Creating links to specific area in a PDF

I want to create a link to go to a specific text area in my one-page PDF... not allowing anything outside of this specified area to be filled unless you click on this link. Does anyone know how to do this?

Creating a link to a specific area is very easy. Make a button and set its action to "Go to page view", then go to the area (you can even set the zoom level you want) and set the link.
Preventing the user from leaving that area is not possible.

  • How to add link to specific page in another PDF

I'd like to create a link within a PDF to a specific page in a different PDF. As far as I can tell, the Create Link tool will only allow me to open another PDF on page 1. I know you can link to another page in the current PDF, but I need to link to a separate PDF. I have also found info on mechanisms for opening to different pages, but these are for opening using browsers or code.
So, is it possible to link create a link in a PDF to a specific page in another PDF?
    Thanks for any suggestions.
    - John
    PS - I'm using Adobe 7.0 Professional.

    Try this...
You can link to a specific page in a specific PDF from a bookmark. You navigate to the new view (page of a PDF) when creating the bookmark.
When you want to do that with a link (as in selected text in the body of the PDF) you have to do it in two steps. Use any file open to create the link, then edit the properties of the link, select the Action tab, and change the action to Go To A Page View.
That's how it works in Acrobat 8, but I'm betting it's the same in 7.

  • InDesign Link to specific page in a .pdf file

I have an article index that I keep in InDesign.  Each item in the index points to a specific page in a separate .pdf file.  Is there a way, in InDesign, to create a link that will open the .pdf file to a specific page?  The InDesign file contains buttons and is exported to an interactive .pdf file.  For example, I may have an article from volume one, page two.  In the interactive index, I would like the user to be able to click on this link and open newsletter volume one and jump to page two.  I have never found a way to do this in InDesign and currently have to create the text portion of the index in InDesign, export it to an interactive .pdf file and then create all of the links directly in Acrobat Professional.  This is very time consuming because whenever I need to update the index, I need to re-export to a new interactive .pdf file and recreate ALL of the links in Acrobat.  There should be a way to do this in InDesign.

There SHOULD be a way, yes. But there is none. It's not about Indesign, it's the PDF and handling of action like "Open file".
I tried button actions like "Open file" in Indesign, but you only select the file name and path, nothing else.
If you do the same in Acrobat, by putting an action "Open file" for a hyperlink, it will be the same.
The only thing that works is to use an URL like http://www.yourdomain.com/yourfile.pdf#page=3, where #page=3 can do what you want. You could even place that URL in Indesign or Acrobat, but the PDF would a) open in a browser and b) the PDF reader will always pop up that requester before opening internet links and c) the file would have to be on the internet.
Perhaps Acrobat Javascript could do more here, but then you'd have to embed it somehow in Acrobat (I wouldn't know if Indesign can do that) and Javascript would have to be allowed for that PDF. Not a good choice.

  • Linking to Specific Page in Attached PDF File

I'm working with a main PDF file as well as an attached one. I'd like to create multiple links in my main file, with each one linking to a different page in the attached file. How could I go about doing this?

You can only do this if the attachment is a PDF file. Here are the help instructions that explain how to create a link in the main PDF document that jumps to the PDF attachment.

  • Linking to specific text

    Hi All!
I would like to link to specific text within a PDF document.
I can link to pages, but I can't link to specific text within a page.  Is there any way to do this?
    I'm on Mac OS 10.5.8 using Acrobat 9.4.0 ...
    Thank you so much!!
    Diane

    Hi!
    Thank you again!
I know I can link to a page but that's not what I need.
I need to be able to link to specific text on a page.
See, if the text I need to link to is in the middle of the page then it kind of creates a problem because the link doesn't go directly to that text, instead it goes to the top of the page that the text appears in.
That's not what I want it to do.
I want the text that I link to, to be what shows at the top of the window, rather than the beginning of the page that the text appears on.
Thank you for trying!  I'm thinking Acrobat probably can't do what it is I want to do.
Have a good day and week!

  • Linking to pages or destinations within PDFs not consistent on different computers

    Hi,
I'm building a web page and want to link to specific pages on a pdf.  On some people's computers, it works, no problem.  On others, it doesn't.  Has anyone run into a problem like this?  The problem doesn't seem to be specific to what version of acrobat the user has.  All users are windows based.  Any ideas?  Thanks!

That does sound like a bit of an odd issue, but I may have an explanation:
As I recall (and Wikipedia confirms), Microsoft completely re-wrote the network stack for Windows Vista.  The changes implemented here could explain the better performance that you are experiencing on your Vista machine vs. your XP machine.  Some of the changes include:
A native implementation of IPv6 (your UML290 uses IPv6 to communicate)
    A complete overhaul of IPv4

  • Creating links within a photo gallery

I created a few albums and I want to know how to create links for specific photos. For example, I would like to link from one of the photos in gallery view to a larger version of that photo. I created another page with the larger photo but I cant create a "click here" link within the description. The inspector allows me to chose create hypertext link after highlighting text but it doesnt work. Also, if I create a link outside of the description the link appears on every page in that gallery. I also noticed that the link I created on the main gallery page appears on every page. Further, I would like the link to open in a new window.
    Thanks for the help.

After I published the site the link I created in the photo description works in the album view but not when you're viewing the photo itself.
    Any suggestions?

  • How to create a table of contents (TOC) linking to specific pages of different (multiple) PDFs

    Hi All,
I would like to create clickable Table of Contents (TOC) that can lead to a sub clickable TOC that would lead to a specific page of different PDFs within a folder.
    Is that possible?
Secondly, is is possible to create a search box that upon typing a specific word (not related to text within the PDFs), that word to be linked to a specific page of a particular PDF out of many within a folder?
To make it more clear, I have a database of specifications of equipment and drawings of a building, all in multiple PDF files. I would like to be able to unify all those PDFs and if I type the room number of the building to be presented with a menu of choces pointing to services assosiated with that room, being elctrical power drawings, lighting drawings or drawings of Air Conditioning and Ducting associated with that room. So I type a room number, then I get a menu of Power, Lights, Fire Alarm, or Ducting all associated with that room, then if I click Fire Alarm to be directed straight to the drawing within a PDF related to that room.
    Thanks

I would say: Try and Error. Create a copy of your document and unmark in the copied document in the document inspector all boxes for the TOC. Then mark them again. Maybe you should also delete the paragraph styles and mark them again. If that doesn't work, try to copy the complete text of your document to a new created one. Maybe that works.
    Good luck!
P.S.: If that doesn't work look here. Maybe this helps.

  • Creating a link to a Multibyte file with PDF 1.4

I am trying to create a link to a file that contains multibyte characters (specifically Japanese) - unfortunately, I need to conform to the PDF 1.4 standard (I can make things work fine using PDF 1.7 and /UF).
The 1.7 standard says that as of PDF 1.2, a file specification can contain multibyte character codes if you represent them in hexadecimal format. I cannot get this to work, and wonder if someone has any insight into why this might be.
My multibyte file spec is UTF-8 encoded, and this is how I write it (in hex) to the document (without thr UTF-8 BOM). When I later click on that link, I get an error that the specified document does not exist - the part of the filespec that is English characters are displayed correctly, but the Japanese characters show up incorrectly.
Does Acrobat expect these characters to be UTF-8 encoded, or otherwise? I've tried prepended the UTF-8 BOM, but that didn't make a difference. Do I need to UTF-16BE encode them (like with /UF)?
Additional info: I've tried using Acrobat 5 to create a new PDF and inserted a link to a file whose name contains Japanese characters - when clicking on the link in this, I also get the 'file does not exist' error. Also, looking in the PDF, the filespec is NOT hex encoded, and the Japanese characters have been replaced by ???.

Hmm... so, what does it mean when the 1.7 spec says 'In PDF 1.2 or higher, a file specification may contain multiple-byte character
codes, represented in hexadecimal form between angle brackets (< and >).'? If Acrobat 5 supports PDF 1.4, I would have thought this would mean that Acrobat 5 would support multibyte character codes...
I would guess that this puts the final nail in the coffin of creating links to filenames with non Roman characters from Acrobat 5.
Just so I can report this upwards, I see that you are an Adobe employee - are you a support person?

  • Having trouble with links to specific destinations in pdfs

I'm trying to create links from a web page to specific locations (destinations) in a pdf. I make the destinations in Acrobat, then I create the links in the web page (for example, userguide.pdf#intro), and they work perfectly in IE and Opera but not in Firefox. When I try these links in Firefox, it links to the pdf, but to the wrong place (usually the top of the pdf, but sometimes other places too). This has happened on two different computers, too.
Someone has recently suggested that it may not be a Firefox problem after all, but a Reader problem--specifically, a problem with the Reader plug-in we have on Firefox. Does anyone have any insight on this?

    Hi,
That usually means that either the Domain name or the Folder is incorrectly specified. Please see https://helpx.adobe.com/muse/using/uploading-site-third-party-hosting.html for an explanation of these fields.
What values are you entering in these fields? Did Upload to FTP host work for you in previous versions of Muse? Are you using the same settings as before?

  • Link to a specific page in a PDF - from word

    Hey guys
Possibly a stupid question, however Im not too familiar with acrobat and creating pdfs etc, I have searched and tried whatever answers i've found though.
What Im needing to do (well, its another user, but they've asked me to fix it for them) is create a link in a word document that will open a pdf at a particular page. This word document will then be exported to PDF and the linking needs to still work. The files will be on the local filesystem (not a web server) and need to open in acrobat reader, not an IE window.
I can get it to work fine if you manually edit the link in Acrobat professional and tell it to go to a page in another PDF, but when I try adding the link in word it just opens the PDF at page 1.
    What I've tried doing:
Create a hyperlink in word to c:\test.pdf#page=50
Create a hyperlink in word to c:\test.pdf#chapter6 (with chapter6 being a destination in the PDF document)
as above but with file:///c:/test.pdf#page50 and file:///c:/test.pdf#chapter6
All of these open the PDF but at page 1, not page 50. When i view the link properties in acrobat it shows the action as being "Open a file: c:\test.pdf" but nothing about opening to a specific page.
The user does not want to edit the resulting pdf in acrobat once it has been created, due to needing to frequently update the word document and re-export to pdf.
Systems are running WinXP, Office 03, and have tried with Acrobat 6 and 8 (would prefer it to work with version 6, as 8 is just the trial and would prefer not to have to upgrade to get this to work).
Any help would be much appreciated!

I have a similar problem I would like to solve. I am also running Word 2003, Windows XP and Acrobat Professional 7.0.
I can create a hyperlink in a word document to open a separate PDF file.
I can then use PDF Maker to convert the word document to PDF.
    No problem.
When I click on the new link in the PDF document it opens the separate file in the same window and the original PDF file is closed.
I do not want the original file to close.
When I set up a new link from within Acrobat then I get the option to "Open in new window". This link works the way that I want.
As there are multiple hyperlinks in the word document, I will need to recreate new links everytime I modify the Word document. This is very time consuming
Question - how do I get the automatically created link to open in a new window?
    Thanks in advance

  • Linking to specific page in pdf document

I'm trying to link to a specific page within a pdf document
    using the following syntax:
    https://uhaul.net/publications/publication.ashx?FileName=MB197.pdf#page=3
However, the pdf opens to the first page, instead of to page
3 (which is what I want). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Linking to specific pages within several other pdfs

My source pdf has ~700 references and I need to create a link to each reference (target pdfs).  There are hundreds of target pdfs and the source document references different pages within each of the target pdfs.  The target pdfs need to contain the entire document and not just the cited pages.  What I am doing is creating a link and selecting opening a file.  What I am not able to do, is assign a page number to this link so that a certain page will appear instead of page 1.  I understand that you can set the initial view with file properties, but that will not work as I would then have to create a pdf for each link and there are far too many references to do that.  Here is a sample "Reference at pp. 2, 4, 6." and in this sample I want a separate link for each reference that will go to page 2, page 4 and page 6 (again I need the entire document for reading purposes for these links and not these specific pages).

You can download the trial version (http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/acrobat-downloads.html) to convert the PDF back to WORD if you do not have the original. The conversion may not be perfect, but it is typically better than starting from scratch. You may be lucky and get a good result. You might check the settings (in the save screen) to try retain format versus retain text flow. The format version can be a pain to edit since it creates a bunch of text boxes. The flow version may require you to reformat in WORD, but you likely would want to do that anyway.
