because the partition should not be formatted.
When Windows displays the "New Partition Wizard", it is important to:
1. not assign a drive letter
2. and select "Do not format this partition"
This will cause Windows to mount the volume thus making it accessible to Oracle.
Hopefully this will help someone not fall in this trap as I did,

I finish off create my 10gr2 db at my vmware@centos , i start to do some R&D on ASM on it , i manage to create it using raw-device , i wonder how to i link the existing 10g to this ASM instance ?
Based on some of the article on OTN , internet i found out that most of the article is create ASM instance then follow by DB instance ?
So is it i must create another db instance for this ??i do try to query rman user at dba_users but there is no such user exists ?? any idea on that ? by default there is no rman user in oracle,u have to create it if u want to manage oracle database with recovery catalog.
but in ur case u don't need to create it .
just connect rman with sys user.

I am trying to setup ASM for test purpose on winxp with oracle 10g release 1.
I have created asm instance with
oradim -NEW -ASMSID +ASM -STARTMODE auto
and my pfile located in E:\oracle\product\10.1.0\Db_1\database looks like.

I get

no row selected.
and for obvious reasons I get following message

I have created same fake disks by asmtool and the created diskgroups by "create diskgroup.. " then I was able to see the diks in v$asm_disk view..
