Creating guest clusters in SCVMM 2012 R2

I’m very new to SCVMM so please bear with me.
I have a basic lab environment consisting of two hosts clustered using some cheap shared storage.
I’ve installed SCVMM and deployed a few highly available VMs.
I want to deploy a guest cluster using with a shared VHDX.
Is the only way to do it by using a a service template, or can I do it another way?
If I do, do I need to create a VM template first to then include it in my service template?
As part of the pre reqs outlined here -
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn249412.aspx it says I need to have the shared VHDX already available.
How do I go about creating this vhdx file on the shared storage?
Thanks

Thanks,
Is using a service template the only way to do it?  Do I need to create a VM template first to be used in my service template?  Also, do I need create the shared
VHDX disk manually somehow or does this get created as part of the service template side of things?

    i installed the SCVMM 2012 version 3.0.6019.0.
When i use the Create Hyper-V Cluster under Fabric page to create a Cluster.
the Create Cluster Wizard doesn't have the IP Address page to let me input the IP for the Cluster.
after i answer all the wizard, the Install Cluster job shown Error 25325
The cluster creation failed because of error At least one IP address needs to be configured..
    so, how to solve it?
    thanks alot.

    Old thread..
But I got the same problem creating a cluster on SCVMM 2012 R2. To get around it I instead created the cluster using powershell and it worked great:
    $HostName1 = "HOST01"
    $HostName2 = "HOST02"
    $Clustername = "CLUSTER01"
    $ClusterIP = "192.168.1.50"
    $VMMRunAsAccount = "VMM_AdminAccount"
    $credential = Get-SCRunAsAccount -Name $VMMRunAsAccount
    $hostsList = @()
    $hostsList += Get-SCVMHost -Computername $HostName1
    $hostsList += Get-SCVMHost -Computername $HostName2
    Install-SCVMHostCluster -ClusterName $Clustername -VMHost $hostsList -RunAsynchronously -Credential $credential -ClusterIPAddress $ClusterIP

  • Live Migration between two WS2012 R2 Clusters with SCVMM 2012 R2 creates multiple objects on Cluster

    Hi,
I'm seeing an issue when migrating VM's between two 2012 R2 Hyper-V Clusters, using VMM 2012 R2, that have their Storage provided by a 4 Node Scale Out File Server Cluster that the two clusters share.
A migration between the two clusters is successful and the VM is operation but I'm left with two roles added to the cluster the VM has moved to instead of the expected one.
For example: Say I have a VM that was created on cluster A with SCVMM, resulting in a name of : "SCVMM Test-01 Resources"
I then do a live migration to Cluster B which has access to the same storage and then I end up with two new roles instead of one.
    "SCVMM abw-app-fl-01 Resources" and "abw-app-fl-01"
The "SCVMM abw-app-fl-01 Resources" is left in an unknown state and "abw-app-fl-01" is operational.
I can safely delete "SCVMM abw-app-fl-01 Resources" and everything still works but it looks like something is failing during the process.
    Has anyone else seen this?
I'll probably have one of my guys open a support ticket in the new year but was wondering if anyone else is seeing this.
    Kind regards,
    Jas :)

In my case the VMs where created in VMM in my one and only Hyper-V cluster (that's been created and is managed by VMM).
All Higly Available VM:s have a FCM role named "SCVMM vmname" where vmname is the name if the VM in VMM. On top of that a lot
of VM:s, but not all,  have a second role name named vmname. Lots of name in that sentence.
All VMs that have duplicates are using the role named vmname.
I thought it had to do with whether a VM had been migrated so I took one that never had been migrated and did. It did not get a duplicate.
Is there any progress on this?

  • Administrative roles for one of several clusters in SCVMM 2012 R2

    Hello!
I have a SCVMM 2012 R2 server in my infrastructure. There is 4 Hyper-V clusters managed by VMM. One of them situated in another city (for example, call it as "Cluster4").
Cluster4 has own host group in VMM.
Can I give administrative privileges only for this cluster to its administartor?
When I tried to create user role for host group, administrator of "Cluster4" could change configuration of other 3 clusters and its VM in other host group. But he's shouldn't do this!
So, can I delegate privileges only for one of cluster in VMM?

The user role you are looking for, is "Delegated administrator". This role let you specify user permissions at the host group level, so you can move your virtualization hosts and/or clusters to different groups in order to isolate the administration.
Before you create new hosts groups and move your hosts, please make sure that logical network mapping is correct to support the workloads running there.

  • I can't find failover cluster management after creating hyper-v cluster on SCVMM 2012 R2

I've created a hyper-v cluster on scvmm 2012 r2 but I can't find the failover cluster manager to move storage resources. all hosts are showing to have hyperv role and failover clustering feature installed. disk Witness in Quorum is good, same as for the
other CSV lun. Please help me Microsoft. Thank you.

The management consoles are not getting installed while building the cluster through SCVMM. However, its not mandatory to have the management tools on the server. You can have it on a different machine with this management tools installed and connect to
    this cluster remotely.

  • Why can't I assign hardware and guest os profiles to servers in the new SCVMM 2012 Service Templates?

Trying to learn SCVMM 2012, but I'm confused about how Guest OS and Hardware Profiles work with the new 2012 Service Templates.
I create a Hardware Profile and a Guest OS Profile. Then I open the Create VM Template wizard. In this wizard I can assign the Hardware and Guest OS profiles I created under the Configure Hardware and Configure Operating System steps in the wizard.
If I open the new Service Template wizard, select a Single Tier Server (for example), open the Service Template Designer and go to the properties of the server I find under Hardware Configuration and OS Configuration I cannot assign my Hardware and Guest OS
    profiles to the server.
Why is this? It seems like extra work to have not be able to assign these profiles to servers in a service template. Is there something fundamental I'm missing here?

I have the same issues with the equipment I maintain. Two things are consistent that I see between this forum and my set up. I had 10.5 on all our Macs and each of them could connect with out issue to the shares on a windows xp machine. I have three Mac computers I am working with. 1. My main computer a MacBook Pro 2.4ghz core 2 duo, an Intel iMac, and an older Mac Pro G5 running OS 10.5 server.
I have another server running kiosk or signage displays that is a windows xp machine. All of my macs could access the windows xp machine by clicking on it and authenticating to it and then the shares will show up.
I upgraded my MacBook Pro first to 10.6 and have been unable to connect to the windows shares ever since. Keep getting Authenticatoin failure. So my work around is to transfer files to the 10.5 macs and then screen share one of them and access the windows share from them. Spoke with Apple support and they could not help and said it was a know issue but did not have a solution.
Last week I upgraded the iMac to 10.6 and it too, now will not authenticate to the windows shares.
Here are the strange things... I can take my macbook pro home and access all windows shares on my home networked computers. I even took the windows xp machine home from work to test it and I was able to connect to the shares without issue from my Macbook pro.
Two things stand out ... you mentioned a Cisco router and we use a Cisco router at work. Also, both of us have upgraded to 10.6 and authentication fails at that time.
Problem is between OS 10.6 and the Cisco routers I believe. I am not sure how to fix the issue though.

  • 2012 Guest Clustered SQL instance - Upgrade platform

Currently I have several working 2012 Guest clusters for various functions.  I'm now looking at upgrading my "SQL Guest Cluster" which has 2 nodes (VMs) at Server 2012, 2 SQL 2012 instances, and is connected to shared storage through Virtual
    Fiber Channel.
I know I can't have mixed OS levels in a Failover Cluster, which is what is making this difficult.
What would be the best method for upgrading the 2 nodes to Server 2012 r2 (ie no-minimum downtime)?
For a file share guest cluster I was able to evict a node, remove failover role, upgrade node, create new cluster ("name_r2_cluster"), migrate File Server Role to new cluster using cluster tool...however SQL is not supported for the copy function.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Required permissions for SCVMM 2012 R2 Library Share - SOFS on Clustered Storage Volume

    Setup / Notes:
    SCVMM 2012 R2
SCVMM Library Server - SOFS Role on 2 Nodes of Clustered Storage Server 2012 R2
Library Server and Nodes show up under Fabric->Infrastructure->Library Servers
Server and Nodes show no errors or problems
Shares have been added in SCVMM and able to refresh properly
    Problem:
I cannot do any job which involves writing to these shares. Import Resource, Create VM Template, etc. Everything fails with Error (2910) VMM does not have appropriate permissions... Access Denied.
    Solutions Tried:
I have setup FULL CONTROL Share and Security permissions for Administrators Domain and Local, SCVMM Service Account, SCVMM Run as Account, Everyone Account, SYSTEM, Hyper-V Computer Accounts basically everything in my domain. I still get access denied to
    the Library Server Shares.
    Other Notes:
I do have shares configured for VM / shared storage for hosts. These are working great and appear to be configured completely by SCVMM.
What are the required permissions? Are they manually setup or controlled by SCVMM? Why does it appear that nobody has had this problem before me on the interwebs? Am I an idiot?

    More Information:
It would appear that Failover Cluster Manager doesn't immediately change the permissions related to a share. I have manually gone in and set the FULL CONTROL Share and Security permissions for the Everyone Account on the Cluster Volume and the share is now
working. I do need to lock this down for security purposes so what account/accounts does it need?
    Scratch That:
I was able to Import a Physical resource but the saving of a VM to the library does not work... 2904 or 2910.
    Anybody?

  • SCVMM 2012 R2 managing Scale Out Fileserver: Creates only MBR style disks limited at 2 TB?!

I'm new to managing scale out fileservers with SCVMM and so far have been unable to create a share within SCVMM on a scale out fileserver with a volume which is larger than 2 TB... It looks like SCVMM creates a virtual disk on my storage spaces pool (which
was also created by SCVMM) of lets say 10 TB but the volume it creates within this virtual disk is only 2 TB in size. I cannot extended it because the partition style is MBR. This leaves me wondering why would SCVMM create a 10 TB disk with a MBR partition?!
Am I doing something wrong here or is this a bug?
If I manually create everything in Windows Server Manager then i have control over the partition type and hence can create a volume of 10 TB... But I Need SCVMM to manage this.

I just learned from someone a Microsoft that this is a bug in SMAPI. A bug will be filed and then fixed.

  • Installing SCVMM 2012 r2 in a VM on Hyper-V 2012 and windows failover cluseter

    Hi,
I am planning to configure scvmm 2012 r2 that will be managing 30 hyper-v host servers, please guide me will it be ok if i install and configure both scvmm 2012 r2 and sql server 2012 on same VM running on Hyper-V Failover Cluster ?
    Regards,
    Afzal
    [email protected]

    Hi,
Like most of the time, there is a lot of possible topology to achieve your design.
Installing VMM and the database in a virtual machine on the same cluster that it manage is a supported scenario.
The first question you have to ask is : What is the availability level i need for my VMM infrastructure ?If
you shutdown the SCVMM instance for patching, you are not able to deploy new VM from template, and not able to create and manage Virtual Networks. It don't affect existing VM or Virtual Networks. Does this break your SLA ?
Most of the time, VMM don't need a guest cluster (unless you are a hosting provider with provisionning portal
    available 24/24 7/7).
The main advice i will give you is :
Keep it simple as possible !
Don't build complex infrastructure if you don't need to achieve a very hight level of availability.
Availability, complexity and management cost have a exponential relation.
For large deployment, you can use a dedicated Hyper-V cluster to deploy System Center and infrastructures services (SCVMM, SCOM etc...) But there is nothing wrong in deploying VMM in the same cluster as the VM it manage. The design you have to achieve should
be thinking in terms of availability and serviceability.
I don't think that 30 Hyper-V hosts need a dedicated SQL Guest Cluster.
If you install VMM on one VM and SQL on another, you will not achieve more performances, but your VMM instance
    will be less "portable".
    Cheer.
    Cedric.

  • Deploy VMs with SCVMM 2012 R2 with Internet connection

    Hello everyone,
I am trying to use SCVMM 2012 R2 to create a network that will eventually hold 2 clouds, but for the moment I can't seem to create the network and connect the VMs to the Internet.
My lab is this (all hosts are in a LAN, 192.168.0.0/24, gateway 192.168.0.1, and ONLY ONE NIC per HOST ):
1 host DC, DNS, SQL, SCVMM 2012 R2 (IP 192.168.0.8)
    2 hosts with Hyper-V (IP 192.168.0.9 and 192.168.0.10)
I'm also planning to create some "virtual" networks for clustering and live migration, which will use the same physical NICs as the management network (since I have only one physical NIC per host).
Could you please give me a quick guide of how to set this up with SCVMM 2012 R2, so that I can take advantage of the new features (network virtualization, logical networks, logical switch) and for the VMs to be able to reach the Internet?!
    Thank you so much.

    Thanks for the reply.
My network architecture is exactly like the one described on your paper, with 2 differences:
    1. I only have one host in the Production group and one host in the Gateway group
    2. The first host has one physical NIC, the second host has 2 NICs, one internal and one with an Internet (routable) IP
After applying the logical switches on the hosts, I lost Internet connectivity on the gateway host (I have no idea why there is no logical Gateway Switch !!!). VMM completed the jobs with no error.
    Any thoughts?

  • Deleting VM with snapshot/checkpoint is extremely slow in SCVMM 2012 R2

It appears deleting VM with checkpoint from SCVMM 2012 R2 is extremely slow.
    There is the configuration:
one SCVMM 2012 R2 running on Windows Server 2012 R2
one Windows Server 2012 R2 as file share server (SMB), stores all VM files. The share is managed by SCVMM . uses local SSD disk. two gigabit ethernet ports connected to a switch.
two hyper-v hosts running Windows Server 2012 R2, non-clustered, managed by SCVMM, each hosts has three gigabit Ethernet ports connected to the switch.
Everthing works including live migration. Here is the problem:
When I deleted a VM with checkpoint, it appeared that SCVMM/Hyper-V merges something, it took a lot of time on reading each AVHDX and write to VHDX, this results two problems:
    1. It took a lot of time and bandwidth. I am about to delete the VM (and all its files). Why SCVMM/Hyper-V wants to merge all files? The deletion took 29 minutes for a 36GB VM.  This VM is just plain standalone VM, no usage of template.
The expected result is to just delete all VM files and remove VM, don't do merge. (BTW: VMWare doesn't do merge, the deletion is done in a few seconds))
    2. although all data file are on the file share, the hyper-v host still reads each file from file share, then write to another file on the same file share. It consumes significant network bandwidth. Can they offload the work to file server?
The expected result is that Hyper-V offload the transfer to file share server. It should not create huge amount of network io.
    3. The merging operation is incredibility slow. around 24MByte/sec data being copied.
The hyper-v has 2xgigabit links, benchmark shows the file share access can easily go 200Mbytes/sec, and the file server side is SSD drive with 200+MByte/sec bandwidth. The expected result is if hyper-v ever merge, the speed is least 100MByte/s and hopefully
go up to 200MByte/sec.  21MB/s is just painfully slow.
    Did I miss anything?

Thanks for the info. Even there may be use cases where merge is necessary, there are plenty of use cases where merging is overkill -- can Hyper-V have a CLI option that deletes VM without doing merging?
If such option won't be available soon, can SCVMM do this on deleting a VM:
    1. revert to the latest checkpoint, delete the checkpoint
    2. repeat the step 1 until all checkpoint removed.
    3. delete the VM.
This workaround avoids the Hyper-V's merging. It is not as clean as VMWare's (they just delete the VM files, no extra merge), but at least it is much faster and less resource consumption than merging.

  • Unattend.xml parsing/merging issue with SCVMM 2012 R2

    Hi all
I have a problem with a new install of SCVMM 2012 R2. I have created templates for 2008 R2, 2012 and 2012 R2. I have an issue with the unattend.xml losing some of its configuration when the 2012 and 2012 R2 templates are built, this issue however doesn't
    occur on a 2008 R2 template build.
I have generated unattend.xml files for all 3 OS's using System Image Manager in the latest AIK using the original install.wim from each OS media.
In the unattend.xml file I have specified language settings, and a few other bits but the issue I have is when I configure autologon with local admin and password. I specify a logon count of 1, I also specify a GUIRunOnce command in SCVMM and not the answerfile.
The problem is the resulting merged unattend.xml has a logon count of 999 and no GUIRunOnce command. I have tried different variations where I specify GUIRunOnce in the xml and not SCVMM, applying the autologon to the Template or Guest OS profile and
all end with the resulting xml with logon count of 999 and no GUIRunOnce. If I remove the autologon part then GUIRunOnce gets parsed and works correctly.
As mentioned this only happens with Server 2012 and 2012 R2, 2008 R2 works correctly.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Kevin
I am struggling with the same thing during bare metal installs of Hyper-V hosts. In my case I have managed to narrow it down to the language settings in the oobe pass. If I include them, parsing of the unattend file halts (without an explicit error anywhere)
and the host fails to join the domain. Could you try to leave out the language settings in oobe pass and see if it then completes as expected? Would be interesting to see if it actually is the same issue with a slightly different flavour :)
EDIT: Got a bit further now with the new release of WS2012 R2. All the testing I've done has been with the 05182 build. Stumbled across KB2913316 which stated that a new build (31419) was released december 11th. Allthough the KB does not directly apply to our
issue I thought I'd give it a go, so I went about building a new vhdx-image. Low and behold - the first test went smoothly applying all the settings in the unattend file! I'm going to continue testing to make sure the successful run wasn't just a fluke.

  • Modifying the size of an SMB 3.0 registered file share in SCVMM 2012 SP1

    Hi -
We are leveraging the Netapp SMI-S 5.0 provider with SCVMM 2012 SP1 to register and use SMB 3.0 file shares on our HV clusters.  Working great after a few early problems.  One thing that we've yet to find is a solution to this problem.
On the netapp side, let's say a volume with size 1TB is created.  Then through SCVMM/SMI-S, a new file share is created within this volume for use with HV clusters/VMs.  Let's say, for example when creating this share through the SCVMM GUI that
you define the file share size as 500gb.  This leaves 500gb free in the parent volume.
How in the world do you modify that file share size from the SCVMM perspective - if you start running low on space within the share.  The free space is definitely there, but we can't seem to find a way from within SCVMM to modify the file share 'size'
(which is a parameter you have to define during file share creation) from original size to something larger (yet still smaller than parent volume size).
Anyone else seen this scenario and/or found a solution?  I apologize if this is already answered elsewhere - just not seeing much on searches.  Thanks in advance -

Ok so we just ran into a similar issue with our netapp. And after digging around my colleagues and I found this document ( https://communities.netapp.com/community/netapp-blogs/msenviro/blog/2014/02/19/data-ontap-smi-s-agent-51--use-netapp-smi-s-provider-to-provision-a-cifs-share-for-smb-30-environments-windows-server-2012-using-scvmm-2012-r2
) had a key passage: "SMIS create/manage shares created on qtree with quota assigned to it."
So taking that the SMI-S agent uses quotas on the volume to determine the 'file share' size you can adjust the space available to Hyper-V by adjusting the quota on the volume, even increasing it to beyond the space available in the volume. We are actually
doing this because of dedupe savings on our hyper-v store.
IMPORTANT - the SMI-S agent only scans every 5 minutes, so when you make a quota change it may take up to 5 minutes for it to be detected... so wait
6 minutes and then refresh the storage provider.  We were working with SCVMM 2012 R2 but this should be reflected with SCVMM 2012 SP1 if im not mistaken.
