Creating magazines for IPad

Hi there.
I am a very small in-house printer/marketer for a single company in Canada with 8 branches. Each of these puts out a newsletter/magazine every second month for its customers. I want to make this magazine available for tablets and am now operating with indesign CS5 (I had CS3 design premium, and so just purchased the indesign, such that I could get access to this feature). I have not upgraded to CS5.5. There were some tutorials on the Adobe website with Andy Zivic, but these required subscribing to Digital Publishing, which I am not prepared to do for such a small readership. I want to host the content for tablets myself and have the servers and such to do so, but how would I do this without doing the whole DPS thing? Can I not just host a .issue format? Shouldn't that be an export function? Maybe it exists, as I'm still getting my feet wet with this version...
Another idea would be to have a separate function, much like the svg export option, that would output an iOS or android app that could then be posted to the app store for either of those platforms.

right well after many hours of frustration I have go it to work but not as I wanted, but still don't get why? I had drop shadow on the text, I took it off and re-created it and it works fine. I then added new shadows back on and works fine. I then placed the text back over the image which has an indesign gradient over it... No longer works?!?!
I then left the text over the gradient and took the drop shadows off, works again?! Why won't it work with shadows?

There is no one here from Apple.
In order for you to develop and distribute content for the iPad, you need to become an apps developer.
Not sure where you sign up for this or who you have to call.
There should be a place on Apple's site that refers to a section of the site if you want to be an Apple iOS content developer.
It cost, I believe $99 U.S. to become an Apple apps developer. You'll agree to Apple's Non-disclosure rules. You'll receive Apple's app/software developers kit,and access to Apple's app developer site.
No one here is going to be able to help you.

Creating Art for Ipad

I am creating my art in illustrator for an ipad size book. I have been using 1024 x 768 for th eartboard. Just recently I went to the drop down menu in illustrator and chose ipad template and it was exactly twice that size. Should I going forward design twice the size of the target size or stick with 1024 x 768. It is simply bold cartoon art. It look great and functioned well in importing into edge at 100% (1024 x 768). Any help would appreciated.

Once you have your vertical or crossed references table already made, you have to right click on it and chance the block name to:
;SC_TA_C_5_L;SC_TA_C_6_L
In this case : ;SC_TA_C means you want to put an arrow trend inside each cell of the table matrix. The above formula tells BI Mobile to put an arrow trend icon on the 5th and the 6th column.
After the column number (beginning with 1) you can put either a _L or _R which tells the app to put the icon either on the left or the right of the value.
What I cannot achieve until now is to put ranges to show green/red icons...
If someone knows how to achieve this, please let us know!

Trying to create presentation for iPad

Hi there,
I hope someone can help me today.
I have InDesign 5.5 and need to produce a presentation that is required to be displayed on an iPad.
I have started to build a document that includes some animations and will also include some slide shows. What I need to know is what do I export the document as in order to view the document. I can't even see the presentation on my macbook pro. I can see it in preview but cannot work out what I need to save / export it as in order to view it.
I have also downloaded and installed the Folio Producer Tools and installed them but still in Indesign when I go to Extensions and Folio I get the box asking me to go to download and install them. I've done this twice now which I guess in itself could be a problem but now cannot find the files to uninstall them.
I would really appreciate some straightforward advice. I don't want to complete this important document for work only to find no-one can view it, on laptops or otherwise.
Please help as I am bashing my head against a brick wall here!

You can publish a web-app with your own server instead of appStore and use it with iPad´s Safari web-browser where you can "install" it to you iPad´s desktop when it looks and feels like real native iOS app. Computer users will usually be able to read it too.
Check for instance:

It´s a landscape version so if you use iPad, rotate it to landscape as well.
If you want to get best appereance, tap arrow button on the left side of your Safari´s address bar and choose Add Home Screen.

How to Cancel 'iTunes' purchased magazine for iPad

how do I cancel a magizine subscription I purchased via iTunes for my iPad. I have been looking and looking to find links but can't. Now I just got hit with an automatic renewl fee. Please help me figure this out. Thanks in advance.

Ok, just realized that I had changed my apple ID since original purchase. so I did log into app store via my old apple id and I did find the 'manage' page to stop auto-renewal, but nothing about deleting subscription/magazine. I also deleted association to my credit card. so if the worse is a 9.99 fee for this, and it can't auto-renew, then good. Still would like to get a refund, and I did send email to apple support. shall lsee how that ends up. still would like to outright cancel/ delete the entire magazine but cant' find that option. I thank you for your assistance.

Creating chapters for iPad video

I understand that chapters can be added to videos using Quicktime Pro. If I do this, will I be able to see the chapters on an iPad? I don't want to pay the upgrade price and find out it doesn't work. Has anyone done this or willing to do a quick test for me?

How to create portfolio for iPad without DPS?

We are mostly interested in putting our portfolio on an iPad that we can show when visiting clients. We'd prefer a standalone ap that can run on an iPad free of a browser. Every where I look it seems we can set it up in InDesign but that we need Digital Publishing Suite to put it in a form of an iPad ap. Is that correct? We don't want to have to login to some server or require others to have an account at acrobat.com... to "share" or show our portfolio, we just want to show it to them when we visit them in person.
We will be recreating our portfolio on the web as well, but when visiting clients, we don't want to be restricted to internet access to show it. Also, viewing through a browser takes up more window space - thus the desire for a standalone ap on the iPad.
How would anyone recommend doing this?

Purchasing magazines for ipad newstand

if a yearly subscription is bought for a magazine in the Newsstand why is there also a monthly charge to download that months issue

There shouldn't be - which magazine is it? How did you buy the subscription - through iTunes or directly from the magazine?
If you purchased a magazine subscription directly from the publisher, then iTunes wouldn't know you've paid that money. The National Geographic mag (which is in newstand) has a sign-in for "print subscribers" so they can download it without purchasing in iTunes.

It is NOT possible to create a Single Edition app for Android. Single Edition apps work only on the iPad.
You can create Single Edition apps using any account—CC, Pro, or Enterprise—and if you cancel your DPS subscription, these Single Edition (or single-folio) apps are still available in the App Store as long as you maintain your iOS account with Apple.
For multi-folio apps, the app container is downloaded from an app store, but the folios are downloaded from the Adobe Distribution Service. If you cancel your DPS subscription, the Adobe Distribution Service basically shuts down for that app. New users can still download your apps from an app store, but the library will be empty. Existing users can still view the folios they've downloaded, but they can't get any updates or new folios.

Hi stuartdj,
I'm not finding a way to highlight text as one can do with iBooks (hold and swipe for black text, background yellow for example).
One option is to actually color the text itself.
Select the text, then in Style tools, tap the Font name at the top which shows the Text Options sheet where there is a Color option. Would changing the font color to Red, Green or Purple accomplish your goals?
If you do want black text on a colored background (highlighted) it would need to be text in a text box where you can change the fill (background) color. Style, Style Options, Fill. But this is not inline text and doesn't flow like just coloring the font itself.
