Creating new keyboard layout

My last Mac model was 7500 (long time ago) with Mac OS 7.x. Since then I used PC with Windows OS, and now I am back to the game again. Mac OS is changed significantly since then, so I have to start from begining.
Now, because Macedonian keyboard has not the same layout as in Win OS I would like to redefine it, or to create a new one. I could do it then (with some tricks that I forgot) but not now. Can anybody help me to do it, please?

you can use Ukelele to create a custom keyboard layout

  • We need new keyboard layout in Korea.

    Hi~
We need new keyboard layout in Korea.
The Google offers new keyboard layout for the Korean language.
It is called 'single vowel keyboard'
It has 4 less keys. So one key size can be wider than that of qwerty keyboard.
It is much easier to type and creates much less mistyping.
I hope apple would offer the same keyboard layout.
    Sincerely,

Here is the image file of new keyboard layout.
    I hope it will help.

  • Hit PrtSc on new keyboard layout and lost clipboard data?

The new keyboard layout place the PrtSc button at the bottom row of the keyboard between left Alt anc Ctrl.
I think some of you might have already tried that, when you try to press the right Ctrl or Alt (for example try to press Ctrl+V... etc) or even just accidentally hit the PrtSc key, and then the text that you copied will be cleared in the clipboard so you need to go back and copy again.
Even worse: You can't recover if you cut and closed the application, then hit PrtSc and let the clipboard to be overwritten!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

There are two ways to deal with the problem: (1) bypass Windows print sceren functionality or (2) install a clipboard manager.
To bypass Windows print sceren functionality you can install a program. An opensource example is Lightscreen. You can configure it to directly save the print screen into your document directory instead of overwriting the clipboard. There is an extra benefit, that you don't need to do print screen, then open Paint, then paste, then save the image just to upload or save it.
An opensource example of clipboard manager is Ditto. It tracks changes in the clipboard and save a history of everything. In case if the PrtSc key overwritten the clipboard, most of the time you will be able to recover.

  • Does anyone know how to make an icon for a new keyboard layout?

I have added a couple of keyboard layouts to my input sources and would dearly provide them with distinctive icons, but all icon makers I find on the net seem to cater to PCs only.

Going to the App Store, there is a link for support.   That takes me to a facebook page:
    https://www.facebook.com/pages/Friendly-for-Netflix/
Which when I lookup the info, takes me to:
    http://www.oecoway.com/
Since there are no support links on the latter link, I would just message the owner of the Facebook page and tell them of your troubles.  If they are non-responsive, you may want to just as the App Store reverse the charge, with the feedback that the developer is non-responsive to user questions.  If it is functional for the $5 you paid, just keep it, and hope for an update you can use.

  • New keyboard layout appeared after update - how to remove it?

    Hello community,
I'm using two keyboard layouts RU and DE and switching them with Ctrl+Shift. After a recent update a third keyboard layout appeared - US. I checked /etc/X11/xorg.conf, /etc/hal/fdi/policy/10-keymap.fdi and /etc/rc.conf but in all of them there is no US layout. Setting everything there up for the DE and RU layout didn't help, still the US layout is in the layouts list in Gnome. If I remove it from that list, it appears after the next reboot. So how can I go rid of it?

  • New keyboard layout

    Hello everybody!
Does anyone know if there will be Bulgarian in the kb layout soon?
    Regards.
    Blackberry! Here, now, forever!

    I have tried this
    - deactivate the F8 SPACES shortcut.
    - create a new shortcut for App Itunes F8 "Play".
    also later added
    - create a new shortcut for App Itunes F8 "Pause".
No result, does not work except that Spaces is no longer activated with F8.
Did I miss something? Do I need to restart the computer?

  • How may I edit or create new keyboard shortcuts in iWork applications?

Dear Pages enthusiast, A daily user of iWork applications, I often perform repeated operations that don't correspond to a default keyboard shortcut. It would great if I could set up my own shortcuts as was possible in Word a few years back. Can you help me find out how this is possible in Pages, Numbers and Keynote?

    Wow!
Let me just step back to the opposite side of the room to read that!
You set up menu shortcuts, as you do for anything in OSX, in:
Menu > Apple > System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts
Just make sure you spell the menu option exactly, including Upper and lower case.

  • Custom Keyboard Layout

Tried to create a couple of custom keyboard commands via tools> custom keyboard layout. FCS2 seems to completely ignore the two changes that I made (I did unlock and lock during the process)

I think what you have to do is save your changes into a new keyboard layout - and do it before you close the layout window. Then load the layout and you should be good to go. I did a quick test and that seemed to be how it worked.
    Hope that helps.

  • Unwanted switch of keyboard layouts

I have created a new keyboard layout file for german Dvorak typing. The .keylayout file was placed in the keyboard layouts folder and after that I enabled the new layout within the system preferences.
So far everything works fine. In some applications my layout switches back to the last system keyboardlayout without any coment or warning. It happens also, when passwords are needed. In Ical I can edit an event completely in Dvorak until i hit the date an time fields. Then the layout switches to the last System Layout, that was selected before.
I tried to move the layout into the system keyboard layouts folder, but with no effect. The packages that come with OS X contain also a variety of different layouts (.keylayout files). When I try to use a "original" .keylayout file ( like US extended.keylayout) the effect persists. I have no idea how to resolve this problem, as the original apple files also fail to work properly.
I will try another user profile as a last test.
    Any Ideas?
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

If I select from the mathematic symbols, no
character will be typed by the keylayout generated by
    Ukelele.
That's because the mathematical symbols range cannot be handled in a Roman layout, only in a Unicode layout. In a Roman layout you must use the ascii versions. I would try using a Roman custom layout that you have not had to change via BBEdit and see if you have the same problem. Adding non-Roman characters to a layout which is supposed to be Roman could cause problems. Also make sure you give the layout a keyboard ID which is unlikely to be used by any other layout.
Is there some reason you cannot use the ascii ><? These are what are normally used rather than the special Unicode versions.
<div class="jive-quote">The characters generated are different from the ones created by the original German Layout.
Could you explain that in more detail?

  • Swiss keyboard-layout only french version! Need german version (ö,ä,ü)

    Hi folks,
I use a swiss keyboard on my Mac under Bootcamp. Problem, there are two different
layouts here in Switzerland for the same kayboard. One is in french, one is german.
Bootcamp seems to support both of them, but its not true. Both keyboard layouts
are similar. Either layout: "Deutsch > Schweiz (Apple)" or "Französich > Schweiz (Apple)
    in both layouts, the key é, è, à still are é, è and à instad of changing to ö, ü, ä.
This is really bad... the programmer should come visit switzerland, and see why this works like that!
    what can I do?
    kind regards.

    Hi Xenitra
I had the exact same problem when using Parallels Desktop. I resolved the problem by downloading and installing "Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator 1.4" as source I chose " existing keyboard -> Schweiz(Apple) and did the necessary modifications for ä.ö,ü resp. é,à,è and saved and verified the new keyboard layout.
Then I selected build which created the application to install the new keyboard layout in the system.
Finally I chose my new layout, et voilà ;-)  Should work also with bootcamp.

  • Advanced keyboard layouts

Hello, I want to create my own keyboard layout. I know how to do this with xmodmap and doing it through XKB doesn't seem hard either, but I'm looking for something a tad more advanced. I want to create extra modes (like caps-lock) and submaps, which work like modifiers, except you only need to press them once rather than holding down the button (like in window managers like Stumpwm). The idea is to use those modes and submaps to use the same buttons for different characters.
There are three ways of doing it:
    - Software that creates keyboard layouts with this functionality, in which case: what is the software called?
    - Creating multiple keyboard layouts and switching through them by other software. Unpreferred since it probably doesn't allow for submaps, but in this case also: what is the software called?
    - Creating the software. I kind of doubt that the software exists, since surely I'm the only one who'd even want something like this. Thing is, I have close to no experience with programming, so this seems like quite a big first programming project. The advantage is that it'd give me motivation. Is it a good idea to just try to write this and learn as I go, and if so, is anyone willing to help me with it?
    Thanks in advance.

    For #2:
You can do 'submaps' with xchainkeys:
    https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=40797
And you can call different xmodmap commands with for instance xbindkeys with a file in /tmp to keep track of which one you are using currently.
If you disable caps lock, you can get led control back with kbd's setleds. If setleds complains about not being able to reach the terminal or something, try it like this:
    setleds -L +caps < /dev/tty0

  • US Extended keyboard layout map and question

    Hi,
I am not on a Mac now, that's why I ask:
    1. I need a map of the Apple US Extended keyboard layout, esp. how it works with the special characters and dead keys; where do I get this?
    2. Which extended key combinations do you press simultaneously, and which do you press one after the other? So called dead keys.
I want to have this layout on a Windows computer. I know how to create any keyboard layout in Windows, perhaps there is a way to export the layout from OS X with a single click?

    traktor15 wrote:
I was able to replicate the special characters in gray
but not the special characters (the dead keys?) in orange.
Yes, an orange key is a "deadkey".  You type it and then you type the base letter to get the accented version.  For example, on US Extended, option/alt plus a, then o, will give you ō (o macron).
I don't know how one creates deadkeys with the MKLC.  They are found also in Windows layouts like US International, where ' is a deadkey for acute accent.
