Creating files for digital cutters?

I am relatively new to Illustrator but have experience with other Adobe products such as Photoshop and Go Live...  I am trying to create .svg files that can be used with my digital cutter (Silhouette SD) but I seem to be stumbling around with the process of creating the actual artwork.  Ya know how Photoshop has the 'Flatten Layers' function?  I need the equivalent of that but in Illustrator.  the whole idea is that your finished work should be similiar to a silhouette image so that it will translate in the cutting environment.  If anyone out there has experience with steps to "flatten" shapes into one image that will save as an .svg,  I think that would be a step in the right direction for what I'm trying to do.  Thanks in advance and I appreciate any help or suggestions. Thanks!

Why are you pursuing SVG? The user manual for your device's software doesn't even mention SVG as one of its importable formats.
Ya know how Photoshop has the 'Flatten Layers' function? I need the equivalent of that but in Illustrator.
It's not at all the same thing. Forget Photoshop. Illustrator and Photoshop are from different sides of the graphics world.
All a cutter does is follow vector paths. That's it. Whatever shape paths exist in your file, those are the cuts the knife is going to make. So you need to remove undesirable paths or portions of paths which "cut across" areas that should not be actually cut by the knife.
And you need to turn into actual paths things which merely appear to be paths. The most obvious example is a Stroke. Stroke weight is applied as a printing effect. It is applied to a single path; it does not consist of two parallel paths which define the outer edges of the stroke. So any such merely apparent "edges" that you want the cutter's knife to follow have to be turned into actual paths.
There are numerous features in Illustrator to help you do those things. Telling you specifically which ones to use depends on the specific artwork involved. But one of the most useful commands for this kind of thing is the Merge Pathfinder. Merge causes fills of separate, but same-colored overlapping paths to union into single paths. It also causes fills of separate different-colored objects to "punch" (subtract) each other where they overlap. Like all of Illustrator's Pathfinders, it does a pathetic job in handling strokes. So if your paths have strokes applied, first employ the Outline Stroke command from the Object menu.
To understand this:
1. RectangleTool: Draw a rectangle. Orange fill, thick blue stroke.
2. Ellipse Tool: Draw an ellipse. No fill, thick red stroke. Position this to only partially overlap the rectangle.
3. Line Tool: Draw a which crosses over both the circle and rectangle. Thick black stroke, no fill.
4. Select all. Click the Merge button in the Pathfinder palette. Look at the results. Note that strokes simply disappeared.
5. Undo.
6. Select all. Object>Path>OutlineStroke. Note that strokes are gone, having been replaced by paths which merely look like the strokes, but which are in fact closed and filled.
7. Select All. Click the Merge button in the Pathfinder palette. Ungroup the results. Move the resulting objects apart. Note that areas of overlap are gone. The paths have all been re-drawn so as to abutt each other, but not overlap.

  • DD 5.1 Surround Workflow to create TS file for Digital Cinema

    I need a little help.
My objective is to create a test file for digital cinema. The client requires at the end a TS DD 5.1 mpeg HD file....
I have tried creating the project in Premiere CS4, which is straight forward. The issue I have is in the export. I have been using the surcode plugin. The first question I have is in the routing of the channels. I can only seem to create a Premiere project with the layout of L,R,Ls,Rs,C,LSE where as the surcode only gives you the layout option of L,R,C,LSE,Ls,Rs, which I believe is the industry standard...so I have no idea if the plugin will read the channel allocation correctly.
However, my bigger issue is that I'm not able to export a TS file from Premiere. There is an option to do so, but when I try that with the surcode plugin, the media encoder just crahses...
I have been able to create a single 5.1 surround mpeg file from Premiere with the surcode plugin, but its of no use to the client..and I can't think of a way that would turn it into a TS file that would keep the 5.1 DD.
I have many questions, and there are many things I don't understand...so if anybody is able help at all that would be wonderful.
    Many thanks

What will be the playback medium of this file? How will you deliver the file? Will the client be playing the file on a computer, or on a Home Theater system? Does the client want, or need, a visual signal, as well, or it just the Audio signal that is important?
The best delivery system that I can think of is to create your material in PrPro in a 5.1 SS Project. Unless the client is looking for just the Audio with no Video, handle the two as separate, in that once your mixing is done, you will Export the Audio as an MPEG file, in the AC3 format, with the DD 5.1 SS encoding from the Minnetonka Audio SurCode DD 5.1 SS plug-in. Export the visual material (Video) as a DV-AVI Type II elemental stream. Go to Encore, and Import the DV-AVI as a Timeline, then the AC3 as an Asset. From the Project Panel, drag the AC3 to the respective Timeline, and author a DVD. You can have menus for navigation, if needed, or just make the single Timeline your First Play, with no Menus. If you want it to Loop, set its End Action back to itself and it'll loop until the user hits Stop. Once the layout is as you wish, you have two choices:
Burn to a DVD disc for delivery, or Burn to Folder. The former will get your 5.1 Audio (and Video) onto a common DVD for play on the computer or in a Home Theater system. The latter will yield the VIDEO_TS folder with the necessary files contained within this folder. The Audio & Video will be in a .VOB format, but will be in MPEG-2 form. Note: this will be a DVD-Video disc, and playable in any DVD player. Whether one hears the Audio in stereo, or in SS, will depend on the capabilities of their playback system. Because it IS a DVD-Video it MUST contain Video. Now, this could be anything you choose, from Titles with instruction, to Black Video (I'd create this for real, rather than rely of purely the systhetic Black Video from Premiere - more on this, if you need it), to abstract patterns of your design, or choosing.
Now, if one needed just the pure MPEG-2 file, outside of the VIDEO-TS structure for playback on a computer only, you could take the .VOB and rename its extension .MPEG, instead of .VOB. Still, the playback channels would be solely dependent on the equipment the file was played on. The software player might figure into this, as well, because it must have the capability to process DD 5.1 SS signals. Check out any software player that your client will be using. If you deliver the DVD-Video disc, mentioned above, a DVD software player will be required. Most computers today come with one, and most of these are DD capable, but again, it depends on the hardware on the computer, and how it's configured, that will determine if one hears the Audio in stereo, or in DD 5.1 SS.
Before I launched off doing anything, other than editing and mixing, I would ask some very specific questions. As Harm points out, there is no TS "file," but a TS "folder." This would be a red flag for me, indicating that the client might be confused, or know just a little and not quite get the full picture. This would dictate to me, that I need to ask some other questions and phrase them in a way that yielded useful info and instructions to me.
1.) Exactly what equipment will you wish to play this material (don't start talking files yet)?
2.) Is this equipment capable of playing Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound?
From the answers to those two questions, you can then start filling in the blanks.
If the client wants something to drop into a DVD player, hooked up to a DD 5.1 SS capable system, then you’re home free. If they want something that will play on a computer, Ask these questions:
1.) What computer software will you use to play this material (still no mention of file)?
2.) Is the computer equipped for DD 5.1 SS decoding and playback?
These answers will direct you even more. If you get proper answers of, say CyberLink PowerDVD of #1 and "yes," for #2, go on to the next set of questions:
1.) Can I deliver this material on a DVD-Video (the format and medium of commercial DVD’s)? Note: this will be a DVD that will play on a computer with proper software, or a Home Theater system, and will contain both Video and Audio. The client can turn the TV, or .computer’s monitor off, if they do not wish to view any Video signal, or you can create Black Video so there is nothing to see. With this delivery format, there has to be a Video stream, but it can be black.
2.) Can I deliver this material on a Data DVD? Point out that a Data DVD will only play on a computer and not on a set-top player through the TV and a Home Theater’s Audio system. Some people do not know the difference, and you cannot trust your client to, unless you specifically ask them.
If the answer to #1 is "no," and the answer to #2 is "yes," go on to the next question:
If I deliver this material to you on a Datat DVD, will an MPEG-2 file with DD 5.1 SS be acceptable? If so, I'd still do the Burn to folder to get the .VOB and rename it to .MPEG. Test this file on your system. A .VOB can contain a lot of things, but yours was created with no Menu or other material, so it should be just the pure .MPEG-2 file. Still, test, before you deliver.
Now, on the off chance that your client needs something like an SACD, or DVD-Audio, you will be shopping for software. Before you do, I’d post to the Adobe Encore forum and ask Neil Wilkes for his suggestions for the creation of DVD-Audio discs. Believe every word he types and follow his recommendations to the letter.
Good luck, and if you need more detail, or other suggestions after you query your client, please ask,
    Hunt
[Edit] I see that you also mention "HD." This will mean either a BD (Blu-ray Disc) for delivery, or a BD folder, Burned to a DVD-Video. If you will have HD Video material, your best going the full BD route. If you only will have Audio, the "HD" will not come into play. What exactly do you mean with the term "HD?" This can make a world of difference.
[Edit 2] Sorry about the formatting in the second paragraph. I cannot seem to get it to display properly, though it looks perfect in the editing screen.

Would anyone help me with this problem
I am trying to create a PSE file for implementing the Digital Signature in a Report following the Note 1300880 . When I try to create the PSE FILE.
Use the SAPGENPSE tool to import the file in PCKS#12 format using the command import_p12 as follows:

    Hi
I solved my Issue.  SAPGENPSE failed with only  import_p12  error.
I had misspelt , fat fingers.
    In AIX I ran     env
    Check to see    SECUDIR=/usr/sap/SID/DVEMBS03/sec
I had a spelling mistake and saw the wrong entry.
To set this up, do this in your Instance profile or right before you run the sapgenpse
setenv SECURDIR /usr/sap/FSB/DVEMBS03/sec     Insert your right SID of course.
Also just run     sapgenpse  and it will tell you if you have set the environment correctly..
Worked like a charm, certificate created.

  • I have a new ipad and want to create files for my documents I brought over from my Mac. How do I create file folders?

I would like to create file folders for my documents I brought over to my ipad from my desktop Mac. I downloaded pages and neu.annotate. My files synced without a problem. PDF articles I put in neu.annotate and pages documents into pages but I would like to organize into folders like on my desktop. How can I do this on the ipad3?

Unlike a 'normal' computer the iPad doesn't have a file system and everything on it has to be stored/associated within an app, you can't have separate folders of documents/files on your iPad's homescreens. If the apps that you have support it then you could possibly use Dropbox to store your documents within a folder structure, but you'd then need internet access in order to access them.

  • Create file for export data from Essbase

I wish to create dynamically CalcScript for an unloading of the data from Essbase.
For this purpose I have created variables for each measurement.
How to create procedure for generate a file with my variables?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
There are a number of ways of doing this, you could use the odiOutFile tool and write your script into the text, replacing parts of the text with your ODI variables.
Or you can hold the script in say a db table or file and then create an interface to write a file, it should replace the variable text with your ODI variables if you declare them in a package.
    Cheers

  • Is there a way to create file for ebooks and print?

    Hi folks,
I have been looking around online for information on how (or even if it's possible) to set up book on InDesign that is suitable for producing a print-ready PDF and also being suitable for producing epub and/or mobi files for submission to Amazon, etc.
So my first question is whether or not it's technically possible (and efficient) to do that. I thought it would be great to have each book (with all its subdocuments) set up once, and from that I can produce the PDF I sent to the printers, and also product ebook files.
If it is possible, can anyone point me in the right direction for instruction (i.e. best practices, steps, etc.) for this?
So far what I am turning up online is info on how to set up a book for ebook product OR the usual info on how to set up books for print production. But I've not yet found anything that covers doing both at once.
    Thank you

This is not an easy task, but if you plan beforehand, I think it's feasible to mantain a "master" file, both for print and ePUB. It really depends on the complexity of your layout. For already laid out docs, this could be a real problem.
Nonetheless, it's not a very efficient/scalable approach at all. There's no escape from heavily editing the ePUB XHTML code (and images) after export. Kindle files are another story, but you can generate them from your finished ePUB – with more code editing, of course.

  • How to extract data in order to create file for using program RFBIBL00?

    Hi all!
In order to correct data in mass I need to select corresponding data (3000 FI documents) and extract these into a file in order to correct a field. This extract must having segment 1BKPF 2BSEG... the same file structure than in SXDA_TOOLS for FI documents.
Which program must I use in order to have the correct extract in order to use the standard program RFBIBL00 for creating FI document?
Must I create a specific program in order to create this file or only administrator can do this?
    Thanks for your help!
    David

    Hi
RFBIBL00 is arranged on main strucuters BGR00 (for batcinput session data), BBKPF (for header data) and BBSEG (for item data).
Both structures BBKPF and BBSEG have to be filled, but only the fields have to be used or changed, the rest of the fields have to have the symbol for NO DATA, i.e /.
So there are no standard program can do it automatically, so it needs to creaste a program ad hoc....but it can use the Legacy System Migration Worbech (transaction LSMW) in order to do it,
so your problem can be really how to extract the data to be elaborated by LSMW, but you can do a simple query by se16 and download the result in a excel file

  • Generate files for Digital Editions

Goodnight everyone, am layman in the subject, but where can I get information about generating pdf files and e-pub for readings in Digital Edidion ... I read about Adobe Content Server, but can not find how to buy or install or whatever, can someone give me a start?
    att

It should run.  Have you tried right clicking on the install file in your downloads directory, and choosing 'Run as Administrator'?
If not, see if v1.7.2 installs better.  (It will almost certainly run better after it is installed).
There are lots of bugs in ADE2.0.  Try replacing ADE2.0 with the older but more reliable v1.7.2.
Version 1.7.2, it is a little difficult to find, available on Adobe site for Windows and for Mac.

  • Compressor-creating files for powerpoint

I have been having a tough time getting compressor (2) to give me full size good-looking output clips that are readable and importable (not just as a hyperlink) by PowerPoint on a pc.
Does anyone have any favorite settings? The clips I am using are no longer that 8 min and need to fit onto a cd. So far I have tried MPEG4 (unreadable), H.264 (unreadable), MPEG1 (to small), and MPEG2. I think the MPEG 2 will play nicely with Powerpoint, but when I try exporting a trial clip they either have no audio, or they appear on my desktop as a blank page and cannot be opened by anything!
I am using a G4 desktop with final cut pro 5 and compressor 2. I also have just downloaded Streamclip if that is at all relevant.
    Anyone got any ideas?

The issue here is the PC setup and version of Powerpoint.
I recently had exactly the same dilemma. The very latest Powerpoint will call Quicktime if you insert a quicktime movie and it's possible to download a public beta of the latest Quicktime for Windows which has H264 support.
Unfortunately the most 'universal' setting will however be a WMV file in the Windows Media 9 Professional setting at 640 X 480 pixels. It's easier to produce this on a PC.
    Not great quality but passable.
Not a patch on H264 through Powerpoint on a mac.

  • OAS Create File for Download with PL/SQL Pkg

On OAS 4.0.8.1, I am trying to create a PL/SQL DB Pkg to allow a WWW user to extract data from the DB and download it to their local workstation, for example, a class list of student names and ids in "tab-separated-values" format.
I think I have configured OAS and my browser to understand what to do with a MIME type of "TSV"s. I have issued the ora_util.mime_header to change the content type to "text/tab-separated-values", but all it does is send the header and the data to a WWW page. It appears that either the browser or the server does not recognize what to do with it, to prompt the browser to save the data (which is what I would like to have happen).
I am at my wit's end trying to figure out why it is not working. I have looked at all of the documentation I can lay my hands on, with no luck. Any suggestions, experiences, incantations?
Is what I am trying to do even reasonable? Is there a better way?

  • Workflow for creating files for online printing

I recently asked a question about making a copy of a file in Aperture 2 but am still unsure as to the best method to use. The original is cropped for posting to the web, and the duplicate is to be cropped for standard print sizes. I didn't quite get a clear answer, so I wanted to ask what other users' workflow is for preparing images for printing at an online site (I use adorama, which has an aperture plugin). In my case, my "ideal" crop, posted to a mobile me gallery, is not a standard size, but I do want the print to be a standard size. How do you keep the preferred crop for viewing online but change to a standard crop for printing?
    Thanks,
    John

size is mort important than format. I prefer PSD files, but png, tiff, tga, even jpeg if you do not need transparency. Just make them big enough that at some point in your composition they are scaled to 100%. IOW, if you are drawing full frame animation cells for HD they do not need to be any bigger than 1920 X 1080 pixels. If you are going to scale them up or move in on some details then the area you are going to be pushing in on needs to be 1980 X 1920.
