Creating large documents in InDesign... is there a limit?

Hi,
I am creating a 1000 page document in InDesign through plug-in. The pages contians simple text objects and a logo, no high-quality graphics etc. But on reaching above 700 pages the application crashes (debug version). The memory for InDesign touches about 1.4gb of usage (out of 2gb total memory). Is it usual?or something wrong with the plug-in.
What should I do to create documents with 1000, 2000 number of pages through indesign, is there a limit? is there an option that I can use to cache pages on disk, so that it doesn't reach out of memory?
Regards,
MS

I'm working on a Document with 1400 and still everything works. It depends how you creating your document. It also depends on a memory management in your plugin. Maybe using books can solve tour problem.

  • Is it advisable to create a document in Indesign, export to PDF, then export to Word?

I've been asked to create several documents in Word format because the people who would be using them won't have access to InDesign or Acrobat Pro to edit and change them as needed.
Since Word is so quirky IMO and I don't know it as well as InDesign, I'd like to avoid creating the documents directly in it if at all possible.
My concern is that translating from ID to PDF, and then again to Word might create some strange anomalies in the resulting document, like maybe incorrect dingbat characters or maybe even non-printing characters, or items falling into Word's header or footer no-man's land incorrectly. I wonder if it might end up being just as time consuming?
Has anyone else tried this workflow? And did you have problems with it, or did it work well enough to justify doing it that way?
    Thanks.

I agree with Peter. Depending on the nature of the document(s), your proposed InDesign > PDF > Word workflow could indeed cost you time rather than save it. A word processor just doesn't support the same levels of typographical detail that InDesign does, and Microsoft apps don't handle even features that appear common the same way that Adobe apps do, so by not working in the native Word environment, you're complicating the results; not simplifying the task. Word will feel just as quirky after you convert, and getting it all right will amount to rework, whereas you could have just done it once.

  • Cannot split a large document. InDesign CS5

Hello. I am trying to split a large document (180 pages-a book actually) into smaller documents (chapters). I tried doing it according to this thread http://forums.adobe.com/message/1321374#1321374, but when I choose the pages I want to delete, the text automatically reflows and I end up having deleted pages that I want to keep. I disabled “automatic text flow” or something, but it didn’t help. Why does that happen? Because the text frames are threaded? And what should I do? Unthread them? And how can I massively unthread them if that is the solution? Thanx a lot.

I think I got it thanks to this thread http://forums.adobe.com/message/3014839 (
I'm really late to this thread,  but you can do this manually pretty easily, too, if you want to isolate  each chapter into a new thread (though telling the chapter title style  to start on the next odd page is probably easier). Click the outport on  the last frame you want in the first thread, then click inside the frame  to break the thread. The rest of the story will be overset and the  following frames will be empty, but threaded.
Put the cursor after  the last character in the last frame and press Shift +Ctrl+End to select everything from there to the end of the story. Cut and paste into the  empty frames. Repeat for the next chapter.
Thinking about it, this might actually be all that the split story script is doing.)

  • Large document causes InDesign to hang - Save as IDML etc. not possible

I recently had what I can only call an InDesign nightmare. An important 150 page document I had been working on for months suddenly turned “self-destructive”. I could still open this document and even create PDFs from it, but almost every other action (for example, opening the find dialog or the spell checker) would result in InDesign not responding anymore. Upon restart, the document would be recovered - only to choke InDesign again whenever I tried editing it.
I tried saving my work using the tricks that are often suggested in this situation: “Package”, “Save as” or “Save a copy” (in IDML format) to create a clean copy of the document without any digital cruft. Unfortunately, all of these commands would result in InDesign crashing or hanging as well.
At this point, I tried to copy all (threaded) text from the document to a text-only document in BBEdit, a popular text/code editor. But even a simple “Copy” command would crash InDesign. An when I managed to copy a section of text from the InDesign document to BBEdit without InDesign going down immediately, BBEdit would hang, too - something that almost never happens; this is an incredibly robust editor.
As a last resort, I created an empty InDesign document and moved chunks of content from the defect document there piece by piece. Whenever InDesign crashed, I realized I had come closer to the “land mine” in that doc.
After several hours, it came down to one paragraph of text that could neither be edited or copied without InDesign hanging, so I simply rewrote that. Switching on invisible characters showed nothing except letters and spaces for this paragraph.
So now I have saved my formatted content, but lost all master pages and other settings. And of course, I still don't know what happened in the first place...
Has anyone ever experienced something similar? Is there another way out of this situation (where even exporting to IDML or using “Save as” isn't possible anymore)?
It is only this one document that caused trouble, so I doubt trashing Preferences would help.
    Thanks!

I have seen something similar, and in that case I was able to isolate the problem in pretty much the same way you were. I also found exporting the text to InDesign Tagged Text , placing that into a new file, copying to the clipboard, and pasting to replace the bad text.

  • Creating a .swf in InDesign, is there anyway to export it into a more compatible format?

I am not sure if the above question is actually what I am asking.  I created a training module using a ton of these .swf files in InDesign.  The .swf files don't line up with the timeline so they can't be paused, fast forwarded or controlled in anyway.  The course was created in Articulate Storyline, their solution is to import it as a video and not flash. When I do that it becomes a static image.  I have the cloud,  I attempted to pull it into After Effects and then export it, but it again, I cannot import it.. (I am still in the beginning stages of learning that program.)  I've installed Flash Pro and attempted the same.
Is there anyway I can make these files into a compatible format, say mpg-4?
    Thanks!
    Monica

I wrote that wrong. I create all of my images, backgrounds, designs, and animations in InDesign. From InDesign, I export the images as jpgs and the animations as .swfs.  From there, I import the .swfs into storyline as a flash object, and it plays normally; however, in the player within storyline, while viewing the course, when the slide is paused the .swf keeps going.. If it's fast forwarded, the .swf starts from the beginning.  My goal is to have it work with the player controls, pause with the slide, and continue where it left off - all of that.
The only way to do so, which I found in the storyline forum, is to import it as a video.
So the animations I created in Indesign, exported to a .swfs, I attempted to pull into After Effects and then export them; however, it doesn't actually play or seem to exist in after effects - or in Flash Pro, even Premiere.
    Sorry if this confusing.
    Thanks a lot!!

  • How do I create a pdf in Indesign with 40 file hyperlinks so it can be used on different computers?

I am creating a document in Indesign CS4 that is to be exported as a pdf.
Within this one page document, there are approximately 40 listed products, one after the other and each product has been set up to hyperlink to a specific pdf in the same directory.
    This has been no problem.
Where the problem is, is that it won't work on other computers because it seems to 'hardwire' the hyperlink file address.
I then went in and set up the hyperlink as a URL.  This worked on any computer, but then the pdf opens in an internet browser.
I NEED THE LINKED PDF TO OPEN IN ADOBE READER.
I then opened the one page pdf in Adobe Acrobat Pro.  It brought over no hyperlinks.  So I created the hyperlinks there.  No probs.  It worked.  But if I want to update this one page doc in the future, I'm going to have to create all links again.  I have other docs that I need to create that have hundreds of links.
Can anyone shed some light on this?  It shouldn't be difficult.  Why won't a linked file just work on any computer?
Your help will be greatly appreciate.
    Josh

    Josh,
Got your email with added question related to this user to user forum post. As others might have the same question, answering it here.
If you want to point to PDFs that are in a subfolder of the root-directory that holds the pdf containing all the links, you'd need to add the subfolder to the path-specification for the link..
    For example:
root-folder has 'source.pdf' that has a link going to 'desitnation.pdf'
    a 'subfolder' contains 'desitnation.pdf'
    Link path would be '/subfolder/destination.pdf'
    Cheers,

Can I type a large document on my iPad2 or only small amounts of text using Notes?

You can create larger documents e.g. Documents To Go (http://itunes.apple.com/ie/app/documents-to-go-office-suite/id317117961?mt=8) allows you to create/read/update word and excel documents, as well as supporting other document types. There is also a 'premium' version of the app : http://itunes.apple.com/ie/app/documents-to-go-premium-office/id317107309?mt=8 .

  • How to convert a large document into a InDesign Book w/Chapters?

    Hello!
I just started a position with a company that has a number of catalogs full of the widgets they sell. Previously the catalog work was outsourced to a company that uses Quark, and the first thing I did when I started was to convert them to InDesign using a 3rd party plugin.
The one I'm working on now is 400+ pages, including a TOC and 2 indexes (words / item nos.), and is currently 4 VERY large files that take 5-10 minutes each to open.
What I'd like to do is split the entire catalog along logical lines into a bunch of 10-50 page documents, then stitch them all back together as Chapters in a Book file. The plan is to have the smaller documents be usable either as stand-alone brochures or as pieces of the big catalog. Once I can get it all organized the way I want, I'll be redoing the TOC and indexes as well.
So, to boil it down to a few questions:
    1. How do I split a large document into smaller pieces?
    2. I have a basic understanding of creating a Book file, but are there any pitfalls I should watch out for when stitching the bits back together?
    3. Is it possible to have page numbering automated so that if I open a chapter on its own the pages will be, say, 1-20; but if I open it in the context of the book file the pages will be, say, 84-104?
    4. Are the page numbering, TOC, and indexing tools flexible enough to where if I modify a section such that it adds or removes pages in that section, the entire book file will restructure to accommodate?
A thousand thanks in advance to all who read this, and to any who respond!

Saving x-number of copies as new names, then chop off the unwanted parts is pretty efficient.
    2. I have a basic understanding of creating a Book file, but are there any pitfalls I should watch out for when stitching the bits back together?
Nothing specific, other than learning the ins and outs of working with book files. For example, if you change a style in one file, you'd want to use the Synchronize feature to propagate the change to the other files, but you'd also need to remember if any change in one file shouldn't be propagated to others, and deselect it in the Synchronize dialog box.
It's a good idea to open all and save all book files before doing any book-wide operation; even better to save the whole directory for safety. Working on open  files gives you some undo powers that working with closed files doesn't.
    3. Is it possible to have page numbering automated so that if I open a chapter on its own the pages will be, say, 1-20; but if I open it in the context of the book file the pages will be, say, 84-104?
The individual files need to be checked and perhaps updated or have their numbering restarted when they're removed from the book file's control. It depends on how you've set up the numbering.
    4. Are the page numbering, TOC, and indexing tools flexible enough to where if I modify a section such that it adds or removes pages in that section, the entire book file will restructure to accommodate?

Both TOC and Index have check boxes to include all files in the current book. You need to update the TOC, and generate the index again with Replace Existing Index checked, after making changes.

  • Creating large scale secure document repository for remote access and a few other Azure questions

    Hello Microsoft Community,
Is there a way to put a bunch of documents in Azure storage and present them to an end user via an interface that is either web based or local that will provide security (log in control) to the folders and logging along with allowing access from multiple
sites? I have a large document library of medical records that have been scanned to PDF format that are historical. They moved EMR systems to a new system and the documents I'm talking about are historical access only in case a patient needs historical records
and aren't in the new system. Records staff would need to be able to log into said site, gain access to the files, search by file name and print / copy / save the PDF document so it can be sent to the patient requesting the info.

Shared access signature and stored access policy can be used in this case.
A shared access signature is a URI that grants restricted access rights to containers, blobs, queues, and tables for a specific time interval. By providing
a client with a shared access signature, you can enable them to access resources in your storage account without sharing your account key with them. A stored access policy provides an additional level of control over shared access signatures on the server
    side.
For more details, please refer the following links:

Your file may be larger than the maximum dimensions for a PDF (not sure what they are, currently). Try working at half-size in ID and see if it makes a difference.

  • Is there a way to find/change the font of numericals only, within a document in indesign?

Is there a way to find/change the font of numericals only, within a document in indesign?

It might not be what you need for this document, but if you were creating it from scratch, a GREP style would probably be the way to go. That way,  new figures added to the text will  automatically be styled the way you like.
Start with a base Paragraph Style (i.e. 'Body') that all subsequent styles ('Heading' etc) are based on. Select a figure, and apply the font and any other attributes required. Select it and make a new Character Style. In your Paragraph Style, go to GREP Styles, and set it to apply the Character Style to the 'Any Digit' Wildcard.

  • Creating large pdf document

Help, I have created a magazine for a local club which is in excess of 100mb and it won't upload to a PDF document, can you please help?

    Hi wendyclewley,
There is a 100 MB file size limitation for submitting files to the Create PDF service.
But with Acrobat you can create large files.
You can use free trial service of 30 days.
If it meets your expectation then you can purchase the full version.
